If the perfect sports movie illuminates the fundamentals that make one fall in love with the game, there may be no better movie about baseball than Carson Lund’s Eephus. Structured solely around a single round of America’s national pastime, Lund’s debut feature beautifully, humorously articulates the particular nuances, rhythms, and details of an amateur men’s league game. By subverting tropes of the standard sports movie––which often captures peak physical performance in front of legions of adoring fans––Lund has crafted something far more singularly compelling. Rather than grand slams and no-hitters, there are errors aplenty and no shortage of beer guts and weathered muscles amongst the motley crew. Lund is more interested in examining the peculiar set of social codes that only apply when one is on the field, unimpeded by life’s responsibilities and entirely focused on the rules of the game.

Most baseball movies are not, per se, about baseball. To take some examples: The Natural is about a prodigy overcoming trauma; Eight Men Out is about greed and corruption; Bad News Bears is a foul-mouthed coming-of-age flick; Bull Durham is all about Kevin Costner’s sex appeal; Moneyball carries the sport into the information age; and Field of Dreams (Costner, again) is haunted by the ghosts of baseball past.
First-time director Carson Lund clearly had this in mind when he made his feature debut Eephus, a movie steeped in nostalgia for the game itself, as well as what it represents for a bunch of men past their prime: the long afternoons in the sun, the trash-talking at the plate, the brewskies in the cooler and the kind of camaraderie you can only find in the dugout.

Directors are lining up left and right each month to share their favorite films from the TCM lineup, and the latest is Jason Reitman. He follows Steven Spielberg going deep on “Meet Me in St. Louis,” Martin Scorsese praising “Madonna of the Seven Moons,” Guillermo del Toro making the case why overlooked “Suspicion” is top-tier Hitchcock, and so many more.
IndieWire simply loves directors sharing their favorite films and paying tribute to the directors and screenwriters behind them. And that enthusiasm comes across loud and clear in “SNL 1975” director Reitman’s picks. First up, Reitman, whose always had an ear for dialogue himself, talks about what’s so great about the patter in Barry Levinson’s “Diner.”
“[‘Diner’] is probably one of the best first movies for a filmmaker of all time,” Reitman said. “And the dialogue is delicious. You can’t look at a Quentin Tarantino movie and...

Snoop plays a former sports star who takes on losing pee-wee outfit in a charming comedy that has more than a passing resemblance to Bad News Bears
When laconic rapper-turned-actor Snoop Dogg is called on to appear in a film, he more often than not plays himself or a version thereof – and so it goes again in this salty but ultimately very wholesome sports movie. There’s even a sly parallel between the character Snoop plays and the efforts he’s made in the real world setting up an American football league for kids. Yes, his thespian range may be pretty limited, but there’s no denying Snoop has a palpable onscreen charisma and a good sense of comic timing that director Charles Stone III skilfully directs around.

Taking the inspirational sports movie template, then infusing it with so much weed and foul language that it deserves its own MPAA rating, The Underdoggs is a good example of what happens when Snoop Dogg steps into an otherwise familiar tween-age comedy to wreak havoc. The results, perhaps suprisingly, are far from disastrous and ultimately quite endearing, though parents should be forewarned of a movie that drops more f- and b-bombs than all the ordnance released during World War II.

The puckish appeal of Charles Stone III’s The Underdoggs, a new spin on The Bad News Bears, is apparent from its opening title card, which offers a warning that its R rating was well earned, that no child should watch it, and that, well, the kids you really have to worry about are the ones whose parents don’t allow them to watch R-rated films.
Snoop Dogg stars as Jaycen “Two Js” Jennings, a former high school football star whose clutch, single-handed catch during his senior-year championship game set him up for a career as a young NFL hotshot who, predictably, flamed out in a blaze of ignominy, hubris, and sativa. There have been, as of this writing, approximately 900 "Star Trek" episodes and 13 "Star Trek" motion pictures. That is, and forgive me for getting technical about this, a whole heck of a lot of "Star Trek."
Indeed, there has been so much gosh-darned "Star Trek" that the various writers have probably cycled through just about every possible type of story there is. This is the type of franchise where the exact same characters could do a "Bad News Bears" episode, a heart-wrenching drama about overcoming Ptsd, and an "Ocean's Eleven" episode over just a couple of months, and nobody in the audience ever batted an eye or thought that was weird. Heck, it's one of the main reasons why people now argue that "Deep Space Nine" is the best "Trek" show ever."

