Actor Clint Eastwood helped make the Dirty Harry franchise one of the most iconic series of action films in cinema. But at one point Eastwood was looking for another action franchise to own.

Eastwood’s Dirty Harry series only helped further the actor’s legacy back in the day. But initially, he hoped to have another separate franchise as equally lucrative under his belt with a similar personality to Dirty Harry. In an attempt to replicate the film’s success, Eastwood allegedly went to famous writer Elmore Leonard for help. Apart from his novels, Leonard was also known for penning movies. He wrote features like Charles Bronson’s Mr. Majestyk, which was initially pitched to Eastwood. It was also inspired by his own book The Big Bounce.

Ryan O’Neal is dead at the age of 82 after years of health struggles. His son Patrick announced the news on Instagram.
O’Neal was one of the true heartthrobs of the New Hollywood era, making many who saw him in “Love Story,” “What’s Up Doc?,” “Barry Lyndon,” and “The Driver” swoon. He also was much more than a pretty face, showing a capacity to let the great directors of the era mold him into something so much more powerful than his looks. And his life was defined in some ways, also, by heartbreak and misfortune: the loss of his great love Farrah Fawcett in 2009, the years-long legal troubles of his son Redmond, the rupture of his relationship with son Griffin, and fraught connection to his daughter Tatum. He was a prickly icon, someone whose public statements and demeanor defied people to like him. But the films he leaves behind...

Ryan O’Neal, the boyish leading man who kicked off an extraordinary 1970s run in Hollywood with his Oscar-nominated turn as the Harvard preppie Oliver in the legendary romantic tearjerker Love Story, has died. He was 82.
O’Neal died Friday, his son Patrick O’Neal, a sportscaster with Bally Sports West in Los Angeles, reported on Instagram. He had been diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2001 and with prostate cancer in 2012.
“As a human being, my father was as generous as they come,” Patrick wrote. “And the funniest person in any room. And the most handsome clearly, but also the most charming. Lethal combo. He loved to make people laugh. It’s pretty much his goal. Didn’t matter the situation, if there was a joke to be found, he nailed it. He really wanted us laughing. And we did all laugh. Every time. We had fun. Fun in the sun.”

With Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, the charismatic Glen Powell has been offered a plum opportunity to shape his image into something more complicated and often poignant. Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a philosophy professor at the University of New Orleans who moonlights as a pretend hitman in sting operations. That premise may seem far-fetched, but the script gives a logical pathway for Johnson’s nerdy tech hobby to seem appealing to the Nola police department’s surveillance teams. And, also, this story mostly really happened.
What remains unbelievable, especially to Gary’s surveillance teammates, is just how good he is at playing a seasoned contract killer. Gary develops disguises tailored to his mark’s idea of a hitman, inhabits that role until the incriminating cash is exchanged, then settles down at home with his cats Id and Ego—turns out, he teaches psychology classes as well—and a microwaveable meal.

Yeah, I just picked it up off the nightstand. But I’ve been there, to the museum in Amsterdam. Do you have a favourite Van Gogh painting?
Not particularly, Van Gogh. I’m more of a Dali fan.
Very trippy.
Have you been to any of the galleries in London while you’ve been here?
I went to go see the Basquiat show, over at the Barbican.
There was a good documentary on Basquiat recently.

There is good news and bad news about Kriv Stenders’ neo-noir film Kill Me Three Times. The good news is that it’s fun to see Simon Pegg enjoying himself as a real scumbag of a hitman. The bad news is that if you’ve seen a handful of crime movies in the last 20 years, you’ve already seen most of what Kill Me Three Times has to offer.
Simon Pegg plays Charlie Wolfe, a contract killer we meet as he chases down and executes some poor sap in the desert. He’s hired to take out Alice (Alice Braga, Predators) for reasons not made clear at first, but when he shows up to do the job he discovers that she’s already been rubbed out by married dentists Nathan (Sullivan Stapleton, 300: Rise of an Empire) and Lucy (Theresa Palmer, Warm Bodies). On March 18th, VH1 is bringing you Erin and Sara Foster‘s Barely Famous, a mocku-docu-something-reality show about two sisters who definitely do not want to be on a reality show.
Take a look at the supertrailer below, and get a feel for not only the harsh look at reality shows you’ll be getting, but also several of the guest stars who will be appearing on the show.
It’s not that this general idea hasn’t come our way before, including in the form of shows like Burning Love, but I don’t think we’ve had quite as blunt an effort that specifically took on the “We’re just famous,” sub-genre.
Potentially, this one could be hilarious, and I’ll let you know a little closer to the air date, but let me know what you think about the idea.

