With "Avengers: Endgame" behind us and Chris Evans having retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe until further notice, we can all agree that "Captain America: The First Avenger" is the best Steve Rogers solo film, right? From its character work to its action sequences and a rousing score by the legendary Alan Silvestri, director Joe Johnston's WWII adventure is a top-tier MCU movie. While it may lack the visceral melees that the Russo Brothers brought to its sequels, "The First Avenger" delivers more than enough whiz-bang thrills and Brooklyn attitude to make up the difference (that and its politics are much less confused than those of "The Winter Soldier").
Johnston's superhero picture also boasts what is still one of the McU's most distinguished casts, pairing Evans with Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, and Dominic Cooper. Even Natalie Dormer, David Bradley,...

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Australian satirist Barry Humphries, known for his onstage and TV drag persona Edna Everage and for his character Sir Les Patterson, has died. He was 89.
The BBC reported that Humphries had been in hospital in Sydney, Australia, and had been suffering from complications following surgery in March.
“A great wit, satirist, writer and an absolute one-of-kind, he was both gifted and a gift,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said following the news of Humphries’ death.
“Rip Barry Humphries – one of the greatest ever Australians – and a comic genius who used his exuberant alter egos, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, to say the otherwise unsayable. Also an infallibly brilliant Spectator contributor. What a loss,” said former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Twitter.

Sally Ann Howes, who began her acting career as a child and was best known for starring in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” opposite Dick Van Dyke, died on Dec. 19. She was 91.
Her death was confirmed by her nephew, Toby Howes, who tweeted: “I can also confirm the passing of my beloved Aunty Sally Ann Howes who died peacefully in her sleep yesterday. My brother & I thought Sally Ann might hold on until the Christmas screening of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ as this would have greatly appealed to her mischievous side.”
“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” is often broadcast on Christmas Day in the U.K.
In a career that spanned five decades, Howes racked up 40 film and television credits, having spent the latter half of her career focusing on the theater, including a part in Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music” at the New York City Opera in 1990.

Most moviegoers who witnessed the 2020 Sundance Film Festival premiere of “Palm Springs” probably did not expect that it would be the only traditional comedy nominated for Best Musical or Comedy at this year’s Golden Globes. After all, comedies (and dramedies) have disproportionately dominated the category for the past decade, while only eight musicals have managed to snag bids. However, the 2021 lineup turned out to be another deviation from the norm in a year full of them.
Joining “Palm Springs” is the unconventional mockumentary “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” which takes the subversiveness of its predecessor to a whole new level. The other three slots are filled by “The Prom,” a standard musical adaptation of the Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” a live stage recording of the legit hit, and “Music,” an original musical drama. The last time three musicals competed against each other for the top honor was in 2008, and it only happened six times before that.

When Kyle MacLachlan won a Golden Globe award in 1991, he was nominated for the television series “Twin Peaks” in the role of Agent Dale Cooper. In 2018, when he attends the 75th Annual Golden Globes, he’ll again be nominated in the TV category for his portrayal of Dale Cooper.
But should he be nominated for film, instead?
Though no one debated what “Twin Peaks” was when it debuted on ABC in 1990, many consider its sequel, “The Return,” to be more of a film than a TV show. And MacLachlan is one of them.

“I lean toward the film example only because it was written as one story,” MacLachlan said in an interview with IndieWire, shortly after the nominations were announced. “We were all encouraged not to refer to it as episodes, but as hours.

The creator of Peaky Blinders, Stephen Knight, is teaming up with Tom Hardy to develop a new BBC series. The show is based on the work of Charles Dickens and it will adapt his classic stories.
According to THR, the first season of the series will start with A Christmas Carol. The classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge will be told in three hourlong episodes and Ridley Scott's Scott Free London production company will be producing.
Hardy and Knight have previously worked together on the shows on the shows Taboo and Peaky Blinders, so you can bet we are going to get another quality series! I assume we are going to get a very different, dark, and stylized version of this story than anything we've ever seen before. I wonder if we'll see Hardy in the role of Scrooge because that would be amazing!

“A Dickens Delight”
By Raymond Benson
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby may not immediately come to mind when naming the most well-known of author Charles Dickens’ novels, but it’s arguably one of his best. Besides being a cracking good story in print, the Royal Shakespeare Company famously produced an 8-1/2-hour long Tony Award-winning play (staged in two parts, with a dinner break) in 1980 that was one of this reviewer’s most treasured theatrical experiences.
The motion picture, released in 2002 to positive critical acclaim but little enthusiasm from ticket-buyers, is also a delight. Writer/director Douglas McGrath whittled down Dickens’ massive tome to a mere 132 minutes, and yet one doesn’t miss the extracted bits. The screenplay is an essential lesson in adaptation. Now a gorgeously rendered Blu-ray release from Twilight Time, Nickleby can be re-evaluated and appreciated for the superb achievement it is.

