The Lion King – Featuring the voices of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala and Donald Glover as Simba, Disney’s “The Lion King” is directed by Jon Favreau. © 2019 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved. When Disney made the original animated version of The Lion King, the studio invested heavily in the film’s music, enlisting Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice for the film’s original songs and Hans Zimmer for its score. Of course, it was an investment that paid off handsomely — the soundtrack album has sold more than 7 million copies, and all four of The Lion King’s Oscar nominations were for the film’s music. When the studio decided to remake the film in 2019, director Jon Favreau was faced with a lot of choices about how he wanted to make his film different than the original. At the time of the film’s release, Favreau told us he realized that,...

Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon made sure to carve out some time to focus on their upcoming animated movies. We’ve already covered Inside Out 2, but CinemaCon audiences were also treated to teasers for Mufasa: The Lion King and Moana 2.
Director Barry Jenkins took the stage to promote the Lion King prequel, adding that he had seen the original Disney animated movie over 200 times and knew he had to take the gig. “When the script came to me I was fascinated by watching these complex people dealing with complex emotions…this film explores Mufasa rise to become the heroic king that we know,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins wanted to make a movie that tackled the same issues as the first, hoping that it would help a new generation of children become who they really are. The teaser trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King then began with those iconic notes from...

Actress Olivia Colman has revealed that she was very nervous the night she won her Oscar.
Colman has shared that she had to take a beta blocker to calm down.
The actress, 50, also revealed that she ordered a high neck dress to hide a huge rash.
The actress states that the rash appears when she is stressed, reports ‘Mirror.co.uk’.
Colman won the award in 2019 for ‘The Favourite’, the movie in which she played Queen Anne.
The actress said in a new book: “I had been really against anyone talking about it as I didn’t like the pressure. I had half a beta blocker because I was so nervous. It took away all my fear. I shouldn’t recommend that, but it was great.”
As per ‘Mirror.co.uk’, the pills slow down the heart.

When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry married in 2018, they made their day uniquely theirs. They shared how their two lives merged in a ceremony filled with passion and inspiration. However, details regarding their private reception for family and friends later in the evening remained under wraps until the couple spilled details in Netflix’s Harry & Meghan. A fun fact included their non-traditional wedding song that Meghan said left her “spinning like a whirlwind.”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s untraditional wedding song
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding song was significant. It also wasn’t traditional.
The couple wanted to share a moment as husband and wife that reflected their personalities. Therefore, they chose a rather untraditional first wedding dance.
In a clip from the Netflix series Harry & Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex revealed they wanted the music for their reception to be “fun.” She added, “Even our first dance.

Disney Animation might be wishing for a crystal ball as as it decides which song from their upcoming feature Wish to submit for Oscars consideration. The Oscars’ Nov. 1 deadline comes weeks ahead of the Nov. 22 release date for the film, voice starring Ariana DeBose as young protagonist Asha and Chris Pine as villainous King Magnifico. The date means the studio could face a potential conundrum, not unlike the one its experienced in 2022 when best animated feature winner Encanto was a contender.
When the 2022 Oscar nominations for best original song were announced, Encanto‘s ballad “Dos Oruguitas” got a nom, but “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” — which went on to become the studio’s biggest hit ever from a movie, sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks — did not. It left many scratching their heads, but the reason, it turned out, was that Disney Animation didn’t submit “Bruno” for consideration.

Following its surprise 2022 Emmy win for Best Variety Series Directing, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is out of the running for the same prize this year, leaving an opportunity for “Saturday Night Live” to bounce back and achieve its 12th victory in the category. It does, however, face several formidable challengers, including “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” the host of which once starred on “The Daily Show,” which notably halted a “Saturday Night Live” success streak in 2015.
“Saturday Night Live” is the only former winner in this directing lineup, while “The Problem with Jon Stewart” stands as the only new nominee. The three other returning contenders are “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which have now amassed a collective total of 18 mentions in this category.

The Lion King is easily one of the most successful projects Elton John has been involved with. Not only is it considered one of Disney’s best soundtracks, but it also earned John his first Academy Award. It was a departure from John’s standard material since he had never written music for the stage or screen at that time in his career. It was also a shift for him, and one song from the Disney film made him question what he was doing.
‘Hakuna Matata’ from ‘The Lion King’ made Elton John question his career
Disney had a ton of success in the early 1990s with hit movies such as Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. In 1994, the studio would release The Lion King, an animated musical that was their most successful film for a long time. Part of The Lion King’s success was due to its remarkable soundtrack,...

