"Why aren't you more famous?" It's one question independent singer-songwriter and actor Alexz Johnson gets too often. "[That question is] very sweet, and it's obviously coming from a really beautiful place, but what's behind that is, 'You should be more of a success,'" the 36-year-old mother of two tells Popsugar. From 2010 until now, Johnson has released five studio albums independently. Her latest, "Seasons," came out on April 7.
For an artist with a résumé as impressive as Johnson's, it's somewhat natural to wonder why her powerhouse voice isn't dominating the airwaves. But Johnson is right where she wants to be as an artist, and she's aiming to redefine what success looks like with her new album.
"When I started the process of doing 'Seasons,' I was pregnant with my son and it was Covid still . . . I was like, 'You know what? I'm going to do a record from home.

Teens never felt more seen than in the '90s and the '00s. There were countless comedies, dramas and animated shows that helped shed light on what it was really like being a young adult at the time. However, as decades have passed by, it has been hard to keep track of all those after school hits. Recently, we were reminded just how much we loved Degrassi: The Next Generation when HBO Max announced that all 14 seasons were heading to the streamer on March 25. Whatever it takes, we're going to binge watch that entire show. But, while we wait for that release, we plan to revisit other coming-of-age gems that deserve a rewatch. Who else remembers Instant Star, the Canadian...

Before he was doing community service with Alexis on Schitt's Creek or gunslinging on Wynonna Earp, Tim Rozon was breaking hearts as Tommy Q on Instant Star. For those who didn't catch this Canadian musical-comedy in the early '00s, Instant Star followed teenage singing competition champion Jude Harrison (Alexz Johnson) as she embraced overnight fame and began working on her album. Enter Rozon as a former boybander-turned-producer, who finds himself falling for Jude. The series was a hit on The N, which also featured Degrassi: The Next Generation and South of Nowhere. And, as Rozon exclusively told E! News, he fondly looks back at his time on Instant Star. "I loved that show," he...

One of my favourite Canadian filmmakers, Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo, Pontypool) is back at Tiff with his latest film, The Husband. The film stars Maxwell McCabe-Lokos (The Tracey Fragments), as Henry, a man who is left to care for his infant son after his wife is imprisoned for cheating on him with a minor. Tiff describes The Husband as “Slyly funny, with the structure of an Italian sex comedy of the 1960s”. For decades, McDonald has been producing, editing, and directing in both television and film, including Degrassi: The Next Generation, Instant Star, Twitch City and Queer as Folk. He’s also directed music videos for notable bands and eventually set up his own production company, named Shadow Shows. He might not be a household name like David Cronenberg, but his films have gained him considerable critical acclaim, and a cult following over the years. Watch the clip for The Husband below.

It’s true; no matter what certain networks may claim about their “winter finales,” winter doesn’t actually start until December 21, and isn’t over until March 20. Syfy, at least, understands this, and has announced their appropriately-titled winter schedule accordingly.
Happily this means that, starting on Monday, January 14, 2013, we will have some great television to get us through the cold months, including the return of Being Human and Lost Girl, and the premiere of Continuum, and later in the week, the return of Ghost Hunters and Face Off.
Here’s the schedule of premieres, along with series synopses:

Canadian TV series "Lost Girl", which also airs on Syfy here in the States, has lined up a pretty impressive guest star for its upcoming Season 3: none other than ass-kicker supreme Linda Hamilton.
TVLine reports that Hamilton (The Terminator, "Beauty and the Beast") will guest star in Season 3's tenth episode as Acacia, “a tough, sexy, and ruthless assassin who has enjoyed a storied and deadly career.”
Season 2 of "Lost Girl" is currently finishing out its run on Syfy by moving to Friday nights at 10:00 Pm, and Season 3 will air on both Syfy and Showcase in 2013 (Syfy says January while Showcase just says winter).
Synopsis:
Anna Silk (Being Erica) stars as seductress Bo, a Succubus (a powerful female entity in folklore) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door – until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.

