Two new biopics about 20th-century Black icons entered the home viewing charts this week: “Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount), the film about the legendary reggae artist nearing $100 million in theaters, and “Shirley” (Netflix), about the first Black Congresswoman and one-time presidential candidate, led newcomers in a week that mostly repeated top titles.
“One Love” is #1 at Fandango, which ranks by revenue. The VOD platform won’t be able to provide its whole top 10 until Monday, but the company confirms that placement. Somewhat surprisingly, “One Love” is #3 at iTunes, behind “Anyone but You” (Sony) and “The Beekeeper” (Lionsgate), now both at $5.99 to rent after earlier strong PVOD performances at $19.99.
Both Fandango and Google Play chart by transactions. But normally a film with the success in theaters that “Bob Marley” had would debut at #1. It’s unclear, with data beyond relative rankings absent, whether this might be just because the reduced price...

March has been going along well, but only one new wide release made much of a mark this weekend as “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” continued to reign over all, including an actual “king.” Read on for the weekend box office report.
After scoring one of the second-best openings of 2024, the animated “Kung Fu Panda 4” held onto first place for a second weekend in a row, winning Friday with $8.8 million and then repeating with an estimated $30 million for the weekend, down 48% from its opening weekend. It has grossed $107.7 million in its first 10 days in North America. It added another $39.6 million in 56 international territories for a global weekend of $69.6 million and a global total of $176.5 million.
Denis Villeneuve‘s sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two” crossed the $200 million mark domestically in its third weekend, making it the first movie to cross that milestone since “Wonka.” This weekend, it added another $29.1 million,...

Thanks to the combined heft of “Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) and “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), domestic box office improved over the same 2023 weekend for the first time. And it did so with two films grossing over $40 million, not seen since last July when “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” did so for their parallel first two weeks.
Not only did #1 “Panda” exceed expectations with $58.3 million, but the “Dune” sequel, with $46 million, dropped only 44 percent from its excellent debut. Notably, that was about the same decrease seen by “Oppenheimer” its second weekend after a nearly identical initial gross. Also significant is that sequels traditionally drop more in their second weeks than original titles.
Meantime, A24 had its second consecutive strong platform debut, with “Love Lies Bleeding” with Kristen Stewart grossing $167,000 in five New York/Los Angeles locations. That bests last week’s “Problemista.” The latter film expanded to 20 theaters this week, with...

Paramount Pictures' 2024 musical biopic, Bob Marley: One Love is not far from its online release date, leaving many to wonder when it will be available to stream.
Featuring Kingsley Ben-Adir as reggae music icon Bob Marley, the new film highlights his rise to fame in the 1970s and moves forward until his tragic passing in 1981 at only 36 years old.
More than doubling its production budget at the box office by grossing over $150 million worldwide (per Box Office Mojo), One Love arrived to mixed reviews from critics and fans after hitting theaters on February 14.

After being stuck with a day and date HBO Max release at the height of the pandemic, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is getting a conventional theatrical release. This means audiences will finally get to experience the epic Frank Herbert adaptation the way it was meant to be seen: on the big screen (and in IMAX). While the first movie only opened to a modest $41 million, we fully expect the sequel to make double that this weekend. The obvious reason, of course, is that the movie won’t be available on Max, but I also think word of mouth on this one will be stronger than it was for the first film. While Dune was great, it can’t be denied that there’s a massive quality jump in the sequel, with many saying it’s the Dark Knight compared to the first film’s Batman Begins and should...

Despite grossing less than half of what it did last weekend, Bob Marley: One Love managed to hold onto the top spot of the box-office weekend by $1.9 million.
In its second week of release, the Bob Marley biography has brought in a total of $71.2 million for Paramount Pictures. The $13.5 million it made this weekend was good enough to top the box-office top ten for a second consecutive week as the second-place film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashira Training debuted in second place where it brought in $11.6 million for Sony Pictures Releasing. Meanwhile, Ordinary Angels debuted in third place with $6.5 million, just edging out Madame Web at $6.0 million, which was forced to a fourth-place finish. The Columbia Pictures product now has a two-week total of $35.4 million. This shuffling pushed Universal Pictures’ Migration down a spot to fifth place where it brought in an additional $3.0 million for Universal Pictures,...

