It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

“The Bear” cooked up a storm for its freshman season at the Emmy Awards, gaining a total of 13 nominations across the board with bids in acting, writing, directing, editing, casting, sound and of course Best Comedy Series. Having debuted way early in the Emmy eligibility period, it has sustained its buzz throughout the year with various award wins at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild of America and Producers Guild of America. Included as part of their showcase is Oliver Platt for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his performance as Jimmy “Cicero” Kalinowski, his fifth nomination overall. Can he finally win an Emmy?
This is Platt’s first Emmy bid in a comedy category, having previously been mentioned for three dramas: “The West Wing” in 2001 and “Nip/Tuck” in 2008 for Best Drama Guest Actor, and “Huff” from 2005-2006 for Best Drama Supporting Actor. Other credits he has had in...

Emma Thompson has turned in a host of eclectic, effective, excellent performances throughout her illustrious career. She started out with period dramas such as “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” before later moving into fantasy with roles in “Nanny McPhee” and “Harry Potter.” Add to that top-tier performances in the likes of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Cruella,” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” and you’ve got one hell of a performer.
However, Thompson has stated herself that the role she gets the most praise for is actually… “Love Actually.” The classic Richard Curtis Christmas movie, which turns 20 this year, tells the interconnected love stories of eight different sets of people with Thompson delivering the most emotional and heartbreaking storyline of all of them. Thompson’s Karen is an under-appreciated stay-at-home mother who spends her days looking after the kids, making costumes for their school nativity,...

Veteran actor Patricia Clarkson thinks it’s time for her “Monica” co-star Trace Lysette to play the love interest of the “hot guys in Hollywood.”
“The next big step is to play opposite Brad Pitt,” she tells Variety. “It’s time for her to be the love interest of these stars. It’s where she belongs.”
The two actors are both on the awards circuit for the critically acclaimed drama which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year, resulting in Lysette receiving an 11-minute standing ovation. The “Transparent” actor was the first openly transgender performer to headline a film in competition at the oldest running festival in the world. After acquiring the movie in December, IFC Films released it in theaters on May 12, 10 days after the start of the WGA strike.

Patricia Clarkson is no stranger to playing a mother in turmoil.
She earned an Oscar nomination for her performance as a woman perhaps oxymoronically named Joy and dealing with breast cancer in “Pieces of April” (2003). On the small screen, she earned an Emmy nomination for portraying Adora, a bitterly faded Southern belle with Munchausen by proxy syndrome in “Sharp Objects” (2018). Now, in director/co-writer Andrea Pallaoro’s “Monica,” she plays Eugenia, a Midwestern mother dying of brain cancer and now getting reacquainted as best she can with her estranged daughter (Trace Lysette), who is trans.
In “Pieces of April,” “I was a very present, very feisty woman. [With ‘Monica’], I’m considerably older. I’m 20 years older. She really is on borrowed time,” Clarkson said in a recent interview with IndieWire. As for preparing to play a woman physically and psychologically succumbing to the terminal illness, she added, “I’ll tell you this: the preparation,...

Derek Luke always knew he wanted to be a hero — or rather, play one. But when the opportunity for him to join the Marvel universe arose in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” he wasn’t so sure — even after his agent, the late Ed Limato, insisted.
“If he sent me something, he would say, ‘Do you like it? Alright we’ll get him next time, kiddo, no pressure,’” Luke says. “This was the only script that he said, ‘You need to do this. And I’m like, ‘No. Absolutely not. First of all, Marvel, like, what is that?’”
Limato was firm, so Luke took a meeting with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. Upon entering his office, Luke’s eyes were drawn to a section of the wall full of Black characters, ones he didn’t even know existed. Luke leaned in and took the role.

No genre of the last few decades can get on my nerves like the indie quirkfest. You know: those movies that keep poking you in the ribs to giggle at their cutely addled characters with their adorable eccentricities — I’m talking woe-is-us hipster comedies like “Pieces of April,” “Lars and the Real Girl” and the pop-crossover “Citizen Kane” of the genre, “Little Miss Sunshine.” The trouble with these movies is that even as they pretend to be lifesize, they’re too conscious about packaging their prefab weirdness; they’re edgy sitcoms minus the laugh tracks. But Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me,” which opened the Berlin Film Festival today, demonstrates how the indie quirkfest can be resonant and real, with characters who have soul instead of a chewy center.
The movie’s main figures aren’t just suffering from off-kilter dilemmas — they have problems we might characterize as everyday mental illness.

Derek Luke will star in “Rare Objects,” reuniting with Katie Holmes nearly two decades after the pair appeared together in 2003’s “Pieces of April.”
Holmes not only stars in “Rare Objects,” but will produce and direct the movie as well. She also co-wrote its screenplay, which is based on Kathleen Tessaro’s novel of the same name, with Phaedon Papadopoulos. Julia Mayorga, the breakout star of Showtime’s “American Rust,” is part of the ensemble.
Luke will also appear in another (still-untitled) film directed by Holmes alongside Jim Sturgess and Melissa Leo.

Exclusive: Peter Hedges, like so many filmmakers looking not to lose their creative mojo during the pandemic, managed at the height of the Covid lockdown to take advantage of many talented actors trying to survive in the same circumstance, and in the best show business tradition managed to create a new film, The Same Storm, that turned out to be so much more than he could have imagined.
Enlisting the talents of the likes of Elaine May, Mary-Louise Parker, Noma Dumezweni, Judith Light, Sandra Oh, Moses Ingram, Danny Burstein, Ron Livingston, Rosemarie DeWitt, Raza Jeffrey, Daphne Rubin-Vega and many more, he and his team developed a sophisticated shooting system, sent the equipment to each star with some production design and camera setup advice, and created a feature-length movie comprised of a series of vignettes that hand off to one another with seamless editing magic.

