If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

A horse has died during the production of season two of Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, leading to a predictable outcry from PETA, who says there’s no reason it should have occurred.
In a statement from Amazon Studios, a spokesperson said, “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a production horse died on 21st March…The incident took place in the morning whilst the horse was being exercised prior to rehearsals. The trainer was not in costume and filming had yet to commence. Both a veterinarian and a representative of the American Humane Association were present at the time. The independent necropsy has confirmed that the horse died of cardiac failure.” In short, the horse’s death on the set of The Rings of Power was not a result of any cruel punishment. This is also the first time the company that...

July is the month that North America goes back to the movies in earnest. There have already been some theatrical release of note this summer, but as everyone knows the blockbuster movie season doesn’t get started until a Marvel movie premieres. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for July 2021, Disney+ is offering up some options for those who prefer to stay home.
In addition to arriving in theaters on July 9, Black Widow will premiere on Disney+ as well. Disney+ subscribers can purchase the first Marvel movie released since 2019 for $29.99. Judging by the early buzz, that “Premier Access” price may be worth it. Disney+ is keeping the original summer movie parade going in July with The Rock’s latest action film, Jungle Cruise, premiering on July 30.

One of the biggest selling points of Disney Plus is that it would grant you access to Disney’s impressive back catalogue. Aside from its animated classics, the Mouse House owns a huge variety of other properties through its various subsidiaries, most notably Marvel and Star Wars. So, it’s a bit disappointing that Disney Plus seems to be following the lead of its competitors and not just adding, but removing titles each month. And naturally, their subscribers aren’t very happy.
One of the main reasons other services like Netflix remove titles from their platform is that they’ve lost the licensing rights to the show/movie, but Disney has no such excuse. Still, if you’re a Disney Plus subscriber, you now no longer have access to the following movies ‘just because’:
Home Alone
Home Alone 2
The Sandlot
Dr. Dolittle

Remember all the way back to yesterday when we wrote about Friends leaving Netflix? Well… another day, another round of outrage over a streaming site removing content.
Disney Plus has removed Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and many other titles from their library as of this week. Friends leaving Netflix on January 1st was expected, but Disney Plus essentially putting their content “back in the vault” without warning is curious. And the fans are not happy about it, as evidenced by the Tweets below.
@disneyplus what happened to Home Alone and Home Alone 2? We watched them for the last 2 weeks and now they’re gone. Do you guys remove things at different times? I thought it was unlimited streaming of all things Disney all the time.

Let's celebrate the Quarter-Century mark of one Armie Hammer... (happy birthday!) also known as Armand Douglas Hammer. 'He's 6'5", 220, and there's two of him.' Well, actually just one. But his twinned Social Network role as Cameron and Tyler, "the Winklevii", sure doubled tripled quadrupled okay greatly multiplied the size of his acting career. Hammer has the Prince Charming role in Tarsem Singh's upcoming Untitled Snow White picture but we'll next see him in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar as Clyde Tolson, the alleged longtime lover / official longtime employee of Leonardo DiCaprio's J Edgar Hoover. So there's two of Hammer this time too in a sense.
Just for fun given his newness on the scene, I thought we'd look at how Armie has been introduced in each of the feature films he has made thus far (excluding Billy Graham the Early Years which I couldn't find. Inbetween the...

Most of us recognize Ryan Kwanten as Jason Stackhouse from the hit guilty pleasure–fest that is HBO's True Blood. Some fans may know his voice from Zack Snyder's Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole or smaller, more obscure fare like the forgettable Flicka and Dead Silence, or even more obscure TV titles like Summerland, or Home and Away and Spellbinder: Land of the Dragon Lord in his native Australia. But again, most of us point to Mr. Stackhouse.
But Kwanten has also dabbled in the realms of indie films over the past couple of years, and his work there is not to be ignored. After seeing the 2010 western thriller, Red Hill, I was more than excited to take a peek at his other 2010 effort,...

It was inevitable that a movie studio would pick up the highly successful Broadway musical based on the highly successful compact disc put out by band Green Day. It’s fitting that it would be Universal to option American Idiot considering their growing interest in musical storytelling – or at least their proposed future in interest in telling stories like Les Miserable and Wicked. Deadline Neches is reporting that the studio has hired Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar) to write his first screenplay that doesn’t involve real-life political figures. His skill is unmistakable though, and his political experience will help color this story about three small-town guys despairing at their suburban existence through pop-punk. I, for one, welcome the adaptation because it’s high time a screen musical involved shooting up heroin. Universal has also signed Michael Mayer to direct the film, which is an interesting choice. His Tony-winning, Broadway...