It’s a deceptively big month on Prime Video in September! To kick things off, The Wheel of Time will be back for a second season on the service, while a live-action The Boys spinoff series called Gen V will be capping off the original series content later in the month.
But there are also some interesting new projects lined up between those two biggies. On September 15, Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen star in what is sure to be a delicious tale of revenge. Wilderness, based on B.E. Jones’ novel of the same name, stars Coleman as a heartbroken wife who discovers her husband has been cheating on her after she gives up her whole life to move over to America with him and support his career.

Despite an uptick in sports movies, the days of Bull Durham, The Natural and Moneyball are long behind us
The crack of the bat. The roar of the crowd. The green grass and the brown dirt. These are the sights and sounds that bring joy to baseball fans every April, both in person and on the silver screen. Historically, baseball films are released in the spring to coincide with Opening Day, when even the most deadened fanbase can spare a smidge of romance and optimism. The Bad News Bears, Major League, Field of Dreams, Fever Pitch and 42 were all released in April. This year, there are none to be found, and that’s not a scheduling accident. A baseball film hasn’t had a significant theatrical release – in any month, let alone April – since 2016, when Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! landed with a thud at the box office.

(Welcome to The Movies That Made "Star Wars," a series where we explore the films and television properties that inspired George Lucas' iconic universe. In this edition: Peter Bogdonavich's masterpiece "Paper Moon.")
When you think of "The Mandalorian," the primary cinematic influence that comes to mind might be the Japanese classic series "Lone Wolf and Cub." The relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu is very reminiscent — at least in early seasons — of Itto Ogami and his toddler son Daigoro. The choice given to Grogu by Luke Skywalker, where he must choose between the way of the Jedi and the way of the Mandalorians, is a shot-for-shot recreation of the choice Ogami gives Daigoro in the films. He's to choose between a ball or the sword in "Lone Wolf and Cub," rather than a beskar shirt or a lightsaber. We talked about the influences of "Lone Wolf and Club" in a previous installment,...

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

With Creed III hitting movie screens and the spring weather finally about to bring people outside again, everyone begins thinking about sports. What will we play? What will we watch? It’s everyone’s favorite time of the year. The world of sports brings with it some great stories that inspire everyone’s daily life. It’s no surprise that films try to capture that and push the narrative format to give everyone a story they can cheer for.
Rudy (1993)
Easily one of the most motivating sports stories ever told. Rudy has spent his entire life being told he was too small to play football. He dreams of attending Notre Dame college and playing for the team. When his friend dies in an accident, he decides he has to chase his dream, or he may never get a chance. There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Growing up in Philadelphia, I've experienced my fair share of harsh winters. The blizzard of 1996 stands out, but there were a number of other rough years for a while too. Although, when I moved to Chicago a few years ago, I experienced a whole new level of frigid chills. It got even worse when a polar vortex delivered such sub-zero temperatures and precipitation that people were advised not to leave their houses since even the slightest bit of exposed skin could get frostbite within minutes. Seriously, despite this year being relatively tame in comparison, midwestern winters are no joke. And someone else who knew this was Walter Matthau.

