He's currently starring in Star Wars: Rogue One, but there are some fascinating horrors to be found in Donnie Yen's back catalogue...
After his recent show-stealing turn in Rogue One, it felt like the right time to write a little about Donnie Yen, one of my favourite actors. From his incendiary breakthrough performance in Tiger Cage (1988) to the acclaimed Ip Man trilogy (2009 - 2016), Yen's body of work has earned him a reputation as one of the all-time greatest martial arts stars and action choreographers. His high-energy blend of fighting styles has been hugely influential on the genre both in the east and west, and his charismatic performances have kept him popular with fans for decades.
However, while his kung fu films have been written about extensively, there's not quite as much about his brief forays into my other favourite genre: horror. He's arguably been on...

Never thought it would see the light of day in the United States, but here it is! Patrick Leung and Corey Yuen’s Twins Effect II has been picked up for release by Well Go USA. By all accounts they are releasing it intact and entirely uncut, so we’ll forgive them (only just) the slightly bizaree decision, to rename it ‘Blade of Kings??’ Lucky were here to steer Hk action fans in the right direction! As well as the main draw of it starring Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan slugging in out on screen, the cast also includes Charlene Choi (Triple Tap, The Jade and the Pearl), Gillian Chung (Vampire Effect), and Hong Kong Film Award nominee for Best Newcomer Jaycee Chan (Jackie’ son) in the tale of a humble boy born to rule an empire who must first undertake his journey to claim his throne in the mythical land of Huadu.

Director: Dante Lam. Review: Chris Sawin. Jon Wan's (Jay Chou) life is turned upside down when his ex-girlfriend Ice (Bing Bai) is killed while they're out on a life threatening mission in Jordan. After waking up in the hospital, Jon is informed that not only is his career as a cop more than likely finished but a bullet is still lodged in his brain, is inoperable, and he will be completely paralyzed in two weeks time. Instead of staying in the hospital, Jon goes to visit his mother who tells him a twenty year old secret that he has a younger brother. Little does Jon realize that his brother Wan Yang (Nicolas Tse) has become one of the most wanted criminals of Malaysia. Now in a race against time, Jon is just trying to reunite his family as Yang attempts to figure out who ratted him out. Meanwhile, Jon's former...

Here are a few interesting and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles:
Untitled Grateful Dead Musical Project – Jerry Garcia's getting an Across the Universe makeover. The musician whose jam band helped kick start a cultural movement during the late 1960s will feature prominently in a planned musical that incorporates Grateful Dead tunes. Bruce Kaufman is packaging the project at ICM.
Mr. Vertigo – While Terry Gilliam hasn't given up hope on his Don Quixote film yet, he may have another windmill on the horizon. The filmmaker is adapting Paul Auster's novel about an orphaned boy who teaches himself how to levitate.
Bomb – Elle Fanning, Alessandro Nivola and Alice Englert have signed on to star in Sally Porter's latest project. Set in London's early '60s. Fanning plays a teenager whose dad, a charismatic writer (Nivola), take a shine to her friend. Filming begins in early February.
Other Desert Cities – Jon Robin Baitz' stage production at Lincoln Center is moving to tinseltown. The family drama about a retired couple in Palm Springs bracing for their daughter's surprise tell-all book is set up at Parkes/MacDonald Productions.
Ultimate Codebreak – Jackie Chan produces this action flick starring fellow Kung Fu star Donnie Yen. The film marks the duo's fourth collaboration together after Shanghai Knights, The Twins Effect II and Vampire Effect. Filming is expected to begin this month.

HONG KONG -- Production has started on Emperor Multimedia Group's sequel to its summer action hit Twins Effect. Twins Effect 2, starring Charlene Tsoi and Gillian Chung, who form the highly popular pop duo Twins, will mark the first EMG film to roll into production since Albert Lee took over the helm of EMG from Carl Chang in May. Despite the name, Twins Effect 2 will not strictly be a sequel to Twins Effect, which grossed $3.7 million. While the first installment -- directed by Dante Lam and Donnie Yen -- was about two young vampire hunters, the sequel will be a period martial arts piece with Choi and Chung as two warriors from an all-female country out to conquer men.
