Nikki Haley is — at least for now — refusing to drop out of the 2024 Republican primary. Following her second-place finish in New Hampshire, she delivered an upbeat concession speech, promising to continue her campaign at least through South Carolina’s primary later this month. “Death Is a Problem for the Living,” now also in Italy.
The Finnish black comedy, directed by Teemu Nikki of “Euthanizer” fame, will premiere at the Rome Film Festival in October.
“I am so proud of everything we have made together, especially ‘Euthanizer’ and [Venice Horizons Extra winner] ‘The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic,’ but this one is certainly the most consistent. And the most surprising, because you really don’t know what’s going to happen to these characters,” says Jani Pösö, who produces for Helsinki-based It’s Alive Films.
Co-produced by Andrea Romeo for Italy’s The Culture Business, and scored by Marco Biscarini, it will be distributed in Italy by I Wonder Pictures in the spring, with Scandinavian Film Distribution overseeing the Finnish release.

While many Anarchists have families that are now checking offspring into, gasp, post secondary education we are all children at heart. So perhaps a few years ago a movie like Snot & Splash: The Mystery of Disappearing Holes would have appealed to physically younger versions of our offspring we are led to believe that we have done our jobs right and a movie like this will still appeal to their inner child. At the very least the title Snot & Splash still makes us giggle. Our friends at FilmSharks have acquired the world sales rights for the Finnish children's movie Teemu Nikki, the guy who made Euthanizer, the movie about a guy who euthenizes animals but crosses paths with white supremicists. Yeah. That...

In the opening scene of Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson’s searching documentary Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, the poet Nikki Giovanni shows her cards: “I don’t remember a lot of things,” she says as images of a glittering galaxy and archival footage of the poet as a child flash onscreen. “I remember what is important and I make up the rest. That’s what storytelling is all about.”
Brewster and Stephenson don’t question Giovanni’s proposition; they find purpose in it. Her words become a statement of intention (This is my story), a warning (My boundaries are firm) and a rejection of formal conventions (How do you stretch the boundaries of biography?). In that last question, Giovanni is whispering back to Audre Lorde, the poet who coined the term biomythography to describe her book Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, a text that combined biography,...

Yasuke is a groundbreaking new anime that fuses fact and fiction. The six-episode original series streaming on Netflix now is the brainchild of comic artist and animation director LeSean Thomas. The titular role in Yasuke is voiced by Oscar-nominated Lakeith Stanfield who is also one of the producers. Yasuke comes from Japan’s animation house Mappa (Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association) who also produced noteworthy animes like Attack on Titan, Rage of Baphomet, and Punch Line. Grammy-nominated artist Flying Lotus (a.k.a. FlyLo) provides the soundtrack and is also another producer.
Yasuke is somewhat in the same vein as Afro Samurai or Samurai Jack in propelling an iconic Samurai figure into a rich fantasy world.
“It just sits right alongside Afro Samurai and Samurai Jack,” acknowledges Thomas, “They’re going to be compared regardless because those are the only three that are being pushed to the Western entertainment. So,...

The pitch for Quibi is that you can “watch movie-quality shows designed for your phone.” The app allows users to switch seamlessly between the traditional landscape orientation and a mobile-friendly portrait view. This is revolutionary technology, but most of their available comedies and dramas could be mistaken for having been retrofitted for the gimmick. “Dummy” starring and executive produced by Anna Kendick stands out in this way. Instead of cropping the sides and re-centering the widescreen image like in other shows, director Tricia Brock and cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt properly push the medium forward.

The portrait version of “Dummy” compensates for its comparative skinniness with a taller image. The picture extends above and below what the horizontal version depicts (even rotated slightly above), allowing new space to convey information and also allowing more of the horizontal version to appear.

The fact of the matter is, sometimes bad characters happen to good TV shows.
Whether plagued by snoozy storylines, less-than-stellar dialogue or so-so casting, not all characters become beloved fan favorites. Though we hoped that some of those who landed on our list of Bad Characters From Good TV Shows would be paralyzed by a spider bite and buried alive (too soon, Lost‘s Nikki and Paulo?), many instead became recurring players or series regulars who were unfortunately tailor-made to stay, grating on our patience and grabbing precious screen time on some of our favorite shows.