Back in 2004, Jennifer Hudson made her national television debut as a fan-favorite contestant on American Idol Season 3. Unfortunately, she didn’t win the season — but she didn’t need to. Hudson went on to become an Egot-winning sensation in music, theater, and film/TV. Here’s what Hudson did with Disney before her big break.

Hudson auditioned for American Idol in 2004 at the age of 21. Not long before that, she worked as a performer on a Disney cruise ship. Hudson once shared the details of her pre-Idol gig in an interview with W magazine, revealing that she played “Calliope the muse in Hercules: The Muse-ical,” as well as “the ‘Circle of Life’ soloist.”

It’s been almost 20 years since Jennifer Hudson was eliminated from “American Idol,” but at this point, she has no regrets about her final song choice. The singer told her former judge Simon Cowell that the song that got her eliminated from the show is actually the reason she got her breakout role in “Dreamgirls,” which then earned her an Oscar.
Hudson kicked off her new talk show “The Jennifer Hudson Show” this week, welcoming Cowell as her first guest. During their conversation, Hudson asked for his perspective on things from the night she got booted from the competition. Cowell noted that he wasn’t a fan of the theme for the week — “Barry Manilow Week” — and wished that it had been different, so Hudson could’ve sung a song more suited for her.
Cowell then turned the table on the host, asking whether she even would change the song,...

Willie Spence headed into Disney Night as the clear frontrunner in our “American Idol” winner predictions for season 19. He had overtaken early favorite Grace Kinstler in our poll and was widely expected to become the second Black man to win this talent competition (Ruben Studdard took the season 2 title over Clay Aiken way back in 2003). But while Willie (and Grace) made it into the Top 7, they face a new challenger for the season 19 championship: Arthur Gunn.
This talented singer/songwriter fell short in season 18 of “American Idol,” losing a close vote in the final to Just Sam. But Gunn was thrown a lifeline by the producers who invited him and nine other also-rans from season 18 back to compete for one slot in the season 19 Top 10. They all got to sing one song on a special episode that aired on April 19.

The importance of friendships has been exacerbated over the past twelve months. Where our own walk along the train tracks or trip to The Prancing Pony has been replaced by a Zoom quiz, or shouting match with multiple windows full of people holding a wine glass. All struggling to find a new way to tell you what they’re having for dinner, ten months into the same conversation.
And so cinema has been there when we needed it most. A holding card for the real world, a place to find comfort while hanging out with the best friendships forged on film. Whether that’s chasing One-Eyed Willie’s treasure, or dancing to Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time After Time’.
While we’re on the subject of ‘Time’, and the fact we’ve had plenty of it on our hands, it has afforded us the opportunity to make some new cinematic acquaintances,...

The Disney remakes just keep coming, and so far, it's easy to divide them into two overall types: translations and adaptations. On the one hand, you have the remakes that hew very closely to the originals; on the other, the movies that take the basics of the original and spin it into something somewhat new. So which of these approaches works better?
Translating Into Live Action
The brighter, shinier approach to the remakes is also the one that tends to get more attention: essentially remaking the animated movie, shot for shot, but with some extra padding added in there and some lip service paid to female empowerment and modernization. This approach, most clearly seen in Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, but also the underlying approach to Aladdin, leans heavily on nostalgia more than anything else. Entire sequences are remade shot by shot, which is fun on the first watch,...

Carole Baskin survived last week’s elimination on “Dancing with the Stars,” but you can’t say the judges didn’t pounce to boot her with a unanimous vote when she landed in the bottom two again on Monday. But she does not have her claws out for them.
“I don’t feel shocked at all,” Baskin told “Entertainment Tonight” about her elimination. “The people who stayed on the show can really, really dance, and that’s what the show is all about.”
The “Tiger King” star kept up with her cat theme for the third week in a row, performing a samba with Pasha Pashkov to “Circle of Life” from “The Lion King” (1994) for Disney Night. The judges commended her for her effort, but noted how the dance was too slow to resemble a proper samba and had virtually no rolls. She scored a 12, just one point higher than...

