this special was amazing. It was my first introduction to many things. Actor Jonathan Brandis and of course the amazing and unmatched showmen ship of Lance Burton. I used to sit down to watch this special every single year. What fascinated me so much was the uniqueness of Lance Burton. Lance was unlike any other magician I had ever seen. Not because he was younger or different or whatever but because he really made it a show. Any trick he uses was pure distraction because of how charismatic he was. His now famous dueling swords trick was shown one of the first times on this show. I miss it. If you remember it. If you have it. Tivo it. Divo it. Because it truly is a diamond in the rough.

I have fond memories of this airing just after arriving home from trick or treating. I wasn't familiar with Lance Burton at the time, only Marc Summers, and would love to revisit! I'm sure there's a ton of nostalgia and overlooked illusions packed into this childhood gem!
Never got to re-watch Mystery Magic Special, though in college (Boston, 2001-2003) my roommates and I discovered a buried cable channel from Nickelodeon channel, not unlike MTV2, which aired all of the original 80s programming: Double Dare, Super Sloppy Double Dare, Family Double Dare, Finders Keepers, Hidden Temple, and Guts among others.
We'd gather in the living room, not much different than as children (though probably made trivia drinking games, for lack of a Sundae Slide...) These shows really ought to be picked up by Paramount+ or Netflix. Marc Summers played a fun and special part twice in my younger years... hope he is well :)
