When promoting Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg claimed that every war movie is an anti-war movie. I think this is doubly true when it comes to genre cinema. After all, what better way to immerse audiences in the horrors of war than by telling a story specifically designed to scare them?
Hell, sometimes the war itself doesn’t even need to happen onscreen, like in the case of 1954’s Godzilla – one of the all-time best commentaries on nuclear warfare. And with Takashi Yamazaki returning the radioactive dinosaur to his post-war roots in Godzilla Minus One, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six more war-time horror movies for fans of historical terror.
While not all of the films on this list take place during a war, they all incorporate warfare and its consequences into their stories. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your...

Along with a few fast-forgotten dogs, Simon Barrett has written some of the more enjoyable U.S. horror opuses over the last two decades, from 2004’s period ghost story “Dead Birds” through a series of Adam Wingard films that laid career path to that director’s current big-budget assignment “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
You might expect Barrett’s own belated feature directorial debut to expand upon the clever, blackly humorous genre mayhem of his best Wingard projects like “The Guest” and “You’re Next.” But “Seance” proves a disappointingly boilerplate retro slasher that’s pedestrian on every level from concept to execution. It’s not terrible, only so devoid of imagination, wit or novelty (as well as scares) that it seems a perversely generic choice with which to launch a new career phase. Rlje Films is releasing to U.S. and Canadian theaters, VOD and digital May 21, with co-distributor Shudder expected to...

Writing the sequel to one of the most historic horror films from the past 20 years might sound like a screenwriter’s dream job, but for Simon Barrett, taking on “Blair Witch” was more scary than fun. Having to satisfy millions of fans of a cult film that earned nearly $250 million at the box office in 1999 is a task that would make any writer sweat. Though Barrett already had eight feature film writing credits prior to signing on for the Lionsgate project, he’d never been tasked with writing a studio movie, not to mention a sequel to a horror franchise.

“It was not a fun experience,” the 37-year-old Barrett told IndieWire in a recent interview. “You want it to be as good as it possibly can, and it never is, because that’s the nature of the process.

Well, you can’t say Salem doesn’t know how to keep its promises. “Dead Birds” had a lot of dead birds in it. Apparently, they like to fly into Baby John’s window when he’s angry. Ready For Their Close-Up: Six TV Characters Worthy of a Spin-Off
Television history is littered with the bodies of ill-advised spin-offs. Their corpses, copies of reviews and overnights crumpled in their clawed little hands, defile the memories of the successful shows that spawned them and serve as cautionary tales for every writer tempted to go to the same well twice… read the full article.
Why You Should Be Watching: You’re the Worst
When it debuted in early 2014 on FX, You’re the Worst unfortunately got lumped together with all the other shows about people in relationships that were in production or released around that time. You’re the Worst was a lower-key choice for the network: a small-scale character comedy that had none of the splashy, dramatic flare of other flagship shows. This tonal difference between the network and You’re the Worst was maybe why it was...

The show begins with Josh (Jay Baruchel) awkwardly leaving the apartment of his now ex-girlfriend Maggie (Maya Erskine). As he walks away, heartbroken, suddenly it starts raining. But it’s only raining on him, nobody else. Dead birds fall from the sky and hit him, furthering his depressing state. The show only gets weirder from there. Within the next ten minutes, he’s gone on a date with an actual troll. Yes, you read that right. An actual troll. By the end of the pilot he’s also discovered that his ex-girlfriend is dating Hitler. Yes, that Hitler. This is just the first episode, and there are 9 more to go from there (plus another season on the way!), each one getting progressively more bizarre.

It’s safe to say horror westerns don’t have the best track record. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a good amount of decent examples out there such as Grim Prarie Tales, Ravenous, Dead Birds and The Burrowers. Given that, it was with a sense of trepidation that I approached Blood Moon…

Fantasia International Film Festival 2014 runs July 17 to August 6. Follow all of our coverage here. Amelia Brooks (Beth Grant) is gone. Presumed dead, the accomplished swimmer went missing on a dive in the very lake she had been campaigning to preserve in her final years. Her three adult daughters arrive at their childhood home near the water to reminisce, console each other and make plans for their mother’s belongings, but their time together soon takes an unsettling turn. Dead birds begin appearing on their doorstep, an incident with a camera suggests a possible intruder and the local legend of Spirit Lake — a lake that reportedly has yet to reveal its bottom — begins to fill their imagination. Long ago seven sisters walked the water’s shore only to drown, one by one, and like the Pleiades of Greek mythology they’ve come to symbolize a sad state of grace that’s eternally out of reach. Are...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

"V/H/S" was actually pretty good as far as found footage horror movies ago, with its gimmicky no-budget aesthetic actually working especially well for its unnerving anti-casual-sex opener, "Amateur Night," and the creepy final segment involving a very haunted house, "10/31/98."
A sequel was inevitable, which brings us to "S-vhs" (super VHS), named after the semi-professional analog format that showed up in the late '80s and lasted for about two weeks.
This collection of lo-fi terror tales sports an even more impressive line-up of directors, including Simon Barrett ("Dead Birds"), Adam Wingard (" A Horrible Way to Die"), Edúardo Sánchez ("The Blair Witch Project"), Gregg Hale ("Seventh Moon"), Timo Tjahjanto ("The ABCs of Death"), Gareth Huw Evans ("The Raid: Redemption") and Jason Eisener ("Hobo with a Shotgun").
And you gotta love the synopsis for the film, courtesy of the Sundance Film Festival:

Note: This interview originally ran in September, but we're reposting it now with V/H/S debuting on DVD and Blu-ray today. Simon Barrett may not be a household name, though he'd rather that be the case. If you're a horror fan, however, you may know him as the writer-producer behind the Civil War-set haunter Dead Birds, the emotionally scarring A Horrible Way to Die, the home-invasion movie with a twist You're Next, or the inventive found-footage anthology V/H/S. It's that last film, which hit Video on Demand platforms in September ahead of its October 5 theatrical release, that brings us here today. Barrett wrote and produced two of the segments in V/H/S, the wraparound device that frames it all ("Tape 56," directed by Adam Wingard) and the very...

Chicago – Some of the finest names in modern independent cinema may be garnering their largest audiences to date when the anthology horror film, “V/H/S,” is released on October 5th. It combines five horror shorts with a “wraparound” tale in which an assortment of troublemaking vandals (including “Open Five” director Kentucker Audley) search a spooky house for a priceless VHS tape.
This segment, “Tape 56,” was directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, two accomplished filmmakers in their own right, who have collaborated on horror films such as “A Horrible Way to Die” and “You’re Next.” Barrett also wrote and co-produced the “V/H/S” segment entitled “The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger,” which was directed by Chicago’s own Joe Swanberg (Wingard served as photographer and sound designer). Magnet has released Esad Ribic's comic-style one-sheet for V/H/S (review here) - the final one in the set - and we have this beauty right here for you to dig on.
