In 1973, Osamu Dezaki took the zero-to-hero sports shojo written by Sumika Yamamoto about high school freshman Hiromi and made a 25-episode TV animation series. Six years later, the successful Nippon Television show was put on the big screen by the same director. Being one of the best-selling shojo manga of all time, the tennis drama is a groundbreaking story that puts a strong female character in the lead and can be seen, together with “Attack No.1” (1969), as a precursor of future anime.
“Aim for the Ace!” will screen at Japan Society
“Aim for the Ace!” tells the story of Hiromi Oka, a high school student, who joins the tennis club because of her admiration for senior student Ryuzaki. Ryuzaki, spoken by famous voice actress Masako Ikeda (“Galaxy Express 999” ), is the best player in the team and in the course of the film Oka gets the chance to play double with her.

It's been a little too sane around here lately, so it's time to spice things up a bit with a little Dead Sushi. Noboru Iguchi, the near legendry director of classic Japanese splatter-fests RoboGeisha, The Machine Girl and Mutant Girls Squad, went back behind the camera in 2012 to direct the deliriously deranged Dead Sushi, a bizarre new movie inspired by the likes of Piranha 3D and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Iguchi's last picture was the equally bizarre F is for Fart, a juvenile short film that brought light relief (and light release) to the hit and miss horror anthology, The ABCs of Death. You can check out the official website just here and the glorious trailer at the link below. Starring Rina Takeda( High-Kick Girl!), Shigeru Matsuzaki (Space Adventure Cobra) and Kentaro Shimazu (The Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police), Dead Sushi arrives on U.K. DVD September 23rd 2013. Now...

Back in August of last year, we brought you the news about director Alexandre Aja (Piranha 3D) and his plans to adapt the Japanese manga-turned animated series, Cobra: The Space Pirate into a tent pole-sized live action franchise for the big screen. Aja was granted the rights by creator, Buichi Terasawa (Goku Midnight Eye).
At the time, Aja said of the project:
“I grew up dreaming about Cobra: The Space Pirate. My day was, finish school, run home and switch on the TV and I was hardly the only one. Kids did it in France, Italy, Spain, all over Western Europe. For many people there is Star Wars and nothing else, but for me and my writing partner, there is Star Wars and Cobra. I am so surprised it never crossed the ocean and made the same impact in the U.S., because it is so big everywhere else. There are 60 books,...

As we reported back in July, High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha 3D director Alexandre Aja is heading back to France for his next effort, a big budget adaptation of Terasawa Buichi's late 70's / early 80's manga series and subsequent anime Cobra The Space Pirate (aka Space Adventure Cobra). The first promo art for the film has been released in France and there are a few details to be gleaned from it. For one, we now know that the film is being backed by France's Onyx - the producers of this year's animated Cannes selection The Prodigies, which we have covered heavily here on Twitch. For another, the main character looks pretty badass. For those unfamiliar with the character, here's how Wikipedia...

What's next for Piranha 3D director Alexandre Aja once he's done with his hungry, hungry fish? Quite possibly a feature film adaptation of cult manga / anime title Space Adventure Cobra. Though I've not been able to find this confirmed anywhere else, fan site Cobraworld is reporting that it is coming.
Originally a manga by Terasawa Buichi that ran from 1978 to 1984 before spawning an anime series and animated feature, this is pulpy stuff that still has a loyal following in parts of the world. Word is that Aja and Gregory Levasseur will co-direct the live action feature with Don Pennington providing the visual effects. For those unfamiliar, here's how Wikipedia describes the original manga:
