It's easy to get confused in the world of content, because today's platforms are teeming with different series about everything under the sun.
Here are five sci-fi series that a child will enjoy watching while also learning something new.
1. Star Trek: The Next Generation, 1987-1994
In 1987, a new series based on the Star Trek universe was launched. One hundred years after Kirk and Spock, Captain Picard, the navigator Crusher, the android Data and the Klingon Worf set out to explore space.
The Next Generation brought the ideas of the original to perfection and finally shaped the appearance of the universe, introducing much that Star Trek cannot be imagined without. It was the most popular project in the history of the franchise, and it was with The Next Generation that many fans were introduced to Star Trek.
2. Farscape, 1999-2003

A handsome American ends up stranded on an alien ship, manned by an unusual alien crew, where he falls in love with its resident warrior woman. It's not "Guardians of the Galaxy," it's "Farscape," the Australian-American sci-fi series! The series was created by Rockne S. O'Bannon and Brian Henson with alien designs courtesy of the Jim Henson Company, including several puppets that served as central characters. "Farscape" is funny, campy, and weird as hell, setting it apart from not only its television contemporaries but all other sci-fi shows. "Farscape" ran for four seasons from 1999-2003, and while it wasn't as popular as some of the other big sci-fi shows, it has a devoted cult following that really loves it.
In a retrospective for the show's 25th anniversary at IGN, Henson shared his inspiration for the show and what he and O'Bannon were trying to do with "Farscape." With its wacky...

The story of Beowulf and Grendel is one of the most famous stories in English literature. The epic Beowulf is one of the most important works of English literature in general and it has been an inspiration for many authors over the centuries. We have also had numerous adaptations of the work, including the animated film from 2007, but all of them focused on the heroic tale of Beowulf, the hero of the story. But, the story also has another important character – Grendel – the monster and Beowulf’s rival in the story.
Grendel is finally going to get the chance to tell you his side of the story, as the movie Grendel will be released soon, with Palisades Park Pictures is launching international sales ahead of Cannes.
But that is actually not the main piece of news we have for you today. Namely, the cast of the upcoming movie has been...

Tron: Ares may or may not feature an appearance by the series star, Jeff Bridges, but the actor will be starring in a new live-action adaption of the legendary monster at the heart of the poem of Beowulf. Deadline has revealed that Bridges will be the lead in Grendel for The Jim Henson Company. Studio Palisades Park Pictures will be launching its international sales of the monster film ahead of the sales event in Cannes.
Grendel will involve the monster of Beowulf telling his side of the story. This new interpretation will be helmed by Robert D. Krzykowski, known for The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot. Bridges will be joined by an impressive line-up of actors for an all-star cast, which will include Dave Bautista of Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune: Part Two as Beowulf, Bryan Cranston, who fans know from Breaking Bad, as King Hrothgar,...

The genre of science fiction is one of the most popular: it was back then and it is now. However it seems that there are only a few sci-fi shows that are getting enough praise nowadays, and the rest of the not less brilliant series are being sidelined.
One of such shows is definitely Farscape, created by Rockne S. O'Bannon. The series premiered in 1999 and ran up until it was canceled on its season 4 in 2003 because of being too expensive to produce.
Despite its 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Farscape remains a show that only true sci-fi fans know about. This exciting Australian-American show is about an astronaut named John Crichton. A specialist from Earth, he was thrown into a distant part of the universe and ended up as part of the crew of a fugitive alien spaceship.

25 years ago The Sci-Fi channel (SyFy these days) brought onto the airwaves a series unlike any ever seen before. Farscape took the idea of weird and ran with it in a universe filled with the bizarre, the beautiful, and both at the same time.
Created by Rockne S. O’Bannon, the man behind Alien Nation, Farscape introduced viewers to creatures and aliens of all different shapes and sizes. Some of them were people and others were beyond anything we could imagine. And we all saw it and experienced it alongside lost astronaut and scientist John Crichton, played by Ben Browder. Crichton was the only Actual human around and was the perfect stand in for the rest of us.

The name Henson is one that the world recognizes when it comes to creating magic. Brian Henson carries on what his father started by doing just that. Over the years, The Creature Shop (which we recently visited) has designed and brought to life some of the most beautiful and ingenious creations that audiences have ever seen.
Brian Henson grew up making worlds like those in Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and more, and he would be one of the keys in creating the boundary-breaking now iconic series Farscape 25 years ago. Since then, The Creature Shop has gone on to return to the world of The Dark Crystal with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, bringing to life a slightly more sinister batch of creatures with The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell and some Very sinister ones with Five Nights at Freddy’s.