“More Than Robots” is a sports film like you’ve never seen before.
Sure, it has teams and there is some fierce competition. But instead of a ball that is being passed around, “More Than Robots” follows groups of high school students who quickly assemble robots, create custom programs that control the robots and then enter their robots into battle. (It’s not exactly battle; the First Robotics competition depicted here is loosely “Star Wars” themed.) It’s pretty awe inspiring. And the kids are a ragtag, “Bad News Bears”-y outfit, no matter where in the world. It’s inspired and inspiring, odd and (occasionally) oddly emotional.
And bringing together this symphony of technology and team spirit is director Gillian Jacobs. Jacobs is a super talented, in-demand actress (she starred on six seasons of “Community” and recently appeared in Netflix’s terrific “Fear Street” trilogy of films) and she...

There’s a load of great content coming to Netflix in November, but just as is always the case, there are also a bunch of titles being removed from the streaming service at the same time. Next month, the platform is losing 53 movies and TV shows. There are some classics amongst them, too, unfortunately, so you might want to fit in a last minute rewatch before they vanish from Netflix’s library.
On the first day of November, four titles are being removed, including horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, children’s animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Gerard Butler action movie Olympus Has Fallen. 2017 horror Death House is also leaving on the 4th, while drama Into the Forest departs Netflix on the 6th and Jamie Foxx vehicle Sleepless is among those disappearing the following day.

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies and many more at Trailers From Hell. Crime is a hot topic in the movies, but be careful – you don’t always know who the criminals are.
Clay Pigeon didn’t exactly set 1971 on fire, but if it had it would have been liable for more serious crimes than artistic ones. Plus, in the pairing-wine-with-movies biz, it’s always touch-and-go when dealing with a movie involving substance abuse. The laughs don’t exactly fall out of the balcony.
This movie starred Tom Stern, who also co-directed with Lane Slate. You may know Stern as the one-time husband of Samantha Eggar, or he may be on your radar for being what IMDb calls the “Orson Welles of ‘60s biker movies.” Citizen Knucklehead, anyone?
In Clay Pigeon, he was a Vietnam vet who wanted to kick hard drugs.

The first of the month is always a big day for streaming services, as that’s when the bulk of their new content for that month tends to hit, with the rest being dished out in small batches over the following weeks. That’s especially true for Netflix, who kicked off June with a massive helping of fresh movies and TV shows on the 1st, and followed it up with a handful of new releases in the days after.
In fact, there were a whopping total of 64 new films and 18 new TV series that arrived on the streaming site this week, and the full list can be found down below:

It’s the first day of a new month, and do you know what that means? Yes, Netflix has got another batch of new content coming to its library. Today, the streaming giant has added a boat-load of classics and underrated films that you’ll want to check out. In particular, horror fans are being well-served as the selection includes a number of spine-tinglers and thrillers.
For those who like something with a psychological flavor, you’ll be pleased to know that two early 90s classics of the genre are dropping today – Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear, featuring Robert De Niro, and The Silence of the Lambs, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. Remember, the whole of the Hannibal TV series is also arriving on the service this month.

Netflix has confirmed that 47 new original movies, series, documentaries and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in June. Leading off the lineup are the debut of “Da 5 Bloods,” a film by Oscar winner Spike Lee about four Vietnam vets revisiting their past, and the second season of Ryan Murphy‘s satire “The Politician.” And just in time for Pride is season 5 of “Queer Eye.”
The documentary slate is filled with such varied films as “Spelling the Dream” about the Scripps National Spelling Bee, “Lenox Hill” about the staff of the famed New York hospital, and “Athlete A” about the sexually abuse scandal that rocked the Us gymnastics team
And in these trying times, we can take comfort in the slew of stand-up specials, including new sets by George Lopez, Jo Koy and Eric Andre, as well as such lighter fare as the Will Ferrell comedy “Eurovision Song...

