[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Star Trek: Discovery’s” fall finale, “Into the Forest I Go.”]
In its first nine episodes, “Star Trek: Discovery” has taken its crew on quite the adventure, finally landing them in an unidentified mystery location thanks to Stamets (Anthony Rapp) making one spore drive jump too many. But the audience has also gone on an emotional journey with the series’ characters, ranging from Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) despondency after an unsuccessful mutiny to the loony side-effects Stamets is experiencing from the tardigrade DNA. But it’s the journey by Discovery’s newest crew member, Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif), that’s been the most erratic and confusing.
The Pow from the Battle of the Binary Stars landed in a Klingon prison cell for seven months, during which he was able to survive because his Klingon jailor L’Rell (Mary Chief) took a personal liking to him. Upon his escape, Tyler seemed strangely well-adjusted despite his ordeal, but upon seeing L’Rell again on the Sarcophagus ship,...

“Horror gives us the permission to explore our most primal fears and deepest anxieties in a safe and hopefully, cathartic way,” said Vera Miao, creator of “Two Sentence Horror Stories,” a new short form anthology series based on the Reddit thread of the same name. The ambitious series uses genre to shed light on social issues such as racism, homophobia, cyber-bullying, and the pursuit of beauty. “Horror has such a strong track record in exploring social issues,” said Miao. “In this upside down political and social moment we’re in, no one can argue that monsters aren’t real.”
Miao initially got the idea for “Two Sentence Horror Stories” from a Reddit thread, which featured horror stories told in two sentences, many of which went viral. “They had a classic, campfire spooky story feel made possible by this new, digital space. They’re so evocative, my imagination would just go off,...

It's one thing to play a member of the Dar, but to realize you could actually Be a member of the Dar?
Surely that means the role was meant to be.
Just ahead of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life's premiere, we talked with Carolyn Hennesy about her role as Toni, the head of the local chapter of the Dar, who helps Emily confront what it is that she really wants out of life.
Hennesy is no stranger to playing wealthy women with questionable intentions, and with experience from Revenge, True Blood, General Hospital, and Once Upon a Time, sipping tea with Emily Gilmore came quite naturally to her.
TV Fanatic: What can you tell us about your role in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life?
Carolyn Hennesy: Well, my character's name is Toni, and I'm just head of the local chapter of the Dar, the Daughters of the American Revolution.

After all these years, American Idol is still pretty much my favorite thing on television, and yet I nevertheless spent the last seven days filled with unspeakable dread about this week’s performance show.

It goes without saying that in 2014 if you consider yourself anything close to a rock fan you’ve at least heard of one Myles Richard Kennedy, the man who effortlessly traverses every known high and low on the vocal spectrum.
With one of the greatest voices in all of rock n’ roll, be it past or present (or most likely the future too), he’s done everything from starring in the brilliantly funny Rock Star film to auditioning for Led Zeppelin and going on tour with Slash. And that’s without mentioning how in between all this he’s also fronted his own band Alter Bridge across stadiums worldwide.
Although whenever any adoration goes his way he’s more than humble, every Alter Bridge fan will scream from the rafters about just how indescribably amazing Mr. Kennedy’s exquisite set of pipes really are. There are some of us...

Shuffle and Stories is an attempt to get a more personal look on why we feel the way we do about music. Music is like art, subjective, and that means that everyone has a different way at looking at one album or band. Every week I’ll pick from one of ten songs when my library is on shuffle and talk about the music but also talk about why I personally like it or tell any personal stories regarding the music.

A recent study by the New York-based Institute for Special Populations Research conducted through self-reporting among 3380 participants found that in around 5% of those interviewed, the respondents reported "moderate to extreme problem game playing." Keep in mind, this represents 1/20th of the population, and the results are again, based on self-reported results which could skew in either direction, but it's more ammunition for the argument that there is a persistent problem with gaming addiction.
Luther Elliott, Andrew Golub, Eloise Dunlap, and Geoffrey Ream led the study participants aged 18 and up who played games at least one hour in the week before the interview was conducted. The team grouped the types of games that the participants were playing into 15 distinct genres, finding that the incident of Fps, action-adventure, MMOs, online gambling and role-playing games had the highest incidents of behaviors associated with addictive/problem behavior.

With David Fincher making what is essentially a bio-pic on Facebook, and Michael Haneke apparently lining up a world hopping project 'about the internet.' It seems that at least two prestige filmmakers seem to want to tell stories about the other screens that many folks stare at for goodly portions of their day. There have been dozens of documentaries that have cropped up over the past decade on various aspects of the internet: Social - We Live In Public, Business - Startup.com, Gaming culture - Second Skin. Yet fiction and drama have either been extrapolated out to extremes (eXistenZ, The Matrix) or been bombastic exercises in luddite-ism (The Net, The Lawnmower Man, Untraceable, Die Hard 4). There are a couple good movies to a greater or lesser degree 'about the internet' out there, Olivier Assayas' Demonlover, Kyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse, and Jason Reitman's Up In The Air come...

