Eric releases on Netflix on May 30, 2024.
A six-episode limited series starring heavyweights Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann will be available on Netflix at the end of May. Abi Morgan created and wrote the series. She is known for her incredible work on films like Shame and The Iron Lady and her Emmy-winning writing on The Hour. The series follows a set of parents who are struggling after their son is kidnapped on his way to school.
Set in New York, Eric replicates some of the incredible work of past crime-thrilling series from Netflix, such as Mindhunters, Griselda, and Ripley. The often dark tone of the series brings a nice twist with the introduction of Eric. Eric is a character that Vincent and Cassie’s son Edgar had drawn. The larger-than-life monster is brought to life after Edgar’s kidnapping, bringing a much-needed comedic aspect to the series.

Like many of you, I was scratching my head when I learned that director Renny Harlin would be making not one, not two, but three movies based on the horror cult classic The Strangers. While a pretty slick horror flick, the original spawned a modest follow-up that didn’t get a ton of buzz. When it came out, I figured it was a series that had run its course. It seems this is not so, with Lionsgate releasing a widely ambitious trilogy of horror films this year (it’s like the horror version of Kevin Costner’s Horizon).
Notably, it marks the return of director Renny Harlin to the horror genre. Now mostly known for his action films, such as the classics Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and many more – horror was where he made his original reputation. Prison, which gave Viggo Mortensen his first leading role,...

After spending time with Neil Jordan’s not-campy-enough stalker film Greta (listen) and Olivier Assayas’ Kristen Stewart starring 2016 thriller Personal Shopper (listen), it’s time to revisit Alfred Hitchcock with a look at his 1951 film, Strangers on a Train.

The 75th Primetime Emmys has officially come and gone, and unfortunately for Better Call Saul, the final season of the critically and commercially reviewed series walked out empty-handed. What’s even worse is that the prequel to Breaking Bad has an unwanted record as Better Call Saul has 53 Primetime Emmy nominations and does not have a single win. Its predecessor, Breaking Bad, was an Emmy darling as it has 16 wins under its belt. The Emmys are no stranger to snubbing television content before – The Wire, The Leftovers, Peaky Blinders, and Mindhunters are some of the most notable examples.

We’ve spent February discussing Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen), the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), and Pedro Almodóvar’s controversial 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In (listen). Now we’re wrapping up the month with Neil Jordan’s wacky May/December stalker film, Greta (2018).
In the film, Chloë Grace Moretz plays Frances, a new to New York girl who befriends an older woman, Greta (Isabelle Huppert) after returning her lost purse. While the pair strike up an unlikely friendship, Frances’ roommate Erica (Maika Monroe) finds the relationship unusual.
What Frances doesn’t know is that Greta is more than a sad, lonely old woman. She’s got secrets in a trunk, a syringe full of sedatives, and a penchant for burying her secrets, including private investigator Stephen Rea, in the basement.
Will Frances wind up like all of Greta’s other girls?...

Television series don't always end on their own terms. Some of the greatest shows in the medium's history have been canceled due to low ratings before they could finish telling their overarching story or just as they were hitting their stride creatively. Some of the most egregious examples of series getting the axe before their time include "My So-Called Life," "Arrested Development," "Frank's Place," "Sports Night," "I'll Fly Away," "Deadwood," and "Mindhunters." It's possible no one has had a more brutal small-screen run than Judd Apatow, who, before he became a hit-making film producer, watched helplessly as three superb, critically acclaimed comedies — "The Ben Stiller Show," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" — failed to earn a second season.
Sometimes, fan enthusiasm results in these works getting revived in some incarnation or another, and, unfortunately, the results are often unsightly. But at least there's a reason for going back. The same isn't...