With June just around the corner now, there’s a good chance that, depending on where you live, you’ll be looking to stay indoors to avoid the heat, humidity and, worst of all, summer insects. Do you like lists? Well, here’s a doozy. Below is everything coming to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime in June 2020.
Though the summer sun is starting to beat down, most of us are still being encouraged to stay indoors for Covid-19 related reasons. It’s not much fun, but at the very least, there’s an absolute ton of stuff landing in June that should distract you from the call of the beach.
Of particular note is the newly launched HBO Max, which is trying to catch the eye of potential subscribers with a red-hot first month. There’s an excellent selection of movies coming on June 1st, with horror titles like An American Werewolf in London (still the best werewolf movie ever made), Final Destinations 1-4, From Dusk til Dawn and Lifeforce.

As the summer begins to roll in it’s a time of endings for Netflix. No, Netflix isn’t going anywhere anytime soon obviously. The streamer continues to claim that its set up to churn out content through the rest of the year despite the coronavirus pandemic freeze on TV and movie production. Netflix’s new releases for June 2020, however, are highlighted by a couple of high profile finales.
13 Reasons Why premieres its fourth and final season on June 5. Before that, Fuller House is set to bow on June 2…though that franchise has been through the finale experience before so we’ll see about that. The Netflix original shows that are (presumably) in the middle of their run this month include Queer Eye (June 5), F is for Family, and The Politician (June 19).

With “Last Flag Flying” arriving in theaters, we’re taking on the not-so-simple task of ranking the movies of genre-hopping director Richard Linklater. The top titles on this list could rightfully be called modern classics, but every one of his films somehow evokes the heartfelt philosophy of his hypnotic “Waking Life”: human interaction is the highest form of spiritual communion.
20. “Bad News Bears” (2005)
The 1976 original was a true product of its time, with an all-star lineup led by Walter Matthau and Tatum O’Neal, but this unnecessary remake just felt like it was trying too hard. By 2005, the sight of an aggressively un-pc Little League coach (Billy Bob Thornton) encouraging outrageous behavior in his young team seemed less subversive than sad.
19. “Fast Food Nation” (2006)
When truth is stranger than fiction, why turn it into fiction? Linklater admirably attempted to create a multi-course meal out of Eric Schlosser’s bestselling book,...

No, Beyoncé fans, that's not the Hive we're talking about.
The Hive consisting of Bayleigh and Rockstar (voted out), Faysal, Haleigh, and Scottie has to be one of Big Brother's most ineffective alliances in the history of the series.
At this rate, they have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the game or making it to the end.

Every week fans watch as the lovable group of losers struggles to rub two brain cells together long enough to formulate a plan.

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and I’m proud to bring you more from Jim Cornette’s favorite wrestling league.
Match #1: Daga w/ Kobra Moon beat Pj Black
This was an excellent match, with a focus on technical prowess ahead of aimless stunts. Black is just getting better and better all the time. Black always puts a great emphasis on his moves and how much damage they appear to do to his opponent. I’ve always heard that Black was a very nice man and he certainly wrestles like one, despite the new sense of aggression he has adopted for this Worldwide Underground faction. Pj Black may be one of the most generous wrestlers in the ring today and we need more like him. Daga got a lot in here and came across like a devious mind in this match,...

In a career that began with “sex lies and videotape” in 1989, “Logan Lucky” is Steven Soderbergh’s 26th theatrical release. It will extend his record as the top-grossing American director to come out of the independent scene in its formative years — a period we’ll define as 1975 (Joan Micklin Silver’s “Hester Street”) through 1992 (Quentin Tarantino’s debut, “Reservoir Dogs”).
To be clear, Soderbergh’s an outlier; his billion-dollar box office dwarfs every other indie filmmaker. However, looking at the performance of his contemporaries who got their start in that indie film movement, you may be surprised at who’s on the list. (Note: “Outside wide release” means less than 1,000 screens. Also, the list doesn’t include directors like Sam Raimi and Abel Ferrara, who have independent roots but were not discovered via the film festival/arthouse pathway, or Alan Rudolph, another significant ’80s figure; he started in horror films in the early ’70s.

