It's all Greek to me

Warning: Spoilers
ELECTRA LOVE 2000 seems in intention to be a modern updating of the old Greek mythological story of ELECTRA. However, any interest inherent in that premise is immediately dissolved by this film's amateurish production values and extremely wooden style of acting, which makes it look like nothing more than somebody's high school film project.

No surprise that Troma were the only ones willing to put their names to this nonsense. ELECTRA LOVE 2000 runs the gamut of bad scripting, irrelevant padding in the story, and one or two scenes of random nudity so that the producers can sell this as a skin flick (it isn't). It's stilted and a chore to sit through, and the kind of film to make you wonder just what on Earth they were thinking by making it.

Low budget, rough acting (to be kind), but wonderful content

Warning: Spoilers
First, on Amazon Prime this is titled "Electra Love 2000". I didn't expect much, but got both more and less than expected. The movie follows the classic story line relatively well (okay, not closely but still within reasonable bounds) and is set in modern times but with lots of anachronistic references. It starts with two children chasing one another and then goes to the murder of their father later that day. Cut to 12 years later.

Electra is now a junkie whore and her brother, whom she has not seen in a decade, is a wandering vagabond with his adopted brother. They meet and Electra demands he murder the man who killed their father as he promised when they were children. Her whore friends try to separate them and get him to leave, as does his adopted brother. There are flashbacks of the father's murder and the mother's subsequent marriage to the killer. As her brother prepares to leave, Electra seduces the other brother and entices her friends to persuade her brother to revenge. Here's where it gets good. The friends and the brother are successful in changing her brother's mind and the writer of this film shows that he has some philosophical and historical chops during the sequence. I kept wondering whether the actors understood the content, but seeing how I could only find two of them in IMDb I figure they actually had real lives apart from this movie and may be very bright despite the very stilted readings. And 'stilted' is a kind way to put some of it. All in all, I think the writer had a lot of fun with this and I'd like to congratulate him for the excellent content and the enjoyment I got out of a film that was made on a shoestring. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it.

And now for the spoiler: Electra gets the murder of her stepfather and then demands the murder of her mother. The discussion between the mother and Electra is wonderful as each justifies herself to the other. Electra gets her revenge too; but the result is madness.