Paramount’s musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” ruled again over a barren box office landscape.
The film added $13.5 million from 3,925 North American theaters in its second weekend of release, a 53% decline from its debut. “One Love” has been a surprise box office success with $71.1 million domestically and $120 million globally. It cost $70 million, and the studio only gets to keep roughly half of ticket sales, so it’ll need to keep singing in theaters to justify its cost.
“Bob Marley” topped the charts for the second consecutive weekend despite three new releases. Sony and Crunchyroll’s anime sequel “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — To the Hashira Training” fared the best among newcomers with $11.5 million from 1,949 theaters — enough for the No. 2 spot.
Hilary Swank’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” opened in third place with an uninspired $6.2 million from 3,020 venues, while director Ethan Coen’s comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls” crash-landed in eighth...

It is the season of Box Office clashes y’all. Who would want to give up the chance to witness a clash between two movies? Even the critics can’t resist the prospect of a clash between two behemoths. And the turn of the year has brought another such mouth watering clash for the people to behold. This time, we have in the ring Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love and Sony’s Madame Web. And it seems like we have a very clear winner.

It’s the last full weekend of the shorter month of February, and it’s hard to think that anything will do well enough to have any sort of impact on a month that barely recovered from January with a better-than-expected Presidents Day weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
What we get this weekend as far as new wide releases is an anime project, a faith-based drama and a quirky indie of sorts from an Oscar-winning filmmaker, which should all enter the Top 10 interspersed with returning movies.
Crunchyroll is releasing “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” into 1,962 theaters. It’s a similar theatrical release as what’s been done with “The Chosen,” in that it’s actually made up of two episodes from the popular Crunchyroll anime series, the conclusion of the “Swordsmith Village Arc” and the first episode of the “Hashira Training Arc,...

Sony’s Madame Web has suffered a devastating blow following its release, facing both critical fallout and disappointing box office returns. Directed by S.J. Clarkson and starring Dakota Johnson in the lead role, the film has garnered $51 million worldwide, while also earning the distinction of achieving the lowest average Rotten Tomatoes score, 13%, among major superhero films in nearly a decade.

Adding to the unexpected turn of events is the revelation that the studio had purportedly been eyeing a franchise with the 34-year-old actress, a plan now seemingly derailed by the underwhelming performance of the superhero movie.

Monday Am: No surprise as Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love continues to overperform now at $52M over 6-days after a better than expected Sunday of $9.45M (to originally expected $8.55M).
Monday is looking to ring in $5.5M. Current 3-day is $28.6M, 4-day is $34.1M. Some falsely guessed that coming off a record Valentine’s Day of $14M that Bob Marley: One Love would be front-loaded, ala The Color Purple which posted $18.1M on its opening Christmas Day (granted that had previews rolled into it). However, Bob Marley has a bigger appeal than that feature take of the Broadway musical; for in six days, the reggae legend biopic has already made 86% of what Color Purple finaled at ($60.5M). Overall, a great start for what will be a piece of counterprogramming as we approach Dune: Part Two on March 1.

Not too long ago, it would have been considered a box office suicide mission to pit any new release against a superhero movie.
But this weekend’s showdown of Sony’s comic book adaptation “Madame Web” versus Paramount’s musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” demonstrates that’s no longer the case — superhero tentpoles no longer hold all the power.
“One Love,” a PG-13 drama that’s aimed at older female audiences, towered over the newest Marvel (adjacent) flick, earning $52 million over the extended holiday weekend. Suspense thriller “Madame Web,” a “Spider-Man” spin-off starring Dakota Johnson as a paramedic with psychic abilities, generated a paltry $26 million over the same six-day period. It cost $80 million, so it will have a tough time turning a profit in its theatrical run since theater owners get to keep roughly half of ticket sales. The Bob Marley biopic carries a $70 million price tag so it...

Four years of writing about domestic box office during “a challenging period” makes it tempting to go with the glass half-full view (and even more). This weekend, Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” provides the necessary evidence with an estimated $49 million gross by Monday, six days into its Valentine’s Day opening run. Its three-day total is about $27.7 million.
That’s a terrific performance against a $70 million production cost, and it’s an original biopic. Despite a depressed marketplace, there’s an audience for mainstream movies that can make a profit. “Bob Marley” showed a strong cross-demographic draw, female slightly ahead of male, among all ages and ethnic groups. Reviews were not good (43 Metacritic), but it has an A Cinemascore and two weeks with little competition. It could become the first domestic $100-million grossing film of 2024.
There’s also compelling evidence for a glass half empty (or worse). The estimate...