I’ll say this much for Carole Baskin: she knew her brand on “Dancing with the Stars” and leaned into it with good humor. Known for her devotion to exotic cats on “Tiger King” (and accused of less savory things in the true-crime documentary series), she gave feline-themed performances in all three weeks she spent in the competition. So it was fitting that she ended her run on “Disney Night” dressed in a head-to-toe lion costume for her routine to “Circle of Life” from “The Lion King.” Watch it above.
Baskin got off on the wrong foot this season, earning the lowest score in the season premiere episode for her “Eye of the Tiger” paso doble. The next week she improved enough with her Viennese waltz that the judges decided to keep her in the competition after she landed in the bottom two (they booted Charles Oakley instead). But...

Dancing With the Stars has made a lot of changes for its latest season — but the two hours of corporate synergy known as Disney Night? That’s here to stay.
Per tradition, Monday’s episode of the ABC series found couples dancing to beloved Disney songs, complete with themed costumes, cameos from animated characters and, naturally, plenty of plugs for Disney’s latest offerings. (Pixar’s Soul is coming to theaters Nov. 20, in case you hadn’t heard!) (Ah, movies getting released on schedule, in an actual theater. Remember that?)

“I was actually surprised that Carole was in the bottom two considering the fact that she was one of the more high-profile celebrities when the cast was announced,” says Cordell Martin about “Tiger King” subject Carole Baskin‘s near-elimination on “Dancing with the Stars” at the end of “First Elimination” night. Martin discussed the first ouster with me and Jeffrey Kare. Watch our discussion above.
See‘Dancing with the Stars” Kaitlyn Bristowe is ‘nervous’ about performing with her ankle ‘still so sore’
Martin expected Baskin to advance safely through the early weeks of the competition like other controversial figures in seasons past — remember Sean Spicer? So he gives credit to fans for actually voting in line with the judges scores. Baskin was at the bottom of the leaderboard with Charles Oakley, and “between those two, you pretty much had to choose the lesser of two evils,” says Kare regarding their low-scoring dance routines.

It’s the most synergistic time of the year: Disney Night on “Dancing with the Stars!” And don’t worry, Carole Baskin will continue her feline theme with “The Lion King.” Because who didn’t see this coming?
The “Tiger King” star will perform the samba to “Circle of Life” on Monday, so this could be, um, interesting. How many rolls will Pasha Pashkov toss in here? And how will they recreate the iconic opening (because you know they will)?
Two dances will be performed the first time this season: the Charleston by Justina Machado and Sasha Farber, and the Argentine tango by Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson.
Kaitlyn Bristowe has the rumba, which ought to be slightly easier on her bum ankle.
Most of the Disney movies and songs are well-known classics — and one will definitely make you cry, so get the Kleenex now: “Married Life” from “Up,” to...

Beyonce’s visual album “Black Is King,” now streaming on Disney Plus, is truly a visual feast, filled with fashion moments to celebrate as it celebrates Blackness, motherhood and womanhood. It’s a celebration of Black ancestry and Black diaspora.
The film opens with a whisper into a baby boy’s ear and his journey downstream, which mirrors that of Moses. The opening reflects that of “The Lion King’s” “Circle of Life” opening as the boy is soon rescued by Beyonce and we see the first of her many looks that were created to tell the story of “Black Is King.”
Stylist Zerina Akers, who has collaborated with the singer for more than six years, helped curate the visuals. Together they created over 70 looks, bringing together renowned designers and Black independent designers. From cowhide to satin, Akers breaks down some key looks from “Black Is King.”

The Duchess of Sussex has provided the voiceover – including plenty of unverifiable comment – for this sugary documentary about elephant migration
Last autumn, before she and her husband made it into their current Californian lockdown, Meghan Markle recorded the narration for this lavish new documentary from the Disneynature production unit, streaming on Disney+, her fee being a donation to the Elephants Without Borders conservation charity working in Botswana. The film shows the annual, dramatic migration of an elephant herd across the Kalahari in search of food and drinking water, moving from Botswana’s Okavango Delta in its dry season, heading for the Zambezi and the Victoria Falls: the last being an awe-inspiring phenomenon which Meghan matches with her own spectacular torrents of schmaltz. She takes to Disney-narration like an anthropomorphic duck to water. “For elephants, family is everything! In this tight-knit group, someone always has your back!”

Do you want to build a snowman? Or how about just remember the entire storied history of songs from Disney movies in all of five minutes? Jimmy Fallon and Kristen Bell kinda did both on Tuesday.

