Yoshiaki Kawajiri is well known for his ultra-violent and hyper-sexual anime like “Ninja Scroll” or “Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust” and his solo directorial debut, “Wicked City”, is the animator’s sleazy take on the well-worn humans versus demons subgenre, which offers more than enough problematic thrills to be entertaining, although its penchant for sexually degrading its female characters might prove too much for some.
After a period of fierce battles and conflict, humans and the demonic inhabitants of the so-called “Black World”, managed to reach a peace agreement which has brought centuries-long stability to the two worlds. This peace is protected by the Black Guard, an organization of secret agents recruited from both dimensions. Renzaburo Taki (Yusaku Yara) is an elite human member of the Black Guard, working as a salaryman by day. When the hard-won harmony between humans and demons is threatened by...

“We’re turtles! Fighting turtles! Not normal slow-poke turtles!” The above quote is not, unfortunately, the refrain of a song in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The newest film in the franchise, demolished by critics, may not actually be much fun at all. Fortunately that doesn’t really matter for us, just as it didn’t matter for Hercules or Planes: Fire and Rescue or Maleficent earlier this year. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a great excuse to talk about cartoons, the bonkers relatives of this floppy blockbuster that share its reptilian heroes if not its sense of style. The (likely badly translated) quote above is from the theme of Mutant Turtles: Superman Legend. To call it a television “series” would be accurate but also something of a fib, given that this obscure entry in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles canon ended after just two episodes. It was produced in 1996 by the Japanese animation studio Ashi Productions, otherwise...

Japanese animation has been pushing the boundaries of the field for decades, and Hollywood is only now catching up to the trends that anime films have already set.
In honor of Disney's American release of "The Secret World of Arrietty," which has already grossed $125 million outside the U.S., we're listing the most important masterpieces of the anime genre ... at least the ones that don't feature pervy monsters and Japanese schoolgirls.
'Akira' (1988)
It goes without saying that Katsuhiro Otomo's glimpse at the futuristic dystopia of Neo-Tokyo is a landmark of both animation and science fiction in general. Biker gang leader Kaneda is forced to do battle with lifelong best friend Tetsuo when the latter's latent psychic powers begin manifesting in horrifying ways. It's a subversive cyberpunk fable which functions as both cautionary tale of military run amok and full-throttle action movie. Though an Americanized live-action remake is in limbo, the...

The name Yoshiaki Kawajiri carries some serious weight among anime fans and aficionados. The franchise “Highlander” carries the same weight amongst it’s legions of loyal, sword wielding fans. In 2007 the two came together in a symphony swordplay and beauty. “Highlander: The Search for Vengeance” was a joint effort between Imagi Studios (“Tmnt”) and anime powerhouse Madhouse Studios (“Ninja Scroll,” “X,” “Trigun”) and was one of the recent efforts at a East-Meets-West collaboration on anime with others including Kawajiri’s own “Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust” and “Afro Samurai.” This was the first time a Western franchise or concept was adapted to anime, but was followed closely by the “Witchblade” anime. Okay now deep breath. You still with me? Good, because “The Search For Vengeance” is an amazing anime and the best and most interesting thing to happen to the franchise since the TV series. See Sam and Dean like you’ve never seen them before. Well, actually exactly like you’ve seen them in their hunting adventures, but this time it’s animated! This project is expected to yield twenty-two episodes for Warner Bros Home Video and will ship on DVD and Blu-Ray in Japan on January 12, 2011. Richelle Mead's supernatural romance series "Vampire Academy" got the green light from Preger Entertainment today, getting the rights to make the novels into several films. Yeah, because no production company or studio is trying to get their own version of "Twilight" success, that would be crazy. The tale does not have a human girl as the main character, not this time. Instead it's a dhampir, which is a half-human and half-vampire, like the character D in "Vampire Hunter D" for those of you familiar with Anime. She's training to become a body guard to her friend the princess Vasilia Dragomir and begins to have a love affair with her mentor Dimitri Belikov. The production currently is in search for someone to write the adaptation to the first novel of the series. There's six books in total, which means if the first one takes off like they want it to we'll...