Have you been wondering about "Wonder Man"? You're in good company. Given the recent news that Marvel is slowing its roll on releasing new TV shows and revamping its television production process to, well, make more sense, the future of most MCU shows is a bit nebulous. It's not that these shows won't happen, but between SAG-AFTRA's ongoing fight for fair pay and the entertainment industry's general post-pandemic belt-tightening, any show that's not already on the release schedule feels a little bit up in the air.
Thankfully, one of the most intriguing upcoming Marvel shows, "Wonder Man," still seems to be in the works as of publication time. With a crowded slate of shows on the horizon, including "Hawkeye" spinoff "Echo," "WandaVision" spinoff "Agatha: Darkhold Diaries", Riri Williams-led series "Ironheart," and reboot "Daredevil: Born Again," it's hard to remember what phase of the MCU we're even in anymore, nonetheless what's releasing next.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, we discuss one of the most intriguing actors of his generation: Val Kilmer! To tackle such an enigma, we bring in the legendary Katie Walsh! A must-follow on Twitter, a co-host of the insatiably-entertaining Miami Nice Podcast, and an accomplished writer. TV had the run of the place for awhile there during the pandemic. But now that vaccinations are speeding up and the weather is warming, it’s film’s time to shine. At least that’s the conclusion that can be drawn from HBO Max’s list of new releases for June 2021.
There are no real original TV series of note coming this month, which is highly unusual for HBO and HBO Max. In their place, however, are some really impressive film offerings. Major Warner Bros. titles like The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (June 4) and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights (June 11) both arrive this month. So too do some interesting documentaries like Revolutionary Rent on June 15 and Lfg on June 24. The former deals with the staging of the musical Rent in Cuba and the latter follows the U.S. women’s soccer team’s fight for equal pay.

Netflix has set an all-star cast for the animation-live action hybrid limited series “Lost Ollie.”
Mary J. Blige, Gina Rodriguez, Jake Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Kesler Talbot, and Jonathan Groff have all been cast in major roles in the four-episode series.
The show is inspired by the book “Ollie’s Oddyssey” by William Joyce. It follows a lost toy on an epic adventure, searching across the country for the boy who lost him, and the story of the boy who lost more than a best friend.
Groff will voice Ollie, a handmade toy rabbit stitched together from odds and ends. Ollie has a pure spirit with a heart of gold and never ruins a chance to make friends. He’s been best friends with Billy (Talbot) since forever, until one day he ends up in a resale shop with no way home. Though he’s often afraid of the unknown,...

The film was released in 1974 and starred Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. Nicholson played Gittes, who is originally hired to expose an adulterer but becomes embroiled in a much larger plot. Roman Polanski directed with Robert Evans producing. The film became a box office and critical hit upon its release, racking up eleven Academy Award nominations. Towne ultimately took home the film’s lone Oscar statuette for best original screenplay. A sequel titled “The Two Jakes” was released in 1990 with Nicholson and Towne returning.

One of Netflix’s most popular series is set to return when “Mindhunters” comes back for its second season.

Executive-produced by Season 1 frontwoman Jessica Biel, The Sinner‘s new story follows Ambrose (played by Bill Pullman) as he returns to his hometown in rural New York to assess an unsettling and heart-wrenching crime — parents murdered by their 11-year-old son (Alex, Inc.’s Elisha Henig), with no apparent motive.

Paramount Pictures new studio head Jim Gianopulos is already getting to work on some big projects for the studio. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he spoke his plans moving forward with World War Z 2. Gianopulos not only confirmed that director David Fincher and actor Brad Pitt are attached to the project, but it is also in "advanced development."
Back in April, Fincher was reportedly close to a deal to direct the sequel, but now we have confirmation from Paramount's Studio head. Fincher hasn’t directed a feature film since Gone Girl. He has turned his attention to television lately, recently shooting the Netflix pilot Mind Hunters.
It won't be the first time Fincher and Pitt have worked together on a project, World War Z 2 would mark their fourth film together, having previously worked on Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Although there is no official word about when World War Z sequel would begin production, sources close to Variety say that it would probably begin in the first quarter of 2018.

