The flow of time is perceived as being progressive and linear in nature, which contributes to our understanding of concepts such as ‘Butterfly Effect,’ ‘Grandfather Paradox,’ ‘Bootstrap Paradox,’ etc., where temporal changes are theorized to have a significant impact. But what if time, as we know it, doesn’t remain bound by the constraints of a fixed direction and rather starts acting as a catalyst, connecting various points across the past, present, and future in a way that ensures the inevitability of the continuation of time? As the second season of Amazon Studios’ sci-fi western thriller Outer Range reveals itself with all its eccentric zaniness and complexities, this particular version of time gains narrative focus, often acting like a distinctive character in its own right.
If the first season of the series seemed confusing and bonkers to the viewers, the second season of Outer Range is definitely going to knock them senseless,...

The movie’s pacing plays a major part in its eventual perception by the audience. It gives the filmmakers the freedom of choice whether to stick to the usual narration or to speed up or, on the contrary, slow down the plot progression to create a special impression and to make their movies memorable.
We can recall the fast-paced Trainspotting (1996) or Fight Club (1999), with both of them becoming cultish features, definitive for the whole generation. However, there is a lesser-known 1990’s movie that is also quick to start and to throw a viewer into the heat of its events, appearing to be a brilliant must-watch.
Its plot revolves around the young Lola, who receives a devastating phone call from her boyfriend Manni. It turns out that he lost 100,000 Deutschmarks that he was sent to bring to his gangster boss, and he begs Lola to somehow find the necessary amount of...

“It hurts to turn the radio on
Stamina’s gone
My spirit is weak
Because every time I start to move on
Keep hearing that song
I’m brought to my knees”
-“Now or Never Now” by Metric
Although not selected for the phenomenal soundtrack for Ned Benson’s follow-up to his similarly themed The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Metric’s “Now or Never Now” nearly sums up the plot of his oft-sublime The Greatest Hits. Harriet (Lucy Boynton), a librarian mourning the loss of her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet), is triggered by songs that marked their relationship. An obsessive cataloger (a great quality for a librarian), she has mapped-out the trajectory of their relationships in songs and memorabilia that she accesses in a controlled environment. For the rest of her life there are noise-canceling headphones that she uses to block out songs that send her back into the past.

From the infamous grandfather paradox to accidentally creating a timeline where Ned Flanders rules the world, there’s an element of existential horror to every single time travel story. However, it seems that most filmmakers prefer to focus on the exciting adventure aspects of these mind-bending yarns, as very few films choose to explore the terrifying personal ramifications of going back in time to mess with events in your own life.
Obviously, there are several exceptions to this “rule,” and one of the most entertaining just happens to be Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber’s sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect, an under-appreciated relic of the 2000s that I think has aged into a much better movie than most folks give it credit for. I’ve watched enough Doctor Who to know time is a complicated construct with rules fluctuating from one interpretation to the next. Thankfully, Rhys Darby’s Casper has time travel all figured out in Relax, I’m From the Future, a new time-traveling comedy that finally breaks the multiversal merry-go-round we’ve been riding for the past few years. In today’s exclusive Relax, I’m From the Future clip, Casper dismisses the Butterfly Effect and misinformation about multiple realities.
The scene finds Casper and Holly (Gabrielle Graham) discussing multiversal misnomers in a dimly lit diner over piping hot mugs of jitter juice. Casper explains how there’s only one reality, and that time is more like a mushy blob than anything we’ve seen in movies. Doc Brown lied to us, folks! Oh, the humanity! While branching paths in the timeline exist, they eventually converge in the same direction, leading toward a pre-determined future.

Time-travel tales always raise logical questions about inconsistencies and effects. One of the tropes is that everything will go kablooey if your time-traveling self meets the prior one. Another is the warning to minimize interactions with those of yore to avoid collateral influences that will change their future and your present, as in the “Butterfly Effect.” Generally, films using this premise minimize our mental gymnastics by filling the screen with so much action that we don’t have time to think about the science what-ifs. The Terminator franchise exemplifies the distraction factor. The title’s definition is of internal contradictions or a logical impasse.
Aporia tries a different approach to avoid the first problem in this drama. A guy named Jabir (Payman Maadi) builds a time machine that’s not strong enough to send a person...