For some reason, the future always seems to be a few decades away. 1984 was published in 1949. Terminator, which appropriately enough was released in 1984, set 1997 as the date for the apocalyptic “Judgement Day.” It seems strange now, after the turn of the Millennium (which happened rather uneventfully, with little more than an endless repeat of an old Prince song to mark its passing) to look back on things like Mad Max, Y2K, or the still older imaginings of such retro science fiction classics as Fahrenheit 451 or Soylent Green, but for decades, sci-fi imagineers alternated between the chills of gloom and doom and utopian fever.

Supernatural is going Anime. According to the animeanime.jp website, MadHouse (the production company behind Death Note, Paprika, Vampire Hunter D, Summer Wars) is producing a Supernatural Anime project for Warner Bros. The Anime series won't necessarily be "new." It's expected to cover the first two seasons of the live-action Supernatural series. However, we'll see some "original" content in the way of origin stories of the Winchester brothers' childhood. The series is slated for 22 episodes, with the first volume shipping on January 12 containing episodes 1 and 2. The second volume (Box 1), scheduled for February 2, will be contain episodes 3-12. Episodes 13-22 will ship in volume 3, or Box 2 on April 6. The Anime News Network reports that the "original" episodes will feature "prologues of the Winchester brothers' childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version." Tite Kubo's "Bleach" is reportedly being picked up by Warner Brothers for a live-action adaptation.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Get Smart" director Peter Segal and his Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing are in talks to produce "Bleach" in conjunction with Viz Media.
While the report notes that Segal is attempting to broaden his portfolio of films by "taking on darker, more action-oriented material", it also specifically states that Segal will not direct the film.
Originally released in Japan back in 2001, "Bleach" follows a fifteen year old boy named Ichigo Kurosaki who accidentally drains the powers of a female Soul Reaper — a Japanese personification of death similar to the Grim Reaper — named Rukia Kuchiki, leaving Rukia stuck in the human world and Ichigo as a guardian against evil spirits on Earth.
"Bleach" has previously been adapted into a long running anime series that is currently in its 14th season.

According to the latest issue of Rue Morgue, Vampire Hunter D creator Hideyuki Kikuchi plans to resurrect the popular story as both an anime series and a live-action feature. Kikuchi began the story in 1983, and to date 21 novels have been published.
The story itself follows D, a knight-errant of sorts who traverses the post-apocalyptic Earth, warding off vampires and his own possessed hand with the help of a sword and a faithful horse.
The series has previously been adapted into an anime movie released in 1985, and a second anime motion picture in 2000. The rights for a live-action movie were at one point optioned by Spawn producer Mark Dippe, but the film itself was never produced.

The latest issue of Rue Morgue brings the potentially intriguing news that Vampire Hunter D creator Hideyuki Kikuchi is planning to bring back the post-nuclear earth horseback-riding, sword-swinging, vampire-hunting dhampir in the form of both a new anime series and a live-action motion picture. In regards to the live-action feature, Kikuchi is working on it with the producer of the Biohazard video game, what gaijins like you and I call Resident Evil.
Vampire Hunter D began life as a manga series in 1983, became an anime movie released in 1985, and returned in a new anime motion picture in 2000. The rights for a live-action movie had previously been optioned by Spawn producer Mark Dippe. Presumably they have reverted back. One must assume this live-action movie in the works would be a Japanese production.

Earlier this month, we received updates on the status of two classic Japanese manga series — "Akira" and "Ghost In The Shell" — being adapted into live-action films. And now it appears that Hideyuki Kikuchi's "Vampire Hunter D" may be the next Japanese property to invade the silver screen.
According to a report in the Japanese horror magazine Rue Morgue (by way of Anime Vice), Kikuchi is working on a live action "Vampire Hunter D" film in addition to a new anime feature.
The story also states that a producer from the "Biohazard" (aka "Resident Evil") video game series — whom Anime Vice speculates is Hideyuki Kikuchi — is involved with the live-action film.

