First of all, I just have to say how much I love Finn Wolfhard's name. It's pretty badass. The star of Stranger Things and It is riding high off the success of these projects and now he's landed another lead role in a film called Dog Days.
If you're a dog fan, then you'll probably be into it. The story follows "a group of interconnected humans brought together by their canine counterparts as each faces hardships in life with their trusty pets at their side."
According to Deadline, Wolfhard will play a character named Tyler, who is described as "an altruistic and thoughtful pizza delivery boy."
Wolfhard is such a talented young actor and I think he's got a solid successful acting career ahead of him. He was great in It! Hopefully, he continues to pick good prohjects to be a part of. The actor will join the previously...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, and to paraphrase those renowned seventies scholars the Brady Bunch, “When it’s time to change then it’s time to change.”
While I’ve tried my hardest to slowly sneak those changes in, it’s gotten to the point where we’ll need to do something more drastic if the few of you reading the Weekend Warrior on a weekly basis actually want it to remain coming to you on a weekly basis. Because of that, we’re going to try something different by not throwing in as much independent limited releases for those checking the column out, and making the column a little more focused at least for the time being. (I’m probably going to move reviews for my Top Picks over to my blog, which is easy enough to...

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul”: Yup, the experience of watching this movie is right there in the title. Unconscionably overlong while offensively appealing to the lowest common denominator of filmgoers, this film would appear to lack a single reason to exist. It’s been five years since the “Diary” trilogy came to a close with “Dog Days” — a touching finale of a franchise written by the versatile Maya Forbes (“Infinitely Polar Bear,” “Monsters vs. Aliens”). The book had seemed to be literally closed on this one. And for good reason. Compelling artistry always knows where (and when) to.

After a five-year break, the Heffley family is back in action — although with a completely different cast playing them — in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, the fourth feature taken from Jeff Kinney’s highly relatable series of cartoon novels chronicling the life of a hapless middle schooler.
The hiatus after 2012’s Dog Days effectively aged out original lead Zachary Gordon (now 19), as well as his big brother/tormentor played by Devon Bostick (now 25), and while they were cleaning house, the producers also sent original parents Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris packing. As the ice flows thaw in the 24-hour daylight of a northern Norwegian summer, so too does the relationship of a father and son in Thomas Arslan’s Bright Nights, a consciously meditative but rather straightforward three-act road movie that takes just the bare minimum of plot points along for the ride. Combining an ambient use of imagery and music with a simple and sparse approach to dialogue, Arslan’s seventh feature as director might remind the viewer of the work of a small group of American independent filmmakers who broke out in the mid-to-late 2000s who were, at the time, collectively referred to as the neo-neo-realists by New York Times critic A.O. Scott. Indeed, you can see much of the work of Ramin Bahrani and Kelly Reichardt on display here, though, crucially, not their most profound gift as filmmakers: being able to divulge a great deal about a character...

The opera Dog Days opens with a family, “not unlike your own, sit[ting] in a house, watching a TV that isn’t on.” Now, I don’t know your family — mine does not include two perpetually stoned, semi-verbal, shirtless teenage brothers sprawled on a broken couch in the basement; a younger sister who talks to a man dressed as a dog; a raging, defeated father who’s quick to grab his rifle; or a mother who dishes out a steady diet of pickled carrots and dandelions from the yard. I suppose it could, though, which is precisely the point: We’re all just one tiny apocalypse from a state of savage survival. With a blunt, merciless libretto by Royce Vavrek and wheeling, nimble music by David T. Little, Dog Days portrays an American family brutalized by war, and the result is by turns intolerable and superb. It’s a deeply claustrophobic drama.

Dungeons, Nazis and Latex Babies: Seidl Puts Modern Cave Dwellers on Display
Paradise trilogy helmer Ulrich Seidl returns to docu form in what could easily be called a non commentary, no narrative, strictly observational look into an underground assortment of weird, carnie-type Austrian folk and the horrors they keep in their basements. Distinctive in its revelations about its subjects and steering clear of the notorious imprisonment cases that shocked Austrians and the world alike, In The Basement is an oddball entry, yet strangely alluring to be watched in awe, shock or marvelment. Why the helmer decided to feature these people is anyone’s guess.
First there’s the tuba player who reveals his massive collection of Nazi memorabilia and still refers to the police as ‘the Gestapo’. His brass band mates gather in his swastika-emblazoned basement to drink and discuss Hitler. Then there’s the woman who keeps a large doll collection in a cupboard,...