With Breaking Bad and Mad Men already on its roster, and a somewhat successful (if gloriously messy) The Prisoner remake/reboot/reimagining completed last year, AMC has already carved out a pretty impressive reputation for quality drama. Its zombified project The Walking Dead comes this fall, but another long gestating project, Rubicon, finally got a promo trailer today. The network is also generously showing the full pilot episode after the Breaking Bad finale this Sunday 13th, before the show premieres for real later this summer. I, personally, can't wait to see more of James Badge Dale's crazy hair.

Production banner Framelight is ramping up. The company has optioned rights to the cult comic "Chi-Chian" and will develop it as a feature.
Framelight also has attached Mark Rosenthal to pen its family adventure "The Secret History of Tom Trueheart."
The fairy tale-tinged "Chi-Chian" is set in a dystopian New York -- the city has lost its independence and become a prefecture of Japan -- and centers on a seemingly ordinary young woman who has been tapped as a heroine and must fight samurais, robots and zombies to protect her loved ones.
The property, which began life as a six-part comic book from the Cuban-American musician Voltaire, spawned a set of digital episodes for Syfy and Syfy.com as well as a role-playing game.
Voltaire, whose full name is Aurelio Voltaire, is an artist and musician who has developed a following for avant-garde storytelling and artistry. Jeffrey Erb and Robert Robinson Jr.

Tim McGraw is one lucky man. He continually finds himself surrounded by beautiful women. He's married to Faith Hill, appeared with Reese Witherspoon in last year's movie Four Christmases and is now set to co-star with Sandra Bullock in a new film based on a true story.
The Blind Side is a movie about a wealthy couple, Sean and Leigh Anne Touhy, who take in a homeless African-American teenager and mentor him. The movie begins shooting in Atlanta later this month and is based on the best-selling book, The Blind Side: Evolution Of The Game, written by Michael Lewis and based on the real-life story of Michael Oher. Oher who inspired the book, is expected to be selected in the first round of this year's NFL draft.
While Tim is a country singer first, his film resume is growing. His films include The Kingdom, Black Cloud, Four Christmases, Friday Night Lights and Flicka.

Country singer Tim McGraw once again will test his acting skill in a feature film as he is tapped to star in "The Blind Side". The 41-year-old, who has shared screen with Reese Witherspoon in "Four Christmases", is set to star opposite Sandra Bullock, playing her on-screen husband by the name of Sean Touhy.
In addition to sharing scene with Bullock, the husband of country songstress Faith Hill will also be joined by Kathy Bates in the movie. He is expected to take part in the film's production when the principal photography begins later this month in Atlanta.

The poster for Sam Raimi's upcoming supernatural thriller Drag Me to Hell has been released and all I can is "Sweet"...though not in its traditional sense.
The film, starring Alison Lohman (Beowulf, Flicka) and Justin Long (He's Just Not That Into You) is about a loan officer who evicts an old lady from her home because She Doesn't Pay Her Mortgage. The old lady, as old ladies tend to do, casts an evil spell on the poor gal and she suddenly finds herself haunted by demons. The catch? They are trying to take her to hell.
C'mon demons, the girl was just doing her job.
Drag Me to Hell will be released on May 29th from Universal.

Not to be confused with Monty Python's Life of Brian, Yann Martel's novel "Life of Pi" is set to be adapted by Taiwanese director Ang Lee. The story follows an Indian boy named Piscine "Pi" Molitor Pate who is the lone survivor of a sunken freighter that winds up sharing a lifeboat with a hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan and a hungry Bengal tiger. So it's kind of like The Jungle Book and Noah's Ark combined, or at least that's my initial perception. The project is being developed at Fox 2000 and while there are older scripts around, including one by M. Night Shyamalan, Lee will find and hire a new writer to adapt. Fox producer Gil Netter, who has a very sketchy track record with films like Phone Booth, Flicka, Eragon, and Marley & Me to his name, is producing. Ang Lee is currently finishing his Taking Woodstock film,...