You have to hand it to Atom Egoyan: no matter how many flops he’s accrued, he won’t chase trends. While his new film Seven Veils positions itself in the high-definition now––family zoom calls, iPhone-captured showbiz misconduct, or the most disingenuous line-delivery of the word “podcast” ever––the Canadian director’s latest feels like his millionth variation on “trauma mediated through a low-res video camera.”
Though not so much another of his small-scale thrillers as it is Hitchcock’s Marnie meets Tár, an odyssey through the power dynamics of a hoity-toity creative world colliding with sexual trauma. Made concurrently with Egoyan’s own stint staging the opera Salome in Toronto this past winter, the film is nothing if not interesting for being an example of a director racing to put together a movie that grafts his usual preoccupations onto a quickly available business opportunity.

It’s become increasingly common to lend genre films some semblance of emotional depth by having their protagonists burdened from the start with profound grief or loss. That is especially the case with “Aporia,” producer Jared Moshe’s third feature as writer-director. Its variation on a particular kind of fantasy premise (often involving time travel) underlines the familiar wisdom of “Be careful what you wish for,” as the ability to alter tragic past events only ends up complicating the present for our main characters.

The hypothetical concept of traveling back and forth in time has always been fascinating to us and has existed in mythologies across the world long before the advent of sci-fi literature. Later, the prospect of not being shackled to our present and learning about the past and future by bypassing the natural flow of time has intrigued many writers and physicists. In order to rationalize its possibilities and conceptualize its ramifications, the efforts of curious minds led to the advent of a number of theories like general relativity, special relativity, the grandfather paradox, quantum entanglement, time dilation, suspended animation, and wormholes, most of which, at this point, have been liberally used in literary endeavors.
Even though most of these aforementioned concepts have been overused in mainstream media, now and then, some of the time-travel-oriented ventures try to put their own unique spin on them in order to stand out. Therefore,...

Exclusive: Carol Howe, a high-society debutante who joined the neo-Nazi movement responsible for the Oklahoma City bombings in 1995 and then became a government informant, is the subject of a new podcast from Jon Ronson.
Ronson, a journalist and filmmaker who wrote The Men Who Stare At Goats, which was turned into the George Clooney-fronted movie, has created The Debutante for Audible.
The Amazon-owned audio platform will launch the series on April 13.
It uses rare court tapes, diary entries, undercover Atf surveillance audio, and interviews, to explore the mystery of Howe, a charismatic, wealthy former debutante turned white supremacist spokeswoman turned undercover informant.
In 1995, Carol was spying on Oklahoma’s neo-Nazis for the government just when Timothy McVeigh, inspired by what happened at Waco, blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people.

Ashton Kutcher is shooting for a revival, it seems, reprising his role as Kelso for guest spots on That ‘90s Show and headlining his first movie in a decade. Out of the spotlight or under criticism, Kutcher maintains that his mantra is, “Invest in enduring happiness.”
Ashton Kutcher became an easy target as a doofy leading man in buddy comedies like Dude, Where’s My Car? and a series of rom-coms like Just Married (alongside Brittany Murphy), No Strings Attached (alongside Natalie Portman) and Valentine’s Day (alongside seemingly everybody). Even with dramatic turns, as in 2004’s The Butterfly Effect and 2013 biopic Jobs, Kutcher hasn’t exactly had a lot of praise thrown his way. Still, building off of his mantra and previous words of hope, it’s clear the actor is more of an inspiration that many might give him credit for.

Somewhat surprisingly, Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher had never worked together before Netflix’s new rom-com “Your Place or Mine.”
“I had always wanted to make a romantic comedy with Reese,” Kutcher tells Variety over Zoom. “Like, always.”
Though both are icons of the genre who rose to fame in the early 2000s — Witherspoon captured hearts in “Legally Blonde” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” while Kutcher made audiences swoon in “Just Married” and “No Strings Attached” — the stars just didn’t align for them, until now.
In fact, Witherspoon and Kutcher had only really met one time before, at a party decades ago — in a meet cute that could’ve been scripted for one of their movies — though they have different stories of how it went down.
“He was carrying a little cooler,” Witherspoon recalls. “I was like, ‘Hey, what’s in the cooler, cooler guy?’ It was Red Bull. He...

Ashton Kutcher has revealed why he was angry after his ex-wife Demi Moore released her memoir.
The actor, who is now married to Mila Kunis, said he was frustrated with the timing of the book.
This was due to the fact he had “finally gotten to a place where the press had really laid off me and Mila and my life and my family”.
Moore released Inside Out in September 2019.
In it, she shared personal stories about her relationship with the actor, which started when he was 25. Moore was in her 40s at the time.
“I was f***ing pissed,” Butterfly Effect actor Kutcher said of the book in a new interview with Esquire.
He added that “the next day”, following its release, members of the media “were at my kids’ school”.
Despite his anger at the time, he maintains that he has no “hard feelings” for Moore, whom he...

