This article contains spoilers for Fargo season 5 episode 4.
Something festive, something spooky, something downright oogie boogie has been lurking around Fargo season 5 since its very first scene.
Flash back, if you will, to the opening moments of episode 1 “The Tragedy of the Commons.” The viewer is immediately thrust into chaos. Punches are being thrown at a meeting of the Fall Festival Planning Committee in Scandia Middle School. Look past the melee of writhing white Midwesterners towards to stage and what do you see? That’s right: crude plywood renderings of the iconic landscapes from the 1993 animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas. Later on, as Dorothy Lyon (Juno Temple) is being escorted out of the school, we see two Nightmare Before Christmas posters, confirming it as Scandia Middle School’s fall show.
Now, at the beginning of episode 4 “Insolubilia,” Fargo season 5 kicks its Nightmare Before Christmas appreciation up a notch. Not...

Tim Burton loves to make things spooky and morbid, but his favorite holiday might well be Christmas. Look at how many of his films take place during the Yuletide season: "Batman Returns," "Edward Scissorhands," etc. He also conceived of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," which is all about Halloween Town's top ghoul, Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), getting Christmas fever. While Burton handed off directing duties of the stop-motion picture to Henry Selick, it's easy to see his fingerprints and why he would empathize with Jack.
David A. Bossert's "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Visual Companion" was released this year for the film's 30th anniversary. The book features interviews with the film's crew, from Selick to Art Director Kelly Asbury, where they describe forming the film's distinct visual style — since there were multiple holiday-themed dimensions, they couldn't stick to just one aesthetic.

Director Tim Burton has revealed that he has absolutely no plans for a sequel, prequel, or reboot of his classic 1993 film ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas’, debunking all rumours which say otherwise.
In a recent interview with ‘Empire’ Magazine, the ‘Batman’ director said that the stop-motion animated film is “very important” to him, which is why he wants to leave it alone, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.
“I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other things, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that s***, right? I don’t want that to happen to this,” Burton said. “It’s nice that people are maybe interested in another one, but I’m not. I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won’t sell to the big power-plant that wants to take my land.”
Speaking in a grumpy voice, he added: “Get off my property!

It’s almost unthinkable these days that :a[Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/nightmare-christmas-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} wasn’t a huge hit when it was first released. At the time of writing, it’s a total holiday staple, heavily merchandised, with songs that stand as household favourites. But back in the day, the film scared Disney, underperformed at the box office, and only went on to become a perennial favourite on home video. Thirty years later, its legacy stands as tall as its skeletal protagonist – and while that means fans often clamouring for another adventure with Jack Skellington and the denizens of Halloween Town, Burton is insistent on that not being the case.

If you were around when "The Nightmare Before Christmas" first opened in theaters, it might freak you out to learn that it's been 30 years since then. The film, adapted from a story by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick, tells the musical tale of Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, who is having an emotional crisis. He's looking for something different and new when he comes across doors for other holiday towns. When he visits Christmas Town, he thinks it will be much better than what he has. He returns to Halloween Town and tries to get the spooky residents to embrace Christmas, which they do, but in their own, unique and creepy way.
Elfman, who was the lead vocalist and played rhythm guitar for the band Oingo Boingo at the time, composed the music for the film in just around 30 days.

Whether you think "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie, it's a joy. The story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, is regular holiday viewing for fans, including myself, and the stop-motion animation is incredible. It gives it a creepier quality than regular animation would have. The lighting on the deep wells of Jack's eyes or the way it looks like you could actually wear the fancy dead rat hat yourself just makes you shudder in the best way. Look, I'm not saying this is a scary movie. It's just adorably disturbing as well as wildly entertaining.
Producer Tim Burton, who came up with the idea for "The Nightmare Before Christmas," almost had one of those adorably disturbing (and pretty gruesome) moments in the film as a cameo, though Selick didn't keep it in,...

Based on Tim Burton's 1982 gothic poem, "A Nightmare Before Christmas" has become a seasonal classic that's come close to eclipsing "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" as the quintessential holiday movie. Whether you and your family watch it over Halloween or Christmas (or both), the macabre musical is just as much of a staple during the Fall months as candy corn and eggnog.
Together, stop-motion master Henry Selick ("Coraline"), screenwriter Caroline Thompson ("Edward Scissorhands"), and composer Danny Elfman executed Burton's original vision perfectly, creating a world where each holiday exists within a magical realm unto itself where the inhabitants can celebrate all year round. Originally, Elfman was tasked with writing the songs and music, in addition to voicing lead character Jack Skellington, the so-called "Pumpkin King" of Halloween Town. As a result, Elfman became deeply attached to the part, making the decision to...

