What's better than watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Watching the epic space adventure while in space yourself! It turns out that an upcoming feature onboard the International Space Station will be none other than the newest installment to the Star Wars franchise. Spaceflight reporter Robin Seemangal shared the news on Twitter Tuesday and Nasa confirmed it with Inverse. The lucky astronauts onboard the Iss often enjoy movies from a digital library including The Martian, Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey (and probably some non-space related ones, too). While it's unclear when the Iss will get access to the film, Nasa Public Affairs Officer Dan Huot said that Nasa "can confirm the crew...

As folks gather by the masses to watch Star Wars: The Last Jedi over the next couple weeks, only a select few will get the privilege of seeing it in space. It has been confirmed by Disney and Nasa that a screening of the film will be sent into space for astronauts to enjoy:
I received confirmation from Disney and Nasa sources that the crew aboard the International Space Station will be screening Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
More details soon.

I'm not exactly sure I'd want to watch a film that features ships exploding in space, but then again I would be pretty salty if I was missing out on a Star Wars film while I was in space so I'm sure there are plenty of people on board psyched about it. Maria Bamford, the star of perhaps Netflix’s most truly original comedy, went fully nude in the first episode of “Lady Dynamite,” just for funsies. “There are so many male nude scenes that I think are funny. I just — I’m older, I don’t give a shit,” she said, with a laugh, to IndieWire.
The scene features Bamford dodging attempts to pixelize her naughtiest bits, in an effort to (as one of her pet pugs explains in voice-over) celebrate “body positivity.” That’s an absurd sentence to write, out of context. But it fits perfectly with the mindset that drives “Lady Dynamite,” which features Bamford as a somewhat fictionalized version of herself, dealing with the pitfalls and pratfalls of the entertainment industry in a heightened reality where dogs can talk, the boundaries of space and time don’t matter, and, really, why shouldn’t a 40-something woman strut around naked?...

This is pretty impressive for a bunch of kids. Imagine walking through the woods one day and finding what looks like an old, abandoned space station just rusting away in the woods. Now imagine that it’s fully functioning and the interior looks just as impressive as the exterior. This cool-looking space fort was built by about 90 campers in the 10-18 year old range that attended Beam Camp, which is associated with Beam Center, a NYC non-profit program that is all about teaching kids how to collaborate and create something great, with guidance and leadership from their counselors of course.

Give thanks, TV viewers, that we’re coming up on a month that not only offers a handful of intriguing documentaries, the return of two breakout series from last year and a British sitcom about cancer starring Lizzy Caplan, but also the premieres of both S.W.A.T and S.M.I.L.F.! All this, plus an old-school horse opera and a two-part history lesson on five decades of Rolling Stone. Here's what you’ll be tuning into this November. (Our guide to the month's best streaming options will go up next week.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Almost hilariously terrible: absurd plot machinations, dubious politics, not a single character to care about. And it doesn’t even give good disaster porn. I’m “biast” (pro): big science fiction fan
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of what Hollywood often does with sci fi

Who was it who said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it”? Well, we showed that guy! Gerard Butler. Weather satellites. Reshoots. A camel. We take a look at Geostorm...
Your relationship with Geostorm may be best measured by where you stand on 1994’s Charlie Sheen skydiving movie, Terminal Velocity. Terminal Velocity, by many, was dismissed as a trashy, throwaway action movie. But I always thought it was an absolute hoot. It was never going to challenge the awards season, but as a piece of filmed entertainment, it’s become the kind of film that Hollywood’s all-but-forgotten how to make. The joyously daft action and/or effects movie that the 90s at one stage thrived on.
What a pleasure, then, to report that Geostorm captures that spirit. I'm not sure if that's by luck or design, either. Still, I happily confess it had me early on, with the idea that a raging weather movie was being crossed with a presidential assassination thriller. As it turns out...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
Last weekend saw the release of the latest Tom Cruise vehicle, “American Made,” and critics are raving that it’s better than “The Mummy!” In honor of this great achievement, we ask: What is Tom Cruise’s greatest performance?

The greatest Tom Cruise performance of all time happened on Oprah’s couch in 2005. But in the movies? “Magnolia.” It’s the best, but it’s also the “most” Cruise performance. His batshit insanity just barely holds together the fragile insecurity of the man beneath the horndog motivation speaker.