I made my Slim Pickings joke last week and this week, I got nothing. Things are a bit better this week anyway with a nice mixture of the new, the old and the quirky independent that has gone straight to VOD.
I imagine things will pick up massively into December as Now TV adds Iron Man 3 and Oz: The Great and Powerful and then the other service providers try and compete.
For now though below are the films to look out for this week, Enjoy!
Mama (2013)
The latest horror film to borrow Guillermo Del Toro’s name in order to present itself, is this ghost story from director Andres Muschietti. Jessica Chastain plays a woman who reluctantly becomes foster-mother to her partners’ two nieces after they are recovered from living feral in the wilderness. According to IMDb, close to 40 films and TV shows have Elmore Leonard’s name attached, some as creator, some as screenwriter, but about three-quarters because they’re based on one of his novels or short stories. Leonard, who died August 20 of complications following a stroke, didn’t like most of them. Actually, that’s something of an understatement. He hated most of them, the distinction being he hated some more than others.
Leonard had a love/hate thing going with Hollywood. He loved taking movie money, but usually hated what Hollywood did with his material. He went public with his revulsion over Burt Reynold’s thoroughly lousy 1985 adaptation of his novel Stick, and while I don’t know this for a fact, I’m sure he was shaking his head – at least at first — when Quentin Tarantino cast Pam Grier in Jackie Brown (1997) to play what had been a white character in his source novel,...

Crime writer known for Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Hombre whose work served as a barometer of modern America
When Elmore Leonard's Stick was published in Britain in 1984, one newspaper called it "a fine first novel". At almost 60, the author would have been amused at such an accolade; it was, in fact, his 21st novel, and Leonard, who has died aged 87, had been selling his fiction regularly, occasionally to Hollywood. But the genres in which he chose to work often failed to attract serious critical attention: westerns first, then crime novels set in the contemporary urban hinterlands.
Westerns as a literary genre still lack respectability, but the craft and energy of Leonard's crime novels, which include Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Labrava, eventually made them impossible to ignore. Still, recognition came late: only in 1992 did the Mystery Writers of America grant him its highest accolade, the Grand Master Edgar.

When the late Elmore Leonard began writing fiction in the early Nineteen-Fifties, Westerns ruled the roost, so most of his early heroes wore cowboy hats. When this great American writer, who died Tuesday at 87, went with the flow in 1969, and switched to writing urban thrillers (with the twice-filmed "The Big Bounce"), the change wasn't a wrenching one. He didn't ask his characteristically watchful and laconic heroes to change much more than their hats when they relocated from the deserts of the Southwest to the mean streets of Detroit and Miami. The best-known current incarnation of the Leonard hero, Timothy Olyphant's Marshall Raylan Givens on the FX series "Justified," brings the iconography full circle. He is a contemporary lawman who has traded in his six shooter for a Glock but still favors the hat and the boots and remains calm even when engineering a shoot out. Both Olyphant's portrayal and...

Elmore Leonard has died at the age of 87, leaving us with millions of already well-worn copies of novels and short story collections. He was a raw talent with a knack for delivering stark, bloody drama that worked strongly both on the page and on the screen. If you don’t already have the physical copies on your shelf, there are more than a few options (some of them free) for streaming Leonard’s adaptations online. 3:10 to Yuma (1957 and 2007) One of two westerns from Leonard that came out that year (the other being The Tall T), it helped solidify him as a go-to for tough guys and became a kind of icon in its own right. It tells the story of a struggling farmer who joins a posse attempting to take the brutal, captured outlaw Ben Wade to the closest town with a railway station. The goal is to turn him over to the authorities on their...

An adaptation of the novel The Swtich is on the way with John Hawkes, Yasmin Bey (formerly Mos Def), Will Forte, Isla Fisher and Tim Robbins starring, but author Elmore Leonard won't be around to see one more of his books hit the big screen. The New York Times reports that the author behind such novels as Get Shorty, Out of Sight, The Big Bounce, Jackie Brown and 3:10 to Yuma, all of which became major motion pictures, has passed away at his home in Michigan at the age of 87. But despite his books serving as inspiration for so many films, Leonard was never really a big fan of the adaptations themselves. Read on. In fact, as the newspaper points out, Leonard would often pan the film adaptations with great comic effect, even the more popular and successful films like Get Short and Out of Sight. The paper recalls, "His first novel,...

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III Written and Directed by: Roman Coppola Starring: Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Patricia Arquette, Katheryn Winnick, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aubrey Plaza, Dermot Mulroney When Roman Coppola's new film A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III was first announced, Charlie Sheen's firing from Two and a Half Men and his subsequent public meltdown were still fresh in our minds. The movie was poised to capitalize on the situation by having him play a fictional character in a similar predicament, potentially adding an interesting meta layer to the story. However, now that the movie has been released a year and half later, things have changed. Sheen has returned to a successful TV career with Anger Management, "Winning!" is no longer a thing that people say, and most of the relevance that this movie might have once had now seems all but lost.

