As Taylor Swift once said, “August slipped away like a moment in time,” and August 2023 has been no different. Summer starts to come to a close at the end of August as kids head back to school, Labor Day looms and folks soak up those last few days before the official start of fall on Sept. 21. Netflix will say goodbye to some important titles at the end of this month as well.
The majority of films leaving Netflix will leave on the last day, so there is still time to squeeze some in before the month fully ends. Those leaving the streamer Aug. 31 include “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mean Girls,” the “Open Season” films, “Paranormal Activity,” “The Ring” and “Sleepless in Seattle” among others.
While plenty of new films and television shows have arrived on Netflix in August like “Heartstopper” Season 2 and some of the “Despicable Me” films as...

Most animation studios have a distinct in-house style that sets them apart from their peers. For example, it's pretty easy to look at a Pixar animated film and recognize it immediately, but Sony Pictures has the rare distinction of not having an in-house style. Each of their films, made by Sony Pictures Animation (Spa) and Sony Pictures Imageworks (Spi), have their own unique look that best serves the story being told. In a 30-year retrospective, The Wrap traced the past, present, and future of Spa, and revealed that not having an in-house style is actually an important rule that kept Sony unique.
By focusing on the filmmakers' needs and ideas instead of trying to hold to a consistent style, the various films made by Spa and Spi are able to go above and beyond, breaking the boundaries of animation in bold new ways. Something as groundbreaking as "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse...

Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been two of my favorite creators for years. I was probably too young to be watching "Clone High" when it aired on MTV from 2002-2003, but best believe I was immediately transported back to seventh grade when it was announced the series would be soon getting a reboot for Paramount+. In the years that followed, Lord and Miller have had their hands on a number of projects I absolutely adore, as well as producing "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," which was undoubtedly my favorite film of 2021.
The duo has become go-to partners for animated features, but as some of the first people to work under the Sony Pictures Animation banner, it wasn't always smooth sailing. The Wrap recently published a look at the first 20 years of the company, which includes the rise of Lord and Miller. "The drywall was barely up," Lord joked about...

“Once the pandemic hit, we prepared for the worst,” says David McIntosh, Director of Marketing at Tastemakers, the parent company of Arcade1Up. “We tightened up our staff, we let go of some of our external partners…as most people did. We did go into survival mode and started getting back to our roots of being a startup.”
Steeped in nostalgia, Arcade1Up has been developing and manufacturing 3/4 scale arcade cabinets of some of the most iconic arcade titles in history, releasing them through major retailers like Best Buy and Walmart since 2018. From Space Invaders and Street Fighter to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Golden Tee, Arcade1Up’s line of cabinets spans the history of arcade culture.
The idea is to bring the classic arcade experience to people’s homes, reviving arcade hits in a new format that fits more snugly into the modern gaming landscape.

“Abominable,” the animated family film from DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studios, earned $650,000 in box office previews on Thursday from 2,950 screens. It opens on 4,242 screens this weekend.
“Abominable” is the sole new wide release this weekend and could contend for the number one movie in America depending on how “Downton Abbey” performs in its second weekend. Universal is handling domestic distribution, and both the studio and independent trackers are projecting an opening between $17-20 million for the film.
That would put it close to films like “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” which also opened to $20.4 million in Sept. 2017, and DreamWorks’ “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,” which made $23 million. Those films though skipped preview screenings. The previous DreamWorks release, this spring’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” raked in $3 million in Thursday previews behind a $55 million opening weekend.

Animation can be a tough venture for filmmakers: The target audience tends to be young children, who simultaneously have a limited attention span while still demanding entertainment at every corner. But then if the story is too juvenile or too preachy, or if the animation itself isn’t eye-catching, then you lose the parents, the all-important keepers of the wallet. And even when an animated film becomes an exquisite piece of cinema, their audiences aren’t necessarily going to run out and buy a stuffed yeti plush afterward.
Writer-director Jill Culton (“Open Season”) understands this mix of priorities, and her latest film “Abominable” falls somewhere in the middle of it all, with a story that’s sweet but formulaic, jokes that are juvenile but not annoying, and the use of gorgeous colors and textures. Nothing here truly changes animation, and yet, you can’t help but walk out of the...

Hulu is out with its list of new and expiring content for the month of September, and what better way to beat the back-to-school blues than with a whole bunch of binge-watching.
Among the new goodies coming next month is the 12th episode and season finale of horror anthology series “Into the Dark.” Out Sept. 6, the finale is called “Pure,” and is described as a female coming-of-age horror story in which a group of teenage girls perform a secret ritual at a “Purity Retreat.” When one of them begins to see a “supernatural entity,” a scary question is posed: “What is more dangerous: the demon they’ve unleashed, or the pressure to conform to their fathers’ expectations?” Scary indeed!