The second documentary by Douglas McGrath (best known for his narrative films Emma and Nicholas Nickleby), Becoming Mike Nichols explores the early career of Nichols through three specific phases: his early life as a German immigrant living in New York, his early collaborations during and after college with Elaine May, and his early directing career on stage and eventually on screen. Playing as a cross between a biography and directing master class, Becoming Mike Nichols is an engaging study of the filmmaker’s early career. We spoke with McGrath at the Sundance Film Festival, where his film had its world premiere, about what would be the director’s final performance, so to speak, as discussed in the interview.

'L'Inhumaine': Marcel L'Herbier silent classic stars Jaque Catelain and Georgette Leblanc. Marcel L'Herbier silent 'L'Inhumaine': 'Intense sensory integration of sight' For me, the real jewel in the crown of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival's “A Day of Silents,” held on Dec. 5, '15, at the Castro Theatre, was Marcel L'Herbier's The Inhuman Woman / L'Inhumaine (1924). The screening of this mix of desire and seduction with science fiction turned out to be an intense sensory integration of sight and sound. First, the sight. I had not seen any other films directed by L'Herbier (e.g., L'Argent, La Comédie du bonheur), so L'Inhumaine, with its spectacular visuals, came as a big surprise to me. For instance, the film features a stand-out scene of a car racing down a wooded highway from the driver's point of view, while in a party sequence I really liked the effect of the serving staff wearing sardonic face masks,...

Daniel Radcliffe will win an Oscar, eventually. He's driven, he's eclectic, he's riding Leonardo DiCaprio-esque blockbuster momentum that he's happy to cash in for provocative material, and, most importantly, he's good. And getting better. Holding his own against Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and Ralph Fiennes for a decade certainly helped. Based on the talent assembled for his latest project, Radcliffe's time could be coming sooner than later. Goldcrest Films announced today that Sir Ben Kinglsey ("Schindler's List") and Brie Larson ("Short Term 12") will join Radcliffe in Killer Films' "Brooklyn Bridge," the story of engineer Washington Roebling and his calamitous road to realizing New York City's iconic structure. Radcliffe will play Roebling, who inherits the Brooklyn Bridge project from his father (Kinglsey) and finds an unlikely working partner in his wife, Emily (Larson). Radcliffe's costars provide an awards-friendly bedrock for "Brooklyn Bridge." Kinglsey is a four-time Oscar nominee, picking...

Daniel Radcliffe has been set to play the engineer, Washington Roebling, who built the Brooklyn Bridge in the aptly titled Brooklyn Bridge for several months now. Far be it from me to make any grand sweeping statements on the year in film this early, but as of July 2014, I would argue it’s already been a fascinating year for scores. Just look at blockbusters. We’ve heard both the invigoratingly new and the depressingly dull. Ambitious combinations have even produced a commendable failure here and there. Hollywood studios almost always take the safe road in their big-budget franchises, but the music attached to those tentpoles feels less restrained and not nearly as beholden to manageable cliches.
Thus far we’ve had a tremendous grab bag in film music (and I say this as someone who hasn’t yet seen Under the Skin), but what’s been the best to come out of it? Without further ado…

Charlie Hunnam: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ gets its Christian Grey (photo: shirtless Charlie Hunnam in ‘Pacific Rim’) In the last couple of weeks, the world has been rocked by several revelations that have left earthlings — depending on their particular expectations, prejudices, and mental health — infuriated, terrified, shocked, thrilled. Am I referring to the reported chemical attacks in Syria and the Obama administration’s determination that the U.S. should get involved in that country’s bloody civil war? Syrius Chemical Civil War? Is Obama endorsing a new video game? Is it in 3D? Nope, that’s not what I’m talking about. Nor am I referring to the ivory trade and the relentless poaching of African elephants, which will quite possibly lead to their extinction in the very, very near future. Or to the nearly 1,000 manatees and dolphins that have met with slow and agonizing deaths in Florida’s grossly polluted waterways.

