She has a complicated history with her late ex-husband and his Bau successor David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), which makes her reluctant to get involved with the team’s investigation into the murderous and mysterious Gold Star conspiracy. But her skills could be the key to cracking the case, so she agrees to help.

Felicity Huffman, who was nominated for an Oscar for playing a trans woman in 2005’s “Transamerica,” wouldn’t take on such a role again.
It’s a role that she “wouldn’t be able to do now,” Huffman told The Guardian. “I think we should reflect the audience and that’s got to include everybody. There has been such inequity for so long and now the pendulum must swing the other way. But I hope it leads to a situation where anyone can play anything.”
Huffman was asked about meeting trans actor Alexandra Billings, who was due to play the lead in “Transamerica” initially, at an awards ceremony. “I have no memory of that,” Huffman told The Guardian. “As an excuse, I also have no oestrogen left in my body.”
In 2019, Huffman served 11 days in jail for her involvement in the college admissions scandal. “I walk into the room with it.

Over an impressive 11 years, every season of "Frasier" boasted some top-notch guest stars. The beloved sitcom, which recently returned for a revival show that was neither disappointing nor remarkable, featured everyone from Patrick Stewart to Michael Keaton and almost the entire cast of "Cheers" — the show on which Frasier Crane himself debuted.
But there were also a ton of major guest appearances that we never got to see. Dr. Crane famously ran a call-in talk radio show on Seattle's Kacl station, where he would dole out life advice to embattled residents of the Emerald City, many of whom were big-time celebrities. At one point Macaulay Culkin called Frasier's show as a self-conscious 43-year-old man who was concerned about his youthful voice. Then there was the time Helen Mirren sought Dr. Crane's advice about her kleptomania. But that's just the beginning of the sitcom's extensive list of unseen guest stars. In fact,...

Will Ferrell has some pretty cool friends. That shouldn’t come as any kind of surprise to his fans. He appeared on “Saturday Night Live” for seven seasons and still keeps in touch with co-stars like Seth Meyers, Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig. Less familiar, but no less fascinating, is former “SNL” writer Harper Steele, who befriended Ferrell when he first joined the show, believing in the crazy cut-up when others were still skeptical of his talent.
Structured as an on-camera road trip between two longtime friends, fueled by laughs and tears and the occasional “Borat”-style stunt, “Will & Harper” gives the general public a chance to meet this incredible woman. Technically, Ferrell is meeting her for the first time, too, since Steele spent the first six decades of her life as a man. After receiving a long, vulnerable coming-out email from Steele describing her decision to transition at...

Burt Young, the gravely-voiced actor who played Sylvester Stallone‘s brother-in-law, Paulie Pennino, in Rocky, has died at 83. Young became beloved by moviegoers for his interpretation of the down-on-his-luck character who helped champion Rocky Balboa’s rise to boxing stardom. The film franchise would total nine installments over almost 50 years, but how many Rocky movies and sequels did Young appear in?
Burt Young played Paulie Pennino alongside Sylvester Stallone in ‘Rocky’ and its sequels
As Paulie Pennino, Burt Young played the devil character sitting atop one of Rocky Balboa‘s shoulders in the original Rocky film, written and starring Sylvester Stallone. His sister Adrian, played by Talia Shire, was the angel, and both pulled him in different directions emotionally.
Paulie had a temper, drank too much, complained often, and was a pain in the neck. However, he was beloved by Rocky, who could see beyond his tough exterior.

Burt Young, a former boxer who was in Sylvester Stallone’s corner as his brother-in-law Paulie in the six Rocky films and received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his turn in the original, has died. He was 83.
He died on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told The New York Times Wednesday.
A tough guy in real life who usually played tough guys onscreen, Young portrayed a rotten client of gumshoe Jack Nicholson’s in Chinatown (1974), was mobster “Bed Bug” Eddie in The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) and played Rodney Dangerfield’s protector/chauffeur Lou in Back to School (1986).
Young also appeared in four movies in four straight years with fellow Queens guy James Caan — Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Gambler (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976) — before they worked together again in Mickey Blue Eyes (1999).

Burt Young, who played Paulie in six of the “Rocky” films starring Sylvester Stallone, drawing an Oscar nomination for supporting actor for his performance in the 1976 original, has died, his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser confirmed to the New York Times. He was 83.
Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”

While Covid has never quite been eradicated, it has certainly been contained, allowing society to look to the future with a degree of positivity. This has been reflected in so many ways, not least the rise in movie attendance. The road to recovery has been long and painstaking, but moviegoing is back in vogue, with viewings increasing by over 60% last year, a trend likely to continue. Another reason for this growing popularity is the way movies are reflecting trends such as inclusivity. More and more LGBT-oriented films are being released, especially titles focusing on trans characters. Let’s take a closer look at these societal shifts, with the bonus of six movie suggestions where trans storylines are captivating audiences.
Why Inclusivity is Important
Minority groups have always had good reason to feel excluded from mainstream society, with fewer social opportunities, and sometimes facing outright prejudice and discrimination. The equality of...

