Grey’s Anatomy already has cemented its place in the TV history books. Now it’s just about enhancing its legacy. But like every long-running series on broadcast, the hit medical drama also has to abide by the budget constraints imposed by parent media companies, which have been reigning in costs. As Deadline reported exclusively yesterday, Grey’s Anatomy has been asked to trim its budget for its upcoming 21st season, which will impact the cast.
Additionally, ABC this morning unveiled its fall schedule where Grey’s is shifting from 9 Pm to 10 Pm on Thursdays. Deadline asked Disney TV Group President Craig Erwich whether the moves signal a potential end game for the show.

Well, if you had tried to get us to guess the ABC 2024-25 fall season announcement, we couldn’t have predicted much of it.
There are new shows sprinkled throughout, but ABC is going almost full reality, which is a choice.
Let’s see what we’ve got to work with here.
Two new shows will interest TV Fanatics: High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson, which was delayed due to the strikes, and Doctor Odyssey, starring Joshua Jackson as a cruise ship doctor.
High Potential gets a 10/9c slot on Tuesdays after Dancing with the Stars.
Despite the relationship disaster of The Golden Bachelor, ABC is dedicating an hour and a half weekly to The Golden Bachelorette while snuggling award-winning comedy Abbott Elementary between that and a docuseries called Scamanda.
Thursdays find Doctor Odyssey after 9-1-1 and before Grey’s Anatomy.
And TV Fanatic favorites The Rookie and Will Trent? Saved for midseason.

Grey’s Anatomy is a relic by broadcast TV standards, but the long-running medical drama is about to get another shakeup.
Deadline reports that the renewal for Season 21 came with a pretty big caveat — a reduced budget.
The longer a TV series is on the air, the more costly it is to produce episodes.
Broadcast TV has always been a numbers game, and with reduced ratings across the board, changes have to be made to make shows profitable.
The first significant change is Jake Borelli’s departure.
Borelli, who played Levi Schmitt, has been a series regular for five seasons.
Levi Schmitt may get an ending
While the actor is not returning as a series regular, negotiations are underway to bring him back for a multi-episode arc during Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 to give Levi a satisfactory conclusion.

Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
Ahead of the “Bridgerton” Season 3 world premiere, the atmosphere was not unlike that of the megahit Netflix show.
The ton (New York City) was abuzz, its inhabitants eager to impress (dressed to the nines!). Heads turned and whispers rippled through Alice Tully Hall for every actor’s arrival, the same way characters bristle and murmur for their costumed counterparts.
Because “Bridgerton,” as Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said in her opening remarks, is so much more than a show. It’s a lifestyle brand, marked by the Bath & Body Works soaps and lotions adorning every bathroom; an aesthetic, shared among the evening’s Regency-inspired formalwear; and a fandom, underscored by every collective gasp, giggle, and cheer shared in the theater during Episode...

ABC will once again have Abbott Elementary as a centerpiece of its Wednesday night in 2024-25 — but it will begin the season without any companion comedies.
The Emmy-winning series will move back a half-hour to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, with The Golden Bachelorette (which will run 90 minutes each week, up from an hour for The Golden Bachelor last fall) as its lead-in. The rest of ABC’s comedy offerings for 2024-25 — including the final season of The Conners — will come in the second half of the season.
“We continue to be very dedicated to comedy. I think you’ll see that really come through in midseason,” Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview Tuesday, a few hours before Disney’s upfront presentation. “Because of the strikes [in 2023], there was a pause in some of our development plans. ABC is doubling down with Ryan Murphy on Thursday nights. The Alphabet network revealed a fall 2024 schedule on Tuesday that features the Murphy’s “9-1-1” and newcomer “Doctor Odyssey” on Thursday nights.
The move now turns the night — long the home for Shonda Rhimes’ hit “Tgit” franchises, into a bit of a “Tgim” — “Thank God It’s Murphy” — and shifts “Grey’s Anatomy” to 10 p.m.
Also, the network revealed that it is going with an “Abbott Elementary” island on Wednesdays, sandwiched between a 90-minute format for “The Golden Bachelorette” and then the unexpected, previously unannounced true crime ABC News docuseries “Scamanda.”
But don’t fret for “Abbott,” says Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich. He tells Variety that after the success of “The Golden Bachelor” in the fall, lead-in from “The Golden Bachelorette” will “position it to continue to garner both audience as well as the critical claim that it so deserves.