Just like Beyonce and Jay-Z, four is the magic number for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year. Nominations will be announced on Feb. 4 and the ceremony will be held on April 4 (which is also Bey and Jay’s wedding anniversary). And if our odds turn out to be correct, Chadwick Boseman will go into the record books as the first person to earn four nominations for film in a single year.
Boseman is in contention for the final two films of his too-short career, “Da 5 Bloods,” which came out two months before his death in August from colon cancer, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which was released in December. As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

Believe it or not, Scarlett Johansson had never received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination before. But that all changed Wednesday when she got not one but two individual ones — lead actress for “Marriage Story” and supporting actress for “Jojo Rabbit” — making it just the 11th time an actor has scored double individual film bids.
Johansson’s double-dipping comes just a year after Emily Blunt got shortlisted her performances in “Mary Poppins Returns” and “A Quiet Place,” winning supporting for the latter. Here are the first 10 instances:
1. Julianne Moore (1999): “The End of the Affair,” “Magnolia”
2. Judi Dench (2001): “Iris,” “The Shipping News”
3. Julianne Moore (2002): “Far From Heaven,” “The Hours”

Patricia Clarkson’s portrayals of complicated women “who aren’t 25” in indie films, pay-tv and streaming series, and on stage have offered her a rewarding second act to a career in which she once felt trapped in suburban mom roles.
Speaking to Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge as part of the magazine’s Critics Corner video interview series at the Karlovy Vary film fest, the actress said she was amazed to see Czech crowds thronging to her master class. “I thought there would be four people here,” Clarkson confessed.
The actress, at the fest to receive a Crystal Globe for artistic contribution to world cinema, said she feels the confidence to pick and choose her roles and even to take a break once in while, after decades of steady work – not all of it artistically rewarding.

Poor Emily Blunt. After a stellar 2018 and earning Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for “Mary Poppins Returns” and “A Quiet Place,” she failed to get an Oscar nomination Tuesday for either, becoming just the second double SAG nominee to go 0-2 with the academy.
Blunt follows in the dubious footsteps of Helen Mirren, who didn’t convert her SAG Awards bids for her 2015 films “Woman in Gold” and “Trumbo” into Oscar nominations. But at least Mirren was already a four-time Oscar nominee and a one-time winner; Blunt is still waiting for her maiden bid.

With her Sharp Objects co-star, Amy Adams, wiping away tears in the audience, Patricia Clarkson delivered a characteristically classy acceptance speech after her Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series Or Movie Made for Television.
Showing her southern Gothic roots (at least geographically) that helped her memorably bring to life matriarch Adora Crellin, Clarkson got emotional as she moved beyond the obvious list of thank-yous “This really is for my extraordinary mother and father,” the New Orleans-area native said. “I share this with you, mom and dad, in New Orleans. Cheers.”
Clarkson, who also brought plenty of arch wit to the role, showed her dry humor as well during the minute-long speech. After telling Adams, “I owe you so very much,” she added a salute to director Jean-Marc Vallée. “You demanded everything of me except sex, which is...

For Peter Hedges, the opioid epidemic hits close to home. “I lost a close friend to overdose,” he reveals. “My favorite actor ever overdosed and died, and my family nearly lost a close relative.” Though he knew he wanted to tackle the subject in a film, he “didn’t know what story to tell.” But after “a period of intense research that lasted several years” he finally arrived at the plot for “Ben is Back.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Hedges above.

“She’ll never leave me,” reveals Patricia Clarkson in our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above) about how the character she brought to life in “Sharp Objects” still affects her to this day. “That’s who we are as actors, we all have certain characters that never leave us.”
In HBO’s acclaimed limited series, the two-time Emmy winner, Tony nominee and Oscar and Golden Globe nominee plays controlling matriarch Adora Crellin to daughters Camille (Amy Adams) and Amma (Eliza Scanlen). It was an especially challenging role for Clarkson, as the series confronts familial trauma and abuse and the difficult relationships between a damaged mother and her two very different daughters.

Since becoming a mother in 2004, Julia Roberts has only starred in a handful of movies. This 2000 Best Actress Oscar winner (“Erin Brockovich”) has often opted for less time-consuming supporting roles or voice work. That she agreed to headline Peter Hedges‘ intense family drama “Ben is Back” tells you that the project is something special. Here are five reasons why her tour-de-force performance as a mother determined to keep her drug-addicted son from relapsing will bring her back to the Academy Awards.

Long fascinated by emotionally complex family dynamics and the way the smallest of events can shatter a clan, writer/director Peter Hedges explored those themes to great effect in such films as “Pieces of April,” “Dan in Real Life,” and as the writer of “What‘s Eating Gilbert Grape?” Hedges’ returns to this well in “Ben is Back,” focusing on the plights of a family torn by the torment of drug addiction and a mother’s unequivocal love for her son in the face of his on-again-off-again relapses.

We're only two episodes into HBO's Sharp Objects, but we only needed the premiere to get us seriously hooked. Based on the eponymous novel by Gillian Flynn, the miniseries follows journalist Camille Preaker as she returns to her hometown to investigate the murders of two preteen girls. Returning home is never easy, and Preaker encounters various reminders of that fact during her investigation - namely her mother, Adora Crellin. Adora is played by actress Patricia Clarkson, and her casting is a mark of true genius by the minds behind Sharp Objects.
Clarkson's portrayal of Adora is beautifully intricate in a way that only true character actors can achieve. It's easy to go campy with the "controlling mom and Southern belle" trope, but Adora is dangerous rather than shrill; brutal rather than ostentatious. It's obvious that she's a broken woman, though she hides it behind the facade of...
