This show was introduced along with Crossroads (2001) as part of a new teatime soap lineup on ITV in early 2001. Both shows ended up being axed.
Kylie Minogue sang the theme song.
The first character on screen is Jane Harper, played by Georgina Walker. The actress briefly starred in the Crossroads revamp as Rio Brooke.
Shane Richie and Bradley Walsh - both former comedians best known for hosting quiz shows (Richie for Lucky Numbers, Walsh for Wheel of Fortune) - scored their first acting roles on Night and Day, playing brothers Danny and Eddie Dexter. Both went on to play much higher profile soap roles - Richie as Alfie Moon in EastEnders (1985) from 2002, and Walsh as Danny Baldwin in Coronation Street (1960) from 2004 - 2006. Due to the gap between filming and transmission for Night and Day, Richie had already appeared on screen in EastEnders, with Alfie erroneously described as his first soap role. Walsh's arrival in Coronation Street received similar publicity, with ITV largely ignoring his role in Night and Day.
With the show having been suddenly relegated to a late night slot in March 2002, filming was suspended indefinitely that May, with a large backlog of episodes already scheduled to air. When the show was finally officially axed, several more episodes were filmed to give it a proper ending, but due to the gap, several characters were largely absent for most of that time due to the actors having other commitments, and simply disappeared. However, all the series regulars featured at least once in or before the series finale.
