Hack off your enemy's limb... then thrash him with it!
geraintwd30 March 2005
Fantasy role-playing game with all the traditional elements - orcs, trolls, golems, demons, experience points, health potions... and BIG swords. 3D 3rd-person fantasy adventure that lets you play as one of 4 characters (Knight, Barbarian, Dwarf or Amazon) out to save the world from the forces of Chaos.

Wield pretty much anything as a weapon - even chop off your opponent's limbs and beat him with them! Awesome special attacks and combo moves, decapitations, plenty of blood and gore. One of the most underrated games I've ever played.

"Severance - Blade of Darkness" as it's known in some territories, was made by the (now defunct) Spanish developers Rebel Act Studios and published by Codemasters. Apart from a few bugs, the game is amazing, especially its dynamic lighting and real-time reflections that are quite impressive considering its age.

Where this game really shines is the combat. Incredibly fluid moves, both offensive and defensive, with additional abilities unlocked with each experience level that you advance (experience is gained by killing enemies). Some of the weapons are really impressive and their special attacks are absolutely devastating.

This game makes for a refreshing change from all the first person shooters than seem to dominate the market, it's just a shame that it's so criminally underrated.

Medieval and horrific beautiful

This games leaves me flabbergasted throughout the complete play-through.

I've played this game out several times. As the Knight, as the Barbarian and as the Amazon. I didn't completely played it out as the Dwarf yet, but maybe in the future.

This can be only described as a hack em-up game. Swords, axes, war-hammers, are the most used weapons. The only shooting weapon is a bow, which is needed to solve some of the puzzles.

Throughout the game you earn experience by fighting, and reaching a certain level of points gives you the ability to use a weapon in a more distinctive and destructive way. This also means that the controls for a certain fighting-technique with a certain weapon can be hard to master, but once you master it, the reward is very satisfying.

The place has many weapons and sceneries. From simple swords to a blood-sword, a simple Axe to a poisoned Axe etc.. According the character some weapons are better suited to you. Swords and shields for the Knight, double handed swords for the Barbarian, axes for the Dwarf, and spears for the Amazon. Sceneries vary from dungeons, castles, snowy landscapes, to desert hills. Incredible breathtaking landscapes, even for a game of this age. The CGI for the characters is quite good and in a whole they are quite intelligent. They work together to defeat you, and will take cover for your attacks. There are plenty characters here, from the simple orc to the intelligent end-bosses, who can be quite difficult to beat.

When you have almost killed one of your adversaries, the last hit and where it is will decide what limb will come off, being it, the head, the legs, the arm or his whole rump. The blood will squirt out in a realistic way. Skeletons or zombies will more or less fall in to dust. The realism of the kills is exaggerating good. There are also some puzzles to solve. Not extremely difficult, but nonetheless you have to solve them to be able to get the sword for finishing the game.

The music is fantastically good, and is made to make the scenes more tensioned. When the music swells or changes pace, you just know something is going to happen. All in all, this is a great game, which leaves you with the taste to play it over again after you have finished it. I would give this game 11 points if it was possible, that's how good I think it is.

My favorite game
AdiVrj12 March 2008
Blade of Darkness is one of those games that you never forget. It is my favorite game of all time, and i've played quite a lot of games, almost any type. I must say (not to brag or something) that i finished the game at least seven times with the barbarian, about five or six with the knight and about four or five times with the amazon as well as the dwarf. The game is astonishing, and it looks great even in 2008 after i've played call of duty 4, or doom 3, half life 2, hit-man blood money, etc. You have four characters to chose from, every single one of them with his own moves and weapon techniques. The number of weapons that you encounter is very large so you have to chose carefully weapons from your f1 list of weapons in which the character you have chosen specializes(they are quite a lot, don't worry). Each weapon has a power strike that will take a lot of damage if executed(as soon as you master how to use the power strikes of your weapons the game becomes a lot easier and more interesting, the combination for each power strike is on the f1 list).

What most players don't know is that you have to uncover six tablets with some inscriptions on them(a big sign dominating the rest of the writing) so that you can use properly the sword of Ianna, the most powerful weapon of all which any of the characters can use in combat and even use it's power, it's ultimate strike which is very impressive, powerful and different from those of your usual weapons(i'm not going to give more details to spoil your surprise). I repeat in order to properly use the sword of Ianna and to gain another stage(your last enemy is not Dal'Gurak - for those who have played the whole game) you must collect all of the six tablets which are very well hidden throughout the stages, you have to look for clues, signs, loose walls etc. in order to find them. Beware though, before every one of those tablets you will encounter traps.

There are many types of enemies that you will encounter, some possessing special powers, some having certain weaknesses that you must observe and exploit in order to achieve victory. The battles are extremely engaging, realistic and bloody, you can actually cut one of your enemy's hands, or legs and pick it up in order to throw it or fight with it(not recommended). Some of your enemies will actually fight amongst them if they hit one and other by mistake. Another piece of advice that i can give you, and probably the most important is to always use "lock on" key in a fight as soon as you spot your enemy, it practically gives you control of the battle. The maps are beautiful, various, quite detailed and they never get boring.

If you take notice at my advices the game will become a lot easier and pleasant, otherwise you will find it to difficult and probably quit playing after two or three maps (like some friends of mine). Blade of darkness is a game that has everything, scary scenes, superb maps, lots of monsters and battles that you won't forget and dream about at night. If you haven't played it yet make sure you give it a try because it won't disappoint you.