When watching any kind of procedural, viewers almost expect endless drama, thanks to shows like Grey's Anatomy that set the bar way too close to soap opera levels of absurdity. Perhaps that is why 911, which originally premiered on Fox but recently moved to ABC, has struck such a chord with viewers.
Fast-paced and gripping, the show explored various 911 cases, from the oddest ones to the most devastating, mass-casualty disasters. The show always had a big budget to cover all the cinematography and graphics needed, but more importantly, it had a bunch of likable characters who faced the dangers of the job together.
Who Is Taylor Kelly on 911?
No matter how much people love the atmosphere among the firefighters, paramedics, and even the dispatchers of 911, every show needs villains to balance out the good guys. Aside from the criminals and other people responsible for the cases that 911 has to deal with,...

Season 20 will be the last full one for Jake Borelli, who stars as Dr. Levi Schmitt, according to Deadline. However, don’t expect the finale, which airs on Thursday, May 30, to wrap up his story, as he is currently negotiating to appear in “several episodes” to do just that, the outlet notes. Nothing this far suggests how he could be written out, with Levi’s focus on teaching the current group of interns at Grey Sloan Memorial, though he did have a possibly telling encounter with his ex-boyfriend, Dr. Nico Kim (Alex Landi), during which he learned the other man was about to become a father with his new partner. We’ll have to see if that leads to ...

Exclusive: Jake Borelli will be departing ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy after seven years on the show, including being a series regular for the past five seasons, Deadline has learned. According to sources, Borelli is in negotiations to return next season for several episodes to wrap up the story of his character, Levi Schmitt.
Amid overall decline in linear ratings, it has become common practice for broadcast networks to ask for financial concessions on long-running series, which naturally become pricier as they age. As a high-end drama series headed into its 21st season with a large cast, most of whom have been on the show for years, Grey’s is expensive. I hear its renewal — like many other broadcast shows’ these days — came with a budget cut.
That is impacting the cast, with established stars faced with a reduction of their episodic guarantees, which means that they may be in fewer episodes next year,...

When prosthetic makeup designer Vincent Van Dyke first met with Robert Downey Jr., the two men somewhat immediately hit it off. And good thing, too, since just a couple of days later, Van Dyke heard from the producers of the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer” with the hope of signing him onto the ambitious project.
“Luckily we had that earlier meeting because we had to hit the ground running,” Van Dyke tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “It was a quick turnaround to start creating and designing these looks, and get them in front of everyone’s eyes.”

It's safe to say that some TV shows couldn't function without their main characters. No one can imagine Doctor Who without the Doctor at the center of its adventures, or Grey's Anatomy without Meredith Grey, even though Shondaland is trying to prove otherwise today with the show's 20th season.
Even if Olivia Benson's name doesn't appear in any Law & Order: Special Victims Unit titles, every single viewer now associates the show with her. Thanks to Mariska Hargitay's dedication to the role, no one has any reason to believe that she'll be leaving the show anytime soon, but some fans still fear that may happen.

Medicine is always about people. That's why Grey's Anatomy, an aspirational show about doctors, is focused on its characters and their inner workings. And over 20 seasons, viewers have found (almost) no serious reason to doubt the talent of the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes.
The group of writers under her leadership describes the characters perfectly: the motivations almost never raise questions, everyone develops according to their personal characteristics, and therefore what happens on the screen becomes easy to imagine in reality.
This is what makes Grey's Anatomy so popular: all the doctors are ordinary people with their own weaknesses and problems. That's why viewers continue to watch the show even after 20 seasons.
At the same time, however, 20 seasons is such a long time that it is sometimes hard to believe. Stability and consistency are great, but fans of medical dramas are long overdue for a breath of fresh air. In addition,...

Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Private Practice. Is there a showrunner with a higher number of long-running successful shows than Shonda Rhimes? Hardly so. That's why her 2017 deal with Netflix came as such a shock, after spending more than a decade under ABC's wing.
As fans know, Shonda's Netflix project, Bridgerton, is based on a series of pseudo-historical romance novels by Julia Quinn that tell the story of early 19th-century British high society. There are a total of eight books about the Bridgerton family, the first of which was published in 2000.
All feature the romantic liaisons of Lady Bridgerton's children, and there are (surprise!) eight of them: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth. Shonda Rhimes would not be Shonda Rhimes if she did not create interest in all aspects of her brainchild – now, with the long-awaited third season of Colin and Penelope just a few days away,...

Pinnacle Peak Pictures is bringing a slate of faith-based films to the Cannes market, including a new installment in the “God’s Not Dead” franchise.
Entitled “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust,” the film will be released theatrically in the U.S. this fall, but, like the rest of Pinnacle’s slate, foreign territories are available to buyers. The new “God’s Not Dead” film follows the series’ protagonist, Rev. David Hill (played once again by David A.R. White), who, with the help of a skilled political strategist, runs for political office on a platform of preserving “religious freedom” and healing divisions. The cast also includes Dean Cain, who appeared in the first film in the franchise and is best known for “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” as well as Isaiah Washington (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Ray Wise (“X-Men: First Class”).

