- In the Japanese version of the game, Yoshi can eat the Dolphins. International versions of the game removed this ability in order to avoid confusion for the players.
- In the Japanese version, castles and fortresses upon being beaten cannot be revisited at any time. In international versions, it is possible, but requires the players to press the L and R buttons simultaneously in order to do so instead of pressing A, B, X, or Y that they normally press when entering any level.
- On Special World's eighth and last level called "Funky" in that world, a row of coins near the end of that level in the Japanese version spell it out at "YOU ARE SUPER PLAYER!!", but in international versions added a set of coins representing "A" to fill in the void between "ARE" and "SUPER". On the same level, the first six Green Berries in international versions replaced Red Berries in the Japanese version.
- The game's logo on the title screen of the Japanese version has the letters hovering above the shadows and with the letter "O" in "World" smaller than the rest of the letters. In international versions, the logo is re-drawn with the letters and their shadows underneath being consistent with each other, and the letter "O" in "World" being the same size as the rest of the letters.
