I finally did it: I saw U2 in concert.
I may have waited too long to catch the band in its prime, but its 37 years of experience -- without a personnel change -- and undiluted passion have made it one of the biggest concert draws for decades now, even if recent albums have been uneven in inspiration.
The current tour, with Thursday night being the next-to-last of eight shows at Madison Square Garden, is promoting last year's Songs of Innocence, which I mostly like. It figured that the annoying album opener, "The Miracle of Joey Ramone" (I wrote that it "panders like a commercial") would also be the concert opener (unless you want to give that honor to Patti Smith's recording "People Have the Power," which at all those shows is the song the quartet has walked on to, coming through the audience and climbing onstage). When it comes to cultural impact, mega-sales and drama, this year’s Best Original Song category at the Academy Awards is going to have an awfully difficult time competing with last year’s category.
The 2013 winner, you might remember, was “Let It Go,” the anthem from “Frozen” that became a hit around the world and spawned a zillion amateur YouTube renditions.

U2 was forced to postpone their upcoming, weeklong residency on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon after Bono underwent surgery for a cycling injury.
"It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time - we're one man down," the band wrote on their website. "Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We're sure he'll make a full recovery soon, so we'll be back! Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding.

You too could sing along with U2 during the band's stint on The Tonight Show next week, with host Jimmy Fallon calling on fans to submit videos of themselves lip-syncing "The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)," from the band's latest record, Songs of Innocence. A compilation of those videos will then be incorporated into a live performance next week.
Fallon encouraged fans to get creative with their clips and said they can be uploaded either to YouTube with the title "Tonight Show U2 Lip Sync," or via the "Challenges" section on the The Tonight Show app.

Expectations play a large role in how we consume and react to cinema, particularly in the commercial realm. Genre formulas are so clearcut than any deviation is immediately noticeable. Some variation is required to prevent things from getting stale but anything too jarring and you run the risk of alienating your audience. The new Korean romcom (or is it?) My Ordinary Love Story takes such a risk as it veers way off course, but this is one gamble that pays off in spades. Eun-jin has been unlucky in love throughout her life and just as she is about to give up, she meets the bumbling but sweet Hyeon-suk. Things go well between them, but not long after their engagement she begins to suspect that he...

U2's Bono and The Edge are to collaborate with Once director John Carney on a new musical film.
Sing Street is based loosely on events from Carney's childhood, and will centre on a boy who uses music to help him cope with moving from a posh private school to the inner-city.
Bono and The Edge are slated to contribute songs and other musical elements to Sing Street, The Weinstein Company announced today (May 22).
Carney is writing the screenplay, in addition to serving as director.
U2 won a Golden Globe earlier in the year for writing the song 'Ordinary Love' for the Nelson Mandela biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
The Irish rock group have previously contributed music to the films Faraway, So Close!, Batman Forever and The Million Dollar Hotel.
U2 are also currently working on a new studio album, although a release date has not been set.

London, Mar.17: The Irish rock band U2 is reportedly on the verge of splitting after 38 years in the music business.
Sources told Daily Star that the pressure was really on Bono and the band after their recent song 'Ordinary Love' flopped in the global sales, and at this point there's every chance that the next tour will be the last one, Daily Star reported.
Bono, the vocalist of the band had earlier stated that the band was trying to figure out why anyone would want another U2 album as he admitted that band was living in fear of becoming irrelevant.
The source further stated that Bono is always getting offers to.

Los Angeles, March 8: Members of Irish rock band U2 won't release a new album until next year. They have scheduled new sessions with top producers Ryan Tedder and Paul Epworth to perfect tracks for it.
Although the band has performed live, appearing at the Oscars, the Golden Globes and on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon", as well as debuted two new tracks, "Ordinary Love" and "Invisible", they are still trying to perfect songs for their new album.
"It seems to be taking longer for them to finish an album as they get older, but the great thing about U2 is that the whole of a record is always better than the sum of its parts," contactmusic.com quoted a source as saying.
"That magic that the band always seems.

Despite the release of new track, “Invisible,” during the Super Bowl, it looks like U2 won’t have an album out in 2014, after all. At least that’s the word from Billboard, which reveals that the band is going back into the studio with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder and Paul Epworth, best known for his work with Adele. The band heavily campaigned for its Oscar-nominated song, “Ordinary Love” from “Mandela- Long Walk to Freedom,” and had previously noted that writing the song took them out of their studio groove for the album, their first since 2009’s “No Line On the Horizon.” (Trivia note: There were five years between “Line” and U2’s 2004 album “How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb,” the band’s longest stretch. However, if Billboard is right and we don’t see a new U2 until 2015, this will be the longest amount of time between sets for the...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

Hard-hitting slavery drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor becomes first film from black director to win top Academy award

12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.
Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. Pitt also takes a small but pivotal role as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.

Here’s the thing about a pleasant, but unsurprising Oscars: It’s still pleasant! Unlike any other trophy telecast, the Oscars can actually coast on prestige and glamor during the dull moments. Charlize Theron can’t quite read the teleprompter? Whatever! Ellen DeGeneres is handing out pizza to celebrities like an evil, gluten-based “Candy Man” for too long? Fine! It doesn’t matter when I’m screaming, “Flawless Queen” every time Cate Blanchett appears onscreen and “She’S Not Going To Be Ignored, Meryl” when Glenn Close comes into view. Which was a lot. My throat hurts.
We came into the 86th Academy Awards panicking about the chances of our favorites. “Is Jennifer Lawrence‘s squawky performance in that horrifying puppet show American Hustle capable of winning over Lupita Nyong’o?” I gasped to myself. “Is Cate really a sure thing when Judi, Sandra, Amy, and Meryl are also towering totems of likability?...