Georgia Engel, who earned two Emmy noms for playing Ted Baxter’s significant other Georgette Franklin on The Mary Tyler Moore and three consecutive for Everybody Loves Raymond, has died. She was 70. She died Friday in Princeton, NJ, her friend and executor John Quilty told The New York Times.
Engel joined The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1972 when it was a top 10 primetime series and would appear in nearly 60 episodes over its final five seasons. Her dim but well-meaning Georgette was the love interest of self-important anchorman Baxter (Ted Knight), who courted and eventually her during the November 1975 sweep — though he didn’t seem all that prepared for it. They went on to adopt a child and later had one of their own.
The role earned her back-to-back Emmy noms for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1976 and ’77.

“There are mimosas upstairs,” a staffer reminds Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson on a recent Friday in her sunny and serene office, just a brisk walk from the studio lot in Culver City, Calif.

Laika’s fifth film, “Missing Link,” will bow April 19, 2019, breaking free from Focus Features in a North American distribution alliance with Annapurna Pictures. The Yeti adventure opens ahead of DreamWorks’ similarly-themed “Abominable,” which Universal Pictures will release September 27, 2019, directed by Jill Culton (“Open Season”) and voiced by Chloe Bennet.
“Missing Link” is a buddy comedy/adventure about explorer Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) and a Yeti named Mr. Link (Zach Galifianakis), who embark on a global quest from the Pacific Northwest in search of the legendary Shangri-La, home of Link’s ancestry. They team up with adventurer Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), who possesses the only known map to their secret destination.
Once again, Laika embraces acceptance and belonging in its first movie not starring a child hero. Written and directed by Chris Butler (“ParaNorman”), “Missing Link” also features the voice talents of Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, Timothy Olyphant, Matt Lucas,...

Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Studios and Storyoscopic Films on Monday announced a joint venture whereby Storyoscopic will produce and finance approximately five or more projects a year.
Films produced under the joint venture and backed by what a source said would be at least $200m in production funding will release internationally via Relativity’s network of output partners and go through Relativity Europa Distribution (Red) in the Us.
Relativity launched Red in 2010 after it acquired Overture Films from John Malone’s Liberty Media and four years later EuropaCorp came on board in a reported $130m deal to acquire a 50% stake.
The venture comes as Relativity shifts its focus towards financing, producing and distributing family films and branded features with global appeal.
George Lee and Marcus Englefield, the duo behind 2D-to-3D conversion specialists Venture 3D, have worked with Hollywood and Chinese partners and launched Storyoscopic in 2013 to make family and genre films in the $15-50m range...

Cbm: Tell us a little bit about Open Season: Scared Silly? David: It’s a Continuation of Open Season One. Boog believes it’s true and Elliot has to try and get Boog to get over his fear of this werewolf. They see something that they believe is an actual werewolf. Shaw the hunter reappears in this film and he finds out that there is a werewolf lose that means it’s his ticket to get hunting season open again. He convinces the town and the sheriff to reopen open season again. Cbm: The Werewolf is such a big part of the story in Open Season: Scared Silly. How did that character come about? Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

The Boxtrolls producer Travis Knight (ParaNorman, Coraline) and director Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) talk with Deadline’s Pete Hammond about the challenges and joys of stop-motion animation, a creation process nearly as old (and beloved) as cinema itself, in this video from Deadline’s recent Oscar showcase, The Contenders.
Actually making a film with the stop-motion process, however, can be incredibly stressful, says Stacchi. It’s like ” 18 months of opening nights with no rehearsals.”
The voice cast includes a number of notables, including Ben Kingsley, Tracy Morgan, Elle Fanning, James Urbaniak, Toni Collette and Simon Pegg (plus uncredited work by Mr. SpongeBob SquarePants (and Adventure Time Ice King) himself, Tom Kenny).
Stacchi directed the film with Graham Annable, from a script by Irena Brignull and Adam Pava, from Alan Snow’s novel Here Be Monsters! The movie was produced by Knight and David Bleiman Ichioka. It has grossed $105.7 million worldwide since its Sept.

