Fierce, committed and above all, tough — these are the words that collaborators use to describe producer Robin O’Hara, a longtime fixture of the New York independent film scene, who died suddenly last week after complications from cancer treatment.
When O’Hara’s business and life partner Scott Macaulay of Forensic Films posted the sad news on Facebook last Wednesday, hundreds of prominent filmmakers, former crewmembers, and friends from across the independent film world offered an outpouring of condolences, remembrances, and testimonies about O’Hara’s importance in nurturing their art and their careers.
As “Saving Face” director Alice Wu wrote, “She was brilliant and mercurial and hilarious and terrifying. She gave no fucks — unless she did give a fuck — and then she gave everything. Anyone who has been lucky enough to be in her orbit never lets go. She pushed us all … and we became better people.”

Could there be a new trend in the field of feature-length documentaries? After last year’s Oscar winner Undefeated and the surprise box office success of this year’s Searching For Sugarman, are we seeing a spate of “feel-good” doc? They’ve had an unfair rep as dour and somber for quite some time now. Many film goers avoid them completely, feeling that they’re the movie equivalent of a dull lecture or homework (“shudder”)! But The Other Dream Team is a truly uplifting movie. And to quote one of the film’s subjects, “What a long, strange, trip it’s been”.

During those many dark days of occupation Lithuanians sought relief by indulging in their favorite national sport of basketball.

Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather knocked out Wbc welterwight champion Victor Ortiz in controversial fashion last night, throwing two mighty punches at a defenseless Ortiz after the champion had lowered his gloves following a pause in the fourth round. While boos rained down on Mayweather after the fight, he redirected his fury at Larry Merchant, HBO’s infamously meandering 80-year-old analyst, who persisted with questions about the fight’s climax that the new champ tried to sidestep. Finally, Mayweather exploded, “You never give me a fair shake. HBO needs to fire you. You don’t know sh– about boxing!”

Clifton Collins Jr. is set to take one of the title roles in the indie thriller The Hillside Strangler for director Chris Fisher. Shooting started earlier this week in Los Angeles. Strangler is loosely based on the events surrounding serial killers Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi (Collins), two cousins who were pimps and hustlers and who murdered 10 women in Los Angeles during a four-month period from 1977-78. The story is told from the point of view of a liberal psychiatrist (Brittany Daniel) who is brought in by the district attorney (Lake Bell) to determine whether Bianchi, a prime suspect who refuses to speak to police, is mentally capable of being interrogated. During the process, the psychiatrist uncovers more than she was looking for. Tom Wright and Michael Haggerty round out the cast, with other roles to be announced shortly, including the role of Buono. Fisher is producing through his Imperial Fish Co. from his own script along with Ash Shaw through his Silver Nitrate. Collins is repped by CAA, Steven Fenton at CMC and attorney David Krintzman. He most recently starred on the big screen in Roger Avary's The Rules of Attraction for Lions Gate Films. He next stars in the HBO film Undefeated opposite John Leguizamo, followed by Renny Harlin's Mindhunters for Dimension Films and Intermedia.

Moulin Rouge star John Leguizamo thinks he might be a "masochist" - because making his directing debut on boxing TV movie Undefeated was so difficult. The actor, whose labor of love will air on American cable network HBO next month, is currently finishing up postproduction on the flick, and he admits it has been a tiring experience. Leguizamo, who also stars in the movie, spent five years learning to box - and then had to choreograph and direct his own fight scenes. He says, "I put in six months of intensive training before we started shooting. Had I known how hard it would be, I would never have jumped in. I would have picked something a lot easier. I must be a masochistic man. The boxing was hard enough. It was really a tough gig."...