I was both excited and worried for Bob Marley: One Love, a biopic about one of the most emblematic figures in Jamaica’s history, who deeply impacted its cultural and political landscape by becoming a pioneer of the reggae music genre and, ultimately, a global icon. Reinaldo Marcus Green being announced as the director instantly caught my attention since, after all, he’s the filmmaker responsible for one of my favorite biopics of the century, King Richard. However, the involvement of multiple screenwriters – Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street), Frank E. Flowers (Shooting Stars), Zach Baylin (Gran Turismo), and Green himself – as well as Marley’s family production company, raised concerns about potential biases and a lack of critical depth.

Without Valentine’s Day date nights to bolster grosses, ticket sales for “Bob Marley: One Love” fell sharply on Thursday.
The drama about the reggae legend earned $3.8 million in its second day of release, a 73% drop from its debut that brings its stateside total to $17.9 million. The Paramount release is hoping to hit the right notes over Presidents Day. It is projected to earn $30 million to $35 million over the six-day holiday stretch.
Its main competition is from Sony’s “Madame Web,” which is the studio’s latest attempt to expand its Spider-verse of Peter Parker-adjacent heroes and villains. Sony has had a mixed track record, scoring with the likes of “Venom” while falling flat with “Morbius.” “Madame Web” grossed $2.2 million its second day of release, bringing its domestic total to $8.2 million. The film should earn $26.8 million over the extended holiday period. Sony will try again in August with “Kraven the Hunter,...

Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love easily maintained its lead over Sony’s troubled superhero pic Madame Web at the Thursday box office after opening the previous day at $14 million from 3,536 theaters, the top midweek opener ever for Valentine’s Day, the studio says. The honor previously belonged to 2012’s The Vow ($11.5 million). Better yet — and despite “meh” reviews — audiences seem to dig One Love and gave it an A CinemaScore.
The Bob Marley biopic earned another $3.9 million Thursday for a two-day domestic tally of $17.9 million. It is also a force overseas, including opening Wednesday to $2.3 million in the U.K., a record for a music biopic.
In North America, One Love is doing more than double the business of Madame Web, which grossed $6 million on Valentine’s Day after getting ravaged by critics and a C+ CinemaScore from audiences. It added $2.2 million Wednesday for a two-day total of $8.2 million.

The New Sherlock Holmes In Sherlock & Daughter Series (Picture Credit: Facebook)
Many people worldwide are waiting for an update on Sherlock Season 5. The British mystery crime series stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the lead roles. The last season was premiered in 2017. Many have come to acceptance that there won’t be a fifth season. Well, chances are that’s true. But The CW has announced a spin-off series titled Sherlock & Daughter, which might excite the fans of the fictional detective.
As reported by Deadline, the series will have Sherlock, a young girl named Amelia, as his daughter and even Moriarty. So it’s not going to be a melodramatic father-daughter series. The premise will be about a young American girl, Amelia, arriving in London after her mother’s murder. She learns that her father is a famous detective. While it was assumed that Madame Web was going to liven up the box office a bit this holiday weekend, given a lack of competition, poor word-of-mouth (including a deadly C+ CinemaScore) and dire reviews are dooming it to be one of the worst-performing superhero movies in recent memory. Indeed, it looks like Bob Marley: One Love is doing much better than expected, grossing a mighty $14 million at the Valentine’s Day box office compared to Madame Web’s $6 million. While box office forecasters warned that the Marley pic would be front-loaded, that may actually not be the case, with the film receiving top-notch word of mouth and a much-desired A CinemaScore rating. What that tells us is that audiences really love the movie, so business may, in fact, build over the long weekend.
As such, our box office predictions for this weekend peg Bob Marley: One Love as having an easy win,...

Thursday Update: Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love was bigger than projected yesterday earning $14M; the best Valentine’s Day mid-week take ever. Audiences loved it more than critics with an A CinemaScore and 5 stars on Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak and an 80% definite recommend. In addition, it has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 95%.
Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web did $6.05M at 4,013 theaters with a C+ CinemaScore. Oy. That’s lower than the B earned by Marvel Studio’s The Marvels, but it’s the same grade as Sony/Marvel’s Morbius.
Wednesday Update: Moviegoing is slowly getting back into fashion, with Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love biopic seeing an estimated $12 million on Wednesday. That’s a record for a movie playing on a midweek Valentine’s Day, besting the $11.6M made by the 2012 Channing Tatum-Rachel McAdams romance The Vow.

