It takes The Matrix about three minutes to become the coolest thing you’ve ever seen. That’s when Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) evades a cop by breaking his arm, punching his throat, and then freezing mid-air so the camera can whip around her before she unleashes a kick that sends him across the room. Three minutes. And everything changed.
But the most impressive part may be the fact that the amazing stuff doesn’t stop there. For the 117 minutes that follow, The Matrix directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski offer an improbable mix of kung fu action, Continental philosophy, and fin de siècle cool. It’s no wonder their movie became a hit in theaters and on video. Nor is it any wonder that so, so many movies and TV shows borrowed from The Matrix, at once cementing the original film’s legacy while also cheapening its effect. In immediate years...

Amazon Prime Video’s epic The Lord of the Rings series won’t arrive until 2022. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for November 2021, Amazon has a pretty major fantasy adaptation to hold us over.
The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Nov. 19 and will bring Robert Jordan’s massive fantasy universe to life. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

Al Kasha, the Academy Award-winning composer who, along with songwriting partner Joel Hirschhorn, won Oscars for the soft rock disaster movie classics “The Morning After” and “We May Never Love Like This Again,” died Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 83.
His death was announced by spokesperson Deborah Radel. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Dominating music charts – and Oscar’s Best Original Song category – in 1973 with “The Morning After,” from The Poseidon Adventure, and again in ’75 with “We May Never Love Like This Again” from The Towering Inferno, Kasha and Hirschhorn returned to film songwriting with 1977’s Disney classic Pete’s Dragon. The duo was Oscar-nominated for that song score and the song “Candle On The Water,” sung by Pete’s Dragon star Helen Reddy.
For his Broadway stage work, Kasha received Tony Award nominations for the scores of 1981’s Copperfield and 1982’s Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

The amount of original programming on Svod services has exploded over the past few years, thus making it harder to stay up to date on all the shows coming to services like Netflix and Amazon Prime. The latter platform’s latest pickup, however, is worth paying special attention to. It’s called Comrade Detective, and it’s a dubbed live-action comedy that boasts an impressive voice cast led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum.
Comrade Detective comes from A24, the acclaimed studio known for its work on indie hits like Moonlight and Room. Here, the setting is 1980s Romania, where a pair of detectives work to find out the truth behind the death of a fellow law enforcement agent. The leads are portrayed by Romanian actors, with Gordon-Levitt and Tatum stepping in to dub their lines into English. Think Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, but with an all-star voice cast and more Cold War jokes.

Steve Oedekerk's 2002 dubbed comedy Kung Pow: Enter the Fist is one of those comedies I'll always have to regret liking when I was around nine-or-ten years old. It's a sophomoric, slappy-happy rip-off of Woody Allen's What's Up, Tiger Lily written with all the sophistication and charm of two middle-school boys riffing on a copy of an old 1970s martial arts feature. It probably had to do with my love of kung fu -- something I still adore today -- and being of the right age. This is all to say, it's one of those black marks in my film-loving life from which I constantly atone for. It didn't make a dent in the box office, but I suppose it had a modern following on home video who clamored up its irreverence in a pre-YouTube era as I did then. Does that warrant the need to have a sequel...

Tony Jaa is one of this generation’s most underrated cinematic martial artists, ruling foreign cinema with furious Muay Thai fury – but you wouldn’t know that from The Protector 2. In fact, for anyone who doesn’t know Tony Jaa’s body of work, avoid The Protector 2 at all costs. Go watch Ong-bak or The Protector, two phenomenal displays of fluid fighting that show Jaa’s real talent – not this horrid clusterf#ck of laughable green screens, cartoonish villains, Star Wars sound effects, and dizzying cinematography. Usually movies with constant badassery contain moments of exhilarating fighting, but the longer Prachya Pinkaew’s train-wreck of a sequel lasted, the more I debated if being pummeled by Tony Jaa in person would have been more enjoyable. At least my eyes would have been swollen shut?

