The recent critical acclaim for HBO’s The Last of Us and the box office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie have sparked a wave of optimism. Could this be a turning point for video game adaptations?
Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller in The Last of Us
For decades, such adaptations have struggled to capture the essence of beloved games and translate them effectively to the cinematic medium. Despite Hollywood’s persistent efforts to turn popular video game characters into cinematic heroes, the vast majority of these adaptations have fallen flat.

If you’ve been keeping up with The Test of Time, you have probably learned what the rules are in terms of what we tackle. Those rules, of course, are that there are no rules whatsoever and we cover whatever sounds good or we think would be an interesting topic. In the Mouth of Madness (watch it Here) came out in Italy in late 1994 and that means, gulp, that movie is now 30 years old. It came during an interesting time in the master of horrors career when he was running flop after flop and being disappointed by studios interference and stars that weren’t willing to be true collaborators. It’s the ending of a loose trilogy and in some people’s estimation his last great film. Is In the Mouth of Madness a tale that stands the Test of Time, or should it be put in the bargain bin...

Ah the early 2000s. The Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube were the hottest videogame consoles around. Limp Bizkit, Smash Mouth, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, and Usher were ruling the airwaves and little did we know we would be blessed with tons of horror video game movie adaptations as well. Granted, some weren’t that great, looking at you House of the Dead, Doom and Alone in the Dark. But there also were some fun films from this genre…Silent Hill and Resident Evil. At the time, both weren’t exactly loved by critics, but they did have their fans and have each spawned sequels. Today, we’re looking at the first Resident Evil (watch it Here) on this episode of Horror Revisited.
Let’s start back in January 1997. Resident Evil had already released on the Playstation One to critical fame as well as being adored by gamers. A German Production...

Historically, horror movies have tended to have lower budgets than films in other genres. A large part of this is probably due to the origins of the genre. Slasher films become something of a cultural phenomenon in the 1970s, when movies like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" and "Halloween" in many ways revolutionized the film industry. Such films were usually made on the cheap and relied on clever practical effects and location shooting to deliver the onscreen goods. But what really made these films so influential is that from these modest origins, they killed at the box office, revolutionizing the genre as we know it today.
Since the 1970s, movies of all genres have gotten more expensive to make, and not all of these films can earn back their production costs. While horror has remained an extremely popular genre both in the States and worldwide, scary movies are just as...

Video games have been a huge part of popular culture for decades now, particularly following the home console boom in the '80s. In all that time, few games have endured quite like "Tetris" has. It's become an absolute staple of this era, with people playing the simple yet addicting game for hours on end on the original Game Boy, the Nes, or at their nearest arcade. So, perhaps it's only fitting that, in an era when video game movies are finally starting to click in a real way, this beloved title would finally get the big screen treatment. No, it's not an adaptation. Rather, it's more of a biopic in the form of director Jon S. Baird's "Tetris," which arrives on Apple TV+ this week. In a roundabout way, it instantly earns its place as one of the greatest video game movies to date.

Video game adaptations: one of cinema’s most hated-on subgenres. Whenever another beloved controllable franchise is announced for moviegoing treatment, eyes roll. Critics quiver. Visions of Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne or Uwe Boll’s crimes against both gamersphere credibility and audience standards montage a hard-fast argument for such scoffs.
Fantastical play-alongs turned theatrical try-hards have long become the butt of many online jokes, and while titles such as Detective Pikachu and both Sonic the Hedgehog films disprove “cursed” trends, I’d argue that not all video game adaptations are created equal.
Horror video game adaptations maketh the best video game adaptations, and that’s by an Arklay country mile.

Boll is marking his return after seven years with an action thriller titled ‘12 Hours’.
German director Uwe Boll is making his filmmaking comeback with two features in the works.
After a seven-year hiatus from the industry, that included setting up a restaurant in Canada, Boll is marking his return with an action thriller titled 12 Hours. The feature follows a man who returns with his family to Cape Town, South Africa, for his mother’s funeral, only for his whole family to get kidnapped, leaving him with 12 hours to kill five people to get his family back.