Seann William Scott returns in Goon: Last of the Enforcers the cartilage crunching sequel to the 2011 hockey comedy Goon, a follow-up that’s even “faster, funnier and more foul-mouthed than the original.”

In December I (foolishly) jumped into the latest Nate Heller detective story, Better Dead, by Max Allan Collins. This book has nothing to do with the Holiday Season. This book has nothing to do with making oneself better or preparing for the New Year’s challenges. In fact, this book is so enthralling it distracted me from my Yuletide tasks and annual planning. Better Dead is just a fun book. As with other adventures in this series, the author places his hero in a real-life historical hotspot, bringing to light a fascinating true-life story with new insights.
Kind of like the musical Hamilton without the rap musical and colonial wigs.
ComicMix’s “Grand Poobah”, Mike Gold, once famously quipped “if you only read one Max Allan Collins book this month, make it this one.” He was teasing about the author’s prolific writing. The talented ‘true crime’ and detective scribe produces so many books.

Be careful what you wish for.
On Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episode 10 the Evil Queen made the ultimate wish, giving us a glimpse into what the world would be like if Emma Swan had never become the Savior.
Elsewhere in the hour, we learned who the mysterious figure under the hood is — the person who is destined to end Emma's life.
There's a lot to talk about from "Wish You Were Here" so let's dive right in!
Where to begin?
Well, obviously with the Evil Queen, because let's face it — everything starts with the Evil Queen.
I wish that Emma Swan's wish to have never been the Savior be granted.

The director of films from Slacker to Everybody Wants Some!! is all enigmatic affability, concealing what is clearly an obsessive dedication to his art form
A long overdue documentary study of Richard Linklater, a film-maker whose lo-fi 90s debut Slacker pretty well reinvented “indie” as a genre, who created one of the great love stories with his Before Sunrise trilogy and whose real-time masterpiece Boyhood dominates the skyline of modern American cinema. Like Gus van Sant, Linklater has an auteur signature that he can set aside for a regular studio paycheck – and this film tactfully hints that his mainstream movies of the noughties like Bad News Bears, Fast Food Nation and Me and Orson Welles were forgivably disappointing because he had his mind on Boyhood the whole time. However, this was the time he also made very interesting movies A Scanner Darkly (2006) – and of course Before Midnight (2013).

Some baseball stories are exciting even to non-fans, and in theory, “Undrafted” should be one of them. Over 30 years ago, writer (and fantasy baseball pioneer) Daniel Okrent used a 1982 regular season Milwaukee Brewers/Baltimore Orioles game as the basis for “Nine Innings.” From the perspective of an outsider, the book offered one of the purest glimpses at the details that make the sport a rewarding watch. What Okrent did in 288 pages, writer-director Joe Mazzello tries unsuccessfully to do in 105 minutes with his new film “Undrafted.” From a inspired-by-a-true-story premise, “Undrafted” takes that one-game premise inside the dugout, watching a team of hapless amateurs stare down a crucial league playoff matchup in the wake of learning that their best player was overlooked at the Mlb Draft.
“Team” is a loose term here, as the dozen players and their accompanying, overriding personalities never really seem like a cohesive group. There are the standouts: Philip Winchester as Fotch,...

“I wasn’t drowning, I was home.”
Bran Stark stands among the dead. Watching his father, uncle, and aunt at play through the power of his second sight, he is bewitched by the idea of returning to a family lost to him forever. But when he returns unwillingly to the waking world he is confronted at once with Meera’s family, with the vast emptiness of the Far North laid out where her brother used to be. What he has is an illusion; what she faces is reality. That the episode ends with another breach of the veil between life and death, the resurrection of Jon Snow at the hands of a desperate, shaky Melisandre, is an unsettling omen at the very least.
“It is beautiful under the sea,” the Raven tells Bran in the vision. “But stay there too long, and you’ll drown.” Their exchange begins the episode...