The traditional pilot process may be dying out but that’s not stopping the glitz and glamor of the TV Upfronts in New York.
Traditionally, broadcast networks would be scrambling to make dozens of last minute decisions on a crop of new shows as well as heavily negotiated renewals as we head into the week of Upfronts. However, that is now largely a thing of the past as ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW continue with their year-round development strategies.
This year’s Upfronts should be slightly smoother sailing than last year’s event, which was affected by the writers strike.
But that hasn’t stopped the majority of these networks – excluding CBS and The CW – as well as some of their streaming rivals in the shape of Amazon and Netflix from using the week of Upfronts to tout their latest wares and show off their talent in front of advertisers.

Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

Unfortunately for all Chicago Fire viewers, the show's cast has undergone quite a few changes since season 1. A good half of the original characters introduced in the show's pilot have been let go.
And while some of them, like Gabriela Dawson, have been peacefully written off and sent overseas, others, like Leslie Shay and Otis Zvonecek, have met darker ends.
While NBC's firefighter hit isn't known for being as gruesome as Grey's Anatomy when it comes to killing off characters, both Shay and Otis' deaths left a big impression on viewers. While Lauren German, who portrayed Shay, almost immediately moved on to Fox's supernatural hit Lucifer, Yuriy Sardarov, who portrayed Otis, has been a bit more reserved.

In 2019, Sandra Oh simultaneously received her seventh and eighth acting Emmy nominations for “Killing Eve” (drama lead) and “Saturday Night Live” (comedy guest). Five years later, her performance bid total is set to reach an even dozen thanks to her respective lead and supporting performances in the telefilm “Quiz Lady” and the limited series “The Sympathizer.” Earning TV academy recognition for these two roles would make her the eighth woman to compete for both possible limited program acting awards at once.
In “Quiz Lady,” which premiered on Hulu last November, Oh plays Jenny Yum, a vivacious yet reckless woman who reunites with her estranged younger sister (Awkwafina) to resolve their mother’s gambling debts. “The Sympathizer,” which began airing on HBO in April, features her in the role of Sofia Mori, a 1970s Japanese American secretary who becomes entangled with a communist spy (Hoa Xuande).

However, this will not be the same Office fans watched years ago. Instead, it will be a new show in the same universe as the original series.

The balance between medical cases and touches of personal storylines continues.
The interns were mostly endearing during Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 7, but the connections to the medical cases were most compelling.
If it slipped anyone's mind that the new batch of interns has shades of the Og interns, then this installment was a reminder of how much Simone Griffith is her class' Meredith Grey.
Most of the season has focused on the interns simply navigating life at Grey Sloan.
And sometimes, we don't delve into their personal elements nearly as much as we should.
The balance between giving us more insight into these new characters and providing surface-level connections to medical cases has been challenging.
But the installment revisited not only the pain of Simone dealing with a grandmother with dementia who still looks at Simione and sees the daughter she lost but also Simone's harrowing backstory.

It’s no wonder why Fallout got renewed.
Amazon’s video game adaptation stormed onto Nielsen’s streaming list in its debut weekend, racking up a whopping 2.9B minutes viewed in its first five days on the platform.
That was over a billion minutes more than anything else that was watched on streaming the week of April 8 to 14.
It’s also Amazon’s most successful title to date, according to Nielsen, considering it surpassed Reacher’s best week by over a billion minutes as well.
Nielsen reports the audience for Fallout in its premiere weekend was 63% male, and 75% of viewers were under 50. About 70% of viewing was concentrated in the first four episodes, which likely indicates some more big weeks for Fallout ahead.
In second place, unsurprisingly, was Bluey. The kids program continues to be a big winner for Disney+ and this interval was no different. The series attracted another 1.4B minutes viewed.

Prime Video has touted the viewer response to Fallout as its second-biggest series ever worldwide over 16 days of release. In the United States (and over a shorter time period), it’s No. 1.
Fallout recorded 2.9 billion minutes of viewing time in the U.S. over its first five days, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings for April 8-14. That’s far and away the best opening for a series on the Amazon-owned Prime Video, beating Reacher’s series premiere week in early 2022 (1.84 billion minutes) by more than a billion minutes.
The series also had more than double the second-place show on the list for the week: Bluey had 1.39 billion minutes of viewing in the week leading up to and including the release of its special episode “The Sign,” which premiered on April 14.