Originally premiering at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay and a Jury Prize, Dietrich Bruggemann’s Stations of the Cross is one of the more underrated foreign theatrical releases of 2015. Receiving a paltry two week theatrical run in one theater at the end of July, the title didn’t find much of an audience, pulling in about fifteen hundred dollars. Though championed by director Paul Schrader, the title receives an equally demure DVD release and it will depend on word of mouth to direct more energy towards the complex drama.

It all started with Exposed. I’m not sure what brought this 1971 Swedish sexploitation film to the suggestion portion of my Netflix account (presumably the roster of Jess Franco films recently added), but after reading the description, I figured it was worth a shot: “A pretty young teen finds her innocence lost when an unguarded night of revelry yields shameful secrets, and a stack of nude pictures that could ruin her life. But to get her hands on the negatives, she’ll have to expose herself even further.” That is indeed the basic plot of the film, which plays out exactly as one would expect for such fare. But what was unexpected while watching Exposed (also known as the much less enticing Diary of a Rape), was the 21-year-old star of the film. Her name is Christina Lindberg.

The Road to Hell: Brueggemann’s Apprehensive Examination of Blind Faith
Premiering at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival, where it snagged the Ecumenical Jury Prize as well as Best Script, Stations of the Cross is Daniel Brueggemann’s fourth film, an icy depiction of faith-based agonizing. In the fine tradition of Ulrich Seidl’s dark tragicomedies dealing with religious fanaticism, the German filmmaker concocts a formidable denunciation of such archaic and ultimately dangerous belief systems, made all the more surprising considering the director’s general penchant for comedy in previous features. Named for the Via Crucis, Latin for the series of fourteen images of Jesus Christ on day of his crucifixion, the film is divided into the same number of chapters charting its protagonists ‘sublime’ sacrificial journey.

The doe-eyed , baby-faced Swedish actress Christina Lindberg is best known for starring as Frigga in the 1974 rape and revenge classic Thriller, A Cruel Picture, which was released in the U.S. under the title They Call Her One Eye. Born in 1950, the voluptuous Ms Lindberg was an incredibly popular nude model in men’s magazines before beginning her movie career, which lasted from about 1970 to 1975. Her debut was the 1971 hit Maid In Sweden followed by more successful “soft-core” sex dramas such as Anita The Swedish Nymph, Exposed, Campus Swingers, Swedish Wildcats, Young Playthings and a dozen or so more. She went to Japan in 1973 and co-starred in Sex And Fury and Sex In Japan. Otherwise all of her movies were made in Sweden where she has lived her entire life. Christina refused to act in the hardcore sex films that began to dominate the industry by the mid-1970’s and...

Cold Cuts: Östlund Examines Behavior Unawares in Astute Sophomore Feature
While Ruben Östlund’s 2004 feature debut The Guitar Mongoloid first played with examinations of human behaviors, the director would further hone this angle more succinctly with his 2008 sophomore film, Involuntary. Premiering in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, it would march forward through a resiliently delayed festival circuit before last reaching theatrical release in the UK (and never awarded Us distribution). Again shuffling through various characters free of any discernable narrative, Östlund focuses on more uncomfortable behavioral patterns, perhaps more slightly defined by humans left victim to the consequences of their inability to help themselves or a dogged insistence on ignoring clearly defined social mores.
Earlier comparisons of Östlund to titles from Roy Andersson like You, the Living (2007) and Songs from the Second Floor (2002) seem more justified with the dark streaks of humor laced throughout Involuntary. But he’s also reminiscent...

Directors are among the high-profile international guests at this year’s festival.
Directors Spike Jonze, Park Chan-wook, Ulrich Seidl, Chantal Akerman and actress Martina Gedeck are among the high-profile international guests due to attend the Jerusalem Film Festival.
The festival said in statement: “Despite the security situation, more than 100 distinguished international guests are on their way to Jerusalem…The Festival’s international guests have expressed their support of the non-cancellation of the Festival and are due to arrive in Jerusalem in the coming days.”
Jonze, who recently won an Academy Award for best original screenplay for his sci-fi romance Her, will give a masterclass following a screening of his Oscar-nominated fantasy comedy Being John Malkovich — which marks its 15th anniversary this year.