Jack Skellington famously sings “What’s this?” when first discovering snow in the seminal stop-motion animated feature The Nightmare Before Christmas, and it’s a question that audiences likely asked upon initial release in October 1993. The strange animated feature that embraces German Expressionism and macabre character designs feels atypical of family-friendly fare yet spends the bulk of its narrative exploring the Christmas holiday as an outsider. Disney understandably felt nervous about releasing the feature, one so removed from their usual output, but misfits everywhere ensured that The Nightmare Before Christmas would eventually become not only a widely embraced classic but one of the most marketable films ever for the brand. It also happened to be the masterful feature debut of filmmaker Henry Selick.

Let’s just be honest: being scared isn’t fun. At least, not for everyone. So entering Halloween — aka “spooky season” — can be pretty hard, especially when it comes to finding movies to watch. Well, it’s a good thing you’re here.
Because the thing is, Halloween movies are a core piece of celebrating the holiday. You get together with friends, you break into the candy early, turn off all the lights and get cozy for the night. But if you’re a big ol’ scaredy cat (like this writer is more than secure enough to admit she is), those nights are significantly harder.
So, we went ahead and rounded up 13 of the best Halloween movies that you’ll be guaranteed to still get a good, nightmare-free sleep after.

HeBGB TV was among my favorite films I saw at Salem Horror Fest earlier this year, so I’m delighted that the frenetic horror-comedy anthology has made its way to Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting’s streaming service Screambox in time for Halloween.
In my review, I called it “a high-camp blend of the wistful glow of Wnuf Halloween Special, the uninhibited hyperactivity of Rick and Morty‘s “Interdimensional Cable” episodes, and the absurd unpredictability of Adult Swim’s Too Many Cooks.”
What I didn’t mention was all nods to genre favorites peppered throughout the film.
Here are 17 horror references in HeBGB TV.
1. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
HeBGB TV’s opening credits are inspired by the Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers title sequence, which perfectly captures the autumnal atmosphere.
2. Creature from the Black Lagoon
The boy in the opening scene is playing with a Creature from the Black Lagoon figure.

This Is Halloween: The Gateway Horrors of ‘Cobweb’ and ‘The Curse of Bridge Hollow’ [Double Trouble]
I grew up on Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, and Goosebumps. These gateway horrors opened up a whole new world for me. The trembling fear I endured when Carly Beth slid on that terrifying green mask still lingers with me even now. And I’ll never forget the chills I felt running down my spine when Sarah launched into “Come Little Children” or the penetrating gaze of Kalabar that seemed to cut into my soul. These images provoked something in me, conspiring to lure me into horror – and I’ve never left. I might be 30-something now, but I can still enjoy nice little gateway horror movies, especially when they’re as compelling as the Halloween-set Cobweb and The Curse of Bridge Hollow.
In Cobweb, screenwriter Chris Thomas Devlin stages an epically creepy story about a young boy named Peter (Woody Norman), whose parents Carol (Lizzy Caplan) and Mark (Antony Starr) rule with a stringent hand.

The Nightmare Before Christmas fans shouldn’t be expecting a sequel… at all.
The fan-favorite stop-motion animated movie just turned 30 years old this past Friday the 13th, and is currently replaying in theaters!
In a recent interview, the director of the film, Henry Selick, spoke out about the possibilities of a sequel, and he shared an idea he has for a prequel.
Get the scoop inside…
The long process of creating the stop-motion animation wouldn’t deter Henry from making a sequel, but he thinks it is “a perfect movie [that] came out of the perfect time, only to grow into something far bigger over the years,” he tells People.
“I think Tim [Burton] in particular feels like, why mess with that?” Henry continues. “He certainly doesn’t need to make more money from a sequel. He has had so many other successes, and so far nobody’s come up with a great idea for a sequel.

If one takes a look at the classic Halloweentown franchise, one may notice an inconsistency in the fourth and final film in the franchise.
Return to Halloweentown saw a new actress, Sara Paxton, take over for Kimberly J. Brown in the lead role of Marnie Piper, a witch who served as the protagonist for all the franchise's movies.
Over the years since the 2006 installment, fans may have wondered why exactly such a significant role was suddenly recast right as the franchise neared its end.

Henry Selick may believe a “Nightmare Before Christmas” sequel isn’t necessary, but a prequel to the stop-motion animated classic could be worth pursuing.
In a recent interview with People magazine, director Selick shared his idea for a potential prequel as “The Nightmare Before Christmas” turns 30.
“There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloweentown,” he said.

“I think Tim [Burton] in particular feels like, why mess with that?” Selick added. “He certainly doesn’t need to make more money from a sequel. He has had so many other successes, and so far nobody...