Listen, I know we’ve all been waiting with bated breath for that The Incredible Mr. Limpet remake to finally get out the door and into theaters. Details have been scarce ever since the project was first announced in the late 90s- first, Kung Pow: Enter the Fist mastermind Steve Oedekerk was ready to direct, with Jim Carrey as the astounding man-fish. Oedekerk stepped down, but the troops were rallied and Brad Bird was offered the gig. Then, Bird caught a glimpse of Mr. Limpet’s new look: a CGI fish with Carrey’s human face transplanted on via mo-cap. He described it thusly: “If you saw this in the water, you would get out of the water and run screaming and tell everyone the world was ending.” Plans for the film fell apart shortly afterward. Then, they fell back together when Enchanted director Kevin Lima boarded the project. Zach Galifianakis was in talks to play a...

No, we’re not just talking about old movies seen within newer movies here; this is extreme stock footage – using the old to create a new narrative, something for fun, or even for the sake of story. And in the interest of avoiding every film that ever used stock footage – this is the select few that did so in much more creative ways than simply sticking it the background or in a cutaway like some Ed Wood film. This is stock footage with a twist. 7. Superman Returns Resurrects Marlon Brando It takes serious balls to resurrect a dead actor for your movie, and Bryan Singer’s balls are so serious they once played Hamlet at the Old Vic. So Microsoft debuted the Xbox One this week and the video game fanboys dropped trou and prayed to Lord Gates. From the lobby scene in The Matrix to Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader squaring off in The Empire Strikes Back, the most effective movie fight scenes generally rely on objects designed for inflicting harm.
Every once in a while though, a gun runs out of bullets, a knife gets kicked out of reach, or a screenwriter becomes bored. The result is an impractical, yet effective use of a common object as a weapon.
"Did he really just beat that man to death with a dildo?" He sure did -- and that's not even the weirdest improvised weapon in our supercut above. Enjoy!

A lot of speculating is going on about Star Trek and the direction J.J. Abrams’ reboot will take in the upcoming sequel. Will Benedict Cumberbatch be Khan? Should he be? What will become of Spock and Uhura?
All across the Internet, debate rages on these and the other finer points of Hollywood’s next big budget foray into Gene Roddenberry’s house. At its core, though, Star Trek has always been less about effects and action and more about people. It is so special to the fans that they seek out behind the scenes trivia, satirize it and create original stories to keep it going. In the absence of new information about Star Trek 2 why not take a look at some of the best the fans have to offer?

We.re about a month away from Jon Favreau.s Cowboys & Aliens, which pairs James Bond (Daniel Craig) and Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) against hostile invaders from another planet. But what would Cowboys have looked like if the version that was in development in 1997 had seen the light of day? Safe to say it would be very different from Favreau.s finished product, primarily because Steve Oedekerk, helmer of Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Kung Pow: Enter the Fist was on board to direct. To quote Ace, .Alllllllrighty then!. Oedekerk, who receives a story credit on Favreau.s upcoming film, was going to do a version that suggested the aliens had lived among the native Americans for a while, and trouble occurs when cowboys get their hands on extraterrestrial technology. The site io9.com, which is developing this story, has pieces of concept art from Rolf Mohr like this:...

It's gotta suck ass playing Superman. It's the Madden curse of the comic-book superhero world. George Reeves, the original Man of Steel, decided to swallow some prompting the very first unoriginal meme tackiness of making "faster than a speeding bullet" jokes, a tragedy only to be surpassed by the agonizing demise of Christopher Reeve. While Dean Cain hasn't quite suffered physical "slings and arrows," metaphorically, his career has been wallowing in ignominy. Granted, our man Clark's been working steady -- but in the likes of the made for TV Gentle Ben movie and its sequel and the forthcoming Halloween Dog. The latest Ka-Lel (with due respect to Henry Cavill who has yet to don the S) is Brandon Routh, and honestly, I wouldn't know what to do with his career either. After the excreble Superman Returns, Routh's been kind of bobbing aimlessly adrift, popping up in "Chuck" or the occasional...

88,000? Do your math; I rounded up to be safe.
The Lorax I am not, I do not speak for the trees. I however do speak for the Me-Tree, the tree that’s me (Dr. Seuss was a genius, I’m not. I know.)