North American Box Office: Here’s Day Estimates Of Madame Web & Bob Marley: One Love(Photo Credit –YouTube/IMDb)
Yesterday, on Valentine’s Day, we saw two major releases locking horns with each other at the North American box office. Yes, we’re talking about Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web and Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Bob Marley: One Love. Considering the differences in genres, there’s no clash as such, but still, they will affect others’ businesses to an extent. Let’s see how much both films earned on their day 1!
This year, there haven’t been any tentpole releases so far, but still, things are fair enough. Films like The Beekeeper and Mean Girls raked in good numbers and turned out to be box office successes. Other than that, there are holdovers like Wonka running in theatres. Now, two new Hollywood releases have hit theatres, but none of them are looking to score big.

Directed by Karthik Gattamneni, Ravi Teja’s film Eagle started well. However, after seeing a dip in the weekend, it seems difficult for the film to sustain at the box office. Read on!
Eagle was released in theatres on February 9, 2021. Unfortunately, it has not been performing well at the box office. On its fifth day, Tuesday, it earned around 1.25 crore in India.
Although the film opened to a respectable 6.20 crore on the first Friday, it saw a significant dip in earnings on Day 2, with only 5 crore earned. Surprisingly, the movie did not pick up on Sunday either, collecting only 4.85 crore on its third day.

Roses are red, violets are blue, two new movies will open in theaters on Valentine’s Day, but neither are expected to break through.
Paramount’s musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” is projected to collect $30 million to $35 million between Wednesday and President’s Day on Monday. Those ticket sales should be enough to lead over Sony’s comic book adventure “Madame Web,” which looks to generate $22 million to $25 million during the same six-day period.
Given the budgets of each film — “Bob Marley” cost $70 million and “Madame Web” cost $80 million, not including marketing — those aren’t especially encouraging estimates. Even worse, those anemic figures span six days, not the traditional three-day weekend.
The presence of two new offerings will be a welcome boost for cinemas. But it won’t be enough to revive the domestic box office as it remains down 15% from 2023. Comparisons to last year will be tough because...

London-born actor Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as reggae superstar Bob Marley in this perfectly serviceable biopic from King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, and Zach Baylin and from a story by Winter and Flowers, Bob Marley: One Life charts the life of the Jamaican singer from his rise to fame to his untimely death at the age of 36.
Bob Marley: One Love portrays the tumultuous political and social landscape of Jamaica following its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. Amidst escalating tensions between rival gangs, Marley finds himself thrust into the midst of national turmoil. When he is approached to participate in a peace concert aimed at uniting the people, Marley realises that his involvement in politics could jeopardise not only his career but also his life.

Today, Feb. 6, 2013, would have been Bob Marley's 68th birthday.
The beloved Jamaican singer died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36, but his legacy lives on through his music. Marley is credited with helping spread both reggae sounds and the Rastafari movement to a worldwide audience throughout his 18 years in the business.
According to Urban Islandz, "Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers," which was released three years after his death, is reggae's biggest selling album to date, with more than 10 million copies sold in the United States and an estimated 25 million worldwide. And that's no surprise.
Despite his absence, Marley has continued to garner success, being honored with such awards as BBC’s song of the millenium for "One Love" and getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Also in 1999, Time Magazine named Bob Marley & The Wailers' "Exodus" as the greatest album of the 20th century.

★★★☆☆ More an exercise in reinforcing a legend rather than unearthing its roots, Kevin Macdonald's reggae documentary Marley (2012) is an interesting, yet ultimately shallow and linear sweep through the life and work of Robert Nesta Marley. Nobody, but especially anyone who has a vested interest in maintaining the legacy, wants to tarnish the reputation of an idol. Any attempts to expose the flaws and fallibility of a figure like Bob Marley are bound to be handled carefully.

