By now the inspiring story of Sir Nicholas Winton and the 669 children he saved from near certain death at the hand of the Nazis on the eve of World War II in Europe has been well told in books, documentaries, television programs, a 60 Minutes segment, and many other ways. Even a myth of sorts has been created around this heroic man that isn’t quite the whole truth, but nevertheless Nicky, as he was known, was indeed a hero. He also kept his story secret for 50 years until a BBC show called That’s Life uncovered it and became a sensation in England in the late 80’s. Winton never felt he kept his efforts a half century earlier “secret”, instead he “just never talked about it”.

“One Life” tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?

The juxtaposition at the core of director James Hawes’s frustratingly staid One Life is between the gravity and urgency of Nicholas Winton’s Kindertransport rescue movement, which began almost a year before the start of World War II, and the man’s relative obscurity in 1987 living in Maidenhead, England. Winton helped to save 669 children in Prague from the horrors of the Holocaust, so Hawes’s film constitutes an attempt at immortalizing an unsung hero. But given the profound lack of risk that it takes in depicting Winton’s heroic efforts, One Life seems ironically destined to also fade into obscurity.
Throughout, One Life toggles between two time periods. In one, the young Winton (Johnny Flynn) conceptualizes and then carries out his humanitarian mission to move as many refugee (and mainly Jewish) children as he could out of Czechoslovakia, and in the other, the seventysomething Winton (Antony Hopkins) lives a...

Norah Jones has returned to announce her ninth studio album, Visions, out March 8th. She’s also mapped out a brief East Coast tour and shared the album’s lead single, “Running.” Stream it below.
Visions serves as Jones’ first album since 2020’s Pick Me Up Off the Floor, and is described in a statement as being about “feeling free, wanting to dance, making it right, and acceptance of what life brings.” Produced by Leon Michels, Visions features a more uplifting and soulful sound than her previous record.
“The reason I called the album Visions is because a lot of the ideas came in the middle of the night or in that moment right before sleep, and ‘Running’ was one of them where you’re half asleep and kind of jolted awake,” Jones said in a press release. “We did most of the songs in the same way where I...

The marketing materials for Anthony Hopkins latest feature film, a Holocaust biopic titled “One Life,” are set to be amended after controversy ensued over the lack of reference to Jews.
“One Life” tells the story of Nicholas Winton (played by Hopkins), better known as the British Oscar Schindler. Winton helped save the lives of over 600 children – the majority of them Jewish – from the Nazis during World War II.
But there has been disquiet over marketing for the movie after it was claimed Jews had been erased from the synopsis.
The furore started after British media retailer HMV tweeted about the film and referred to the children saved by Winton as “Central European” rather than Jewish. A number of independent cinemas also used the term “Central European” instead of “Jewish” while describing the film on their websites.
See-Saw Films, who produced “One Life,” and Warner Bros. Pictures., who are distributing it in the U.

In 2008's "The Dark Knight," Heath Ledger's Joker preached that the people in charge of Gotham City shouldn't be afraid to "introduce a little anarchy" into their world. The citizens didn't that time around, but it's a sentiment that Joaquin Phoenix's sad-sack villain seemed to take to heart for the next iteration of the character, in Todd Phillips' polarizing 2019 film "Joker." Phoenix's take on the Clown Prince of Crime is a far cry from anything DC fans had seen on screen before, as Phillips made the movie by pulling as much from the works of Paul Schrader and Martin Scorsese as he did from the superhero comics oeuvre.
With an R-rating, a Venice Film Festival release, and the promise of a standalone story, "Joker" arrived on the scene with a veneer of unusual prestige for a comic book movie. It also immediately divided fans and audiences, thanks in...

Fidlar are back. The band has announced fall 2023 tour dates in the US and Europe, and shared a new single, “Nudge.” Check out the song and their full list of upcoming dates below, and grab your tickets here.
“Nudge” begins with an understated arrangement, as frontman Zac Carper relays stories about receiving “nudges,” one from a judge, and another from his “chick,” who informs him that he’s making her “sick.” At this point, the guitar riff that’s anchored the song thus far bursts open, and the band lays down a thrashy interlude worthy of a good ol’ fashion mosh pit.
Bringing the arrangement back down, Carper tells of receiving one more “nudge,” this time from his friends in the form of an intervention, to which he offers the same response he had offered in the previous two stories: “Well, excuse me, officers.” After that, the energy kicks into a high gear again,...

A classically crafted feature debut from veteran TV director James Hawes (“Black Mirror”), “One Life” intercuts two eras 50 years apart in the long life of humble British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton (1909-2015), referred to by some as “the British Schindler.” The biopic serves as a testament to the power of good, with a prestige cast including a fine, understated Anthony Hopkins as the reflective, older Winton, still haunted by the tragic end to his plan to save European child refugees, and Johnny Flynn as his energetic younger self, who embodies the belief that that if something is not impossible, then there must be a way to do it. Although the film as a whole struggles to match the poignancy of its finale, a re-creation of a famous 1988 clip from the British TV program “That’s Life!,” it nevertheless serves as an urgent reminder of the importance of individual action at a...

Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” has become of of the biggest standards in the history of music. Notably, it didn’t chart as highly as his cover of “Old MacDonald.” Regardless, Sinatra’s “My Way” changed Paul Anka’s career.

While “My Way” is possibly Sinatra’s most famous song today, it didn’t even hit the top 10 or the top 20! The tune peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, lasting on the chart for eight weeks. It was outperformed by “Somethin’ Stupid,” “That’s Life,” “Strangers in the Night,” and other 1960s Sinatra songs that get less airplay today.
It was even outperformed by Sinatra’s cover of “Old MacDonald,” which he gave the variant title “Ol’ McDonald.” That tune peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for nine weeks.

Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life” doesn’t sound much like Ray Charles’ music. Despite that, the song was originally meant for Charles. During an interview, the song’s co-writer explained how Nancy Sinatra helped her father put out the track before Charles had the chance.
Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra | Michael Ochs Archives / Stringer The lyrics for Frank Sinatra’s ‘That’s Life’ were taken away from Ray Charles’ office
Dean Kay co-wrote “That’s Life.” According to his website, he tried to pitch the tune to Ray Charles at first. Instead, an unknown singer named Marion Montgomery recorded it first. Then, O.C. Smith took a crack at the song.
Sinatra heard Smith’s cover on the radio and wanted the track for himself. He asked his daughter, Nancy Sinatra, to get the rights to it. Kay felt that it would’ve been difficult to pitch a Charles-style song to Sinatra,...

“That’s life” is often heard throughout Lucian Pintilie’s adaptation of Ion Băieșu’s novel The Oak. It’s such a sweeping response to the grotesqueries that mark everyday life amid the death throes of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s dictatorship, during which the film is set, that it practically becomes a shibboleth. The words may seem little more than a verbal shrug, but in the mouths of Pintilie’s characters, full to bursting with lust for life, they express a liberatory side of absurdism that goes beyond mere politics. That the meaning and the mechanisms of their lives are unknowable is as much cause for jubilation as despair.
Fittingly, The Oak opens with a death—that of Truica (Virgil Andriescu), former colonel in the Securitate (Romania’s secret police agency during its communist regime) and father to Nela (Maia Morgenstern), the film’s protagonist. As his caretaker, Nela projects for him...

Derren Brown fans have called the illusionist’s latest show “absolutely beautiful” after he dedicated it to his late father.
Showman, which premiered on stage last year and was screened on Channel 4 on Sunday night (23 April), saw Brown, 52, tell numerous anecdotes about his father, who died at the height of the Covid pandemic.
Brown said he felt “guilty” for the fact that he could not give his father a “proper send-off”.
Talking about sentimental items he had found around his father’s house, he said: “It was the weirdest thing because they just suddenly looked like tat, they just looked like stuff you’d find in the back of a junk shop.
“It was like they had no meaning at all, and yet they were so meaningful, they sort of became more and less significant than they had been before. It really struck me that the right sort of...

That’s Life, the new Fidlar EP coming March 17th, was conceived in the throws of a Lake Powell Dmt ceremony, and the band’s latest single, “Centipede,” captures that energy with violently ecstatic guitar paired with skin-crawling epiphanies.
The skate punk trio’s last studio project was the 2019 album Almost Free, and they began to conceive That’s Life on a 2020 trip through the southwest that featured lots of hiking, sun, and psychedelics. Frontman Zac Carper composed the first draft of lyrics while tripping on Dimethyltryptamine, and so far that session has yielded the two-minute adrenaline rush “Fsu,” as well as “Sand on the Beach,” and “Taste the Money,” all of which appear on the EP.
“Centipede” is another straight-up ripper, though once your lizard brain lets you take a breath, your frontal lobe might chuckle at the lyrics. “My girlfriend thinks I’ll abandon her,” Carper sings, “She’s my Oasis,...

Tony and Emmy winner Robert Morse died April 20 at the age of 90.
Morse’s son Charlie confirmed his passing to Los Angeles’ ABC affiliate via Deadline, and Morse’s death was announced on Twitter by writer/producer Larry Karaszewski, a vice president on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Morse starred in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” on Broadway in 1961, winning a Tony Award. He reprised his role of ambitious window washer J. Pierrepont Finch for the 1967 film adaptation of the musical.

Robert Morse, who brought a playful, eccentric sensibility to AMC’s “Mad Men” as the namesake head honcho of fictional ad agency Sterling Cooper, has died. He was 90.
Morse was a two-time Tony Award winner, beginning with best actor in a comedy for the 1961 production of “How to Succeed at Business Without Really Trying.” He won again in 1990 for playing Truman Capote in the play “Tru,” this time for best actor featured in a play, making him one of only four actors to win both honors.
He also won an Emmy for a live TV performance of “Tru” a few years later.
But it was his turn as Bert Cooper, head of ad agency Sterling Cooper on AMC’s “Mad Men,” that modern audiences will remember best.
Morse played Cooper as a benevolent, eccentric leader who loved exotic artwork and going barefoot, insisting on both a tight ship and a light mood.

Sally Kellerman, who was Oscar nominated for her supporting role as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s “Mash” feature film, died Thursday in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 84.
Her publicist Alan Eichler confirmed her death, and her daughter Claire added that she had been suffering from dementia for the past five years.
Among her other roles were a cameo in Altman’s “The Player,” a professor in Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School” and a Starfleet officer in the “Star Trek” episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
The willowy blonde actress with the characteristically throaty voice appeared in two Altman films in 1970; the other was the more experimental “Brewster McCloud,” in which she starred with Bud Cort and Michael Murphy. In this film, which did not have a conventional narrative, Kellerman played Louise, the mother of Cort’s bewinged character, Brewster.

Grammy winners for pop over the decades have run the gamut from The Beatles to Billie Eilish. This year the two pop album categories include past winners and first-time nominees. But who will strike gold this time? Let’s take a look.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: R&b album races include tough match-up between H.E.R., Jon Batiste, and Jazmine Sullivan Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album
There is virtually no way Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett don’t win here. Their album is not only the only one nominated in another pop category, it’s also the only one nominated for both Record and Album of the Year, not to mention Best Engineered Album and Best Music Video. The similarly beloved Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, the former who actually beat Bennett last time they competed in this category, could perhaps surprise … But don’t overthink this, “Love For Sale” is winning.