This is the first project Huffman and Macy, who are married, have done together since the 2017 film Krystal, which Macy directed and the pair starred in. Huffman previously appeared on stage at Theatre Aspen in 1984.

The Oscars returned to a hard slate of 10 Best Picture nominees this year, but ironically, for the first time in the preferential ballot era, none of the Best Actress Oscar nominees are in a Best Picture nominee.
Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”) and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”) made the final five on Tuesday, but none of their films are in the top 10. The Best Picture nominees were “Belfast,” “Coda,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Drive My Car,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story.”
The last time none of the Best Actress nominees were in a Best Picture nominee was 16 years ago, when the main category was still a field of five. Reese Witherspoon won Best Actress for “Walk the Line” over Judi Dench (“Mrs. Henderson Presents”), Felicity Huffman...

“Pose” ends its run this June after three seasons. It’s a groundbreaking drama with more trans actors of color as series regulars than any other program in television history. And it’s an Emmy-winning show that earned a Best Drama Series nomination in 2019 for its first season. So it’s kind of surprising that so far it has zero trans representation in acting categories. Will that change this year?

There have been a few instances in Oscar’s illustrious history that have left film fans scratching their heads. One such occurrence happened on March 5, 2006, at the end of the 78th ceremony when the Best Picture was announced. It remains one of the most controversial wins in the history of the awards show. It was also a year in which there was no big winner – in fact, Four films tied with the most wins – at just three apiece! Also unusual for the Oscars, the awards for picture, director and all four acting awards went to different productions, and there were a few anomalies in the acting categories as well. The event, which was held a week later than normal due to the Winter Olympics, was hosted by Jon Stewart for the first time (he’d host again in 2008). His opening sketch featured former Oscar hosts Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Chris Rock,...

Rachel Brosnahan won Best Comedy Actress at the 2018 Emmys for her breakthrough performance in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Now she’s a contender for big-screen kudos for a strikingly different performance in the Amazon crime thriller “I’m Your Woman.” Could her popularity on TV translate to success at the Oscars? She wouldn’t be the first Emmy-winning funny lady to get the attention of the motion picture academy.

“Tammy’s Always Dying” belongs to that peculiarly Canadian school of depressing sad-sack comedies about dysfunctional relationships between generally annoying people whom we’re nonetheless meant to somehow feel warm and fuzzy about. These films frequently debut at Tiff, then are little heard from again beyond the realms of the CBC and Air Canada movie playlists.

Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin need to follow one simple rule if they hope to ever have a career in showbiz again, top crisis managers say: maintain a very low profile.
Susan Tellem, a partner with Tellem Grody PR, Inc. in Malibu, said the women should “just stay quiet and disappear as much as possible.”
“This is now a fraud case” she said. “This is a blatant crime that is being charged, not just an accusation. So anything she says will be part of the litigation.”
And Howard Bragman, a crisis public relations expert, suggested: “Don’t say anything publicly and listen to your attorneys.”

The 2005 Oscar nominees in Best Original Song were:
“In the Deep” from “Crash”

“Travelin’ Thru” from “Transamerica”

On December 17 the Oscar shortlists were announced in nine categories including Best Original Song, and included among the tunes that made the final 15 is “All the Stars” from “Black Panther,” which is performed and co-written by Kendrick Lamar and Sza. Could a hip-hop song like that actually win? The motion picture academy often seems rather conservative in its tastes, but when it comes to music the Oscars might actually be more progressive than the Grammys.
Granted, Lamar has won 12 Grammys, and with another 8 nominations this year he’ll probably pick up a few more. But in the top four categories where Grammy voters choose their favorites across all genres, rap can’t catch a break. Despite frequent nominations for the genre, only one rap album has ever won Album of the Year (“Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” by OutKast in 2004), and rap has never won Record or Song of the Year.

The original song Dolly Parton co-wrote and sang for the Netflix film “Dumplin’” is called “Girl in the Movies,” about a teen who dreams of being on the silver screen. It’s not autobiographical: Growing up, the country-pop superstar never envisioned herself as a movie star… and she never really saw herself as one in the decades since, either, despite some significant evidence to the contrary in the 1980s.
“I didn’t long to be a movie star. I just wanted to be a star,” she says. “I always figured it would have to do with my music. I kind of became one in a little sort of a way, with ‘9 to 5’ and ‘(The Best Little) Whorehouse (in Texas)’ and ‘Steel Magnolias.’ And now we’re getting ready to do a sequel to ‘9 to 5’ after 40 years. Dolly Parton has livened up the Oscar trail this year with her new song “Girl in the Movies,” from the Netflix movie “Dumplin.'” Following a live performance of the song for a select industry crowd (mostly journalists and Golden Globes voters) at the Four Seasons on Monday, the recording icon stopped by a screening of the film with “Dumplin'” star Danielle Macdonald to field questions from the audience.