Among many other things, the Game Boy line of handheld hardware legitimized the concept of gaming on the go. The quality of the original Game Boy hardware itself inspired developers everywhere to pursue ambitious new ideas that changed the handheld gaming landscape forever. Of course, just because the Game Boy legitimized the handheld gaming scene doesn’t mean that there weren’t plenty of developers looking to use that legitimization as an excuse to get weird with things.
Yes, while so many of us spent our years with the Game Boy line playing classics like Tetris and Pokémon, those who ventured off the beaten path may have discovered a few oddities that defied logic. Whether those games got you through long car rides and waiting rooms is something only you can answer. What I can tell you is that anyone who played some of the wildest and weirdest Game Boy games likely never forgot them.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Fernando Díaz’s Machaco Films and Roxana Ramos’ Aramos Cine have partnered to set up a joint venture: La Puerta Roja, focused on horror and fantasy movies as well as working with prominent genre directors from Ibero-America. Both companies are based in Buenos Aires.
The idea sprang from Machaco and Aramos’s co-production partnership on Demian Rugna’s next project “When Evil Lurks.” Machaco had already produced Rugna’s “Terrified,” awarded at the Austin Fantastic Fest among a flurry of international kudos, and whose remake rights were acquired by Guillermo del Toro.
A cinema-tv production company, Machaco Films was founded over 20 years ago. Productions include Fernando Díaz’s “Soul’s Square,” and Rossana Díaz Costa’s “Trip to Timbuktu” and “A World for Julius,” based on Alfredo Bryce Echenique’s same-titled novel.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Yes, folks, you read that header correctly, the original House of the Dead and its sequel are officially getting the remake treatment.
News of Sega’s classic arcade games being revived first made headlines last week via Polish website Graczpospolita, which stipulated that studio Forever Entertainment would be overseeing the series’ return to the limelight. The developer has since confirmed via social media that it has in fact signed an agreement “regarding remakes of the games,” though sadly, not the platforms on which the pair will appear.
“No platforms or release dates have been confirmed,” reads the statement, adding “unfortunately we can’t say anything more for now. Please keep fingers crossed for us and follow our official channels.” That final sentence is a strange one, for sure. Uwe Boll is the quintessential go-to when talking about the worst directors working today, rightfully being called the modern-day Ed Wood. Between movies like Alone In The Dark, House Of The Dead, Bloodrayne and In The Name Of The King the man has more movies that have gotten under 10 percent on Rotten Tomatoes than any filmmaker should, and he’s become the scorn of movie bloggers everywhere. If you are a horror fan from the early-2000s, you’re probably familiar with the infamous Uwe Boll. The filmmaker rose to prominence in the decade as the go-to guy for low-budget horror adaptations, with films like “House of the Dead,” “Alone in the Dark,” and “BloodRayne.” However, after a string of bad reviews (more like vicious reviews), the director decided to steer into controversy with a string of films that were meant to shock, offend, and generally piss people off.

Before we roll into August, we have one last round of July home media releases to look forward to, even if this week is one of the lightest weeks I’ve seen all year, with only three horror titles making their way home on Tuesday. Scream Factory is giving Piranha II: The Spawning a Blu-ray release, Vinegar Syndrome has resurrected The House of the Dead on Blu-ray, and Warner Archive has given Village of the Damned (1960) an HD overhaul as well.

Video game movies have a bad reputation because, well, there are very few that we’d call “good.” At their best, at least so far, the big screen versions of video games have been fun and trashy entertainment. At their worst, however, they’re as bad as anything else we’ve ever seen in a movie theater.
So let’s rank ‘em!
41. “Postal” (2008)
The pinnacle of director Uwe Boll‘s string of horrendous video game movies (he has five that qualify for this list by getting theatrical releases somewhere), but to be fair it’s probably still a better work of art than the game it’s based on.
40. “Alone in the Dark” (2005)
“House of the Dead” briefly tricked us into thinking Uwe Boll was a camp master, but his next video game movie, “Alone in the Dark,” was such an incomprehensible slog that I have never been able to...

Uwe Boll, the filmmaker who has brought us a slew of films that a lot of people think are terrible such as BloodRayne, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, Far Cry, House of the Dead, and more, is completely pissed off at Dwayne Johnson's big screen adaptation of the classic video game Rampage. He's so raging mad that he is threatening to sue Warner Bros.
So, why is Uwe Boll so pissed off? Because he also made a movie called Rampage. It has nothing to do with this movie, but the fact that it has the same title has made him go crazy!
Fuck this new fake Rampage movie. Uwe Boll is going to sue Warner Bros. asshole. Totally serious. Will update soon.

Zombie shooter sim House Of The Dead is returning to arcades, as Sega announces Scarlet Dawn...
There's nothing quite like a House Of The Dead arcade game. Try as they might, the many console ports of the franchise haven't been able to replicate the magic of a true House Of The Dead arcade experience.

It seems that Sega might just agree with that sentiment as they've just announced that they are developing a brand-new House Of The Dead arcade game.
It's called House Of The Dead: Scarlet Dawn, and you can play it at Sega Akihabara Building 3 in Tokyo from January 19th to January 21st. Sega has not announced any plans to expand the availability of this game beyond that initial limited release.