New York (AP) - With only a week to catch our breath after the lengthy cavalcade of Winter Olympics coverage, this year's Oscarcast may have seemed a refreshingly snug handout of awards. After all, it lasted only slightly more than three and a half hours, aired on ABC from a single venue (Hollywood's Dolby Theatre), and was emceed by the comfortably reliable Ellen DeGeneres.
By comparison to the Sochi games, Oscar went by in a flash.
Meanwhile, it had its high moments and a bare minimum of deficits, easily catalogued in cinematic terms: Great scene! Or ... best left on the cutting-room floor.

- Great Scene: The show's kickoff, which, unlike so many years before, wasn't an extravagant comedic film featuring the host with a bevy of stars, but instead, found DeGeneres arriving on stage to deliver her simple, but satisfyingly funny, monologue.
In gently wry style, she ribbed celebs in...

These days especially, what matters in a three-and-a-half hour awards show like Sunday's 86th annual Academy Awards is not who won or lost -- though the victories for Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" seemed to be part of history in the making -- but which moments were most likely to go viral.
In case you missed the Ellen DeGeneres-hosted extravaganza -- or nodded off at some point during its 212 minutes -- here are the best and worst of the evening's memorable moments.

After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. Here's to the soundtracks. The 2014 Academy Awards were as much about the songs that brought these films to life as they were about the coveted statuettes. With a handful of performances punctuating memorable moments - like Liza Minelli's blue streak on the red carpet, Lupita Nyong'o's emotional acceptance speech and Jared Leto's moving tribute to his mother - here's who else stole the show. Pharrell - who wore one of his signature hats to the show - kicked things off with his hit, "Happy." Next, Karen O and Ezra Koenig (lead singer of Vampire Weekend) performed "The Moon Song,...

As expected, “Frozen’s” “Let It Go” took home the Oscar for best original song, but who was the winner for best performance during the Academy Awards? We rate the four Oscar-nominated performances as well as the two extra appearances by Pink and Bette Midler. Pharrell Williams, “Happy,” “Despicable Me 2” (Written by Pharrell Williams): Yes, he brought the hat with him. Williams, whose new album comes out tomorrow, darted in-between Oscar statues giving the liveliest performance of the night. Jumping into the audience, he danced with Lupita Nyong’o, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams in the irrepressible tune. Very clean-cut dancers surrounded Williams during the bouncy number. Grade: A Karen O, “The Moon Song,” “Her” ( Written by Karen O and Spike Jonze): In a very stripped down, sweet performance, accompanied only by Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O delivered a subtle, understated...

The 2014 Oscar Awards have been handed out and it to no real surprise... there were few surprises as 12 Years a Slave took home Best Picture as well as Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley) while Gravity, unsurprisingly, ended up taking home the night's largest number of wins with seven, none bigger than a Best Director win for Alfonso Cuaron. In the acting categories the only category that seemed up for grabs was Supporting Actress, but as I said, that went to Lupita, which may have something to do with Jennifer Lawrence wearing red... I learned on E! that no one wearing red has ever won the Oscar. Yeah, that's hard-hitting journalism right there. Dallas Buyers Club co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Best Actor and Supporting Actor respectively while Cate Blanchett took home her second Oscar, winning Best Actress for Blue Jasmine. Disney's "Frozen" walked into the Oscars the favorite in its two categories, Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song, and it claimed both Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. In what was a notably thin year for animated features, the film was clearly the dominant force, critically acclaimed and loved by audiences the world over. It even became a member of the exclusive $1 billion club in global box office receipts just a day before the big show. It's a pretty important moment for the studio, really, as this is the first win for Walt Disney Animation in the 13-year history of the animated feature category. Meanwhile, Idina Menzel's rendition of "Let It Go" rounded out a pretty stellar line-up of Best Original Song performances throughout the evening, capped off by a win in the category. The song held off stiff competition from the likes of Pharrell Williams...

U2 have never met a big stage they couldn't hold and Sunday night's (March 2) Oscars were no exception. The legendary Irish rockers performed their Best Original Song nominated anthem "Ordinary Love" from "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" unplugged, but with an electric charge that that captivated the star-studded audience. Playing on a spare stage lit by six large spotlights, the band played an acoustic version of the tune, with singer Bono hitting the falsetto ...

Beloved Irish rockers U2 completed their hat trick of major media events, appearing onstage at the Oscars to perform their nominated song “Ordinary Love.” The song was written to honor Nelson Mandela, the subject of the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom — and an image of the late Mandela appeared onscreen at one point. Around the two-minute mark, Bono got down on his knees and thrust his arms in the air in a pose that vaguely suggested Willem Dafoe in Platoon. Watch the performance below:...

Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner co-star. Besides thanking those who worked on Dallas Buyers Club; his mother, "a high school dropout and a single mom" who "somehow … managed to make a better life for herself and her children"; Leto, apparently speaking for (many? some? a handful of?) other Oscar 2014 attendees, also remembered people’s protests / revolutions in the Ukraine and Venezuela: "I want to say we are here and as you struggle to … to make your dreams happen, to live the impossible … We’re thinking of you tonight."
