Another year, another move further away from caring about pop. Whether that's pop's fault or mine, I'm not sure. But there was still plenty of great new music released in 2015, and here, according to my idiosyncratic tastes, are the best albums, or at least my favorites.
1. Wire: Wire (Pink Flag)
This is said to be the first time that Bruce Gilbert's replacement, guitarist Matthew Simms, was heavily involved in the creation of a Wire album, and the result is...the closest Wire has ever come to sounding like a Colin Newman album. I exaggerate for effect, but only slightly: most everything thrums along smoothly and motorik-ly, he takes all the lead vocals (though Graham Lewis supposedly wrote many of the lyrics), and there are none of the post-punkier outbursts of the group's previous two reunion albums, though near the end of Wire, the one-two punch of "Split Your Ends" and "Octopus" come close.

Wayne Coyne might as well be a modern day Renaissance man. The Flaming Lips frontman has tackled music, visual art, film and theater, spreading his own brand of weird to any realm that will take him. Psychedelic, absurd and often times hair-raising, the various projects all seem to fit nicely into the hallucinatory experience that has become the Lips.
So it shouldn't be surprising that Coyne has decided to dip his toes into the world of comics with his very Nsfw graphic creation, "The Sun is Sick." Centering on an intergalactic plot line involving a dying star, a blind princess heroine and a mysterious eyeball baby, the work is everything you'd expect from the experimental rock god. Guts, nudity, a penchant for the color pink and all.

It seems a tad bit ridiculous that one of the most naturally talented musicians of my generation, Justin Timberlake, has not released an album in nearly six years (his last being ‘06’s FutureSex/ LoveSounds, of course). The guy is missing out on what would be the prime of his music career. With that said, there’s got to be something to this acting business that keeps driving musicians – rockers and rappers alike – to the medium.
Timberlake’s undeniable good looks and wealth of talent help make him a perfect candidate for a career in film career, but there are plenty of other rockers who we feel would be right at home on the silver screen.
Here are the six rock musicians that we want to see take up the acting game the most.

While their first foray into the world of film, a subpar low-budget sci-fi film entitled Christmas On Mars, may not have been as Earth shattering as some of their music, it looks like The Flaming Lips are looking to return to the big screen with a new film.

Remember "Christmas On Mars"? No? That film, a very low-budget sci-fi tale, took about seven years to complete with The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne calling in favors to a plethora of people including Steve Burns, Modest Mouse leader Isaac Brock, Adam Goldberg, Fred Armisen and Elijah Wood. And when it did finally come out, no one really saw it (and it wasn't that great). But you gotta hand it to Coyne, the man doesn't do anything half-assed (if you've seen their live shows, you know exactly what we mean) and he's got another project in the works. Speaking with…...

In addition to being an iconic star in the underground music scene, Nick Cave has also carved out an incredible niche for himself in the film world. He worked on the music for "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," penned the screenplay for the 2005 indie hit "The Proposition" and contributed to the Leonard Cohen tribute film "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man." His most recent project is his most intriguing yet. According to the Wrap, Cave is working on a screenplay for a remake of "The Crow," the 1994 action film directed by Alex Proyas about an undead avenger (originally played by Brandon Lee). The original flick was a Goth-punk asskicker of a movie that was incredibly dark and featured a killer soundtrack (featuring Nine Inch Nails, the Cure, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine and the Jesus and Mary Chain), and the new version (to be...

Over a period that spanned many years, Wayne Coyne and his compatriots in The Flaming Lips made a movie called Christmas on Mars. The film is a weird psychedelic adventure that isn't for all tastes, but you have to respect it for at least one thing: Coyne wanted to make a movie, and proceeded to collect junk that he turned into sets in his back yard. Christmas on Mars was born of a simple desire to make a movie, and Coyne saw it through. Now he says that there is another film planned, and that he wants to recruit a load of famous guest stars. First target: Justin Timberlake. Billboard spoke with Coyne about the project, which, like Mars, will mostly be shot at his home in Oklahoma City. (Granted, his home is kind of amazing.) Other members of the band as well as friends and family will crew...

For better or for worse, the Flaming Lips are synonymous with weird. Their onstage antics include—but are in no way limited to—a human-size, crowd-surfing hampster ball, projectile confetti and enough laser pointers to cause some serious retinal damage. Topics covered on their albums range from the cosmos to robots to Vaseline. So it was no surprise when frontman Wayne Coyne was caught taking a bath on the front lawn, or when, in 2008, the Lips released the long-awaited Christmas on Mars, a movie about a suicidal Santa in outer space which starred Coyne as a Martian....

In 2008, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne released "Christmas on Mars," a supremely odd, seven-years-in-the-making Diy film about isolation and madness (or something). Despite the fact that the incredibly prolific Coyne managed to create two stellar albums in 2009 (Embryonic and the full-length cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon), he wants to keep busy. He told Billboard that he was planning his next movie, and he's really looking to get some star power this time around.
"I'm in the process of begging Justin Timberlake to be part of it," Coyne said. "If I'm lucky I'll be able to wear him down in another year." It's part of a larger push to get some big stars into the new project, which doesn't have a title but does have a much simpler scope as far as sets go. "My only goal was that I didn't have to build space station-looking sets...