Disney’s recent reboot of The Lion King surprised absolutely no one by dominating the box office this summer. Live-action remakes are basically printing money for the studio right now. However, not everyone is happy that classic films are being reimagined so often by those in charge. Several of the animators from the original Lion King are especially displeased by the 2019 flick. A few even say that they refuse to go watch the new movie in theaters.
David Stephan worked on the opening “Circle of Life” sequence back in 1992, as well as the design of the hyenas back in 1994 and had this to say in regards to the feature:
“If you polled the crew of the original Lion King, most of them would say, ‘Why? Did you really have to do that?’ It kind of hurts… It’s sort of sad that the stockholder is now in the room deciding what movies get made.

Warning: I expect it’s unlikely but if you haven’t seen The Lion King then this retrospective contains massive spoilers.
To say that The Lion King is a classic Disney movie feels like an understatement. It’s widely considered one of the best movies that Disney has ever made. When it comes to the films made during the Disney renaissance then this is the one that probably defined that era the most. Recently, The Lion King has become the latest in a long line to receive the live-action (or CGI) treatment. Reactions to this adaptation has been mixed to say the least. I haven’t seen it yet so I can’t give a proper opinion on it but from what I hear, it’s practically the same as the animation except more visually stunning for this generation of moviegoers. I’ll go out on a limb and theorise...

Disney’s remake of The Lion King is a massive hit with audiences. It’s grossed over $1.04 billion worldwide since opening and boasts a glowing A CinemaScore rating. But animators behind the 1995 original are divided over the film.
According to a new story from HuffPost, some of the makers of the 1995 original movie aren’t thrilled about director Jon Favreau’s CGI approach, while others have no problem with it. The outlet reached out to 13 animators who worked on the film and six responded to them.

Disney’s “The Lion King” remake has dominated the worldwide box office with over $1 billion in less than a month, but it has rubbed some of the animators who worked on the 1994 movie the wrong way. HuffPo reached out to 13 original “Lion King” animators to get their thoughts on Jon Favreau’s photorealistic remake, many of whom declined to comment. One animator speaking on anonymity said, “I will only get myself in trouble if I comment on the ‘other’ version.” Another animator added, “There is a huge resentment against these 3D remakes from the original 2D crews. Maybe if we got any kind of royalties it would be different.”

Of all the seemingly live-action shots in “The Lion King,” only one is real, and it’s the first shot of the movie. Director Jon Favreau tweeted this weekend, “There are 1490 rendered shots created by animators and CG artists. I slipped in one single shot that we actually photographed in Africa to see if anyone would notice. It is the first shot of the movie that begins ‘The Circle of Life.'”
The otherwise completely CG movie — which IndieWire called “a disastrous plunge into the uncanny valley” — boasts extremely photorealistic animals, and yet this opening shot of the setting sun, as “The Circle of Life” vaults from the screen and right into your nostalgia center, is the only moment that Favreau and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel actually shot. IndieWire recently interviewed Deschanel about achieving the film’s naturalistic look.

“The Lion King” soundtrack is feeling the love tonight, with both the original 1994 and the latest 2019 albums seeing a 50% Spotify streaming spike in the last week.
The Disney remake opened with $191 million last weekend, and the property’s songs new and old are reaping dividends. For the newest iteration, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” with Beyoncé and Donald Glover tops the streaming count, followed by “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata.” Nostalgic listeners have gone a different direction by crowning “Just Can’t Wait to Be King” as the most-streamed song from the 1994 soundtrack.
The new soundtrack surprisingly has an older demographic. For the 1994 album, 18-24-year-olds constitute the plurality with 28% of the streaming. The 2019 soundtrack’s biggest demographic, on the other hand, is the 25-29 age group with 30% of the streaming.

Nine days before the new Lion King remake hit theaters, Disney released a clip from the “Hakuna Matata” scene in which a CGI-rendered Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa sing the beloved showtune with the facial expressiveness of a Real Housewives cast after two decades worth of intensive botox treatments. The clip suggested that The Lion King would be a soulless cash grab at best, a crime against humanity at worst. It also made it clear that the remake would never come close to eclipsing the cultural cachet of the 1994 original.

Chicago – The latest tendency of Walt Disney Pictures to make live action remakes of their classic cartoons should have stopped at “Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The last three, “Dumbo,” “Aladdin” and now “The Lion King” subtract from their source cartoons, and the King is downright weird.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
But there is a caveat … it is “The Lion King” and it is beloved. The characters and the songs are still there, and those who are being introduced to the story and songs will get the lion’s share of hopefulness. But the cartoon is much better and more suited to this fable of the Circle of Life. This remake is distracting. By making the animals look like real life, it gave me an underlying element of uneasiness, as if stealing from nature is the crime of this version. The animals can’t be manipulated too much, and so have...