Of course, for the most part I only know of Lost Girl from its U.S. airing, but I’m a fan, and Linda Hamilton showing up is just too cool.
She’ll be guest-starring as an assassin no less, and it ought to be a rather fun trip. Call me crazy, but this show just gets better and better, and I love to see things coming south.
Are you a fan of the show, and is this a good move?
Check out all the info below.

Nick at Nite's teen soap Hollywood Heights airs every weeknight, telenovela-style. The show, about a pop star and his No. 1 fan, dragged in its first nine episodes — might a songwriting contest unite these two? — but then Friday's installment gave us the gift we've been waiting for: James Franco! Heights makes the late, lamented Instant Star look like a densely plotted masterpiece, but Franco as a Xanadu fan earns the show a pass for at least a few more episodes.

If you're a fan of the show, note that on July 20th, "Lost Girl" will move from Mondays at 10:00 Pm (Et/Pt) to Fridays at 10:00 Pm.

Excellent news about a fun, entertaining supernatural crime show with some cool creatures, a fair amount of sex and terrific chemistry between the characters. Hopefully you’ve been catching Lost Girl on Syfy, Mondays at 10/9c. The show is Syfy‘s only “acquired” scripted series. It’s a Canadian production and has been broadcast there with great success and rabid fans, if my international Twitter feed is any indication.
It was renewed for a third season in Canada back in December, before Season 1 debuted here on Syfy in January. Syfy began airing Season 2 the week after Season 1 concluded, and Season 2 is still rolling out now. It’s great news that we’ll be seeing the third season here as well. Here’s the press release:

In 2009, Alexz Johnson was on her way to becoming a rockstar, just like her TV persona Jude Harrison. After starring in the Canadian television series "Instant Star," Johnson was signed to Epic Records. Things looked promising for the young singer, who had recorded a debut album with the label. However, when Epic started to restructure their artists, Johnson was subsequently dropped from the label, and her debut album was never released.
"It was an amazing experience," Johnson told HuffPost Entertainment. "I was even offered a part on '90210,' but I turned it down because I really wanted to go on tour with this record. Then it never ended up getting a release. I waited about 10 months, but the head of the label, who signed me, wasn't there anymore, and it never got released."
Some artists may have given up, but Johnson, 25, is doing things her own way. After being dropped,...

Well, there’s a much bigger audience for this news than there was when I mentioned that the second of Lost Girl was coming, so hopefully there are a lot of you out there that are glad to hear that Season 3 is getting underway.
It’s timely news as well, now that Syfy kicked off Eureka! last night, which hopefully gave Lost Girl even more of a boost. It’s also timely, because I know there are some folks out there who started to wonder when Syfy began talking about Season 2 of a rebroadcast show that didn’t actually have a Season 3 yet.
I love Syfy for airing the show, but it’s tricky for some fans who may find themselves unsure how much they want to invest in a show, when the network you’re watching it on isn’t really in control of what happens.
At any rate,...

Thus far we've totally dug on everything we've seen coming out of the camp of Casey Walker's A Little Bit Zombie, but this latest trailer has us sold hook, line, and stinker! I know, bad pun; but damn, if you ever smelled a corpse up close, you'd be laughing. Then retching. Then hoping nobody noticed it was you who made such a mess.
From the Press Release
The Victoria Film Festival has selected the romantic zombie comedy A Little Bit Zombie by first-time feature film director Casey Walker as the Canadian Gala taking place on February 4th at the Odeon Theatre in beautiful downtown Victoria, British Columbia.
“We were pretty shocked that our little zombie movie was selected to be the Gala. It was while living on Vancouver Island in the 90s that I decided to go to film school so it’s kinda awesome to be going back...

Did you hear the one about the werewolf, the ghost and the vampire? Well, unlikely roommates Josh, Sally and Aidan will return on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, when Syfy premieres Season 2 of Being Human.
The sophomore series’ return date was but one in a flurry of announcements the cabler made on Tuesday.
Syfy also revealed that Lost Girl, the supernatural series it acquired in the spring, will lead out of Being Human, also on Jan. 16. The Canadian production stars Anna Silk (The Ghost Whisperer) as Bo, a young woman who had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl...

