We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

Cherry Jones could score three Emmy nominations this year for her supporting turn on the Apple TV+ limited series “Five Days at Memorial” and her guest appearances on “Poker Face” and “Succession.” It’s those double guest bids, though, that would put her in rarefied air as the three-time Emmy winner would become the 11th person to earn drama and comedy guest acting nominations in the same year.
Since the guest categories as we know them were standardized in 1989, 10 people have pulled off this feat. Jack Gilford was the first, getting shortlisted that very year for “The Golden Girls” and “thirtysomething.” In 1991, Colleen Dewhurst won comedy guest actress for “Murphy Brown” and was nominated in drama for “Road to Avonlea.” Gwen Verdon snagged noms in 1993 for her guest spots on “Dream On” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” while Marlee Matlin followed in 1994 with bids for “Seinfeld” and “Picket Fences.

After scoring her first Emmy win in a lead acting category last year, Jean Smart returns to the Emmy race for Season 2 of HBO Max’s “Hacks.” Her portrayal of Deborah Vance is as biting as ever, as the seasoned comic leaves the casinos of Las Vegas behind for life on the road. Plopping Vance into a fancy tour bus that stops all over the country provides ample opportunity for introspection from this oft-jaded star, in addition to constantly changing scenery. This mix of humor and heart could be just the right formula to help the actress land back-to-back Emmy wins.

The only thing better than receiving one Emmy nomination is receiving two Emmy nominations. But earning multiple bids in the same year as a performer is not as uncommon as one might think, especially with television moving toward shorter seasons and limited series still rising in popularity. This has allowed actors to appear in more projects throughout the year, giving them additional chances to be recognized. But there’s another reason it happens too: guest appearances.
So far, 10 performers have been nominated in both the drama and comedy guest categories in the same year. The first to do it was Jack Gilford, who in 1989 was nominated for his work on the comedy “The Golden Girls” and the drama “thirtysomething.” He was followed in 1991 by Colleen Dewhurst, who was nominated for her appearances on “Murphy Brown” and “Road to Avonlea,” winning for the former. Kenan Thompson joins the vaunted few in Emmy history who have received double nominations in the acting categories. Thompson’s are highly unusual, with both in the full-time regular series categories for lead and supporting comedy. He received a Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nom Tuesday for his portrayal of Kenan Williams in his eponymous NBC comedy series. He also earned a Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series nom for Saturday Night Live. These are not Thompson’s first Emmy noms, however. Tom Spezialy executive produced HBO’s “Watchmen,” one of the most acclaimed superhero television shows in recent memory. Now, he’s setting his sights on a Marvel character via “Silk,” Sony Television Pictures’ upcoming live-action series based on the Spider-Man character.
Deadline recently reported that Spezialy, whose credits also include “The Leftovers” and “Castle Rock,” has signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios. Part of that deal reportedly includes Spezialy serving as an executive producer and showrunner for “Silk,” which hails from Sony Pictures Television. The series is reportedly headed to Amazon Prime Video, which would make “Silk” one of the only upcoming Marvel-branded shows to not premiere on Disney+.
Spezialy will reportedly executive produce alongside Laureen Moon (“Atypical”), who wrote the “Silk” television adaptation, which is based on the Korean-American comic book superhero who is closely associated with Spider-Man. The series is also backed by veterans of recent Spider-Man...

Once one of the biggest nights on television, home of such hits as Golden Girls, Saturday has become a scripted wasteland where cancelled series go to air their final episodes.
The CW may change that. The network recently reached an agreement with its affiliates to take over Saturday primetime starting next fall. Today, the CW unveiled its fall 2021 schedule, with new episodes of Whose Line is It Anyway? and World’s Funniest Animals.
“At this time it’s alternative programming,” the CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz said during a press call about the fall schedule Tuesday. “When we get to 2022, we will probably look at putting some scripted programming on but we have not fully fleshed that out, we’ve been more focused on 4Q of 21.”
He would not elaborate whether these would be CW originals or acquisitions. We have seen a handful of acquired scripted shows on Saturdays in the past decade,...

Titled “Slay,” the series focuses on Carson Jones. She is described as a bold, witty teenager with afro puffs, leather boots, seventies cool, and – thanks to her mother’s ancient African bloodline – supernatural gifts and the responsibility to use them to protect Virginia’s Historic Triangle (one of the most haunted areas in the country) from the forces of darkness.
Julian Johnson will write and co-executive produce, with Pam Veasey supervising and executive producing. Regina and her sister Reina King will executive produce via their production company, Royal Ties. CBS Television Studios will produce.
Regina is fresh off her Emmy win for her starring role in the HBO limited series “Watchmen.” It marked the fourth Emmy of her career, having previously won twice for “American Crime” and again for “Seven Seconds.