Disney has released a few new clips for Jon Favreau’s upcoming remake of The Lion King. Those clips include
the iconic "Circle of Life" sequence with Rafiki and Simba. The second is called “Find Your Roar” which features Scar taking Simba into the canyon to lure his dad in so Scar can kill him. The third clip features a new rendition of "Hakuna Matata." The fourth clip show Timon and Pumbaa meet Simba for the first time. The final video shows a comparison of the animated version of "Hakuna Matata" with the new version.
I had the opportunity to see The Lion King already and I’ll have my review up for it later today. It’ll be interesting to see what fans think of the film, but in the end it’s going to make Disney a ton of money. This movie is going to be a box office hit!

From the ecstatic Zulu chant that opens the film — “Nants ingonyama bagithi baba!” — to the thundering drumbeat that ends it, director Jon Favreau’s exhilarating live-action take on “The Lion King” hews closer to the Walt Disney animated masterpiece than any of the studio’s recent remakes. Technically, “live action” is the wrong way to describe the movie — it’s more a cover version, really — which is every bit as animated as the 1994 original, and leagues beyond Favreau’s 2016 “The Jungle Book” update in terms of how breathtakingly photo-realistic the visual effects work looks.
At times, the movie mimics the earlier Disney toon practically shot for shot — as in the presentation of baby Simba on Pride Rock and the spectacular wildebeest stampede that endangers him as a cub — so much so that Favreau didn’t need to change a note when scoring these sequences. That raises the inevitable question, “Why bother?...

The image fades up on a peaceful savannah, the just-rising sun giving everything a rich, buttery glow, and then that music hits: the unforgettable vocal of composer Lebo M that kicks off “Circle of Life,” the masterful fusion of African and pop music that heralds the start of Disney’s 1994 animated landmark, The Lion King. But this is 2019, not 1994, and a recreation of that same shot with that same musical cue now launches director Jon Favreau’s new remake--still animated--of the same beloved tale.
The effect is undoubtedly still powerful. Following his similar take on The Jungle Book in 2016, Favreau’s reboot of The Lion King opening instantly triggers a wave of nostalgia that re-emphasizes how ingrained in pop culture the sounds and sights of that 1994 touchstone have...

Make no mistake: “The Lion King” is an animated movie. Almost 100 percent. Only one shot, teased director Jon Favreau ahead of the Hollywood world premiere Tuesday night, was filmed live. Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel confirmed that it was the first thing they filmed on location in Africa. And it’s a gorgeous shot — but the whole film is photo-real gorgeous, and made within a digital world.
What Favreau and his “Jungle Book” VFX master Rob Legato have achieved with global squadrons of animators from Oscar-winner Mpc Film is an astonishing gamechanger. As IndieWire reported during production, “The Lion King” marks the first keyframe-animated movie shot on a virtual reality set with a live-action aesthetic.
The results are stunning. Aesthetically, Favreau was able to pull together naturalistic animation of wild animals moving their mouths, with voice actors speaking in English and breaking into song. This could have gone wrong in so many ways,...

Elton John is going to face some stiff competition in this year’s Oscars race: Elton John.
He’ll have two tunes in competition for the Academy Award for best original song this year. The just announced track listing for the “Lion King” soundtrack reveals he and lyricist Tim Rice did write a new end-titles number for the upcoming remake, titled “Never Too Late,” which he also performs with the help of an African choir.
John was already an early contender in the Oscar song sweepstakes with “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” which he and Bernie Taupin wrote to go over the closing credits of his biopic, “Rocketman.” That number, set in a bouncy retro-Motown style, was performed as a sort of identical-twins duet between John and his screen portrayer, Taron Egerton.

At Disney’s first CineEurope presentation since it acquired Fox, execs offered a select look at the combined slate here in Barcelona this evening. The session, which followed on from the combined CinemaCon presentation in April, included a first-ever (work-in-progress) trailer for live-action adaptation Mulan, new scenes from Frozen 2, extended footage from Terminator: Dark Fate (which Paramount has domestically) and a surprise guest in the form of Tom Hanks who was introduced by Cathleen Taff, Disney’s President of Theatrical Distribution, Franchise Management and Business & Audience Insights.

"Reality vs expectations," Kevin joked, posting a gallery with the hazy picture followed by the clear shot. Harry also posted the photos, adding, "This was a fun reunion and all but where did my legs go in this pic?"