Kirsten Dunst left rather large shoes to fill when it came to the iconic role of Mary Jane Watson in "Spider-Man." So big, in fact, that the newest movie, "The Amazing Spider-Man," opted to go the Gwen Stacy story route.
Not so for Activision's new video game featuring the great webbed one. "Smallville" and "Into the Blue 2" actress Laura Vandervoort took on the voiceover gig as M.J. for the game, which also features the voices of Val Kilmer and Katee Sackoff, and approached it rather differently than Dunst, she told NextMovie during San Diego Comic-Con.
But talking for iconic characters isn't all this sci-fi mainstay has been up to. You'll see quite a bit of the blonde beauty in 2012 – she stars opposite Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in "This Means War" and Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg in Seth MacFarlane's "Ted."

O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we'll soon see the dead rise in Casey Walker's Little Bit Zombie.
Confused? It's just a little bit of news about the next project from Canada featuring the undead: Little Bit Zombie starring Crystal Lowe ("Smallville"), Kristopher Turner ("Instant Star"; pictured right), and Shawn Roberts (Resident Evil: Afterlife), in which Turner plays a company exec who becomes infected by a virus during a bachelor party, forced to avoid an obsessed zombie hunter and his Bridezilla-to-be (Lowe).
Per The Hollywood Reporter the indie genre film from Cave Painting Pictures, to shoot in June in Sudbury, Ontario, will also star Kristen Hager ("Being Human" Us), Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, Immortals), and Neil Whitely (Red, Repo Men). Christopher Bond and Trevor Martin wrote the film’s script while director Walker shares a producer credit with John Griffith.

Laura Vandervoort is out of this world.
The Canadian beauty struck a chord with viewers on the drama 'Instant Star' before taking flight as Clark Kent's Kryptonian cousin Kara on 'Smallville.'
Still in the sci-fi world, and now back as lizard visitor Lisa on 'V,' Vandervoort spoke to TV Squad about being an alien princess, superheroes, and missing home.

HollywoodNews.com: Canadian actor Kyle Riabko has been cast as the new love interest for “90210″’s newly gay main character in Season 3, reports Michael Ausiello.
Riabko is perhaps best known as a stage veteran (having succeeded Jonathan Groff as Melchior in the national touring cast of Broadway musical “Spring Awakening” and more recently starred in “Hair”), but also featured in a guest turn on “Instant Star.” He is also a musician in his own right.
No official word on which current male cast member will come out with Riabko as his love interest, but After Elton claims Silver’s beau Teddy will be the Beverly Hills boy to switch teams when “90210″ returns September 13.

While it's still in post-production, New Year's trailer has been online for quite a while. For the moment, a release date (or peperhaps a presence at the next Toronto International Film Festival) has yet to be announced.
According to New Year's Facebook fan page, the story goes like this:
A group of 20-something “Gen Y”-ers reunite at a New Year’s Eve bash in middle-class suburbia. Numbed by the 9-to-5 conformity of real life after university, the party provides a welcome escape full of drinking, smoking, making-out, and bag-tag. But when a near-death experience, a pregnancy, and the appearance of past rivals disrupt the night, each must take a crash course in growing up or risk succumbing to a life of false comfort and complacencyFinally, the film was directed by Phil Borg. Kaley Cuoco and Caroline Rhea are set to star in Fat Like Me, an original movie for Lifetime.
Inspired by the true story of New York teen Ali Schmidt, who went undercover for a 2003 network news special on obesity, the film tells the story of an attractive, athletic high school junior (Cuoco) who experiences firsthand the prejudice and heartbreak overweight teens face when she dons a fat suit as part of a documentary film project.
Rhea, host of The Biggest Loser, co-stars as the girl's mother.
"This story speaks from a young person's point of view about the unconscious judgments we make about appearances, even towards our own family members," Lifetime vp original movies Libby Beers said. "With their touches of humor and vulnerability, Kaley and Caroline are perfect portraying this sensitive connection between girls and their mothers on this highly charged topic."
"Fat" was written by Michelle Lovretta (Instant Star), with Doug Barr (Lifetime's For the Love of a Child) on board to direct.