Why should American comics get all the fun of film adaptations? That’s not likely to be the case much longer, as several series based on manga — Japanese graphic literature — are getting in on the act, too.
On the heels of recent reports that the manga series "Akira", "Ghost in the Shell", and "Paprika" are being adapted into live-action films, comes news of another property getting the same treatment: Hideyuki Kikuchi’s "Vampire Hunter D". According to Anime Vice, which based its revelation on the Japanese horror mag Rue Morgue, Kikuchi is developing a live-action Vampire Hunter D as well as a new feature-length anime. The story also mentions a producer of the "Resident Evil" video game series (rumored to be Hiroyuki Kobayashi) will be involved in the live-action movie.

With the vampire craze getting a little low on blood fuel, just like the zombie phase well past its expiration date, an idea of immortals clashing just to feel an ounce of pain seems pretty damn refreshing these days. Incarnate has revealed its true purpose, discarding its vampire cover and adding some new blood to the action horror world: A bloody battle between gods and demons. And something tells me that when vampires, zombies, and werewolves are done, this will be the new fad in the comic book world.
Issue three of three didn’t trick anyone already reading this book into thinking this would be the end of it all. Hell no. I’m sure...

Solomon Kane (Dark Horse Books, tpb, $15.95)
For those who didn’t get the memo (or read Jeff Renaud’s chronicle of the fantasy hero in Starlog #370), Solomon Kane is the Second greatest character devised by Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard. A dour Puritan adventurer, Kane wanders Europe, Africa and elsewhere battling eerie menaces, grimly slaying any kind of evil, both monster and men. It’s not just his job; it’s his mission in life.
If Kane seems a little familiar, it’s because two later heroes Xeroxed his look (perhaps inadvertently or independently). Both Vampire Hunter D (the anime monster killer) and Van Helsing (the 2004 movie hero played by Hugh Jackman) must have used the same tailor. Of course, since Kane’s exploits were published in Weird Tales from 1928 and into the 1930s, he’s the original, not one of the clones.

The website of the Locarno International Film Festival has been updated with a new clip from the crazy racing anime Redline from Studio Madhouse director Takeshi Koike (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Animatrix).
[See post to watch Flash video] There’s a German review available over at Outnow.ch that criticizes the lack of character development and story depth (as expected) but praises the incredible power and weirdness of the racing scenes, so I’m still excited to see Redline on home video soon.

Pain. It’s overrated. Some wince at the very thought of being hurt. They flinch. They hide. They run. Pain not only gives intense feeling in a body; it sometimes stays there too. Sometimes...forever. It’s not surprising if you meet someone whose fantasy is to have the ability to live a life without pain. But even more surprising than that... is meeting someone who can. Let me introduce you to Mot. He’s a punk kid. Has a bad attitude, and can’t be killed. Such is life, hey?
Incarnate – Issue #1
Radical Publishing | Written and Drawn by Nick Simmons
From the mind of Nick Simmons, son of legendary Kiss rocker Gene Simmons, comes Incarnate. A story about a monster named Mot that looks like a 12 year old kid brother. We’re not sure at this point if he’s a vampire, a demon, or the devil himself, but...

Marvel has partnered with Japanese animation studio Madhouse and multiple-Eagle Award winner Warren Ellis to create four all new anime versions of classic Marvel Super Heroes. We at The Flickcast have gotten a great look at the first two shows, Iron Macn and Wolverine!
These two look like an awesome blend of the iconic stories and characters we know and love from Marvel and the quality animation we’ve come to expect from Madhouse, who have brought us shows like Vampire Hunter D, Death Note, and Trigun as well the 2006 film Pprita?
The series, which will include two other anime in adition to Iron Man and Wolverine, is expected to begin appearing on the Animax channel in Japan in spring of 2010.

