Boasting a vintage 1930s 2D visual style and packed with wacky antics, “The Cuphead Show!” is the latest addition to Netflix’s burgeoning animation slate. The 12-episode series, based on the hugely popular run-and-gun game from Studio Mdhr, follows the adventures of brothers Cuphead and Mugman as they hop out of the frying pan and into the fire only to land on their feet ready for more high-octane escapades.
The reckless and impulsive Cuphead, voiced by Tru Valentino, is tempered somewhat by his cautious and slightly neurotic brother Mugman (Frank Todaro), while Elder Kettle (Joe Hanna) is the patient guardian who ensures order in their snug little cottage on Inkwell Isle. Luke Millington-Drake voices the duo’s nemesis, The Devil, with Wayne Brady pitching in as the voice of the Cab Calloway–styled big band leader King Dice, and Grey Griffin as the noir-inflected Ms. Chalice.

When the video game “Cuphead” was released in 2017, it became something of an instant classic in the animation community. Studio Mdhr’s shoot ‘em up indie platformer, in which players take control of the title character as he goes on a quest to defeat the devil, is a loving tribute to the Golden Age of animation, with graphics that mimic the rubber hose style of the earliest Mickey Mouse and Fleischer Studios shorts. Even Dave Wasson, who doesn’t normally play video games, kept his eye on the game when it was first announced in 2013. And when he sat down to play it, he was completely blown away.
“They just nailed it in a way that I don’t think anybody else really ever has in any medium since the original 1930s,” Wasson says.

Ever since getting the role of Snow Job in the ’80s GI Joe animated series, Rob Paulsen realized that his future was not in a local rock band or appearing in commercials, but in the realm of voice acting. Through the decades, Paulsen has taken on many iconic roles, such as Raphael from the ’80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Donatello from the 2012 reboot, Carl Wheezer from Jimmy Neutron, Mighty Max, Major Glory from Dexter’s Lab, Pj from Goof Troop, Steelbeak from Darkwing Duck, Buck Tuddrussel from Time Squad, and hundreds more.
He’s also a survivor of throat cancer and recently wrote a book about it called Voice Lessons.
Of course, two of his biggest roles that come to mind are Yakko Warner, Pinky, and Dr. Scratchansniff characters from the beloved animated series Animaniacs. Wouldn’t you know it, that series will be coming back this November!

"Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today." – Bill Murray, 'Groundhog Day'
Greetings from the apocalypse! This week the groundhog is gonna see his shadow, which means six more weeks of nuclear winter. Seriously, though, I'm freezing my sack off one minute; the next I'm outside wearing a T-shirt. Take Your Meds, East Coast God! There's several cool-looking flicks out and about this week, two of which I was present for filming, although neither director rubbed my belly for luck so no guarantees, people.

This week we have a very special "Survivor of Thunderdome" in the form of Jonathan Levine's excellent zombie romance "Warm Bodies," if only because yours truly is actually In the movie as an official card carrying member of the undead. I visited the Montreal set in late 2011 and was lucky enough to get my shamble on as a zombified extra,...

Apologies for having re-posted John Bensalhia's earlier (transmission-time) review today. Here's the real 'look back'... (Ed.)
Blake's 7. Doctor Who. Having written 50 out of 52 reviews for the classic space opera (which I guess makes me the Peter Tuddenham of Blake's 7 reviewers), coming to the task of reviewing Doctor Who in its TV entirety makes me wise to how similar the two programmes can be at times. Many of the Blake's 7 production team had already cut their teeth on Who whether it was writer Chris Boucher, producer David Maloney or a list of directors too long to mention. Most of the actors, regulars or guests, had turned up in Who at some point. And even some of the stories bear comparison with its grand older brother.
I only mention this because I'm plonked in front of the latest wacky Who adventure called The Lodger. On the surface this doesn't really have anything...

With Matt Smith taking on the role of Doctor Who, BBC Worldwide says the property will be one of its licensing priorities through 2009, series 5 featuring the new Doctor in 2010, and forward. BBC Worldwide has renewed and extended the Doctor Who master toy license with Character Options, which has held the license since 2005. BBC Worldwide is developing new style elements for licensees for series 5 with product expected to be available in summer 2010, probably just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con.
Meanwhile this year will see the release of a range of items, including the launch of Time Squad collectible figures in spring, followed by repackaged and revamped Cyberman Age of Steel products to tie-in with the holiday 2009 special.
So if you're the sort of person who just wasn't satisfied with spending two hundred dollars for a remote control Dalek to terrorize your pet with, you're in luck. And thank you...