Writing on Twitter, British author E.L. James said: “I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.”
The 23-year-old actress is best known for roles in The Social Network and 21 Jump Street. She also played one of the title roles in Fox sitcom Ben and Kate, which was cancelled earlier this year after one season.
She is currently filming a modern-day re-telling of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline and also stars in an adaptation of video game Need for Speed, opposite Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, which is set for release in March 2014.

Fifty Shades of Grey, the fastest-selling book of all time, has been in the running for an adaptation for a little while now.
Needless to say, the rumours have been circulating for a while now as to who will be taking the leading roles of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, and now the wait is over, with author E.L. James herself announcing the casting.
Dakota Johnson will be playing the female lead as Anastasia Steele, with Charlie Hunnam starring opposite as Christian Grey.
Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) was officially announced as the director back in June, and she’ll be taking the helm with a script penned by Kelly Marcel (Terra Nova, Saving Mr. Banks).
Dana Brunetti (The Social Network) and Michael De Luca (Moneyball) will be producing alongside James.
Courtesy of Amazon, here’s the synopsis for the original novel:

One hour after announcing the casting of Dakota Johnson as the female lead, author E.L. James used her Twitter account to announce the male lead role in the upcoming film adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey" at Universal Pictures and Focus Features.
33-year-old Charlie Hunnam is set to play billionaire Christian Grey in the film which explores his meeting with virgin college student Anastasia Steele (Johnson), and the relationship they develop which is steeped in bondage, S&M, domination and submission
Hunnam is best known for his leading role of Jax on FX's "Sons of Anarchy," and most recently starred as the lead in Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim".
Hunnam first came to prominence in the original UK "Queer as Folk" and went on to roles in "Nicholas Nickleby," "Children of Men," "Abandon," "Cold Mountain" and the sitcom "Undeclared".

Thanks to 007, The Hobbit and a marked lack of Christmas turkeys, this year's festive takings look set to trounce 2011
The winner
Not many films find themselves topping the box office chart on the sixth week of release, but that is exactly what Skyfall has just achieved, elbowing aside The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 after its two-week reign at the summit. With a reasonable drop of 41% from the previous weekend, Skyfall posted three-day takings of £2.28m for a 38-day total of £93.77m. With Monday and Tuesday box office now announced by Sony, the film has achieved 40-day takings of £94.28m, overtaking previous UK record holder Avatar (£94.03m). Mild ticket-price inflation favours the Bond film, but Skyfall has reached its awesome tally without the benefit of 3D premium prices. Now all eyes are on whether Skyfall can be the first film to crack £100m at UK cinemas.

The Queen enjoys vintage royal footage, while Derek Jacobi's Sidney Turtlebaum character is set to ride again
Royal album
Trash was thrilled to witness the Queen visiting BFI Southbank last week as the old place celebrated its 60th birthday. The Queen appeared to enjoy the film presentation in the venerable National Film Theatre and, dressed in elegant purple coat and hat, flashed a satisfied smile at me – or so I like to think – as she walked along the aisle to the exit. She had just been treated to some lovely stuff from the BFI archive, including Scenes at Balmoral (1896), the first known filmed images of a British monarch, which depicted Queen Victoria and Tsar Nicholas II in the grounds of the Scottish castle.
Her Majesty – it's "Ma'am as in jam", according to the protocol instructions I received – must have then been very moved to see home cine footage from...

To celebrate the BFI National Film Theatre's 60th birthday I was invited to a diamond event with a very special guest. But were we just actors in Her Majesty's special film?
It was, in the words of the official invitation, a "double diamond" event. The BFI National Film Theatre on London's South Bank is 60 years old. So is the Queen's reign. BFI officials, film-makers and journalists were therefore requested by BFI chair Greg Dyke to come to the film theatre itself, where Her Majesty herself would be in attendance, and we would watch a newly restored 1953 3D film called Royal Review made at the time of the Coronation. This was going to be the last hurrah for the Jubilympic spirit of 2012.
We milled uncertainly around in the Benugo riverfront bar before the royal arrival. A pianist plinked a subdued sort of dinner jazz while we sipped tea, as if at a funeral.

Harold Pinter theatre; Barbican, London
Trevor Nunn began the summer by directing a heavy-handed Kiss Me Kate; he ends it by staging a star-encrusted but tepid Chorus of Disapproval. What a waste. Of Alan Ayckbourn, whose 1984 play has not been taken seriously, and therefore looks unfunny. And of Nunn, who has been innovative (Nicholas Nickleby) and meticulous (his Merchant of Venice was a revelation because of its detail), and who has helped (with Gorky's Summerfolk) to widen the theatrical repertoire but is in danger of looking fusty.
Rob Brydon fans may think his performance alone is enough to justify the price of a ticket. He certainly provides the high points of the evening. As the director of the Pendon Light Operatic Society's amateur production of The Beggar's Opera, Brydon is hangdog and top dog: bullying, cardiganed, down in the dumps, overweening. He unleashes a terrific riff when, while trying out...

