The game spoofs the classic 1973 science fiction thriller Soylent Green (1973). Abe discovers the "Rupture Farms" food products are made from his own people, The Mudokons.
This game Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is only on the North American Playstation Classic Mini Console bundled with 20 games.
The game's titular character Abe's name was almost changed before release. Word got around Oddworld Inhabitants office's that they were changing the name to "Monkfish". After a post it note guerilla campaign from several female office staffers, placing notes labelled "ABE" around the office, the developers kept the name.
The Mudokken characters were designed to all have four fingers. This included rendered FMV of the moon crater with four fingers for the character to compare his own to. However, the Japanese culture has strict rules regarding depictions of animation characters with four fingers. So the design was altered to 3 fingers. This concept was later changed for the sequal, where all mudokken characters have 4 fingers.
WWII veteran Alfred Gamble was depressed. He got over it when his daughter gave him a PlayStation and a copy of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee in 1997. He interacted regularly on the Oddworld website forums and a Mudokon from Abe's Exoddus was named after him.