Pictures of the Earth from Space are fairly easy to find anymore, but there's just something about this video that left me in awe. It may the perspective of an astronaut filming from the window as he looks down and talks about all the places they're passing by...it almost doesn't feel real. Sitting here in front of my computer, it's hard to imagine staring at the Earth when 99.99% of us have never and may never get the opportunity. Anyway, you didn't come here to watch me begin an existential crisis, check out the awesome view of the Earth from the International Space Station below: ...

As many No Man's Sky fans (or non fans by now) will know, we have been treated to a special updated called Atlas Rising. Since then, we have had several more updates fixing bugs and problems encountered in the game ever since that update.
Here is some of my own gameplay showing some of the new features in the game, as well as showing off my base and freighter:
This video shows the game exactly after I started it up once the Atlas Rising and Update 1.34 were completed. Atlas Rising boasts some new missions, graphics, interfaces and discoveries. Here are some things I was really impressed, and upset, with.
Visual User Interfaces
First of all, all the user interfaces really look amazing. There are so many to choose between, such as the flight mode in your space ship with the new radar imagery and parking assists, to the Galaxy map...

Elon Musk has unveiled a photo giving us our first look at SpaceX's space suit! I've gotta say... I love the sleek cool design! It looks like it comes right out of sci-fi movie.
The suits will be worn by the Nasa astronauts who will pilot the SpaceX Dragon Capsule, which will be used to take astronauts to and from the International Space Station. We don't really have any details or specs on the suit yet, but Musk did include the following comment with the photo:
“Worth noting that this actually works (not a mockup). Already tested to double vacuum pressure. Was incredibly hard to balance esthetics and function. Easy to do either separately.”
The suit definitely has style. Check it out!

It's the must-see event of the year. Today, the continental U.S. will witness a total solar eclipse—the first since 1979. For those unable to see it in person, no fear: Time's editor at large Jeffrey Kluger is hosting a live-stream with spaceflight historian Amy Shira Teitel starting at 12 p.m. Et. Nasa is also sharing images captured before, during and after the eclipse, via 11 spacecraft, at least three Nasa aircraft, more than 50 high-altitude balloons and the astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Over the course of 100 minutes, 14 states across will experience more than two minutes of darkness in the middle of the day; a partial eclipse will be viewable across all of North...

Sweet Christmas, everyone – this year’s Awesome Con was busy as all get-out and chock-full of cool things to see and do, and con season is rushing by so fast that I’m just now getting to my recap! (We can also blame the con crud for this, alas. It’s been following me around for a solid month.) As always, there were way more activities than one mere mortal could get to. And on top of that, this was the first year where I really saw multiple events surrounding the con that were either not directly affiliated with the con but inspired by it, or connected to it but not part of the main con experience.
So let’s start there. First off, I was part of a pre-con round-table interview Awesome Con set up with the inestimable Stan Lee. Stan answered many great questions. He talked about what...

In honor of the first total solar eclipse visible within the United States in 99 years, Facebook and Nasa will host several streams for viewers who wish to experience the event from the comfort of their computers, smartphones, or smart TV sets.
Nasa will broadcast the eclipse on its Facebook page from unique vantage points coast-to-coast on Monday, with coverage beginning at noon Et. The eclipse itself is expected to begin at 1:15 pm Et and at roughly 4:15 pm -- with the totality, in which the sun is fully obscured by the moon, occurring at 2:45 pm and lasting for less than two minutes. Facebook will deploy a special notification within users’ News Feeds for access to the live broadcast. And Nasa's coverage will be available on the ground and in the sky -- including from the International Space Station -- with options for 4K resolution and 360-degree video.

Are there rules on how to make a space epic? If there are, Luc Besson has certainly never heard them because in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, he takes the genre upside down, gives it a shake and rattle, and delivers one of the most positively bonkers films of the year. Based on the long running Franco-Belgian comic book Valérian and Laureline, which served as inspiration for other Besson projects like The Fifth Element, the film follows Major Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Sergeant Laureline (Cara Delevingne), special agents of the World State Federation who enforce intergalactic safety, as they travel to a distant planet to retrieve a rare creature — perhaps the last of its kind in the universe — from the hands of toad-like aliens who run their business in a market straight out of Casablanca.

