Zooey Deschanel is widely recognized for her deadpan comedy roles but the actress expanded her portfolio by working in dramatic roles with projects like Manic (2001), All the Real Girls (2003), and The Driftless Area (2015). However, portraying the role of Jess Day on the Fox sitcom, New Girl was what fans usually remember her by, since she was one of the lead cast, who was there from the beginning to the end of the series.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we have a conversation about what it means to be underappreciated. Not underrated necessarily. But underappreciated. And, boy, is Don Cheadle underappreciated. The Oscar-nominated actor has been elevating films in supporting roles since the late ‘80s.
Our guest today is Mitchell Beaupre, senior editor at Letterboxd.
Our B-Sides today include: The Assassination of Richard Nixon, Traitor, The Guard, and No Sudden Move. There is also a brief-but-worthwhile tangent on the Scott Caan-directed (!) indie The Dog Problem. Also the Sundance darling Manic from the early 2000s.
We discuss Cheadle’s incredible ability to listen as an actor. There may not be a better active listener working today. We offer some context into legend Steve Martin (who...

The Internet demands to know: did Sydney Sweeney fabricate parts of her inspiring backstory?
Let’s rewind. In November, the 26-year-old actress and budding producer graced the cover of Women’s Health to promote a starring role opposite Glen Powell in the romantic comedy Anyone But You. Writer Lindsay Geller recapped Sweeney’s humble beginnings as a teenager who made extra cash by babysitting, cleaning restaurant bathrooms and leading tours at Universal Studios to help her family pay the bills while she was trying to make it in Hollywood. “I watched my parents lose a lot. We filed for bankruptcy, and they lost their house back home on the lake,” she said. “We couldn’t afford life in L.A.”

I have never been a huge fan of Charlotte York Goldenblatt, the Upper East Side princess played by Kristin Davis in Sex and the City. As a New York Jew, I didn’t relate to her Wasp-y country club optimism, nor was I particularly charmed by her wide-eyed pearl-clutching at her friends’ sexual exploits. (Dude, you copped to rimming your first husband over eggs Benedict. We didn’t forget!) I found her grating and prissy and the most unforgivably callous of the four; in the final season, when she exploded...

Suga of BTS has his priorities in order. Earlier this year, the musician shared his solo album D-Day, which took him across North America in April and May. He made the most of his time on that leg of the tour, even bringing Halsey out in Los Angeles to debut “Suga’s Interlude” from her album Manic. Now, he’s released another collaboration with her — “Lilith (Diablo IV Anthem)” — and he still has shows scheduled in Singapore and Seoul this month. Still, his focus is on playing Diablo IV every chance he gets.

The world Halsey created around her fifth studio album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power was driven by chaos, a battle for some semblance of control, and a yearning for unreachable emotional intimacy. In the IMAX film she wrote and released alongside the record, the singer took on the role of Queen Lila, whose positioning on the throne lends itself to bloodshed and royal disruption. When the album’s deep cut “Lilith” appears in the movie, lyrics about being corrupted from the inside soundtrack her character’s downfall.

Halsey is back in the BTS universe with “Lilith,” a new collaborative single with Suga. It’s released as the “anthem” for Blizzard Entertainment’s new video game Diablo IV, which is also out today.
“Lilith” is exactly what you’d expect from a song made specifically for a video game. Its Diablo-themed music video opens with Halsey donning a hooded black robe as she walks through a candlelit church. “Might fuck around and just succumb to my aggression/ I taste blood and it’s turned to an obsession,” she sings as she takes off the robe to reveal the inevitable sexy sorceress costume underneath. Who cares if arrows are pummeling down to give her numerous bloody lesions — the stilettos are cute, dammit!
Suga then appears inexplicably, surrounded by a cloud of fog that obscures his face. “We just fuck things up, yeah I noticed,” he sings in his entirely-English verse.

Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.
MaXXXine is the third title in A24‘s first major horror franchise, on the heels of West’s films X and Pearl, both of which were released to much acclaim last year. The ’70s-set X had Goth pulling double duty as Maxine, who sees her pornography-shooting friends violently murdered in Texas, and one of their elderly assailants, Pearl. The latter film, set in 1918, meanwhile, served up an origin story for the latter villain character.