The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne has revealed that he wants Justin Timberlake to star in the group's new movie. The Oklahoma oddballs are currently begging the SexyBack singer to star in the forthcoming follow-up to Christmas On Mars
The Flaming Lips are once again making a movie, but this time they are leaving out the spaceships. As the group plan their follow-up to 2008's Christmas On Mars their sights are set on er, Justin Timberlake.
"I'm in the process of begging [him]," frontman Wayne Coyne told Billboard, referring to the SexyBack singer. "If I'm lucky I'll be able to wear him down in another year." Although the Flaming Lips haven't revealed their new movie's title, plot, or whether Coyne will once again be painted green, the group are determined to nab "real actors" for certain roles, alongside family, friends and, we suppose, bassists. Quirky rockers The Flaming Lips are planning another movie adventure after their 2008 film "Christmas on Mars" became a hit among fans - and they want Justin Timberlake to star in it. The group are hoping to turn family members and friends into stars by recruiting them for their latest film project, which will be filmed in and around the band's native Oklahoma City.
But frontman Wayne Coyne admits he's keen to land a few big stars as well. He tells Billboard, "I'm in the process of begging Justin Timberlake to be part of it; if I'm lucky I'll be able to wear him down in another year."
Timberlake first teamed up with the group for a performance on Britain's Top of the Pops in 2002, during which the singer wore a dolphin costume and played the bass.

I've been hearing all week about an upcoming Flaming Lips concert here in Austin, and while I'm unlikely to go (it's up against the opening night of SXSW Film), I do have an urge to see the Flaming Lips perform again. Fortunately, I can do this right from the comfort of my computer. SlashControl has the 2005 documentary about the band, The Fearless Freaks, available to stream online for free.
The Fearless Freaks is directed by Bradley Beesley (Okie Noodling, Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo), who grew up in the same hometown as the Flaming Lips -- Oklahoma City. Beesley has also directed some Flaming Lips videos and helped out with Wayne Coyne's feature film Christmas on Mars, and is able to provide an intimate portrait of the band, not just a standard music biopic.

Most of the Christmas celebrations on TV are filled with top-shelf, chart-topping talent like Shakira, Usher, Aretha Franklin and the like, but just because you aren't selling tons of records doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the Christmas spirit. Take the Flaming Lips, who are somewhat obsessed with the concept of the holiday (they made a movie called "Christmas on Mars," have a song called "Christmas at the Zoo" and regularly recruited people to dress as Santa Claus and dance with them on stage during live shows). To celebrate the season (as well as their excellent new album Embryonic), the band is offering up the "Silver Trembling Fetus Ornament." The tree-ready doodad sells for $30, and according to an introductory sales video recorded by frontman Wayne Coyne, "It is rumored to give off vibrations that help all humans progress towards an intelligence explosion. Plus, it has the potential to make you smarter.

How couldn’t you be existential in space? Cut off from Mother Earth, becoming a machine of sorts with only memories of holidays to pass the time? In the lovably lo-fi sci-fi Christmas On Mars, psych rock band The Flaming Lips have invented a straight-to-dvd film that could be a lost cousin to 2001, but born on the other end of the budget universe. Stuck on Mars with the gravity control device and the oxygen supply failing, a group of young colonists try to fix their space home, while battling hallucinations of babies. Part of the space colony also houses a white, antiseptic room where a woman is undergoing futuristic experiments to give birth without the child actually having to grow inside her. Lead character Major Syrtis (the Lips’...

I like it when new DVD releases are all over the place and offer up a taste of many genres. As you'll see, that's definitely what's going on this week. The undisputed heavy hitter is, of course, Guillermo del Toro's beautifully lensed Hellboy II: The Golden Army. While I hardly think it's a perfect film, it was surely a joy a watch so be sure to check that out. On that same note, Star Wars: Clone Wars is also out this week. anybody out there been watching the new CGI show? I've caught bits and pieces here and there but haven't formed much of an opinion yet. Then we've got Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django which, as a western fan and despite some mixed reviews, I've been dying to see.

Even with today's overuse of that grainy and scratchy style from the 70's, the film still had a fantastic beginning. A moon boot broad shooting a rainbow laser gun, a theatrical voice un-pronouncing the film lead-ins, and overall a massive wish that I had surround sound attached to my tv. I think I missed out on a large portion of the film due to that, nuts. But this is only the introduction.
The actual film is shot in black and white with hints of color, and starts immediately with a pensive mood, possibly bordering on space sickness, which then transitions into the menacing. And for a band famous for its theatricality and for live performances that include confetti, balloons, costumes and crowd-surfing in a giant bubble, a shift to the big screen seemed inevitable.