Review by LondonFilmFan
2012 has already been a year full of excellent documentaries and one of its finest, Kevin Macdonald’s Marley, sees its home entertainment release (on Blu-ray and DVD) on Monday 20th August. The reggae and cultural icon gets the definitive treatment here, as nearly two and a half hours are dedicated to delving into his life and influence. Marley isn’t the first documentary to focus on the life and times of Robert Nesta Marley, but it should be the last, as it would be nigh on impossible to top Macdonald’s thorough coverage of the superstar.
As Marley covers Bob’s life and career, so too does it provide a lesson on the evolution of reggae, which Marley played a pivotal part in. His years with the Wailers are fully explored with the aid of valuable and rare input from the sole surviving member of the original trio,...

The herb induced gospel of reggae and Rastafarianism would never have become the international phenomenon it has if it wasn’t for the impassioned genius of Robert Nesta Marley, better known to the world as Bob. Under that dreaded mass that consumed his scrawny face, his mind worked overtime to, quite literally, bring peace and unity to the world, while his body decayed in shadow until it was too late to save. Director Kevin Macdonald has done an admirable job of piecing together Marley’s life with what little early material and incomprehensible interview footage he had to work with. Marley shows deep respect for the musician who gave a voice to the struggling nation of Jamaica while remaining surprisingly honest about his short comings as a father and husband.

If you're a Bob Marley fan -- or a music lover, or a pop culture junkie, or even if you just like hanging out with Mary Jane -- then you're in luck. "Marley," the new documentary about the man's life, music and legacy from Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald ("The Last King of Scotland"), is the definitive biopic of reggae's most transcendental and iconic figure to date.
Macdonald's film seamlessly compiles and edits public archival material of Marley & the Wailers live in concert, plus enhanced interviews with Marley himself. New interviews with the other side of his family -- the white Jamaican side -- add a heretofore untold dimension that helps clarify the path Marley's private life took, which ultimately affected his music.

It's been more than 30 years since the legendary Bob Marley's untimely death at 36. Now, the man, his music, and his journey from slums of Jamaica to the heights of international stardom are being vividly brought to life in the first-ever documentary sanctioned by his family. It opens April 20 in theaters and on VOD and features intimate interviews with family members and those who knew him best.
"Marley" includes rare footage of Bob Marley and the Wailers' thrilling live performances as they rose to worldwide acclaim in the early 1970s. But "Marley" encompasses much more than music. Directed by Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald ("The Last King of Scotland"), it's a revelatory examination of Marley's entire life, from the rejection he suffered for being mixed-race to the assassination attempt that injured him and his wife -- as well as the reasons he is still, decades after his death, idolized by people around the world.

Director Kevin Macdonald explains how he pieced together his new film about reggae legend Bob Marley, from troubled early years in Jamaica to worldwide adulation - even after death
In 2005, the director Kevin Macdonald was working in Uganda on his film The Last King of Scotland. In the slums of Kampala he was struck by a curious fact. There seemed to be images of Bob Marley and "Get up, stand up" slogans and dreadlocks wherever he went.
Marley had been on Macdonald's mind anyway: he had been asked by Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, if he would be interested in getting involved in a film project about the Jamaican musician's enduring legacy.
The original plan had been to follow a group of rastafarians on their journey from Kingston to their spiritual homeland of Ethiopia, to attend a celebration of the 60th anniversary of Marley's birth. As it worked out,...

Do you like reggae? Then you definitely like Bob Marley.
Robert Nesta Marley was a Jamaican singer-songwriter best known for being the rhythm guitarist, lead singer and charismatic frontman of Bob Marley & the Wailers, a band that played ska, rocksteady and reggae music from 1963 until Marley's death in 1981.
Kevin MacDonald's new documentary, "Marley," takes a candid look at the man and artist via interviews with the people who were closest to him. Fans (and maybe even fans-to-be!) will definitely be jammin' as they get a unique and in-depth portrait of musician, formed by the people who knew him best.
"Marley" also incorporates rare concert footage that will no doubt feature the Wailers performing some of their most popular hits, including "I Shot the Sheriff," "No Woman, No Cry" and, of course, "Jammin'."

Cricket. I must confess, until this week, I had more interest in the insect than the sport and, even then, I can’t remember the last time I thought fondly of a cricket… Jiminy Cricket of Walt Disney Pinocchio fame, maybe… So the prospect of sitting down to 83 minutes of men talking sport really wasn’t something I was looking forward to or expecting to enjoy, and I just couldn’t imagine a human interest angle that would stir me.