I didn't remember 2006's Flicka as being all that well-liked, or well-remembered, or even financially successful (it made $21 million worldwide). But apparently a girl and her horse can't be beat. Production Weekly is reporting that Flicka 2 will begin shooting in Vancouver in April. There's no indication of who will be in it, or whether the stars of the original-- Tim McGraw, Alison Lohman and Maria Bello-- will return. Michael Damian will be replacing Michael Mayer as director, so if I were to guess, I wouldn't count on the original cast returning. Are there any die-hard Flicka fans out there thrilled to see another? Or is this one of those sequels that, despite what anyone says, is just destined to go straight-to-dvd?...

"Send in the Gowns" was the title of 2004's photo shoot and they returned to the first year's game plan of glamour girls. The cover was more crowded though, bringing us an unlucky 13. But who was this cover unlucky for?
Maybe all of them, with the exception of Maggie Gyllenhaal (hurrah) and Hilary Swank (known affectionately around these parts as Beelzebub), who was just 11 months away from her second Oscar. Vanity Fair had gotten less daring in their cover...

Comedian Jay Baruchel will get his big break as the lead in Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Just in case you've never heard of this before, The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a live-action modern day adventure inspired by the classic Mickey Mouse story in Fantasia. Baruchel will star alongside of Nicolas Cage, who plays the sorcerer. Jon Turteltaub (of the National Treasure series) is directing and Jerry Bruckheimer (of usually anything awesome) is producing. Jay was last seen in Tropic Thunder and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, so you may know his name and his face, but he's never had a major leading role yet. The script for The Sorcerer's Apprentice was penned by writing duo Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal (Planet of the Apes, Mona Lisa Smile, Flicka) then rewritten by Matt Lopez (Bedtime Stories, Race to Witch Mountain). It tells the story of a wizard searching for an apprentice and...

Batman has got to be the most visible and most popular superhero right now. Spider-Man is certainly a close second and Iron Man has his new found fans, but The Dark Knight elevated Batman to a level I am sure Warner Bros. never anticipated and it looks like one Batman just isn't enough. E! Online has a scoop that Armie Hammer, an actor that has seen a little bit of TV work on shows such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Veronica Mars" as well as a role in Flicka as Male Prefect, is next in line to play the caped crusader in the continuing attempts to bring the Justice League to the big screen in George Miller's Justice League: Mortal currently rumored to be hitting theaters in 2011. Of course, this gives Christopher Nolan and company more than enough time to hammer out a third film in the Nolan Batman Trilogy,...

Christopher Nolan's The Prestige beat out Clint Eastwood's Flags of our Fathers this past weekend at the North American boxoffice. Buena Vista's tale of two dueling magicians conjured up the top spot, luring in $14.8 million. Flags, released by Paramount Pictures, raised $10.3 million, landing in third place among the weekend's rankings.
Still, the biggest winner of the frame was Warners itself, because the studio was involved in all three of the top pictures. The distributor co-produced Flags with DreamWorks, and it is handling overseas distribution for both Flags and Prestige. And it is also a producer and distributor of the second-ranked picture, The Departed, which held on strong its third weekend in release with a $13.5 million take and a mere 29% drop-off from the previous weekend. The gangster film's cumulative gross to date stands at a commanding $76.9 million.
The other two new releases, both targeting female moviegoers, found spots in the top 10 as well. 20th Century Fox unleashed the horse tale Flicka, which trotted to fifth place with a purse of $7.7 million. Sony secured the eighth spot with its moderately sized release of Marie Antoinette; opening in 859 theaters, the costume drama directed by Sofia Coppolla grossed $5.4 million in its maiden outing.
Prestige, the weekend leader, represented a solid win for Nolan, after the director's success in summer 2005 with Batman Begins. The movie stars two actors who've logged time in superhero mode -- Christian Bale of Batman and Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine in the X-Men series -- as the dueling magicians who fight for each others tricks and for the same girl. Rated PG-13, the period film earned a solid per-theater average of $6,489 in 2,281 theaters. Earning a B ranking by exit pollster CinemaScore, Prestige may have a tougher time holding on to its audience during its sophomore session. Drawing an audience that tilted in favor of males over-25, the film drew moviegoers primarily because of its subject matter, with the lead actors offering a secondary reason for audiences to sample the film.
The audience that showed up for Flags was even more heavily male (67%) and over 25 (85%), according to CinemaScore. It was drawn to the film both because of its subject matter and its director. And it rewarded the movie with an overall grade of A-. That could bode well for Flags' long-term playability, especially if the film figures in the upcoming awards season.
Given all the attention that Marie has earned in the fashion magazines in the walk-up to the film's opening, it's no surprise that the movie attracted many more females than males -- 69% vs. 31%. Its audience was also older as 70% were 25 and up. The film ended up with an overall grade of C, which could spell trouble for its expansion.
Meanwhile, though Buena Vista's rerelease of "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" didn't crack the top 10 -- it ranked 12th for the weekend -- the movie, sporting a new 3-D look, did turn-away business in the 168 theaters in which it played. Racking up a powerful per-screen average of $19,506, Christmas reopened to the tune of $3.3 million.
On an even more exclusive front, Sony Pictures introduced Running With Scissors, director Ryan Murphy's adaptation of the eccentric memoir by Augusten Burroughs, in eight theaters. The film, which stars an eclectic cast that includes Annette Bening, Brian Cox, Alec Baldwin and Gwyneth Paltrow, picked up $226,108, which amounts to an encouraging per-screen gross of $28,264.
Infamous, however, the second Truman Capote biopic in a year, didn't pick up any speed during its second weekend of release. The Warner Independent Pictures release, playing in 179 theaters, saw its take drop by 60% as it grossed an additional $179,960.