Understanding the intricacies of video game addiction is quickly becoming a cottage industry, and there are plenty of opportunistic individuals who’d love for you to thoroughly investigate their two-cent theories. Juan Carlos Pineiro Escoriaza’s 2008 documentary “Second Skin” takes an in-depth look at MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) and their overall effect on the human condition, with a specific slant towards the insanely popular computer game “World of Warcraft.” The trailer was more than enough to hook my attention, and as soon as the funds are in their proper place, the DVD will be on its way to my hungry snail mail box. As a former “Ultima Online” addict, this should be an enlightening piece of work, although I’m sure it will sting a little. Here’s a more involved synopsis for you to grapple with: Second Skin takes an intimate look at three sets of...

In most Q&As after my documentary on virtual worlds, "Second Skin," I'm met with the same question, "Why spend time in virtual worlds?" I think it's like asking, "How can you hang out with your friends for so long?" For one thing, there are few places where we are not forced to be ourselves -- the anonymity we arrive to in virtual worlds is empowering. Through it, we're able to engage others without the burden of someone recognizing us, stereotyping us, or seeing us. (Just ask celebrities like Jimmy Fallon, Vin Diesel and Mila Kunis...

There are a handful of overlooked flicks hitting DVD this week, although some were overlooked for a very good reason. Greg Mottola's Adventureland (one of my favourite movies of the year so far) is in stores along with Tony Gilroy's Duplicity starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen, the indie dramedy Sunshine Cleaning starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, and the bland, self-explanatory Fighting starring Channing Tatum. Carlos Cuarón's Spanish soccer comedy Rudo y Cursi is also worth checking out, as is the Oscar-nominated Hurricane Katrina doc Trouble The Water, and don't you dare forget the classic '80s sex comedy Screwballs! What are you picking up this week? Adventureland [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Duplicity [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Fighting [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Sunshine Cleaning [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) Rudo Y Cursi [9] (DVD, Blu-ray [10]) The Informers [11] (DVD, Blu-ray [12]) Screwballs [13] (DVD, Blu-ray [14]) Green Street Hooligans 2 [15] Life is Hot in Cracktown [16] Goodbye Solo [17] American Son [18] Trouble The Water...

Everyone has their own opinion of massive multiplayer online role-playing games, or Mmorpg's for those who aren't savvy with gaming acronyms. Most of us know someone who is obsessed with online role-playing games. With over 50 million people playing online, it's hard to deny the success of games like "World of Warcraft" and "The Sims". Just like the trailer says, it's easy to get lost in these worlds where you can escape and be something more than what you are....

Indie Roundup reviews the past week of news from the independent film community and provides a peek at what's coming soon.
Festivals. The venerable New York Film Festival announced its first titles, while Eugene Hernandez and Brian Brooks of indieWIRE consider the impact of non-programming changes. In news from the other coast, Rachel Rosen is heading back to the City by the Bay to work as programming director for the San Francisco Film Society, reports The Wrap.
Rosen moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles eight years ago and helped transform the Los Angeles Film Festival into a truly major festival in a city that, oddly enough, doesn't give much respect to local film festivals. As Director of Programming, she and Senior Programmer Doug Jones chose a wonderfully diverse selection of international films that were challenging and not always the most audience friendly, yet they were distinctive and memorable. And now she's gone.

This week on a very special episode of Reject Radio, we uncover long-lost Fsr editor Brian Gibson, who brings us tales from down under -- updating us randomly on the future works of Eric Bana. He also joins in as we discuss Steven Spielberg on Halo, Danny Trejo on crime, Ridley Scott on Huxley, Tucker Max on Dr. Abaius' brand of humor and that G.I. Joe movie that just came out. Along with Joe, we also talk French cuisine with Julie & Julia and terrible vacation movies with David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway. And finally, we rock out to some sweet John Hughes movie tunes, dancing our way toward an epic segment three tribute to the man that brought us The Breakfast Club... Watchmen—Director’S Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday...

It's been more than a year since we've talked about Second Skin, the video gaming documentary, but now you can watch the entire movie online for free, via Hulu. In fact, you can just head down beyond the break below to watch it right here on Cinematical. The only thing we can't supply is the popcorn.
If you need a primer on the film, you can read our own Peter Martin's review of the film from 2008. It documents gamers who are fully immersed in games like World of Warcraft and Everquest, and how it affects their lives. It's not afraid to show the bad side, but it also covers the unexpected good sides as well. It's surprisingly engaging, and well, you can't beat the price of admittance.

