A follow-up to Leigh Whannell’s excellent 2020 take on The Invisible Man is happening, and talk of a Dark Universe revival is also underway…
Back in 2020 – just before the world ground to a halt because of the global pandemic – Universal released The Invisible Man, a gripping psychological thriller featuring Elisabeth Moss and directed by Leigh Whannell.
The film was a critical and commercial success, earning over $150m from a reported budget of just $7m (a return that would have been much higher had cinemas not locked down at the time).
In the wake of the film’s positive reception, Whannell was given a crack at The Wolfman, another Universal monster. He then lost that gig to Derek Cianfrance when Ryan Gosling came on board, but when Gosling later departed the project, so too did Cianfrance.
That meant the job went back to Whannell and the film is question is now titled Wolf Man.

It’s been great to see the classic monsters returning in modern tales. From more Hollywood takes like Leigh Whannel’s The Invisible Man to the more indie darlings like The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster, the monsters have never been more relevant. And Larry Fessenden is no stranger to the world of monsters, having previously created his own iteration of Frankenstein’s Monster with Depraved as well as his own Wendigo film, aptly titled Wendigo. Now he’s taking on werewolf lore with his new film Blackout.
I was lucky enough to sit down with both Larry and the star of Blackout, Alex Hurt, to discuss the film. From the clear Lon Chaney influence to using alcoholism as a parallel for his transformation, this stands out from other modern werewolf tales. I was also fortunate enough to talk to Alex about the passing of his father, William, who...

Like most movies, The Invisible Man travelled a long and winding road to the silver screen, and perhaps longer and more winding than most. As biographer James Curtis put it in his book James Whale: A New World of Gods and Monsters, “The gestation of The Invisible Man was the lengthiest and most convoluted of all of James Whale’s films. It involved four directors, nine writers, six treatments, and ten separate screenplays—all for a film that emerged very much in harmony with the book on which it was based.” It was first suggested as a possible follow-up to Dracula (1931), perhaps as a vehicle for new star Bela Lugosi, but was dropped in favor of Frankenstein (1931) due to the complicated special effects it would require. After Frankenstein was an even bigger success, both director James Whale and star Boris Karloff were immediately attached to The Invisible Man and several...

As far as spooky time Los Angeles traditions go, there are few better than Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, which sees the iconic Universal Studios theme park taken over by all manner of ghouls, ghosts and goblins.
Part of the fun of the experience is being there so late; the park typically closes at 6:00pm in September but extends hours for Halloween Horror Nights (see the schedule here). And the other part that makes it so fun is seeing how they have been able to cram Halloween-y experiences into every nook and cranny of the park.
This year Halloween Horror Nights has houses devoted to “Stranger Things 4,” “The Last of Us” and “The Exorcist: Believer,” plus original haunted houses, a “Purge”-themed show in the “Waterworld” arena and a new Terror Tram experience. All of that, plus three “scare zones” and Death Eaters wandering around The Wizarding World of Harry Potter area.

Actress and singer Lea Michele has taken to Instagram to remember her Glee co-star Cory Monteith, who passed away, at age 31, on this day 10 years ago.
“Hey you. 10 years,” Michele started her note. “It feels like only yesterday that you were here and yet a million years ago all at the same time. I hold all of our memories in my heart where they will stay safe and never forgotten.”
Continued the performer, “We miss you every day and will never forget the light you to brought to us all. I miss you big guy. I hope you found Taylor up there and are playing the drums together.”
Michele in the latter line was referencing Taylor Hawkins, the famed drummer known for his work with the Grammy-winning rock band Foo Fighters, who died unexpectedly while on tour in Bogotá, Colombia on March 25, 2022. Hawkins was 50, and while no official cause of death has yet been disclosed,...

When we choose to spend days in our own room or in any posh Airbnb or 5-star hotel, our power of choice is at play. The freedom to choose to go outside whenever we want is what allows us to stay inside for as long as we want. When that power is snatched from us, it becomes a punishment. The reason we use the word “power” to address choice and not “characteristic” is because a choice can sometimes serve as the difference between sanity and insanity, between life and death. This is what happens in the new movie “Inside.”

Art thief Nemo makes his way inside an empty hi-tech posh penthouse in Times Square, New York, to steal some pieces of art, including a costly self-portrait. The owner and his daughter are away on a trip. Nemo is unable to find the...

What do we want out of a training montage?
I mean that question seriously. What, do movie viewers truly want out of a sequence where the main character improves, grows stronger, and collects a new set of skills in a matter of minutes as the magic of movie editing compresses hours (even days or weeks) of backbreaking, bone-crushing work into a few shots? If you were to quiz the pop culture zeitgeist at large, the answer would be clear: bombast. The big picture view of the training montage is one that is inherently silly, one that is easily parodied, one that suggests anyone can get better at anything as long as they have some great music and some rapid cuts of them leaping from one activity to another. Training montages are silly, pop culture tells us, and the zanier and wilder and bigger they are, the more we remember them.

Just over half a year since its launch, upstart European sales company Feel Content is heading to the Cannes Film Market with a slate of six Spanish-language features from Spain and Latin America.
Feel Content is the joint endeavor of Geraldine Gonard, director of Spain’s Conecta Fiction co-production forum, and Luis Collar, a partner and CEO at The Circular Group, a diversified film company. At last year’s Ventana Sur the company made its public bow with a slate of four productions: Matías Meyer’s “Modern Loves,” “Karakol” from Argentina’s Saula Benavente, Gracia Querejeta’s “The Invisible” and Toni Bestard’s “Pullman.”
“We think there’s a clear gap to fill in Spain for one more international sales agency, given there aren’t many in the country. Those that are here can’t represent all the films coming onto the market,” Collar told Variety ahead of the Argentine market.