The annual Awesome Games Done Quickly event gives speedrunners everywhere a chance to showcase how fast they can beat some of the best games ever made. From on-rails shooter House Of The Dead came the finest typing tutor videogame of all time...
When Sega first released The House Of The Dead into arcades in 1996, and subsequently onto the much-loved Dreamcast console a year or two later, there were few signs that it would give mutate and give Mavis Beacon a run for its money. The original game – and its sequels - was an on-rails light gun shooter. You pointed your pretend gun at the screen, you shot zombies, stress melted away almost as fast as the coins left your pocket. Until it got to the really hard bits and boss battles. Subsequent sequels would follow a similar pattern, until enthusiasm for zombie-blasting lightgun games seemed to peter out.
But before it petered out, it took one of the strangest left turns in videogaming history (I don’t say that lightly), as House Of The Dead...

Today we learned that one my favorite television actors, Dominic West, is joining the cast of the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise. You probably remember him best from The Wire, where he played Jimmy McNulty, the protagonist of the show and a character with many personal and intriguing demons. He stamped his mark on society with this character because The Wire is considered one of the best written shows of all time, and the last time I remember West was in the only decent Punisher movie ever made where he played the iconic Jigsaw.
According to THR, West will be playing Lord Richard Croft, the father of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. This role was originally played by Jon Voight in the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies a decade ago. We know Voight is Jolie's father in "real life," and while West can't claim that over the current...

Super Mario Bros. Street Fighter. Mortal Kombat Annihilation. House Of The Dead. Not only are these terrible videogame movies, there are some of the worst movies, period. And the list goes on! In a move that hardly makes a lick of sense from any perspective, Uwe Boll announced that he’s retiring from the world film.
Now, this is a strange turn of events for many reasons, but it takes on some new spins because what he said is –
The market is dead, you don’t make any money anymore on movies because the DVD and Blu Ray market worldwide has dropped 80 per cent in the last three years. That is the real reason; I just cannot afford to make movies. I can’t go back to student filmmaking because I have made so many movies in my life, and I can’t make cheaper and cheaper movies at my age. It’s a shame. I would be happy to make movies but it is just not financially profitable.

If you're familiar with Uwe Boll then you know he's a filmmaker who has made a lot of notoriously bad films in his career. He's mostly known for his terrible video game adaptations. Some of the films that he's made include House of the Dead, Bloodrayne, Far Cry, Rampage, Assault on Wall Street, and In the Name of the King.
Well, for those of you who enjoyed trashing the director and his films, you'll be happy to know that he's announced his retirement. While speaking with Metro, Boll explained that he can no longer afford to make the movies that he wants to make.

So apparently Uwe Boll, director of such classics as House Of The Dead, Alone In The Dark, and Postal, will be quitting the movie business. Yay! Now, wait, that's a bit harsh. As a lover of bad movies, it's a shame we'll be losing one of the greats. And, for what it's worth, it did seem like he wanted to make good movies and had a lot of passion. This is... Read More...

Director Uwe Boll is best known for his many poorly-received video game film adaptations — “House of the Dead,” “Alone in the Dark,” “BloodRayne” etc. — as well as the numerous negative reviews he has received over the years. But now, Boll confirms that he has retired from filmmaking and his latest film “Rampage: President Down,” the third film in his “Rampage” series, will be his last. In an interview with Metro Toronto, Boll cites market failures and an inability to make a profit as his primary reasons.

The Game Boy Advance may not have stuck around for very long, but it still had a great lineup of games. Here are the 25 best!
The Game Boy Advance had a brief yet beautiful heyday. Released in the summer of 2001 as the long-awaited full-color successor to the Game Boy line, developers quickly filled the handheld’s library with perfect ports of 16-bit classics and new games that epitomized the best parts of the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis era.
But with the Sony PSP breathing down Nintendo’s neck, the company shifted focus to the Nintendo DS in 2004, just three years after the release of the Gba. Still, Gba games continued to trickle out in North America until 2008. Many of these games still hold up remarkably well.

Jennifer Lawrence fights on to the flawed denoument of an entertaining series with complex ideas about power and corruption
If The Hunger Games was Battle Royale, Catching Fire was Rollerball and Mockingjay – Part 1 was Broadcast News, then everything goes a bit Quantum of Solace in this hotchpotch final instalment. MJ2 picks up exactly where its predecessor left off, with Katniss Everdeen (girl on fire Jennifer Lawrence) nursing injuries inflicted upon her by the recently retrieved but still brainwashed Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). As rebel forces ready themselves for the last battle with President Snow (the silver-tongued Donald Sutherland), Julianne Moore’s Alma Coin starts to look less like a liberator than an ice queen in waiting, leaving Katniss wondering what – and for whom – she is fighting.