As the calendar marks March 19th, 2024, we find ourselves celebrating a remarkable milestone in television history. It’s been 25 years since ‘Farscape’, the innovative science fiction series, burst onto our screens with its pilot episode. This show not only captivated audiences with its rich storytelling but also revolutionized the use of special effects and puppetry in science fiction. At its core, ‘Farscape’ is the tale of astronaut John Crichton, thrust into an unknown galaxy and forced to navigate a universe teeming with alien life and intergalactic conflict. The series distinguished itself from other space odysseys by delving into the

James McAvoy has been in the entertainment industry since he was a teenager. When he made his debut as an actor in The Near Room in 1995, he was not much interested in becoming an actor. However, that changed soon and he ended up going to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He graduated from the academy in 2000.

Since then, he has worked with numerous great directors such as Steven Spielberg and Matthew Vaughn. However, he refused to give any advice to Timothee Chalamet when his movie Dune was about to be released in 2021.

The 90s has a not-entirely unearned reputation as a bit of a dead zone for television sci-fi outside of the USA – especially in the UK. However, the truth is that the 90s was actually something of a golden age. It’s just that in Britain, this golden age happened exclusively between 3:25 pm, when everyone got off school, and 5:30 pm, when everyone watched Neighbours. These homegrown and Australian shows ran the entire gamut of what science fiction could do, from hilarity to terror.
The budgets were low, the special effects had a short shelf life and most of them are now almost impossible to find outside of the memories of some nostalgic Millennials, but they introduced an entire generation to the sci-fi genre, as well as to some banging theme tunes.

Ron Underwood's 1990 monster flick "Tremors" is one of the better horror films of its decade and kicked off a long-running entertainment franchise that includes seven films and a 2003 TV series. It also provided horror aficionados with one of the most indelible heroes the genre has ever seen in Burt Gummer (Michael Gross), a violent, gun-toting survivalist who somehow comes across as decent, caring, and lovable. Burt Gummer was only a supporting character in the first "Tremors," but became the series' central protagonist in "Tremors 3." Gross remained devoted to the series until its end in 2020.
The monsters in "Tremors" were novel and awesome. Nicknamed Graboids, the monsters were outsize, blind, subterranean worm creatures that could burrow at amazing speeds. They were each possessed of three snake-like tongues that could pop up from the ground and grab potential victims. They sensed their prey by listening to footsteps and vibrations, leading to...

Come, sit, and hear sad stories of what it was like to be a young British millennial nerd. The nineties were, in many ways, a dark age for British science fiction. Doctor Who was gone, apart from one Children in Need crossover with EastEnders – Dimensions in Time in 1993 – and an American co-produced movie simply called “Doctor Who” (which we would all pretend to hate while treasuring our VHS recording and commemorative Radio Times issue).
Over the pond, TV sci-fi was in the middle of a golden age, with three Star Trek series, Babylon 5, Farscape, The X-Files and Stargate Sg-1 only marking the tip of a science fictional iceberg. But British fans could only watch these episodes months or even years after the fact, particularly if they had only access to terrestrial television, and were forced to paw through magazines and websites for reviews and plot summaries to sate their hunger.

A history of the most underrated British science fiction of the 1970s is, largely, just a history of British science fiction of the 1970s. It gets a bad rap. Think “1970s British Sci-Fi” and your mind will be flooded with associations of dodgy special effects, less-than-perfect gender politics, and so much knitwear. That, and a certain time traveller with a predilection for scarves and jelly babies.
But the truth is the 70s was a golden age for British science fiction stories with ideas and ambition, completely unrestrained by any concept of production values. While even the most pedestrian attempt at modern science fiction telly feels it has to go toe to toe with the MCU’s latest CGI eyeball-blaster, a year after Star Wars was on our screens the Doctor was still routinely facing off against dressed like this, and it was better for it.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Ahsoka."
You just never know who's going to show up in a galaxy far, far away these days. Whether it's "Cousin" Richie from "The Bear" (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) popping in to assist Cassian Andor on the Aldhani heist on "Andor" or Dr. John "J.D." Dorian from "Scrubs" (Zach Braff) playing the "Star Wars" equivalent of a Maga supporter on "Obi-Wan Kenobi," the supporting cast of the "Star Wars" franchise is an eclectic collection of top-of-the-line character actors and fan-favorites. Sometimes, however, you might not even recognize them, as they're buried under layers of makeup or wearing a helmet the entire time. That was exactly the case on the latest episode of "Ahsoka."
Titled "Far, Far Away," the episode follows those aboard the Eye of Scion to Peridea, the extra-galactic homeworld of the Dathomiri and a planet so ancient it had fallen into myth.

