Gaming giant Embracer Group, after recently splitting with Saber Interactive, in its latest move, is splitting into three new entities. The Lord of the Rings owner says it will allow the new companies to focus better on their respective works. The companies include Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends, Asmodee Group, and Coffee Stain & Friends.
It may come as a surprise to many as news surrounding the company during the year 2023 and the better half of 2024 were filled with either layoffs or splitting off with studios. It also entered an agreement with Take-Two Interactive to sell Brothers in Arms creator Gearbox which the Rockstar parent believes will add strength to the company.

This article contains spoilers for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Respawn Entertainment surprised gamers and Star Wars fans alike with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The title is not only a blast to play, but its story and characters are fleshed out, thanks in no small part to its cast.
Instead of starring mostly voice actors, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sports an even mix of talented voices and skilled live-action actors. While this strategy has proven disastrous for many games in the past, every member of Fallen Order’s cast carried their role with dignity and gravitas. And when Respawn announced a sequel, the voice director knew they had a good thing going for them and kept most of the actors who brought Fallen Order to life. As for the voices of new characters of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, they fit right in.

Despite that online halfwit insisting, “politics have no place in ‘Star Wars,’” or some nonsense about wokeness, I’m sorry to break it to you that George Lucas’ films have always been, in fact, political from the jump. It is an era where a totalitarian regime rules the galaxy with an iron fist wiping out all dissidents and agitators, after all. While its fantasy elements and family legacy perhaps overshadowed the franchise for years, the prequels were concurrently just as much about the tragic erosion of democracy as they were about the fall of the chosen one.

This week on The Web.Files, Kristyn Burtt interviews John Beck Hoffman creator of the web series Tyranny as well as the series Dp and one man crew, Garrett Baquet. The series itself features a world-spanning collection of locations from London to Prague all the way to the Artic and boasts production values rarely seen in a web series. However as seen in the interview, much of the series was filmed in one location that Hoffman repurposed as necessary in a clever display of indie filmmaking. Hoffman, who works as a documentary filmmaker for Nasa, financed the series independently. Originally created as a feature length film, Tyranny made the festival rounds in 2007, before finding new life as a web series in 2010. The series centers on Daniel McCarthy, portrayed by Hoffman, as a struggling artist who, in 1999, volunteers for an experiment that results in him having a ‘flash forward’ vision of the future.

Growing up as a lanky, bookish, clumsy girl, I remember experiencing watching my best friend (who was busty, blond, and outgoing) as she dove head-first into the dating scene, leaving me to spend weeks and sometimes months wondering if she was doing okay...or if she was even still alive. But in a best friend relationship, sometimes the old cliché is in effect: if you care about something set it free, if it comes back... This is the premise of the new independent web series The Best Friend: a romantic comedy shown through the Pov of the best friend character rather than the ingenue. In the first episode we see Millie, gobbling away at a tub of ice cream and talking to her mother who is trying to convince her she's wasting her time with therapy. Her best friend, the seemingly perfect Sooze, is in love and nowhere to be found.

From the trailer you get the idea that Tyranny is a distant relative of 70’s American thrillers, where corporations rule the world and your mind. From the three episodes I’ve screened, I was convinced it was another dystopic, post-apocalyptic thriller. Dystopia, I know, but I think timing wise, this is more pre-apocalypse. At any rate this series from creator John Beck Hofman is gripping while still competently executed for its scope. Hofman plays Daniel McCarthy who in 1999 volunteers for a Berkley Grad student’s experiment that records his every thought and action throughout the day. Shortly thereafter he realizes he has lost memory of the last eight days and can now see the future from 2011 to 2013. And it ain’t pretty. Food shortages, bio-engineered pandemic, and picketers galore…future? Hmm, that sounds awfully similar to a certain planet I know right now. The rest of the cast is impressive,...

Watching the Tyranny trailer is like watching a mini action movie pumped into three minutes of high-quality excitement. Tyranny is indeed no ordinary web series. Self-financed by creator and star John Beck Hoffman, the world wide landscapes provide a big budget-looking back drop for what is truly an independent web series. Hoffman called us from London to speak about the re-launch of his pet project while attending the premiere of Quantum Solace to support his Tyranny co-star Olga Kurylenko. Hoffman said he was psyched to give the show a re-birth after pouring so much energy into it. The project started as a feature script several years ago, but Hoffman says, "As the times have changed, and I struggled with making it a feature, I started thinking about cutting it into a web series since it takes place over 14 years of time. Then I had a crazy idea to just do...