That old horse chestnut My Friend Flicka gets a generic makeover in the form of the singular Flicka, a thoroughly uninspiring drama that ultimately buckles under Michael Mayer's weighty direction.
Going back to the darker Mary O'Hara novel for inspiration, the updated flick boasts fine performances by Maria Bello, country singer Tim McGraw and young Alison Lohman, but it fails to convey the stirring spirit of the 1943 version.
Although it's squarely aimed at female tweens, with Roddy McDowall's original Ken McLaughlin character having been transformed to a Katy, that target demographic hasn't exactly been champing at the bit for their own movies, if the less than stellar results for such titles as "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and Aquamarine are of any indication.
While the Fox 2000 production will probably be a theatrical nonstarter, it still could kick up a bit of dust in the DVD corral.
Having returned to the McLaughlin family ranch in remote Wyoming (played extensively by Los Angeles) after being away in private school, Lohman's 16-year-old Katy discovers a wild mustang filly in the mountains whom she names Flicka, which she is told means "beautiful young girl" in Swedish.
Katy is desperate to keep the horse over the objections of her equally strong-willed dad, Rob McGraw, who made an impressive acting debut in 2004's Friday Night Lights), determined to prove that she can turn her into riding material.
For some reason, he just can't see that Katy and Flicka are kindred spirits, even though director Mayer (A Home at the End of the World) and screenwriters Mark Rosenthal & Lawrence Konner (responsible for the remakes of Mighty Joe Young, Planet of the Apes and Desperate Hours) keep hammering that point home relentlessly.
It turns out other things threaten to pull the McLaughlin family apart, including having to sell off the struggling ranch and Katy's brother Howard's (Ryan Kwanten) as-yet-unannounced plans to attend college in Boston rather than follow in his dad's footsteps.
That leaves mom Nell (the always reliable Bello) to try to keep it all together.
She certainly doesn't get much help from Mayer, whose buoyant stage work -- including the Broadway productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie and "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" -- is nowhere to be seen in this bland, overly purposeful production.
Although the performances are uniformly credible, the viewer is never given a real, unspoken sense of that unbridled bond between the girl and the mustang. There's little joy in this glum production, where storms keep gathering at the slightest hint of rain.
Production values are respectable, with cinematographer J. Michael Muro putting his considerable experience working in The Great Outdoors (Open Range, Crash), to good use here, though producer Aaron Zigman's score keeps getting interrupted by pesky songs about running with the wild horses and the weight of the world, just in case we somehow still didn't get the message.

A mustang horse broke its neck and died during filming of the 20th Century Fox movie Flicka, a remake of 1943 classic My Friend Flicka. The horse was killed Monday during filming at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center in the San Fernando Valley. According to the City of Los Angeles' Department of Animal Services, which conducted an investigation, the horse was running when it stepped on its own lead rope and broke its neck. Animal Services is ruling the death an accident. Animal Services spokeswoman Karen Knipscheer said that production was not shut down at the time of the accident, and filming resumed Tuesday. She said the production was informed that it could no longer use the horses involved in the incident, which were domestic rodeo horses. Knipscheer said their owner was shipping them home to Montana.