Why are we fascinated by science fiction? Is it the opportunity to extrapolate technological and sociological trends beyond our current experience? Is it the way it helps us to appreciate our place in a vast and unknowable universe? Is it the way that it gives us a fresh perspective from which to examine the human condition?
No! It’s none of those things. It’s aliens. Aliens are the number one best thing about science fiction, which is why we can objectively and correctly rank large science fiction franchises according to which one has the best aliens.
And out of those franchises, the biggest ones with the most detailed alien cultures are Doctor Who and Star Trek.
To decide, again, objectively and correctly which aliens are better, we must look at a complex lattice of interrelated criteria, scientifically judging each one to objectively determine the best.

Farscape’s creators Rockne S. O’Bannon and Brian Henson gave a new interview as part of Shout! Factory’s Fandemonium Marathon, explaining the thought process behind the diminutive despot Dominar Rygel XVI (voiced by the late Jonathan Hardy).

“Rygel, that was as small as we could make him, basically, and be able to work him” explains Henson.
“I wanted Rygel to be 12-inches, because he’s a ruler,” continued O’Bannon. “Which is a joke that could never be said, but tickled me. But he wouldn’t be able to be articulated.

Regulars on the Farscape subreddit will already know that Owen Davies has completed his epic AI Remaster Project, releasing all 88 episodes – plus the two-part Peacekeeper Wars miniseries – to YouTube in 4K.
Upscaling the existing Farscape 15th Anniversary Blu-ray footage was undertaken using the commercially available Topaz Video AI software. However, Davies – who works as a Freelance digital designer/multimedia developer – balks at referring to it as a mere “upscale.” A lot of highly technical preparation is done on the Blu-ray footage, such as sharpening the image, correcting the contrast, and retouching the color grading to take it with a breath of a full remaster.
All in all, the process has taken him four to five hours per episode and I challenge you to find fault with the results in this side-by-side comparison video:

Farscape fans may be few, but they are proud and Peacock garnered some deserved plaudits late last year when all four seasons of the show, plus The Peacekeeper Wars miniseries, arrived on the streamer.
It’s just nice to be thought about, isn’t it? It’s a sign that someone somewhere in the industry still cares about this gleefully anarchic space opera of ours.
With that in mind, it seems like a pretty good time to list exactly where you can stream Farscape in the US and UK right now, including a fair few outlets where you can get it for free.
For convenience, we’d recommend Plex where you can stream Farscape on-demand for free in HD in both the US and the UK. For the fandom, we’d recommend streaming it live on Shout! Factory TV, which is also available in both territories. Shout! Factory is the...

This article is spoiler-free for The Ark premiere.
Around the dawn of the new millennium, TV shows primarily set aboard spaceships were abundant if not universally watched. The era produced classics like Battlestar Galactica and the Stargate franchise, but it also found niche audiences for shows like Farscape and Andromeda. Even the most low-budget efforts have only become more revered with time, and audiences remember them fondly.
Thankfully, The Ark evokes that same sense of adventure, only with more modern sensibilities and special effects. That shouldn’t be too surprising given that the showrunners of the Syfy series are Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the original Stargate movie, and Jonathan Glassner, who co-created Stargate Sg-1, the successful televised spinoff that itself spawned several other series.

For a good long while, it seemed that the parody had become the lowest possible form of comedy. With such abhorrent cinematic garbage piles like the works of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer dominating the form for nearly a decade, it felt like almost no one even knew how to make a decent parody anymore, let alone a good one.
Enter Dan Harmon. Thanks to his groundbreaking sitcom "Community" and its numerous episodes that parodied everything from specific classic movies to genres, he and his writers proved that parody could be more than just empty references and callbacks. Putting down-to-earth characters who go to a community college inside a pseudo-zombie apocalypse, as in one episode, is an extension of the way Edgar Wright made films first and parodies second in his early work like "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz."

In a report published Monday, the New York State Police confirmed that Mara was discovered in the St. Lawrence River in Cape Vincent around 8:10 p.m. on Sunday by various officers. According to a statement from a representative, Mara was staying at the summer home of her sister Martha. A preliminary investigation suggested Mara died by drowning while swimming. “Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met,” Dorfman wrote. “I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in ‘Mad Forest’ off Broadway.

Darkland Distribution, an imprint of U.K.’s Parkland, has picked up British sci-fi thriller “Deus.”
As well as acquiring the U.K. and North American distribution rights, Darkland will represent worldwide international sales rights to the film, described as a “provocative and thought-provoking” sci-fi thriller.
“Deus” is written and directed by British Independent Film Award winner Steve Stone, who also wrote the feature “Entity” starring Dervla Kirwan and Charlotte Riley.
“Deus” stars Claudia Black (“Farscape”) and David O’Hara (“Cowboys and Aliens”) as astronauts who are sent to investigate when a mysterious dark sphere is discovered orbiting Mars. Waking from an 8-month hibernation aboard their vessel, the Achilles, they discover the sphere is actually a blinding light from which one word is repeatedly transmitted in over four thousand languages: God.