I find it rather funny that it's indie films like Second Skin that submit themselves to be given away for free online, knowing they need the money way more than the people behind the $33 special 2-disc DVD edition of Transformers. Debuting last year at SXSW, Second Skin tells the stories of a few of the 50 million people who play MMOs online, incluing "World of Warcraft," "Everquest" and "Second Life." The film is now being shown completely free on Hulu (though...

One of my favorite films from last year's SXSW film festival, the Mmorpg addiction documentary Second Skin, is now online and free for all to see. Which eliminates any excuse that you may have previously had for not seeing it. From filmmaking brothers Juan Carlos Piñeiro and Victor Piñeiro, Second Skin focuses on the world of online gaming and the addictions that are formed within the computer-driven worlds and realms of cyberspace. It is a cautionary tale, but also one that promotes understanding -- the understanding that there are social and societal explanations to these gaming addictions, these online communities. As someone who has known a few hardcore gamers in my day, I found it relatable and incredibly well-framed. It doesn't look down on the gaming community, but hands them the microphone and allows them to tell their story. For more of my opinion on the matter, I would point you in the direction of my SXSW...

One of the indie films I enjoyed at the 2008 South By Southwest Film Festival was a documentary called Second Skin, which is about the culture behind the gamers who inhabit the virtual online worlds of World or Warcraft, Everquest and Second Life. Over 50 million people around the world live in these online worlds, and Second Skin takes a look at a few of the characters in this space, running the gamut from a couple who met online in Wow and will be meeting for the first time ever in the real world, to a young man who's addiction to Wow drove him to move into a boarding house as part of a 12-step online gamers self help group called Online Gamers Anonymous. The entire film is now available for free online via Hulu. Watch it now after the jump.

Juan Carlos Pineiro’s “Second Skin” borrows from several contemporary movie traditions. As a portrait of hardcore online gamers, it has elements of sci-fi and futurism in its vision of an entire society based in the digital realm. But people devoted to staying up all night on a “World of Warcraft” binge exist in modern times, cutting themselves off from a larger universe that still exists beyond the computer screen. Thus, “Second …...

Motion capture is a staple of movie-making. It's also extremely expensive. The required equipment can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. But a professor at MIT has invented an entirely new system, for just a fraction of the cost.
Usually, a person being captured has to wear markers--such as little white ping-pong balls--which allow a camera to record the refracted light. Second Skin, created by a team led by Ramesh Raskar, flips the process. A person wears special photosensors; these then pick up near infra-red light being projected by off-the-shelf projectors costing $50. The photosensors in turn capture the light. The light patterns are slightly different at each sensor, and they record a precise position some 500 times per second. The data is then transmitted to a computer via Bluetooth. Each sensor costs just $2. The entire system can be built for as little as $1,000.
The applications of this technology are vast. For one,...

Universal Pictures and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski are teaming for a film about the detrimental impact massive multiplayer online role-playing games have on real life relationships. Stephen Knight (Eastern Promises) will write the script.
The movie will be based on a Wall Street Journal article titled “Is This Man Cheating on His Wife?” (You can read the article in its entirety here.) It chronicles the life of Ric Hoogestraat, a married man who plays the free online game “Second Life” as his virtual avatar Dutch Hoorenbeek, a six-foot-nine, motorcycle-riding strip club owner. In the game he’s worth $1.5 million of the game’s currency, a successful entrepreneur with multiple businesses. In reality the 53-year-old is a diabetic call center operator making $14 an hour and owns pixels created by 1s and 0s.

The fictional online lifestyle is becoming fodder for a new film to be written by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) for director Gore Verbinksi (Pirates of the Caribbean). Universal Studios acquired rights to a Wall Street Journal article from 2007 reporting on the problems one married couple had when the husband became addicted to his fantasy life according to Variety.
Alexandra Alter’s article featured the 53 year-old diabetic chain smoker who spent as many as 20 hours a day living through his Second Life avatar who was buff in appearance. The man’s wife attended support group meetings for those with spouses addicted to the online life and their marriage nearly dissolved.
The fantasy worlds have been the subject of documentaries, including Second Skin, but this is the first dramatic movie to touch on the subject. It’s part of Verbinski’s recently signed first look deal with Universal. He’s also shooting Bioshock,...

Remember the 1985 flick Death Warmed Up? About a kid who was hypnotized to kill his parents, then grew up to take revenge on the scientists who ruined his life? Some may have wondered what happened to Death director David Blyth after that film, and if you’re one of ‘em, we have good news: He’s coming to this year’s Fantasia so you can ask him yourself!
When the official Fantasia 2008 schedule goes live tomorrow, on it you will see two films from Blyth as part of Fantasia’s Documentaries From the Edge series: Transfigured Nights (about webcam mask performance(?)) and Bound for Pleasure (focusing on New Zealand’s suburban B&D scene). As the titles should tip you off, the docs focus on the strange yet fascinating world of fetishism, and Fantasia’s newest programmer, Simon Laperriere, brought both to Montreal for their North American premiere.