The best novelists create a world around the reader. You can feel it bubbling up in irrepressible invention. Two 80s remakes and a bird-watching movie weren't able to knock down Real Steel, which held well enough to repeat in first place this weekend. Footloose wasn't far behind, but also wasn't all that impressive, while The Thing missed the mark and The Big Year bombed. Overall box office was off around 33 percent from the same frame last year when Jackass 3-D led with $50.3 million. Real Steel dipped 40 percent to an estimated $16.3 million. That hold isn't quite as strong as Secretariat or Red from last October, but it's still solid in its own right. Through 10 days in theaters, the Hugh Jackman robot boxing movie has earned $51.7 million. Footloose was a close second with an estimated $16.1 million. It debuted below Stomp the Yard ($21.8 million and the first two Step Up movies ($20.7 million and $18.9 million), but did end up slightly above Step Up 3-D ($15.8 million). It also had lower initial attendance than the original Footloose,...

Gossip Girl‘s Katie Cassidy has been tapped to join the cast of writer-producer Charles Matthau‘s Elmore Leonard adaptation Freaky Deaky. [Variety]
Cassidy will play ex-hippie Robin Abbott, just released from prison after blowing up a police car. After launching a new career writing historical romance novels, she hooks up with her ex-boyfriend, to be played by Brendan Fraser. The two of them hatch a plot to con an alcoholic movie mogul out of millions of dollars. Their scheme will likely be repeatedly thwarted by Matt Dillon, who will play an Lapd bomb squad officer who gets wise to the couple’s plans.
An older IMDb page for the project lists Sienna Miller in the Cassidy role and Matthau as the project’s director, as well as his producing and writing duties. Given Cassidy’s casting and the recent news that William H. Macy has sadly left the project, the...

After a few years of doing guest roles on television, O’Neal became a bankable star after Peyton Place's popular run. The Big Bounce (1969) was his first starring role in a film, but he’ll be remembered as bursting through to superstardom for Love Story (1970).
Everyone’s seen Paper Moon (1973) and everyone should watch it again. (Its streaming on Instant Netflix, so no excuses!) His collaborations with Peter Bogdonavich coincide with the peak of his career. Look at his filmography in the 1970’s. It is an amazing assembly of films!

The Scorecard Review Movie Awards: Best of the Decade (Almost) – Complete Results
The decade is over (and has been for a year). Now, we finally know what The Scorecard Review readers believe were the best of the best in the Tsr Movie Awards. There were 501 total voters who voted. Yes, I know it’s not technically a decade. We’ve been doing The Scorecard Review Movie Awards for eight years and decided it was time for a “Best of,” hence the “(Almost).”
If there is one thing we learned, it was The Decade of the Ledger, Heath Ledger. Ellen Page, Lord of the Rings, Meryl Streep, Avatar and Leonardo DiCaprio all had their moments as well. I will offer complete commentary on each individual category so stay tuned for that.
Look for The 9th Annual Tsr Movie Awards in February 2011.

A Us/UK co-production Psych 9 is a terrifying journey into the mind of a disturbed woman and centres on a near-abandoned hospital that has been plagued by a spate of killings. Taking a night job at the hospital, Roslyn (Sara Foster) experiences a series of disturbing events connected to a string of local murders by a killer dubbed the NightHawk. She also discovers a chilling therapy room belonging to psychologist Dr Irvin Clement (Cary Elwes). When done right, a movie based on an Elmore Leonard book can be utterly fantastic. Sadly, however, for every hit, there tends to be a miss. Jackie Brown: Good, The Big Bounce: Bad. Get Shorty: Good, Be Cool: Bad. Let's hope the newest venture into Leonard's literary work turns out on the right side. Deadline reports that William H. Macy, who is currently promoting his newest film, Dirty Girl, at the Toronto International Film Festival, has signed on to star in Freaky Deaky, an adaptation written and to be directed by Charlie Matthau. Set in the 1970s, Macy will play Woody Ricks, an alcoholic millionaire who works with a group of radicals who "use their skills for blowing stuff up for entrepreneurial purposes." Production is scheduled to begin next year. When you take into account Leonard's flair and style, it shouldn't be surprising that so many...