The real Dante “Tex” Gill, sporting a three-piece suit and a mean mug, was the archetype of masculine swagger. It’s hard to imagine Hollywood sex symbol Scarlett Johansson playing such a character, especially one described in their own obituary as “short and dumpy,” but that is exactly what she intends to do in “Rub & Tug.” Johansson’s casting announcements cited Gill as a woman who dressed as a man, but Screencrush writer E. Oliver Whitney pointed out that Gill was most likely a transgender man.
Johansson’s casting prompted harsh rebukes from the trans community, which has repeatedly complained of seeing their stories co-opted by cis people in Hollywood. Johansson told Bustle through a representative: “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.”

Trace Lysette and Jamie Clayton, two of the most high profile transgender actresses working today, took to Twitter in the aftermath of Scarlett Johansson being cast in a transgender role to slam Hollywood for continuing to allow cisgender actors the chance to play transgender characters. Johansson is set to play Dante “Tex” Gill in Rupert Sanders in crime drama “Rub & Tug.” Gill operated massage parlors that served as fronts for prostitution in 1970s Pittsburgh and lived as a transgender man.
“Oh word? So you can continue to play us but we can’t play y’all?” Lysette wrote on Twitter in reaction to Johansson’s casting. “Hollywood is so fucked. I wouldn’t be as upset if I was getting in the same rooms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that’s not the case. A mess.”
Lysette is famous for co-starring on Amazon’s comedy series “Transparent.

Scarlett Johansson has rejected the idea that it is problematic for her to play a transgender character.

Scarlett Johansson’s latest film role was confirmed July 2 by Deadline when it was announced the actress would be reuniting with her “Ghost in the Shell” director Rupert Sanders for the crime biopic “Rub & Tug.” The story centers around the life of Dante “Tex” Gill, who became infamous in 1970s Pittsburgh for operating massage parlors that served as fronts for prostitution. Scarlett Johansson has officially ended Hollywood’s red carpet blackout of Marchesa, the high-end womenswear brand co-founded by Harvey Weinstein’s estranged wife, Georgina Chapman.
Johansson opted to wear a Marchesa gown to Monday night’s Met Gala, making a loud statement in one of the evening’s most understated dresses. The “Avengers” star explains that she wore Marchesa because she wanted to show her support for the two women behind the brand, Chapman and co-founder Keren Craig.
“I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful, and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers,” Johansson said in a statement to Variety, making no mention of Weinstein, who she worked with on 2008’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
Johansson’s reps tell Variety that the actress approached Chapman and Craig months ago about dressing her for the Met Gala.

When Sebastián Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman” took home the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, it made history twice: Not only was it the first Oscar win for Chile, but the first Oscar win for a film with a transgender performer in the lead. The film’s Oscars represents a historic shift for transgender actors, who for too long have seen their identities being donned like a costume by cisgender actors gunning for awards. (Think “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Transamerica, and ‘Boys Don’t Cry”).
But the win may be most historic transgender rights activists in Chile, where the international attention to the film is bolstering a long-stagnating gender identity bill. According to The New York Times, transgender rights activists in Chile are hoping to use the film’s success to advance a 2013 bill that would allow transgender people to legally change their names and gender marker on official documents.

“In a year that has reminded us more often of our divisions than our connections, this Festival’s program embraces film’s unique power to overcome differences – that connecting with stories not our own is the road into our deeply programmed human capacity for empathy and understanding,” said Cara Cusumano,...

Kendrick Lamar was skunked by the Grammys for Album of the Year again this year, with the recording academy once again voting for the most adult-contemporary-friendly option — in this case, Bruno Mars (“24K Magic”). But why wait around for music’s top prize when you can go for film’s highest honor? He co-wrote the entire soundtrack album for the new Marvel film “Black Panther.” He might actually have a better shot at the Oscars since the motion picture academy has demonstrated that it’s far more open to hip-hop music than the Grammys are. Watch Lamar’s video for “All the Stars” with Sza above.

Trans actors are at last being offered leading roles, completing their journey from the 60s underground to Oscar contention with A Fantastic Woman, starring Daniela Vega
A Fantastic Woman, Chilean director Sebastián Lelio’s best foreign language Oscar nominee, is not the first film about a trans woman to be in contention for an Academy Award. Some argue that playing a trans character is a sure-fire way to contend for a statuette – look at the nominations for John Lithgow for The World According to Garp (1982); Jaye Davidson for The Crying Game (1992); Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry (1999); Felicity Huffman for Transamerica (2005); Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club (2013) and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl (2015). What is new is that Lelio’s lead actor, Chilean actor/singer Daniela Vega, is herself trans, and was briefly in the running to become the first trans person to be nominated for best actor.