It’s been 30 years since The Nightmare Before Christmas was released. While there are no firm plans, director Henry Selick has an idea for a potential prequel.
The 1993 stop-motion animated movie, from a story created by Tim Burton, follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, as he stumbles into Christmas Town. Intrigued, he tries to incorporate its themes into his town.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is currently streaming on Disney+.
In an interview with People magazine, Selick alternately drummed up support for and threw cold water on a concept for a prequel.
“I think Tim [Burton] in particular feels like, why mess with that? He certainly doesn’t need to make more money from a sequel. He has had so many other successes, and so far nobody’s come up with a great idea for a sequel. And I still think that Tim gets to decide. I don’t...

Subscribers to Charter Communications’ Spectrum cable service on Thursday night suddenly found themselves cut off from ESPN, FX, Disney Channel and other Disney-owned channels.
All told, 18 Disney-owned networks, plus local ABC stations in several major markets, factor into the carriage dispute between Charter and The Walt Disney Company, which promises to be a bellwether as the current TV economy faces an overdue reckoning. And all as much college football and U.S. Open coverage is due to unspool on ESPN.

Don’t believe anything you read. Hocus Pocus is a damn good movie. From its opening frame, the 1993 film contains all the magic and wonder you could want from a gateway horror movie – earning its place next to other ‘90s essentials like Halloweentown. It’s got a talking black cat, spooky spellcasting, a zombie, and three children-eating witches – oh my! Released in the height of summer (July 12), the Kenny Ortega-directed feature hasn’t lost its allure. In fact, its legacy is as strong as ever. It’s still an extraordinarily fun picture 30 years later.
Hocus Pocus endures because of nostalgia. In the era of TV reboots, remakes, and requels, millennials yearn for their childhood and a simpler time. There’s a reason we got a completely unnecessary sequel last fall. But more importantly, Hocus Pocus defines an entire generation of horror fans. For many, it was their very first spooky movie.

Forget about who’s on first: It’s all about which Maggie Moore is the real Maggie Moore.
Crime caper comedy “Maggie Moore(s)” stars Jon Hamm as a small-town police chief who investigates the back-to-back murders of two women, both named Maggie Moore. Per the official synopsis, things quickly ratchet up in the comedy film.
Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery produces and directs from a script by “Halloweentown” scribe Paul Bernbaum. Tina Fey, who previously starred alongside Hamm in “30 Rock” and will act alongside him for the upcoming “Mean Girls” movie musical, portrays one of Maggie’s next-door neighbors, who becomes key to the investigation.
Micah Stock, Nick Mohammed, Mary Holland, and Happy Anderson also star.
“Maggie Moore(s)” is confirmed to debut at the 2023 Tribeca Festival. Slattery recently collaborated with Hamm on whodunit “Confess, Fletch.” The experience led Slattery to reach out to Hamm once...

The Series: "The Owl House"
Where You Can Stream It: Disney+, DisneyNow, YouTube
The Pitch: Do you like "Halloween Town"? Of course you do, you're clearly a connoisseur of quality cinema. Now, imagine if "Halloween Town" was written by one of those fan-fiction authors who crams every crevice of their story with the kind of detail that would make even J. R. R. Tolkien drool. Now, stop imagining "Halloween Town" because, frankly, you've been holding onto that franchise for too long. It's time to let go. Instead, turn your mind to "The Owl House," an animated series created by Dana Terrace. The story follows Luz Noceda (Sarah Nichole-Robles) after she stumbles into the Demon Realm, a dimension apart from our...

The Movie: "The Nightmare Before Christmas"
Where You Can Stream It: Disney+
The Pitch: For decades, we have debated when it's okay to fill the store with Christmas decorations. Halloween lovers hate it when tinsel shows up in Target before the trick-or-treat candy is even gone from the shelves. Christmas elves would be happy to deck the halls as soon as sweater weather hits. In my head, I imagine a sentient pumpkin spice latte wrestling with a carton of eggnog.
As someone who has always been right in the middle, loving both holidays, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is a delight. The 1993 film was directed by Henry Selick, and if you've missed it all these years, it's time to remedy that. This...

Aside from its revered place as one of the most beloved holiday movies of all time, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" has a complicated legacy. Not due to problematic themes or scandalous allegations, but instead like Tobe Hooper's "Poltergeist", where the collaboration process between its premier storytellers has muddied over time. The 1993 macabre musical extravaganza is the collected innovation of "Wendell & Wild" director and stop-motion maestro Henry Selick, screenwriter Caroline Thompson ("Edward Scissorhands"), producer Tim Burton (who also authored the 1982 poem that inspired the movie), and composer/songwriter Danny Elfman, who developed the story and lyrics with Burton.
Together, they tell the story of "a place that perhaps you've seen in your dreams," a realm where each holiday has its own world. Jack Skellington reigns as "The Pumpkin King" of Halloween Town and its monstrous citizens — "There are few who'd deny, at what I do I am the best,...