While World War Z may not have been the classic zombie flick fans of the book were hoping for, the film still managed to be a thrilling tale that moved at breakneck speed. Despite all the reshoots and the tampering from the studio, World War Z turned out to be one heck of a Frankenstein's monster. What's more, the movie also made back over half a billion dollars in box office gross, which isn't bad when you look at its troubled production.
But its production woes were easily forgotten, and after the box office success, a sequel was inevitable. And yet, here we are in 2016, with no sequel yet in hand. The Impossible's J.A. Bayona was originally set to helm the sequel, but has since moved on to Jurassic World 2 -- probably a good move on his part, career-wise. This left World War Z 2 without a father. But,...

Director David Fincher helped put Netflix original series on the map by directing the first two episodes of House of Cards and setting the tone and visual style of that show (he remains an executive producer). After a couple of failed attempts to get shows off the ground at HBO, it looks like Fincher is heading back to the streaming service, and actress Charlize Theron may be to thank for it.
Deadline reports that Fincher and Theron will executive produce a new series called Mindhunter, which is based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, written by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. Check out the synopsis:
He has hunted some of the most notorious and sadistic criminals of our time: The Trailside Killer in San Francisco, the Atlanta Child murderer. He has confronted, interviewed and researched dozens of serial killers and assassins,...

Blazing a trail in 1995, Hackers tackled web culture on screen before the internet really took off. The cyber-thriller helped kick-start the career of a major Hollywood A-lister and swiftly became a cult classic thanks to its Hacker Manifesto.

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

There was a time, probably much shorter than we actually remember, when Renny Harlin was sort of a big deal in Hollywood. But for every "Die Hard 2" or "Deep Blue Sea," he would also drop stuff like "The Adventures Of Ford Fairlane" or "Mindhunters," and pretty soon the crap was outweighing the enjoyable schlock until he's now helming stuff like January's Doa "The Legend Of Hercules." But, never one to quit, he's got another gig lined up. Harlin will helm "Fallen Cross," with filming to start at the end of the year. Penned by David Christopher O'Neill, the story "centers on Timothy Cole, a reformed ex-mafia enforcer who is in a desperate struggle to protect his family from the crime syndicate he once served, the Chicago Cross. But first he must find a way to escape the confines of prison and return to his ruthless killer ways to cut...

Everyone has a handful of films they're just compelled to watch at least once a year. For me, quite a few of those are made by the maestro of the B action movie, Renny Harlin. As it just so happens, this past weekend I was getting my Harlin fix with the incomparable double bill that is Deep Blue Sea and Mindhunters (if you've never seen this batty gem, you're sorely missing out), when fellow Harlin aficionado Fred Topel informed that he'd once seen a different ending to the movie that has never been publicly released. Obviously the below contains spoilers for Deep Blue Sea. Then again, if you haven't seen Deep Blue Sea at this point, you're not really living, anyway, and so spoilers will have no emotional effect on your dead...

What began as a clever idea cooked up by filmmakers with more ingenuity than production money has now become a low-budget playground for filmmakers of every race, creed, nationality, and age bracket. We're talking (once again) about "found footage" horror cinema, that recently omnipresent filmmaking presentation that asks the viewer to "buy" that they're watching actual video material.
Although largely the domain of independents both American (The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, Grave Encounters) and imported (Troll Hunter, [Rec], Lake Mungo), the "found footage" hook has also enticed filmmakers as varied as Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), George Romero (Diary of the Dead), and Barry Levinson (The Bay). So clearly there's something about the gimmick that appeals to filmmakers and film watchers in equal measure, and now we have another veteran ready to take a swing at the format.

Remember when director Renny Harlin was pretty awesome? Sure he hasn’t really made a masterpiece or reached the level of someone like John Carpenter, but he sure did direct a lot of fun movies: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Deep Blue Sea. Even Mindhunters is solid brainless entertainment.
What happened to that guy? The less said about The Covenant, 12 Rounds, and 5 Days of War, the better. His latest, Devil’s Pass (IFC releases it in select theaters and on VOD August 23), is not a return to form. It has far more in common with his recent work than his early career. Renny has lost his groove.