Did you see Life when it was released in cinemas back in March? I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t, as it dramatically flopped, pulling in a meagre $30 million domestic on a $58 million budget. At the time, the film was widely criticized as being a blatant Alien ripoff and, with Alien: Covenant on the way, audiences seem to have figured they may as well wait for the real deal.
Well, Alien: Covenant is now here and it’s good, but it’s not quite the return to form we all hoped it would be. Stars: Samantha Robinson, Gian Keys, Laura Waddell, Jared Sanford | Written and Directed by Anna Biller
If Viva was Anna Biller’s ode to 1970s sexploitation films, The Love Witch is the auteur’s loving – and really quite lovely – homage to the 1960s horror heyday of Hammer Films and Roger Corman. Funny, seductive, and in the end oddly moving, it may be the best indie horror movie since… well, since another indie horror movie with the words “The” and “Witch” in the title. And it couldn’t be more different.
Samantha Robinson plays Elaine, a recently-widowed witch who moves to California, into a grand old house owned by her fellow mystic, Barbara (Jennifer Ingrum). There she meets Trish (Laura Waddell), an interior decorator. The ladies chat about men, and it quickly becomes clear that their views sharply diverge on the role of women, and what the love of a man means.

After a tepid critical reaction (see our review here) and a mediocre opening weekend, don’t count on Life getting a sequel anytime soon. In some ways, the film’s mild failure is a shame – it’s increasingly rare to see original ideas getting the blockbuster treatment, yet perhaps Life‘s janky mashup of The Thing and Alien isn’t that original anyway. Regardless, screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have been discussing their ideas for a second outing.
As those who’ve seen it will know, Life does not exactly end happily. It’s rare to see a film conclude on such a mean hearted note, but you can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen once Calvin has outsmarted the hapless astronauts. Given how effortlessly it eradicated life aboard the International Space Station, you presume that its mere arrival is going to cause major problems on Earth.

Chicago – Combining the invasion elements of “Alien” with the life-raft-in-space morbidity of “Gravity,” the new film “Life” maintains a grip from the enlightened beginning to the twisted end. Mars is the origin, so the film joins “The Martian” and “The Space Between Us” in sourcing the red planet.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The idea, it seems, is to find the type of actors who can sell the story, and the cast of “Life” is up to the task. Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson are part of the crew that is experiencing the “and then there were none” scenario, as the life form from Mars is loose on their space station. This seemingly unstoppable force occurs through the decision making of exploration… are we willing to take the consequences of “discovering” life outside the earth? It all adds up to a well done thriller, which is more of a suspense movie – like...

*there are spoilers here. Daniel Espinosa's sci-fi thriller Life is not without a few dull moments. The idea of the crew of the International Space Station researching samples from the planet Mars is sound, and with a telling title which recalls Ridley Scott's Alien; the comparisons do not stop there. After a slow start, this film gets morbidly fascinating, and I was left looking for clues if a rumour created over at comicbook.com is true. Unless the creative team want to rewrite a lot about how the symbiote works, the answer is no. This movie is not a precursor to Sony's Venom movie which is currently in development. Without giving too much away, just what the team of scientists find show that the fourth planet away from the Sun is not a dead world. Although stripped of an atmosphere and it is a desert-like world, something can...

David Ellison first created Skydance Productions for his own 2005 directorial debut When All Else Fails, but Skydance Media really started making waves in 2010 when it teamed up with Paramount Pictures for the Coen Brothers Western True Grit.
It went on to become the highest grossing Western ever and cemented the relationship between Skydance Media with Paramount who teamed-up for World War Z, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and other franchises like Star Trek and 2014’s Terminator: Genisys. (Obviously, some of those movies did better than others.)
For his new science fiction movie Life, based on an idea that Ellison came up with, he’s teamed with Sony Pictures, bringing together a cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson as part of the crew of the International Space Station who must examine a sample of life that’s been brought back from Mars.

Space movies have a tried and true tradition in cinema. I don’t think I can remember a segment of the film world more contentious the space. And I really think that has to do with what we don’t know. As humans, anything we aren’t sure about is immediately scary to us. And I can see why space fits that definition. It’s a vast, endless vacuum of nothing that we can’t see 99 percent of.
And I think horror movies set in space are a particular subset that feeds on a primal fear we can’t quite control. And it’s also why it’s pretty easy to make a decent space movie and have it be scary. So it is even more uprising when a movie doesn’t live up to already low standard.