Featuring superstar Denzel Washington operating well within his wheelhouse, R-rated action movie The Equalizer had one of the biggest September openings ever this weekend.Meanwhile, The Boxtrolls had an above-average debut for a stop-motion animated movie, though it still wound up slightly behind The Maze Runner's second weekend.Playing at 3,236 theaters, The Equalizer opened to $34.1 million this weekend. That ranks fourth all-time in September behind Hotel Transylvania, Insidious Chapter 2 and Sweet Home Alabama. Among Denzel's movies, The Equalizer's debut ranks third behind American Gangster and Safe House. Lots of factors contributed to this strong debut*a well-managed marketing effort, outreach to Eminem's massive fanbase, etc.*though the real key to the movie's success is the name above the title. Denzel Washington is one of the few bonafide movie stars at the domestic box office; excluding The Great Debaters (in which he played a supporting role), The Equalizer is...

Chicago – How do you interpret an odd British storybook called “Here Be Monsters!” into a mainstream animated film? By taking the main characters – called ‘The Boxtrolls’ – and putting them up front. Animation veterans and co-directors Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi got the assignment, and deliver the goods.
Both creators have been around the animation block, but this is Annable’s first major animation directorial effort. He cut his teeth as a comic book artist and video game director, and was a story artist on the recent “ParaNorman.” Stacchi was previously a co-director on “Open Season” (2006), and started his animation career as a story artist on the classic “Antz” (1998). He also worked on visual effects for the classics “Back to the Future” (1985), “Ghost” (1990) and “Hook” (1991). The animation of ‘The Boxtrolls’ was produced by Laika Entertainment, who also produced the stop motion films “Coraline’” and the aforementioned “ParaNorman.”

There’s a fine line between baroque and grotesque, between gaudy and repellent… and The Boxtrolls crosses it to plop into a strange land of unpleasant visual muck. But not before it has already demonstrated a woeful lack of giving a damn about creating appealing characters, a compelling fantasy world, or a story to care much about. So it’s all good in the ways it goes about being all bad.

All is loss, but not lost. On Sunday night's episode of HBO's drama The Leftovers, bereft town member Nora Durst (Carrie Coon) shows just how far grief can go. Denial Meets DelusionNora lost her entire family - husband and two kids - when the departure happened a few years ago. But as the episode opens, it's clear it feels like just yesterday. Every room in her house looks the same as before her family disappeared. She continues to purchase her kid's cereals and treats that just sit and go stale until she replaces them. But the true depth of her...

In all the hubbub over the next big Pixar Animation film or the next Disney Princess film, it's easy to forget there are still some independent animators out there working on some smaller, more off-the-wall material and in older formats like stop-motion and even (gasp!) 2D cell animation.
One of the most successful of the last few years has been Laika, which formed with Henry Selick to adapt Neil Gaiman's Coraline into an Academy Award nominated film, then continued on without him to develop their second film, ParaNorman, which was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Film and also received many critical kudos for its heart and craft. The company brought it's latest offering, The Boxtrolls (due September 26) to Comic-Con in San Diego this year. From the work shown off by directors Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) and Graham Annable, and Lead Animator (and company CEO) Travis Knight,...

Residents of Cheesebridge lock themselves indoors at night for fear of the Boxtrolls. But Eggs, an orphan raised by the Boxtrolls, knows they would never do humans any harm, and he just might bridge the divide between the two species. Based on the popular novel from Alan Snow, Laika’s The Boxtrolls hits theaters on September 26th, and the film will have a Hall H panel at Sdcc later this week.
Featuring Sir Ben Kingsley, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Elle Fanning, and more, The Boxtrolls Hall H panel will take place on Saturday, July 26th from 1:30pm – 2:30pm. There will also be an Eat Like the Boxtrolls event at Petco Park on Friday and Saturday afternoon, in which Bug Chef David George Gordon will be creating a menu of edible bug and insect creations for attendees to dig into. Signed limited edition posters will also be available at these eating experiences.

When you watch The Boxtrolls trailer, you’ll notice a lot of connections. The most obvious are Coraline and ParaNorman because Laika has maintained a similar visual style throughout all of its young adult adventures. But it also feels slightly like Monsters, Inc. meets The Fraggles by way of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Or maybe like mutant Minions who raise a human child. You’ll also notice that this movie looks absolutely fantastic. Check out the trailer for yourself: Huzzah! Absolutely stunning. This is the first directorial gig for Graham Annable (who was a Story Artist and Storyboard Artist for ParaNorman and Coraline respectively) and the second for Anthony Stacchi (who was co-director on Open Season). They’ve obviously kept a lot of Henry Selick’s stop-motion style in place, along with a great sense of wonder. In a summer without Pixar, it’s a shame we also have to wait until September for this one. How...
