Author Django Wexler’s novel How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying – which has been described as “Groundhog Day meets Guardians of the Galaxy” – won’t be reaching store shelves until May 21st (you can pre-order a copy at This Link), but Deadline reports that Legendary has already come out the winner in a bidding war over the adaptation rights. A TV series adaptation is now in development, with Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard heading up the project and producing with his manager Jeremy Platt.
How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying is said to be a “laugh-out-loud fantasy tale about a young woman who, tired of defending humanity from the Dark Lord, decides to become the Dark Lord herself.” Here’s the book’s description: Davi has done this all before. She’s tried to be the hero and take down the all-powerful Dark Lord.

Watching the evolution of Adam Wingard’s career over the years has been a lot of fun for this writer, as he’s navigated the waters of low-budget/high-ambition genre projects like Pop Skull and Home Sick to his work on notable indie horror fare like A Horrible Way to Die as well as the first two V/H/S films to other fan favorites like You’re Next and The Guest, and he even had the chutzpah to take on Blair Witch back in 2016 as well (a film that I rewatch every Halloween season and still adore). And while Wingard has never been a filmmaker to shy away from a challenge, his latest project—Godzilla vs. Kong—is easily his most ambitious effort to date.

“It” may be a box office smash, but it’s hardly the only horror movie worth talking about these days. Just 17 years in, and the 21st century has already played home to a remarkable number of truly chilling and inventive horror offerings, from a resurgence in J-horror remakes to a continued affection for the classic series of yesteryear, to the massive dominance of the “Conjuring” movie universe and even a “Saw” franchise so dominant that it’s already cycled back into resurrection territory, and that’s just the mainstream stuff.

Writing the sequel to one of the most historic horror films from the past 20 years might sound like a screenwriter’s dream job, but for Simon Barrett, taking on “Blair Witch” was more scary than fun. Having to satisfy millions of fans of a cult film that earned nearly $250 million at the box office in 1999 is a task that would make any writer sweat. Though Barrett already had eight feature film writing credits prior to signing on for the Lionsgate project, he’d never been tasked with writing a studio movie, not to mention a sequel to a horror franchise.

“It was not a fun experience,” the 37-year-old Barrett told IndieWire in a recent interview. “You want it to be as good as it possibly can, and it never is, because that’s the nature of the process.

With films such as Home Sick, Pop Skull and A Horrible Way to Die, and more recently, You’re Next and The Guest, Adam Wingard has established a reputation as one of the most inventive filmmakers working in the horror genre today. Wingard’s latest film, The Woods, tackles the found footage sub-genre and we’re bracing ourselves for maximum scares. Written by Simon Barrett (The Guest, You’re Next), The Woods involves a group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone. The trailer (above) reveals little in terms of plot, but surely succeeds at setting the creepy tone. On Twitter, Wingard boasted that The Woods “is my first full on […]...

Tom Towles may be best known for his role as Otis in Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer but the mans resume stretches far beyond that one glimmer. In fact Tom was a damn dedicated player in the game of horror. The prolific actor sports more than 60 projects on his ledger (with plenty of television work included) and a wealth of standout pictures can be found. Towles appeared in a number of Rob Zombie films including Halloween The Devils Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses. He also tackled roles in The Prophecy II Night of the Living Dead and Home Sick. He was passionate boasted amazing on screen presence and we fans appreciated that.

I’ve been a fan of Adam Wingard since a friend of mine told me I needed to watch Home Sick. Good directors have a unique style that’s all their own, and is immediately recognizable to their fans; Adam Wingard’s is one of my favorite. No matter the size in scope of the story he’s telling, his films have a smaller, more personal feel to them. They tend to center around one or two characters, and never stray too far from them. It takes talent to make that kind of movie work, and Wingard nails it more times than not. You’re Next was one of my favorite movies of last year ( I didn’t get to see it until it got wide release), so my expectations for The Guest were pretty high going in. For the most part it delivered, but fell just short of being...

My fellow Revenge-ineers are well aware that (too?) often it’s people from Emily’s yesteryears who complicate the scheme queen’s plotting. So perhaps you’ll find it as welcome a change of pace as I do that, in this week’s episode, it isn’t someone from her history who appears poised to muck up her get-even-detta, it’s someone from Daniel’s. At any rate, a blast from her fiancee’s past is but one of the erstwhile Amanda’s problems in “Dissolution.”

How crazy would you be prepared to get for $50? What about $500? What about a quarter of a million dollars? Such questions form the dramatic spine of the booze- and drugs-fueled black comedy Cheap Thrills, which is screening at this year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Anchorman star David Koechner and Sara Paxton play a rich couple who challenge a pair of much poorer new acquaintances — portrayed by Pat Healy and Can’t Hardly Wait actor Ethan Embry — to complete a series of ever more out-there challenges for increasing amounts of cheddar.