Ok, I know you vampire fans can be a fanatic lot, so this list is sure to upset some of you, but this is My list. I can’t be wrong – you know why? Because it’s my list! Seriously, please comment and debate, and maybe we’ll all end up seeing some movies we haven’t seen before.
Wyatt Weed’s Top Ten Vampire Films 1. Interview with the Vampire (1994)
In my opinion the most well produced, adapted, and directed of all vampire films. Great source material, serious treatment of the subject, fine direction and acting. And it didn’t cost $100 million to make.
2. Blade (1998)
If “Interview” is the yin, “Blade” is the yang – action packed, stylish, great characters, and a believable, emotional new take on the old vampire clichés.
3. Dracula [aka: 'Horror of Dracula'] (1958)
This is the first and still one of the best of legendary Hammer Studios’ vampire films of the 50’s and 60’s.

Based on the story by Hiroyuki Kitakubo
Featuring Gianna, Allison Miller, Liam Cunningham, Jj Field, Yasuaki Kurata, and Koyuki
Something based on an anime movie about a female vampire hunter dressed up in a sailor girl’s suit just has to be awesome, doesn’t it? The answer is a very adamant, and disappointed, “no”. The live action version of the animated short, Blood: The Last Vampire (which I am sure sounds very poetic and makes sense in the Japanese language, just not in English) is a disjointed and weird movie about Saya (Gianna) and her weird adventures in 1970 Tokyo hunting the demoness Onegin (Koyuki)... Along for the ride is an annoying white chick (Allison Miller) who reminds me way too much of my college roommate Jennifer, and some awful CIA and army white-dude stereotypes that remind me that all Japanese people think Caucasians all look the same.

Studio Madhouse’s Racing Anime Redline has been around the net with several clips and trailers for some years now and also the following clip, the nice guys from Catsuka have found at youTube has been uploaded in January 2009, but that doesn’t make it any less amazing to watch.
Director Takeshi Koike (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Animatrix) shows us some really freaky stuff and amazing animations that kinda make Redline look like the bastard offspring of Yogi’s Space Race, Speed Racer and Basquash! that has been begetted during a wild drug night! Can’t wait to see the full 90 minutes of this!
The script was written by Yoji Enokido (Flfc, RahXephon, Nge), Yoshiki Sakurai (GitS:sac, Moribito) and Katsuhito Ishii (The Taste of Tea, Funky Forest).
[See post to watch Flash video] According to Ann, Redline will be shown on the French Annecy Animation Festival in June, until more screenings will be announced we’ll...

To handle international properties for worldwide distribution, Sony has created the Intl. Product Expansion Group according to Variety.
Tony Ishizuka will serve as Vice President of the unit. T. Paul Miller, senior VP of international for home entertainment said the “goal is to recoup its investment in each project in the country in which it was produced or acquired. The unit will then assess each title's prospects for distribution on home entertainment in other markets.”
A deal has already been signed with Japan’s Madhouse which will involve the previously announced deal to produce Easternized versions of Marvel’s heroes. The shows will be broadcast in Japan on the Animax TV network and then be handled worldwide by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Originally designed as animated fare, the long-range plans call for the Marvel Japanese Universe to be found on mobile devices and comic books.

The freaks come out at night
We could have put any number of mainstream vampire movies up here - The Lost Boys, Interview with the Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Blade, etc. - but really, these are better movies. Plus, they're creepier, and since we're not talking about the Top Five Movies About Florists, I think creepy is a good component.
That's not to say the Blade movies or Underworld or the Frank Langella Dracula aren't worthwhile. A lot of them are. But I think I've got valid reasons for all of these. Before we get to the list, other top nominees included Shadow of the Vampire, From Dusk Till Dawn, Vampire Hunter D, The Hunger, Fearless Vampire Killers, Fright Night, Lifeforce, and the truly bad Bordello of Blood. Oh, and the just as bad Van Helsing got one vote.