A virtual reality showcase isn't worth its salt these days unless it's making you drench your headset with scare sweat. So as Capcom's Kitchen became the word of mouth hit of Los Angeles' E3 expo this past summer, at Paris Games Week that baton has been passed to Vrwerx's Paranormal Activity demo for Htc's Vive. And it's horrible.
Effectively the Pt Vr we wished Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and director Guillermo Del Toro had been given the opportunity to make – they could have called it 'Ptsd' – it simulates a very normal looking house where not so normal things happen as you make your way down corridors laden with flickering lights and jump scares.
Yet while doors crash close and windows shatter, it's the feeling of dread that's nailed, using Vive's central control circle to edge ever forward whilst standing. And edging is very much the word – at one point...

From Citizen Kane to Pulp Fiction, the mainstays of the AFI’s Top 100 lists continue to dazzle us with their flawless casts, immaculate scripts and flamboyant direction. But enough with the critical adoration already.
Far more interesting, at least from the perspective of those of us who enjoy a good train wreck, is IMDb’s bottom 100, which is at least voted for by actual moviegoers. Unlike the AFI list, whose #1 changes once every fifty years or so, the bottom 100 is an ever-changing line-up with a common theme: every film is among the most tiresome pictures you’re ever likely to sit through.
It’s the natural home for all those backyard monster movies, bungled comedies and asinine kiddie flicks that stream for free on Amazon or Netflix, the Doa duds that were disowned by those who made them and will end up being parodied by Rifftrax.

German director Uwe Boll is famous for various things, mostly churning out terrible movies. Ten years ago his films somehow went theatrical - "Alone in the Dark," "House of the Dead," "Bloodrayne," etc.
Since then he's been mostly doing direct to video fare from "the "In the Name of the King" sequels to the revenge piece "Rampage" and its sequel "Rampage: Capital Punishment". Recently Boll took to crowdfunding to try and score $55,000 in additional funding to produce "Rampage 3".
With only a few days left to go though, he hasn't reached half his goal and he's upset about it - to the point that he's delivered a video diatribe slamming crowdfunding in general as well as other targets like Marvel movies before declaring "f--- you all" and saying "I have enough money to play golf for 'til I'm dead".
Naturally there's been a lot of attention garnered by the video...

Since most of you have much better things to do with your weekend than listen to Uwe Boll rant and rave about how Hollywood is “laughing at us” on a daily basis, you probably missed his YouTube meltdown/bitch-fest/publicity stunt this past weekend.
Chances are you haven’t seen Rampage (a rather decent film) or its sequel, so you probably had no idea that Boll is currently crowdfunding Rampage 3: No Mercy, and after going the indiegogo route (which failed miserably), Boll fled to Kickstarter hoping that a different contributing community could keep his Damn-the-man franchise running strong. Long story short, the campaign failed yet again, and now Uwe Boll has one statement for us all: “Fuck Yourself.”
Yup, Boll is shocked at how “amateur idiots collect money on that absurd website.” According to Boll, he’s got enough money to play golf until he’s dead, and he might as well,...

"Basically, my message is f*ck yourself." Uwe Boll has made quite a few shitty movies (House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark etc) - but, he's also made quite a few... less shitty movies (Assault On Wall Street, Rampage, Darfur) that he is clearly very proud of. That's all well and good, but Mr. Boll evidently believes these underrated masterpieces to be vastly superior to the "Marvel Avengers bullshit dirt" type stuff us "geeks and idiots" are consuming on a regular basis instead of pouring money into his Kickstarter campaign. The German director has posted the below vids to his Youtube page, and in them he vents his frustration at not managing to raise the requisite cash needed to complete what would surely be his magnum opus, Rampage 3: No Mercy. He also takes the opportunity to make digs at the likes of Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr.,...

He said: "It's so pissing me off how fake that business is, but also how the young people of today falling in the f**king trap, because they're all stupid. Like wake the f**k up!
"Iron Man is not existing. Avengers are not existing. Because they are all f**king retarded idiots.
"And Robert Downey Jr. and all them people are idiots. Not idiots, they just grab the money. And they're laughing their asses off that the people pay money to that stupid, absurd s**t that they are shooting, like Captain America and all that completely crap.

I can now safely say it will be my lifelong dream to now see a movie about “some retarded wizard in the forest”. That was just one of the many great moments in this ironic outburst from notoriously awful director Uwe Boll (Blubberella, Postal, BloodRayne, Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead).
Boll is upset (you might say) about his ill attempt at a Kickstarter campaign for something called Rampage 3.
The video was accompanied by a message saying:
never will do crowdfunding again …. thanks to the few they supported rampage 3 -.-.—the rest can fuck their mothers incl. Kickstarter and all the idiots who talked me into bullshit like this
Promise?
(see his Kickstarter here).

But before we get into that, some brief history.
“Videogames can never be art.”
Despite the huge success of the gaming industry, which is now the most profitable form of entertainment, videogames are still seen an inferior art form. The late, great Roger Ebert famously kicked a beehive in 2010 when he proclaimed that “Videogames can never be art.”, Long story short,...
