Couro de Gato
EdgarST5 January 2008
Made by Eryk Rocha (son of filmmakers Glauber Rocha and Paula Gaitán), with the plastic artist Tunga, "Quimera" is a very subtle and experimental reflection on the probable destiny of an ensemble of cats from all sorts: in between flashes of a bright light, as cats glide around, a man shaves himself and the skin of an animal, and the camera zooms in the eye of a cat as if trying to capture its essence (or maybe its soul), every now and then the sound of Brazilian percussion reminds us of what drums (tamborims) are made of. As it is, "Quimera" is a perfect companion piece for Joaquim Pedro de Andrade's 1961 short feature "Couro de Gato."