Florence Pugh has released her first music as a singer-songwriter – the songs “I Hate Myself” and “The Best Part”.
The tracks are included on the soundtrack to her new film A Good Person, a drama written and directed by her ex-partner, Zach Braff.
“I wrote these songs for my character Allison in the movie to perform, but also as a way to process and digest her mindset and her low headspace,” Pugh explained, per Total Entertainment.
“It was unbelievably helpful and hard; I wanted a song to reflect the self-hatred she had for herself in a way that the audience can truly understand.”
“The Best Part” is an ambient release featuring apologies for a “weak heart”
On “I Hate Myself”, against a mournful piano tune, Pugh sings: “And I want days of pain/ Oh, to feel the things I need/ To pay off this shame/ And I know that makes...

Florence Pugh has opened up about working with Zach Braff in his new film A Good Person.
Pugh was in a relationship with the Scrubs star from 2019 to 2022, with the couple living together in New York for a period.
The Little Women actor revealed in August of last year that she and Braff had broken up.
During an appearance on Monday night’s (20 March) episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Pugh spoke about the film, and offered an insight into her post-breakup relationship with Braff.
Discussing A Good Person, Pugh agreed with Fallon’s suggestion that she was Braff’s “muse”, remarking: “He wrote it for me. I was his muse.
“There’s so much ease with reading a script when someone knows how you talk, and how far they can push you, and what you’re capable of doing.”

The following contains The Flash spoilers
The Flash Season 8 Episode 10
As an individual episode, The Flash’s “Reckless” is a fairly uneventful hour. The team is embarrassingly unsuccessful at stopping the mysterious black fire that’s cold fusion burning people to death all over town. Deon’s freaking out about Iris’s time sickness, which still doesn’t make any sense at all. Sue Dearbon continues to display her impressive array of personal outerwear. And Iris maybe sort of accidentally completely erases someone from existence, but somehow that’s not the A plot this week. Cool deal, show!
As a person who loves both Caitlin and Frost, I’m always excited when The Flash attempts to give the pair of them something like a “family” story, but as Snow bonding hours go, “Reckless” is pretty weak. Frost’s sudden desire to risk herself at all costs simply to help faceless strangers is admirable on paper,...

Halsey has released an extended edition of their recent album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, which features two new tracks. The songs, Nightmare Reprise” and “People disappear here,” join the originals for a 16-track release.
“The extended version of Iichliwp is out now featuring the new and moody ethereal goodness that is ‘People Disappear Here’ plus a @nineinchnails reimagined version of ‘Nightmare,'” the singer noted on Twitter. The new songs follow live renditions of tracks from the album, including “Nightmare,” which Halsey released over the holidays.

The Grammy for Best Alternative Album has been awarded to some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the past couple of decades. Winners like Radiohead’s “In Rainbows,” Bon Iver’s “Bon Iver,” David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” and most recently Fiona Apple’s “Fetch the Bolt Cutters” remain classics for music lovers. This year the race is one of the tightest ever, with a group of contenders including past Grammy nominees and exciting new bets. But all five were showered with praised by music journalists. Let’s take a look at each nominee.
Fleet Foxes’ “Shore” starts the list. This album came out at the start of the eligibility season, so it’s safe to say it carries some passion to have edged out more recent contenders for the nomination. The album earned an 87 on Metacritic, which is the second highest score out of the nominees this year. Fleet...

Halsey‘s concept album “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power” dropped on August 27. It’s the fourth studio album for the 26-year-old singer-songwriter, and it comes just a year-and-a-half after her previous release, 2020’s critically acclaimed “Manic.” Will this collection, inspired by her recent experience of pregnancy and childbirth, get her back to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart? It would be her second album to do so.
Her debut album “Badlands” was released in 2015 and debuted at number-two with 115,000 album units, which are calculated by combining album sales, track sales, and online streams. Her followup, 2017’s “Hopeless Fountain Kingdom,” launched at number-one with 106,000 units. Then came “Manic,” which missed the number-one spot, launching in the runner-up position, but it vastly outperformed her previous albums in its first week, achieving 239,000 units. She only felt short of the top spot because she was up against Eminem, whose “Music...

Earlier this month, Halsey released a video that followed them walking barefoot through the immaculate halls of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, eyeing historic paintings of the Madonna and Child before revealing the baroque, sacrosanct cover art for their fourth album, If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power. The image depicts Halsey, who just gave birth in July, holding a baby, their left breast exposed, in an ornate portrait of a mother modeled after Jean Fouquet’s Gothic diptych Virgin & Child Surrounded by Angels.

