Film adaptation of an old Greek operetta
nick-the-pete28 August 2005
Interesting movie that includes a number of songs, such as the famous ode to retsina wine "retsina mou, retsina mou". The Athenian society of the 1930s is portrayed as a blend of different social classes and stereotypical characters. There is the taverna owner, the vagabonds who spend their day trying to find food, wine, and a place to sleep in the night, even the emigrant who made a fortune in America and comes back to Greece eager to impress every body with his dollars. Lambros Constadaras delivers an excellent "Prince Costas", it's interesting just to see him at such a young age (37 years old). The element of romance is not missing from the plot, with Prince Costas charming rich and poor ladies alike. Dinos Iliopoulos is his usual self, and so is Mimis Fotopoulos. Cameo appearance by Emilios Veakis one year before his death.