How to Watch Danny Boyle's 'Frankenstein,' Starring 'Star Trek 2's New Villain, Benedict Cumberbatch
Last February Danny Boyle directed a new stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein starring Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC's Sherlock, Star Trek 2) and Jonny Lee Miller (Hackers, Mindhunters) for the Royal National Theatre in London. Cumberbatch and Miller alternated playing both Victor Frankenstein and his monster, and by all accounts the production was both a critical and commercial hit throughout its two-plus month run. A recording of the play was broadcast to select theaters in the UK and the Us last year, and apparently watching it on the big screen was almost as appealing as on the stage, because it's about to happen again. Fathom Events will be exhibiting the recording on June 6 and 7th this year. And if you're worried about missing out on the duality of...

Girl power is replaced by soft-lens lesbian sex scenes in this retrogressive adaptation of James Cañón's acclaimed novel
As hard as atrocities such as Sex and the City 2 and Confessions of a Shopaholic have tried, there are still a handful of female roles out there that don't reduce an entire gender to a shrieking vision of dildo-waving and consumerism. You just need to look at James Cañón's book Tales From the Town of Widows for proof.
The story of a small Colombian village left stranded when all its men are abducted by a guerilla army, the novel has been praised for its starkly realistic portrayal of women who are forced to create and maintain a new society without relying on outdated masculine ideals. And now it has been turned into a film, titled Without Men. Can this adaptation strike the same gutsy note for feminism as Tales From the Town of Widows?...

The series is based on about a killer thief who abides by a certain code of honor who never steals money from poor people and his word is his bond. “This is going to be fun!” wrote Chiklis on his Twitter account. Other confirmed actors in the cast included Clifton Collins Jr. (“Star Trek,” “Mindhunters”) and Wendell Pierce (“The Wire,” “Ray”). It was reported previously that singer/actress Jennifer Lopez is in negotiations to play the female lead. Director Taylor Hackford will helm and produce the project. His previous directed films included “Love Ranch,” “Proof of Life,” and “The Devil’s Advocate. The adapted screenplay is written by John J. McLaughlin. He recently penned “Black Swan” last year. Yeah, yeah, the header was a cheap shot. Cram it.
So here's the thing about Renny Harlin: He's not a particularly good director. Sure, he's made some entertaining films -- The Long Kiss Goodnight remains a clever and enjoyable classic, and God knows I love every dumb fucking minute of Deep Blue Sea. But he also directed Cutthroat Island, Die Hard 2, The Covenant, and the direct-to-dvd shitstravaganza Mindhunters (which is way worse than you've heard).
So when I hear that he's actually tackling a serious subject, I get nervous as fuck, because, as I said once before, he's a B-movie director who routinely receives A-movie funding. It appears that's happened again, with his new film, Five Days Of War. The film is about journalists covering the Russo-Georgian War of 2008, and as usual for these types of film, it's a glossy, action-heavy kaboomfest that paints the journalists as affable rogues.

Anchor Bay has recently released the trailer and one sheet for the latest action flick from Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, 12 Rounds), 5 Days of War which hits theaters on August 19th. The film stars Rupert Friend (The Young Victoria, Jolene), Emmanuelle Chriqui ("Entourage"), and Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) as three people caught in the 5-day warzone created by the Russia-Georgian Republic conflict of 2008. Renny Harlin's track record is spotty and his films tend to vary wildly in quality. At least here he's got a talented group of young actors to lead the film with seasoned pros like Val Kilmer (MacGruber, Tombstone), Andy Garcia (City Island, Ocean's Eleven), and Heather Graham (The Hangover) to bolster the film. However he's wasted lineups better than this (see: Cleaner, Mindhunters), so it'll be interesting to see how it panned out.

Perhaps trying to reinvent himself, Harlin decided to take on a gritty real-life war drama -- albeit complete with some of his trademark over-the-top explosive action. And his Mindhunters co-star Val Kilmer. Synopsis: 5 Days Of War is an action-packed...
