The series was made on colour videotape by ATV, but these masters are thought to no longer exist. Only monochrome 16mm film telerecordings of the episodes, made for sales purposes, exist. These surviving recordings were released in the UK by Network DVD in May 2009.
For its theme music, the episode used a segment of the third movement of Symphony No.6 in E minor by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The series' exteriors were filmed at Barr Beacon, Aldridge in Walsall. Don Davidson's timber and scaffolding house was constructed at the top of the Beacon using the tree enclosure, close to the war memorial where Marianne is seen sitting in the closing scenes.
The serial was an adaptation of Catherine Storr's novel "Marianne Dreams". The novel was later adapted into Paperhouse (1988).