March brings breezes loud and shrill/stirs the dancing daffodil. Bit of poetry for you there. What Sara Coleridge fails to mention is that March also brings season seven of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Netflix UK, more weekly episodes of Riverdale season five, a brand new sci-fi series from the creators of Misfits, a new film directed by Amy Poehler and a host of cool animated series.
The One (pictured above) is an eight-part British series created by Howard Overman about a near-future world in which a DNA test can track down your perfect partner. It’s adapted from John Marrs’ novel of the same name, and yes, has a strikingly similar premise to US anthology sci-fi Soulmates. Finally released outside Japan for the very first time, these unique riffs on H.G. Wells’ classic character (though undoubtedly also indebted to Universal’s iconic film series) are two of the earliest examples of tokusatsu (special effects) cinema from the legendary Daiei Studios.
In The Invisible Man Appears, written and directed by Nobuo Adachi in 1949, a scientist successfully creates an invisibility serum, only to be kidnapped by a gang of thugs who wish to use the formula to rob a priceless jewel. In addition to being the earliest surviving Japanese science fiction film ever made, the film’s entertaining special effects were an early credit for the legendary Eiji Tsuburaya, five years before he first brought Godzilla to life.
Eight years later, Mitsuo Murayama’s exciting The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly tells the story of a series of mysterious murders where the only clue is strange buzzing...

The Online Film Critics Society (Ofcs) has revealed its annual Top Ten List as well as winners of its film awards which was topped by Nomadland. In addition, The Chloé Zhao American wanderlust drama was named Best Picture. Also on the list is Pixar’s Soul which was also named Best Animated Feature.
“This list of nominations showcases the diversity and broad expressiveness of the film community,” said Wesley Lovell, a member of the Governing Committee of Ofcs, and founder of CinemaSight.com. “In a year where nothing was as we expected, and those expectations had to shift, cinema not only maintained its creativity and expansive canvas, but it managed to give new voices a chance to speak louder than they might have in any other year.”
He added, “In our directing category alone, we have four women, each at varying points in their careers, alongside one of the major voices of his generation.

An employed silence. A scratchy phonograph playing a theme inspired by Yiddish music. An exercise in minimalism. Those are some of the components in scores belonging to films flying under the radar as awards season begins — but might not be when all is said and done.
Variety looks at some of those works and the composers behind them.
The Invisible Man
In this classic-movie update, Elisabeth Moss plays the abused, on-the-run wife of a brilliant scientist. Composer Benjamin Wallfisch (“It”) took his initial inspiration from Bernard Herrmann’s famous “Psycho” score, writing solely for string orchestra (including a cello theme for Moss’ character), then added angry, aggressive electronics to depict the husband with the invisibility suit. Yet he also strategically employed silence. “We made bold musical gestures, so that the absence of music is something you feel,” Wallfisch says. “We used unusual mixing techniques, sometimes surrounding the audience with a wall of sound,...

Appropriately blessed by sunshine in Spain, though the whole event went online, the Malaga Film Festival’s Spanish Screenings wrapped Friday, though films will continue to screen another week given the demand for screenings. The equivalent of France’s UniFrance Rendez-vous with French cinema in Paris, the Screenings proved a bellwether for far larger trends coursing the American Film Market and the international market at large. Following, five takeaways:
The French Connection
The Malaga Spanish Screenings rounded their final bend on Friday with news that France’s Playtime Group, one of Europe’s premier film sales-production groups with companies across Europe, has boarded Vaca Films’ “Project Emperor.” The Playtime-Vaca relation stretches back a decade to one of Spain’s biggest modern break-outs, “Cell 211.” It now forms part of a fast multiplying web of Gallic connections with Spain, as French companies buy into the global reach of Spanish-language fiction.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein may be a public domain story, but the vast majority of the iconic monster’s most recent live-action appearances have attempted to reinvent the character with wildly inconsistent results. Aaron Eckhart took top billing in the awful box office bomb I, Frankenstein, while James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe lent their talents to revisionist fantasy Victor Frankenstein, which also tanked.
The Dark Universe’s Bride of Frankenstein with Angelina Jolie and Javier Bardem dissipated when the would-be franchise imploded, but thankfully, the monster and his creator were admittedly handled much better in Showtime’s cult favorite series Penny Dreadful. As one of the most iconic figures in literature, a new take on Frankenstein tends to arrive every few years or so, and Universal are already developing a fresh spin on the story as they look to reinvent their stable of classic monsters once more following the success of The Invisible Man.

The film follows a woman named Cecilia Kass (played by Elisabeth Moss), who has escaped the clutches of her abusive boyfriend, Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), only to learn a short time later that he’s committed suicide and left her a great deal of money. But as Cecilia begins to try and settle into her new life, one where she doesn’t have to live in constant fear of Adrian, she begins to suspect her ex isn’t actually dead at all, and has somehow found a way to make himself invisible, allowing him to continue to harass and torment her, leaving Cecilia shaken and questioning her own sanity.
