Pixar is reportedly developing a direct-to-video spin-off of Cars titled Planes, according to Movieline. Not much more is known at this time, but presumably it will be about airplanes that can talk, think, and emote.
The idea comes at a time when Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter, who once famously said Pixar is not in the business of making sequels, has just overseen the release of Toy Story 3 to $350+ million and the biggest movie in the studio’s 15-year history. Meanwhile, Cars 2 is next on deck and a Monsters, Inc. 2 is in the early stages. It seems Pixar is no longer as reluctant to capitalize on familiar characters and concepts as they once were.