Good grief, are they just going to kill everyone?! With the chief goal of the final season of True Blood clearly being to leave as few characters alive to see the cast party as possible (fewer drink tickets!), this week’s episode tidily dispatched with a central castmember, a longtime recurring character, and about a dozen others. Plus it featured Eric in a fabulous James Woods wig circa 1986. Let’s dig in!
We start the episode in an ashram in Los Angeles, where hotties are doing yoga. One of them turns out to be Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp). Ohhhh boy.
Over in France, Pam (Kristin Bauer Van Straten) asks Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) how long he’s been sick. He says a month. Pam says she felt Tara meet the true death, so I guess that confirms it once and for all. Eric says that he has finally given up, mostly because of Sylvie.

After 75,000 auditions, hundreds of Golden Tickets and countless performances, it came down to two - Caleb Johnson vs. Jena Irene - and a single song on Tuesday's American Idol. It used to be that summer was a desolate wasteland, at least when it came to original television. The networks, like teachers, pretty much took the season off and cable was still in its infancy, struggling to find a way to quench that particular thirst. But these days, summer is just as viable for original programming as the fall and midseason, and this year is no different.
We've decided to run down the biggest premieres from the hottest networks (in alphabetical order), making sure to note the starriest, sexiest, most interesting new and returning programs for you to watch at the end of a long, hot summer day. It's enough to make you wonder how anyone ever survived the summer without shows of this caliber popping up. Dog days, indeed.

Don’t send out a search party for the nervous teenage girl who started giggling when Cee Lo and Blake Shelton turned around during The Voice‘s Season 5 Blind Auditions. Caroline Pennell says that person is gone forever.
“It’s crazy, the transition from being on that stage and having it seem like such an incredible, unreal thing to having it feel normal,” says Pennell, explaining her inner transformation over the last few months — a transformation that carried her all the way to a Top 8 finish. “That’s my normal now, and it’ll always be normal, and having that newfound confidence is so valuable.

Just like the holidays, The Voice finals are creeping up on us. After Tuesday’s eliminations episode, only six singers are left to duke it out next week. We caught up with one of the two eliminated artists from the top eight, Caroline Pennell, the 17-year-old high school senior whose honeysuckle-sweet voice charmed America and her colorful coach Cee Lo Green. She began the competition as a shy singer, seemingly unaware of her talent. But after making it to the top eight, which isn’t any easy task, Pennell didn’t leave empty-handed, “I think a visible change would probably be just my comfort level,...

The Voice is like a snow globe this season – it loves to be shaken up. And last night's performance show lived by that philosophy, as the artists and coaches once again focused on making risky choices. While it paid off for some, others – including one-time frontrunners – might find themselves in trouble, especially because it's about that time in the season when "shocking" eliminations start happening.

The Voice is not the easiest show to recap for a fella like myself, who’s as cozy with snark and bitchery as a Kardashian is with secretly texting her exact whereabouts to the paparazzi. So on what am I supposed to hang my hat now that Season 5 is down to eight vocalists with enough combined talent to fill up an entire major label roster?
Oh sure, I can always find humor in Carson Daly’s attempts to position himself as Coach No. 5 — how I wish I could’ve been in the Sprint Skybox and shouted “Objection! Leading the witness!

In comparison to the last artist I wrote about – Lana Del Rey – Florence Welch isn’t dismissed as a manufactured act. However, I still don’t think that she is taken as remotely seriously as she deserves to be, she is one of our most weirdly wonderful musical talents but sometimes it’s easy to forget that.
Collaborating with the likes of Dizzy Rascal and Calvin Harris has been viewed in certain quarters with some cynicism, but I don’t think she’s remotely calculated, she just enjoys making music with artists she likes. I genuinely believe Florence is the weirdest star the UK has seen since Morrissey. But let’s start at the beginning.
The first time I encountered Florence the story I read was simple, here’s a new artist that we should all adore – literate, sassy, ethereal and classic. It was at a time when we needed...

We finally have some news on the long-gestating adaptation of Eidos Interactive’s Kane & Lynch video game series. Though the project was first announced several years ago, numerous delays have held it back from entering production.
If I recall correctly, Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx were originally attached, with F. Gary Gray set to direct. Now it seems as if things have completely changed. Gray is still in the director’s seat, but Foxx and Willis are out. Instead, Gerard Butler is being eyed for Kane and Vin Diesel is being looked at for Lynch.
Skip Woods (A Good Day To Die Hard) and Kyle Ward (Machete Kills) are behind the script for this one, which will follow the titular criminals, one a death row inmate and one a schizophrenic killer. Together, they team up to find a “stolen fortune” as well as save Kane’s wife and daughter.