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

Cheap Thrills, the indie thriller that scored the opening “Midnighters” spot at South By Southwest, has already landed a deal. The Paris-based company Films Distribution, whose past genre acquisitions include Benjamin Rocher’s cult zombie hit The Horde, Alex de la Iglesia’s insane clown-vs-clown epic The Last Circus and Franck Richard's darkly comic cannibal flick The Pack, will bring the film to the Cannes Film Festival to sell to distributors. Produced by Snowfort Pictures (whose horror comedy Big Ass Spider! is also screening at SXSW), Cheap Thrills is the directorial debut of screenwriter E.L. Katz (Home Sick, Autopsy). It stars Pat Healy and Sara Paxton – who previously starred in Ti West's The Innkeepers – along with David Koechner, Ethan Embry and Amanda Fuller. “This year, we wanted to make people laugh before we made them squirm,” New Artists founder/producer Gabe Cowan tells Fango. “Both films are funny and intense, and defy genre in their own ways.”
Milo stars Gillian Jacobs, Ken Marino and genre regular Peter Stormare. Marino plays Ducan, a man whose stomach issues prove to be much more than irritable bowel syndrome: A demon child is inhabiting his intestines. How’s that for nausea inducing? Jacobs plays Sarah, Ken’s stressful wife, and Stormare is his therapist Highsmith. This is the first feature from director Jacob Vaughan since 2006’s narrative-bending Cassidy Kids; this time, he teamed up with writer Benjamin Hayes (True Blood, Angel Of Death) for the Milo script, so it’s certain to be equal parts blood and camp. The producing team is comprised of Cowan and longtime producing partner/New Artists co-founder John Suits, along with the Duplass brothers and Adele Romanski.

Chicago – Some of the finest names in modern independent cinema may be garnering their largest audiences to date when the anthology horror film, “V/H/S,” is released on October 5th. It combines five horror shorts with a “wraparound” tale in which an assortment of troublemaking vandals (including “Open Five” director Kentucker Audley) search a spooky house for a priceless VHS tape.
This segment, “Tape 56,” was directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, two accomplished filmmakers in their own right, who have collaborated on horror films such as “A Horrible Way to Die” and “You’re Next.” Barrett also wrote and co-produced the “V/H/S” segment entitled “The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger,” which was directed by Chicago’s own Joe Swanberg (Wingard served as photographer and sound designer). With his features Home Sick, Pop Skull and A Horrible Way to Die, Adam Wingard is carving out a reputation as one of the most imaginative and visually sophisticated directors working in modern horror. His films are mindful of genre conventions, finding ways to subvert them through unexpected characterizations that have real psychological depth. His latest movie reinvents the home invasion thriller. We spoke to Wingard about blood, style and directing other directors.

Director Adam Wingard hit the horror scene running with his feature film debut Home Sick back in 2007 which centered around a maniac with razors, a super human killing machine attacking a group of unsuspecting teens and featured performances from genre favorites including Bill Moseley, Tom Towles and Tiffany Shepis.
In 2009, the filmmaker's next movie Pop Skull introduced audiences to the gritty world of pill-addicted protagonist Daniel who's biggest problem may not have been the drugs he couldn't put down but rather the ghosts that haunted him in his daily life.
In Wingard's latest, the award-winning A Horrible Way to Die, the director has teamed up with writer Simon Barrett (Dead Birds) to give horror fans an intimate and emotional look into the devastation one man's actions can cause when Sarah (Amy Seimetz) discovers her boyfriend Garrick (Aj Bowen) has been leading a double-life as a serial killer and the struggles...

"Pop Skull is very unique, because it progresses from an intimate mumblecore movie into more of an intense psychological ghost story. Another selling point is that it was produced for less than it usually takes to shoot a low budget music video." - For a website that prides itself on championing indie films and filmmakers, we here at ioncinema.com really missed the boat with Pop Skull, an award-winning - jury awards at the Boston Underground amd Indianapolis International film festivals - ultra-low budget experimental thriller from director Adam Wingard (Home Sick). Amanda Crawford stars in director Adam Wingard's (Pop Skull, Home Sick) short film Cerebella. The short Forms part two of the directors "Forgot My Meds" trilogy, though the first and second centre around a different lead charter. The film follows young woman's journey into the realms of sleep deprivation. Cerebella has a lovely dreamy, not quite surreal feel. Some snatches of really quite beautiful cinematography and skilful editing make it a joy to watch.
You can watch part 1 and 2 of the trilogy which feature Hannah Hughes as Laura Panic over on the directors YouTube Channel.

Fango just chatted with Don May Jr. of Synapse Films, who talked up his upcoming discs of the new indie shockers Sick Girl (pictured) and Header. The former (no relation to Lucky McKee’s same-titled Masters Of Horror episode) is a truly twisted tale from writer/director Eben McGarr.
Leslie Andrews stars in the title role of Izzy, an orphaned girl who takes an extremely violent approach to protecting her younger brother; you can see the movie’s official website here. “It’s just a brutal, brutal movie,” May tells Fango. “It’s funny, too; the filmmakers have a really good sense of humor—and hey, it’s got Stephen [Fright Night] Geoffreys in it!” The extras are currently being put together for Sick Girl, and while it’s too early to report those details, May notes that Synapse will likely use the striking promo photo seen here on the DVD’s cover.