Space. “The final frontier.” Sprawling nothingness explored to death by superheroes, adventurers and aliens alike. The whole “spaceship disaster scenario” seems familiar by now, doesn’t it? Characters are confined inside cold, industrial coffins that repeat symbolically through modern science fiction. Gravity might take us outside, but the backdrops rarely differ. Infinite black vastness dotted with twinkling stars – like an unending echo chamber. It’s with this mentality that Life plays by Ridley Scott’s alien survival textbooks, as a thousand post-Alien thrillers have similarly attempted. In space, no one can hear you scream – but can they hear you “meh?”
Director Daniel Espinosa takes us aboard the International Space Station, where astronauts await research findings from Mars. The tiny cargo shuttle almost flies away due to its wonky trajectory, but Roy Adams (Ryan Reynolds) reels in the hurdling package. As much as it wants to be, the new deep-space thriller Life is no Alien. Then again, what is? What could be? When Ridley Scott directed his 1979 no one-can-hear-you-scream masterpiece, there were still rules to break and boundaries to push. He giddily broke and pushed all of them, combining what were dismissed as two distinct and disreputable gutter genres (science fiction and horror) and fusing them into one glorious chest-bursting hybrid. You could be intelligent and graphically gooey at the same time. Who knew? In fact, it was possible that by doing so you could even approach something like art.

Hollywood writing duos are a long-standing tradition that’s continued through the years and there have been even more recently, but Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have created a particularly creative knack for tackling genre and franchise.
I personally met the duo on the set of their 2009 movie Zombieland many years ago, and watched them taking on other big genre movies including G.I. Joe: Retaliation, before working with Ryan Reynolds to develop a Deadpool movie that was hugely popular with superhero fans.
Their new movie Life is an outer space thriller also starring their Deadpool collaborator Ryan Reynolds, along with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson as half the crew of the International Space Station, who have recovered a sample of life from the surface of Mars. It’s a single cell organism that’s been frozen, but when they try to revive it, it starts growing, becoming stronger and more violent towards its would-be captors.

‘Life’ Finds a Way to Deliver a Fun Thrill Ride Despite the Generic SetupA compelling cast, an intelligent enemy, and slick thrills make for an entertaining slice of sci-fi/horror.
As much as films like Apollo 13 and Hidden Figures want us to believe otherwise, space-set horror films have shown us again and again that astronauts really aren’t all that bright. How else to explain the endless display of scientists and space explorers who encounter a previously unknown alien life-form and against all common sense decide it’s probably something they should touch?
That’s the immediate hurdle the new film Life needs to overcome even before the the first frame appears, and while the moment in question is a definite stumbling block the movie still succeeds in becoming a highly entertaining and often suspenseful ride into darkness.

What does it say that most movies about making contact with an alien species inevitably devolve into a bloodbath? Is that mankind’s fear of the great unknown rearing its ugly head? Or, Arrival aside, is it just more fun (and profitable) when E.T. goes Ham? In the ruthless science-fiction thriller Life, a team of researchers aboard the International Space Station acquire definitive proof that we’re not alone in the universe: a carbon-based organism from Mars, small enough to fit into a petri dish. Unfortunately, and much to their surprise (though not to the audience’s), the little guy turns out to be something of a natural born killer. Life plays coy about this development for a while, going heavy on the oohs and the aahs and the proud video chats back to Earth; when the title arrives, more than a few minutes in, it’s to a...

If Hollywood’s revitalized interest in space — embodied by Gravity, The Martian, and Interstellar — has proven anything, it’s that the galaxy is terrifying enough without the presence of extraterrestrial life. As the horrors of eternal darkness, flying debris, spacesuit malfunctions, and grappling with the psychological effects of loneliness weigh on our protagonists, Life attempts to up the ante by adding to the equation a creature hell-bent on destroying every human in its path. Although wholly derivative of the sci-fi touchstones that came before it, Daniel Espinosa’s streamlined, down-and-dirty approach makes for a refreshingly self-contained survival thriller.
Beginning with an extended, zero-gravity-replicating single take that hovers through the International Space Station, we’re introduced to the crew (made up of Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, and Olga Dihovichnaya), who have found the first proof of life beyond Earth. There will always be films that exist as a way of paying tribute to a classic that’s come before it. In the next few days, a new one is hitting screens. On Friday, Life opens and it hopes to be a new version to an old hit. The cast here though is impeccable, led by the A-list team of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds. They’re two of the biggest and brightest stars in Hollywood. Working off of a script by the suddenly hot screenwriting duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are fresh off of a Writers Guild of America nomination for Deadpool. This is what Reese and Wernick have been up to since, with Reynolds along for the ride as well. The movie is a science fiction horror outing in the tradition of Alien. Here, we follow a team of a half dozen scientists working aboard the International Space Station.