David Copperfield (1911) Produced by Thanhouser Company
What a terrific little gem of cinema history this is. I just viewed this wonderfully restored DVD of a 1911 3-reel version of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield. Now, before you chuckle at the thought that a Dickens story as long as David Copperfield[/link] can be condensed into three 10-minute reels, I am reviewing this as a treasure from the early days of the art of cinema. This is like a “Cliff Notes” version (or more like Classic Comics version) of David Copperfield.
The visual quality of this transfer is very good. Films of this vintage are often many generations away from the original elements. Aside from being a fun little condensation of the Dickens original, it is a wonderful, charming look at how movies were presented in the early part of the 20th century. This ambitious adaptation was filmed in three installments.

Charlie Hunnam, Jax in FX’s Sons of Anarchy, is going to take an award show by storm. He’ll do it in his time and on his terms, though. The Emmys can come to him.
Or, as he put it in a recent interview, “Fuck the Emmys.”
The Samcro Vice President says this with more than the confidence of youth on his side. He has a sterling silver filmography – a chain of high-value supporting parts in award-rich films.
The odds that such roles will keep coming when you look close enough to detect a trend. Hunnam plays characters that step from the shadows to steal the spotlight: Subtle psychos, sociopaths, suicides – Charlie may strike audiences as standard-issue Hollywood handsome at first glance, but by a couple scenes in, he’s channeling low-volume, high-voltage crazy.
Trace that lineage through his film credits and you figure an award statue is only a matter of time.

Schoolgirl stage show Matilda The Musical made history on Sunday night after scooping seven trophies at Britain's prestigious Olivier Awards.
The West End production took home Best New Musical, Best Director (Matthew Warchus), Best Actor in a Musical (Bertie Carvel), and Best Actress in a Musical, presented jointly to the four child stars who share the title role.
Eleanor Worthington-Cox, who at 10 years old became the youngest Olivier Award winner, said of her win, "That's pretty cool. Scary. But I find that pretty amazing."
Matilda also swept the technical categories for choreography, set design and sound design.
The trophy for Mastercard Best Play went to John Hodge's Collaborators, and taking home the prize for Best Actor were Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, who alternated the roles of scientist and creature in Danny Boyle's Frankenstein.
Ruth Wilson saw off competition from the likes of Kristen Scott Thomas and Celia Imrie to land Best Actress for her performance in Anna Christie.
The cast of Les Miserables was handed the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award, while Anna Christie was named Best Revival and Crazy for You was the Best Musical Revival.
The Olivier Awards, which celebrate the best of the year's British stage shows, was hosted by Sweeney Todd co-stars Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball at London's Royal Opera House.
Matilda The Musical's big evening eclipsed the previous record set in 1980 by Nicholas Nickleby when it brought home six trophies.

Dr. Garth Twa takes an in-depth look at La Grande Illusion - a revolutionary milestone of visual art, exclusively for @puremovies We all have those films, those films that open us up. La Grand Illusion is one of those films. It was for Orson Welles, and for Woody Allen. That’s what so important about what Studiocanal is doing. ‘With every foot of film lost, we lose a link to our culture, to the world around us, to each other, and to ourselves,’ Martin Scorsese says, 'movies touch our hearts, and awaken our vision, and change the way we see things. They take us to other places. They open doors and minds. Movies are the memories of our lifetime. We need to keep them alive.' In addition to restoring and re-releasing La Grand Illusion, this year Studiocanal are also bringing out Marcel Carné’s Quai des Brumes, Luis Bunuel...

Hang around in Calderdale, and you could well end up in a movie. Our Hebden Bridge outpost, Jill Robinson, reels off some the greats
Last year saw the premiere at the Hebden Bridge Picture House of the film A Calder Valley Christmas, with local people (including this outpost of the Northerner) queuing around the block to be among the first to see it. Directed by local film-maker Nick Wilding, the piece combines archive material, reminiscences about bad winters, carols, poems, scenes of local Mummers and other traditions, and monologues by the incomparable Ian Dewhirst MBE. (He actually lives in Keighley, but he tells such a good tale that he is often invited over the hill.) Like all the best films, there is an accompanying song, Christmas in Hebden Bridge, performed by children from local schools.