After the neon watercolor madness of Manic, Halsey is embracing a completely new era of art in her fourth studio album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power. Abbreviated as Iichliwp, the new album - produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - is an examination of pregnancy and childbirth, which makes it fitting that the cover art, taken by Luca Garrido, depicts the mom-to-be as a combination of "the Madonna and the Wh*re," challenging the idea that women must be perceived as either saintly virgins or sexual deviants. On July 7, Halsey unveiled the stunning Renaissance-style artwork, which shows her seated on a gilded throne with a baby on her lap, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. If the gorgeous cover art is any indication of what to expect from her new album, we're ready to listen. Find out everything we know about Halsey's upcoming album ahead.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Despite the current global pandemic, this year’s Grammy Awards are heavily competitive when it comes to nominations. This year the pop field is stacked with commercially successful hits, including multiple returning champs. So let’s take a look at the hotly contested race for Best Pop Vocal Album.
While this race is usually stacked with some of the biggest pop artists of each year, the contest this year seems to be focused on six particular albums vying for five spots. One of these is The Weeknd’s “After Hours,” which has been entered in this field instead of Best Progressive R&b Album despite his previous albums competing as R&b recordings (his “Beauty Behind the Madness” and “Starboy” both won Best Urban Contemporary Album).

Halsey celebrated her 26th birthday on Tuesday by dropping the video for “929.” The track is off her latest LP, Manic.
Directed by Peter Donaghy, the clip opens with a crib and a rocking horse. “I really was born at 9:29 a.m. on 9/29,” Halsey says with a laugh. “You think I’m lying but I’m being dead serious/Okay, I’ll prove it.” As the camera shifts to home video footage of her family, she sings: “Well who am I? I’m almost 25/Can’t remember half the time that I’ve been alive.

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards are held in 2021, but the eligibility period for these kudos celebrating the best in music actually started on September 1, 2019, ending on August 31, 2020. So who will win Album of the Year?
This eligibility period is new for the Grammys. The recording academy moved up their calendar in 2020 in response to the Oscars, which moved their ceremony up to early February, which was when the Grammys usually aired. So the Grammys shifted their telecast to early January and adopted an eligibility calendar that ended a month earlier.

But that’s not the only change the Grammys have undergone in recent years. For the 61st annual event held in 2019, the academy expanded its top four general field categories from five nominees to eight in part as a response to criticisms over a lack of diversity among the nominees and winners.

The Grammy Award for Record of the Year goes to the artists, producers, engineers and mixers behind the year’s best recording. So who will win when awards are handed out in 2021? The eligibility period for the 63rd annual kudos is September 1, 2019 through August 31, 2020. Scroll down to see the top contenders.
The Grammy eligibility period used to be a little different. It previously ran from October 1 through September 30, but the recording academy shifted everything by a month as a result of the Oscars decision to hold their 2020 Oscars in early February, which had been the Grammys’ turf. So music’s biggest night moved to January and it tweaked its calendar. That means a lot of 2021’s major contenders had already been released by the time the 2020 awards were handed out.

Welcome to the hot seat, Halsey. On Thursday, the singer joined First We Feast's Hot Ones star-studded roster with a fiery interview. Alongside host Sean Evans, Halsey put her strength to the test as she made her way through 10 chicken wings, each hotter than the one before. With every wing came an equally scorching question, which allowed the "Without Me" singer to cover everything from her new album Manic to the famous names that make up her inner circle. "You know, I have no problem walking on stage at Madison Square Garden," she told Evans before diving into the wings. "But if I have to sing in front of, like, 15 people, I'm, like, sweating. So, this is one of those occasions. You know,...

Halsey‘s third album “Manic” was released on January 17, and it’s a creative leap for the 25-year-old singer-songwriter. At least, that’s according to critics.
Music journos have been weighing in since the collection was released, and it has a MetaCritic score of 85 based on eight reviews as of this writing: all of them positive, none of them negative. That’s a huge improvement from her previous LP, “Hopeless Fountain Kingdom” (2017), which scored 66 based on 10 reviews, half of which were mixed.

“Manic” is being described as a “raw autobiographical portrait,” a “chaotic amalgamation of self-analysis, rage, depression, ecstasy and growth.” Her singing has a “pleading tone” and “raspy edges,” and it’s “growing more expressive” over time. She demonstrates “lyricacl confidence,” resulting in “a major label pop album with real drama and humanity.”

The feature comes at the end of the song "3am." In the last part of the track is the beep of a voicemail. After the beep, a voice is heard freaking out over Halsey's "Without Me" (which directly follows "3am" on the album). As the voice is heard saying, "Your...