When people think of “Dune” adaptations, three projects most likely come to mind: David Lynch’s maligned “Dune” from 1984, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s failed attempt in the 1970s (immortalized in the documentary “Jodorowsky’s Dune”), and Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming 2021 version. But there’s a fourth adaptation that often goes overlooked: John Harrison’s 2000 miniseries for Syfy (known then as Sci Fi Channel) titled “Frank Herbert’s Dune.” The series was a ratings bonanza for Syfy and won two Emmys, leading to the 2003 sequel miniseries titled “Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune.” That’s where James McAvoy enters the picture.
Long before “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “Atonement,” McAvoy was cast in a main role for “Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune” miniseries, which adapted the events of Herbert’s novels “Dune Messiah” and “Children of Dune.” McAvoy played Leto II Atreides, the son of original “Dune” hero Paul Atreides and Chani (played by Timothee...

If Farscape was to be brought back it might need to be updated a bit and it might need an entirely new cast unless those that were in the original show were willing to come back. That does sound like a possibility for some of them since there are a few actors out there that would love to back to the shows and movies they helped to make popular at one time. For a while, Farscape was one of the more appealing shows on the SyFy Channel, but after a while, as it happens with many shows, it was kind

A close-knit crew of wildly different people ride around on a spaceship having adventures. If you’re a sci-fi fan, there are very good odds that this synopsis describes one of your hooks into the genre. That crew might be a dysfunctional band of space criminals and revolutionaries, or a clean cut team of scientists, diplomats and soldiers serving a galactic Space Un, but there is a core appeal to this set up across the genre.
“Ensemble crews are one of the quickest and most powerful ways to forge a found family. A foundational example for me was Blake’s 7,” says Paul Cornell, who has written stories for the Star Trek: Year Five comic series among his many speculative fiction credits. “They haven’t been recruited, they have relative degrees of distance from the cause, they’ve been flung together. The most important thing is that they’re all very different people.

Yesterday brought the sad news that Mad Max: Fury Road star Hugh Keays-Byrne had passed away at the age of 73. The veteran actor hadn’t been particularly active over the last few years, but it seems fitting his final big screen role would be as Immortan Joe in George Miller’s incredible blockbuster given his long association with the filmmaker that dates back to an appearance in the 1979 original as Toecutter, while he was also set to play Martian Manhunter in Miller’s Justice League: Mortal, one of the most famous movies never made.
Keays-Byrne amassed a huge number of credits throughout his career, but despite being a Shakespearean actor by trade, his most recognizable roles came in genre fare. As well as Mad Max, there was also sci-fi disaster pic The Chain Reaction, dystopian thriller The Blood of Heroes, literary adaptations Moby Dick and Journey to the Center of the Earth,...

Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played two iconic villains in the “Mad Max” franchise, has died, his representative confirmed to Variety on Wednesday. He was 73.
Keays-Byrne played the antagonist Toecutter in the 1979 original “Mad Max” film by director George Miller, and he was brought back for the 2015 movie “Mad Max: Fury Road” to play the evil villain Immortan Joe.
Brian Trenchard-Smith, who directed Keays-Byrne in the 1975 film “The Man From Hong Kong,” shared on Facebook that he had died in a hospital on Tuesday.
“Hugh had a generous heart, offering a helping hand to people in need, or a place to stay to a homeless teenager. He cared about social justice and preserving the environment long before these issues became fashionable. His life was governed by his sense of the oneness of humanity. We will miss his example and his friendship,” Trenchard-Smith wrote.

Not only did he star as the main antagonist of Fury Road, but nearly 40 years prior, he appeared as the villain of the original Mad Max (1979), Toecutter. In between the two projects, Miller cast the actor as Martian Manhunter in his ultimately unmade Justice League Mortal movie and though we never got to see it, the lost DC film lives on in the memory of fans.

Star Wars or Star Trek. Babylon 5 or Deep Space Nine. Farscape or Lexx. Fans are constantly comparing and contrasting their favorites in genre shows and arguing over which is better. Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra is a slightly different case though, given that they’re from the same continuity, allowing for more direct comparison.
Of course, reasons to like either one over the other are perfectly valid, but pretty soon, fans will be able to rewatch both series as much as they want and relive all their favorite moments, as the latter will be joining the former on Netflix. That’s right, just a few months after bringing us Avatar: The Last Airbender, the streaming site has announced their plans to add The Legend of Korra.