Forget flux capacitors and sports almanacs. Where these underrated time travel movies are going, you don't need mainstream references. This year-hopping corner of cinema may be predominantly dominated by Marty and the Doc's souped-up DeLorean and emotionless machines sent back in time to kill us, but take a deeper look and you'll find a range of stories that take time travel to some pretty unexpected places.
If we were to have our way, this list wouldn't be quite as brief. After all, with the entire space-time continuum at their fingertips, you'd think filmmakers would've put a little more effort into mining time travel for the full mind-bending potential the genre contains. However, as it stands, truly left-field adventures can often seem few and far between.
That said, we're lucky to have a handful of movies that use time and space as a jumping-off point to tell tales that are wild,...

Ashton Kutcher has discussed Mila Kunis’ feelings about his growing a mustache. Pic credit: ©Imagecollect.com/Carrie-nelson
Ashton Kutcher has revealed just how wife Mila Kunis felt about his growing a mustache to play a character in his new movie, Vengence.
In the film, 44-year-old Kutcher stars in Bj Novak’s directorial debut, Vengeance, as a rural Texas-based music producer called Quentin Sellers.
The character comes adorned with a large cowboy hat and a mustache, which is a highly unusual look for the ordinarily clean-shaven Kutcher.
The Dude Where’s My Car? actor appeared this week on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where guest host, David Alan Grier, wanted to know how Kutcher’s wife, fellow actor Kunis, felt about the new facial hair.
Kutcher joked that because he and Kunis have been together for seven years, the Black Swan actor actually thought he looked like a whole new guy.

Fetty Wap was arrested in New Jersey for bail violations after he reportedly flashed a gun and threatened to kill an unnamed caller on FaceTime. His attorney argued that the caller was entrapping the rapper, whose full name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, and manipulated him by posting a photo of his deceased daughter online.
He was indicted in the Eastern District of New York and is in particularly hot water because he is out on a 50,000 bond for drug trafficking charges from October 2021. Maxwell pled not guilty and was granted a pre-trial release in November on the condition he does not violate any laws or possess a firearm.
Court docs reportedly say that the state obtained footage of the video call, which took place on December 11, 2021. Fetty Wap allegedly said he would kill the caller, referred to as John Doe and flashed a gun on the screen. Since this...

Ah, good ol' causality. There's nothing better to whet a Trekkie's appetite for a brainy, overthought conversation about rerum natura than a story about how a small change in a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state. Or, to put it in other words, that Butterfly Effect sure is fun to talk about, eh, fellow nerd? Pass the mead.
"Star Trek" frequently revisits stories with themes of causality, determination, and fate (or lack thereof). Perhaps the best known among them, at least to a newer audience, might be the alternate Kelvin timeline created for the 2009 J.J. Abrams film, wherein a time travel...

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

An It drone’s daily grind meshes with his druggie high-school past in a Canadian brain-teaser that is somewhere between schlock and genius

This Van Helsing article contains major spoilers for the season 5 premiere.
From the dynamically retooled opening title sequence to the Jack-centric Transylvania storyline, it takes only moments to recognize that Van Helsing’s fifth and final season promises to take fans on a wild ride as it brings to a close its delightfully circuitous tale of horror’s most iconic vampire hunting family. Season premiere “Past Tense” doesn’t represent the first time the Van Helsing family story finds itself in the past, but there seems to be a more concerted effort this time to employ traditional time travel elements as the unanswered questions mount.
It’s been sixteen months since the season four finale, but the head of the Van Helsing clan remains noticeably absent from the story even though her imprint is unmistakable. Fans of the series understand Kelly Overton’s (Vanessa Van Helsing) pregnancy last season limited her participation,...

In TheWrap’s exclusive clip from tonight’s episode of the ninth and final season of the Fox sitcom, titled “Butterfly Effect,” Mike (Tim Allen) and Vanessa (Nancy Travis) are totally wiped while taking care of Sarah. Just after getting the little one to sleep, they get a text from Mandy (Molly McCook) and Kyle (Christoph Sanders), who have been busy with their estate-planning lawyer and have come up with “the perfect couple” to be Sarah’s guardians.

And while some films fizzle at the box office despite their festival hype, many more manage to sustain that buzz all the way until Oscar season. Here’s a few that made a splash at both Park City and for wide audiences. All box office figures are domestic numbers.