What do the films Get Shorty, Out of Sight, Jackie Brown, Be Cool, The Big Bounce and Killshot all have in common? Well I'll tell you - they have all been adapted from books written by Elmore Leonard... and now there's another to add to the list, as Walter Matthau's son Charles Matthau (Her Minor Thing) is writing and directing an adaptation of Freaky Deaky, and William H. Macy (Fargo) is attached to star.
It's not clear yet which role in the crime thriller Macy will take on, but a synopsis of the book goes as follows: Leonard starts and ends his latest page turner with a bang, and between explosions we meet a vivid group of characters who are mainly veterans of the youth rebellion of the 1960s. Chief among them are Chris Mankowski, 38-year-old Detroit police sergeant, newly transferred from the bomb squad to sex crimes; Woody Ricks,...

The books of Elmore Leonard have been source material for a wide variety of films good and bad, from Out of Sight, Rum Punch (aka Jackie Brown) and Get Shorty, to losers like Be Cool, Killshot and The Big Bounce. Now one more is being added to the pile, as Walter Matthau's son Charles Matthau is preparing to direct an adaptation of Freaky Deaky, with William H. Macy starring. Variety broke the initial project news, and Deadline told of Macy's casting. I can't even begin to call how this one might land. I haven't seen Charles Matthau's other directorial effort Her Minor Thing, so I've got no basis to even guess here. (He's also writing the script.) And with the Leonard adaptation track record, which is pretty much as 50/50 as the mentions above would indicate, I'm not going to hazard a guess. Freaky Deaky is one of the...

Elmore Leonard’s work can be a tough cookie to crack on screen. For every great example (Out of Sight), there’s a failure (The Big Bounce), and the field in between is littered with the good to the dodgy. Now Walter Matthau’s son Charlie will be hoping to score a winner, wrangling William H Macy to star in Freaky Deaky.Written by Leonard in 1988, Deaky follows a pair of former radical types who specialised in bomb making reuniting for a big payday job. And then there’s the close-to-retirement bomb squad officer who has to tack them down.Matthau, who also penned the script, isn’t exactly known for his crime drama work: so far his output has been limited to virginity-centric rom-com Her Minor Thing starring Estrella Warren (which, weirdly, this writer caught two minutes of on cable just a few days ago) and upcoming jazz musical Baby-o,...

Elmore Leonard is one of the best crime writers ever. Period. He's also written some damn good westerns in his 60-year career. His dialogue is probably the best single aspect about anything he does, and even at 84, he's still crankin' 'em out at about a novel a year. Not bad for a guy who handwrites everything.
His movies have been hit or miss. Get Shorty, Out of Sight and 3:10 to Yuma are among the good; Be Cool, Stick, and The Big Bounce are among the bad. Then there's Jackie Brown, which comes from his novel Rum Punch. There's a prequel to that book, The Switch, which is now being tranformed into a movie.
Worst Previews reports that Daniel Schecter is writing it and that Michael Siegel, who previously produced Be Cool, back in that role. Quentin Tarantino? Not yet, and probably not at all, though the producer apparently would like Qt's input.

Although Charlie Sheen and wife Brooke Mueller no longer live under the same roof, the troubled couple is not yet planning to file a divorce paper. The two "are currently living apart but are trying to figure things out," a representative for the "Two and a Half Men" star confirmed to Us Magazine.
"They are still married. And have no plans for divorce," the rep further claimed. Meanwhile, their twin kids spend their time with both Charlie and Brooke, the rep said before stating that "Brooke does not have full custody of the kids."
Beside affirming that no separation has been planned, the Bob Rogers Jr. of "The Big Bounce" also had his rep telling People that he and Brooke "are trying to work things out." His rep said, "It's better if they don't reside under the same roof. There are no plans for either party to end their marriage.

I’ve been taking the bus to the festival. Sure, I could sit here and describe the things I am seeing during the bus ride like McM (Mole Cheek Man) or .. well, I should describe him. He had this big mole on his cheek. Not so much wide, as it was tall. I couldn’t help but think about shaving. He had some significant stubble, so you know he’s stuck shaving twice a day at the least. How. How? How has he avoided the temptation of just taking the razor and slicing it off? I was stuck on that thought for a solid 25 minutes. Morbid? Not enough sleep? Sure, these are possible excuses for this train of thought, but really I just want a straight-edge and two minutes with that mole. Apparently this is...

Brooke Mueller has given further details on the domestic violence allegedly done by his actor husband Charlie Sheen on Christmas Day. According to police affidavit released on Monday, December 28, 44-year-old Charlie pinned his wife on a bed and put a knife to her throat when she asked him for a divorce.
At the time, the "Two and a Half Men" star even threatened to kill his wife if she told anyone about his bad behavior. Based on the affidavit, Sheen told his wife during their fight, "You better be in fear. If you tell anybody, I'll kill you. Your mother's money means nothing, I have ex-police I can hire who know how to get the job done and they won't leave any trace."
Upon learning that herself was in danger, shaky and tearful Mueller called 911 for help. In a tape obtained by People magazine, she stated, "My husband had me with a knife.
