BBC Four Drama bows out with a moving story of addiction, heartache, and love, starring Dominic West and Helena Bonham Carter...
BBC Four has had to pull out from making original dramatic productions, but, as Drama Commissioning Controller Ben Stephenson puts it, they want to "go out with a bang." The channel has produced several biopics focusing on well-known British celebrities over the past few years, some, like Kenneth Williams: Fantabulosa! following a fairly standard life story from youth to death, others, like Hattie, focusing on a particular moment in its subject’s life (in that case, Hattie Jacques’ affair with a young driver, John Schofield) which is used as illustrative of their character and life story as a whole. Burton and Taylor, which tells the story of the last time Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton worked together, falls into the second category,...

Baz Luhrmann has spoken about the second soundtrack to his latest movie The Great Gatsby.
Yellow Cocktail Music: The Great Gatsby Jazz Recordings is to be released on CD and vinyl next month, while it is already available on iTunes.
Bryan Ferry's orchestra group have recorded jazz versions of tracks from the original release, alongside classics by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Irving Aaronson.
"I know my traditional jazz, because I grew up around a stepfather who had 14,000 jazz 78s," Lurhmann told The Hollywood Reporter.
The new collection includes Ferry recording jazz versions of his band Roxy Music's 'Love Is The Drug' and Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black', which was covered by Beyoncé and Andre 3000 on the first LP.

All the Cannes gossip, including news of Michael Fassbender's fake head and Naomie Harris's long walk to stardom
M vs Moneypenny
Next year's race for the actress Oscars is already taking tasty shape after Cannes. It should be a battle of the Princesses as we see Cannes juror Nicole Kidman in Grace of Monaco go toe-to-toe with Naomi Watts in a film now, finally and officially, named Diana. But there could be another twist as two Bond girls enter the fray. Dame Judi Dench, who was M in the Bond movies, must be a cert for Philomena, the British road movie written by and co-starring Steve Coogan, for which Harvey Weinstein parted with $6m after seeing just a seven-minute showreel at Cannes, clearly scenting a movie that will swell his Oscar cabinet. But Weinstein has also swooped on Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and is, I hear, preparing...

The Black Eyed Peas singer teamed up with Q-Tip and GoonRock for the upbeat dance number 'A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)', which includes elements of 1920s saxophone riffs.

Lana Del Rey has said that Baz Luhrmann's upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby is "glamorous and exciting".
The singer-songwriter appears on the Jay-z-curated soundtrack for the film, contributing the new song 'Young And Beautiful'.
Del Rey said: "It was an honour to work with Baz Luhrmann on his amazing adaptation of one of the most extraordinary books ever written.
"The movie is highly glamorous and exciting; Rick Nowels and I were thrilled to write the song for the film."
Jay-z previously said: "The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one's introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion.
"It's ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist. The imagination Baz brought to Moulin Rouge! made it a masterpiece, and Romeo + Juliet's score wasn't just in the background; the music became a character.
"This film's vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience.

If there's anybody in the world who understands the need to be big pimpin' and spendin' cheese, it's Jay-z, and it sounds like all that baller status empathy is coming to good, good use for director Baz Luhrmann and his upcoming adaptation of "The Great Gatsby."
In this latest (final?) trailer for the lavish picture, the group offers up a delicious little sampling of the smörgåsbord of talent Jay's got on deck for "Gatsby" - leading off, of course, with his one and only Daisy Beyonce and her co-cover of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" with Andre 3000. Listen closely and you'll also hear a little Jack White, Lana Del Rey and the incomparable Florence + the Machine seamlessly dropping in here and there. Gorgeous.
The full "Gatsby" track list was revealed by EW yesterday to put down the long-lived suspicions of involvement by Prince and Lady Gaga with the album.

So, now you've seen the razzle dazzle new trailer for "The Great Gatsby," and your ears may have noticed a smattering of music from Beyonce, Andre 3000, Lana Del Rey and Florence And The Machine. And from there things get...interesting. Yep, the previously reported cover by Beyonce and Andre 3000 of Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black" is on the list, but for some reason we will also have to endure "music" by will.i.am and Fergie (who somehow roped Q-Tip into joining her). One of the great mysteries of Baz Luhrmann's take on The Great Gatsby has been the choice of musical cues. Would he follow Jack Clayton in using 1920s music, Charleston, Lindy Hop and all, or... who are we kidding? He was never doing that. Instead, he recruited Jay-z to supervise a soundtrack that, unsurprisingly, has a heavy R 'n' B and hip-hop flavour.Pitchfork, who broke the playlist in full, reveal that the soundtrack will be available digitally from May 7 in America and a day earlier everywhere else. As news of a new movie hits, we look at the remarkable things to spot in the infamous Super Mario Bros movie...
Adapting any art form into a movie presents a tricky proposition. It is, after all, easy to fall into the trap of being too reverential to the source material - whether it happens to be a play, novel or old television show you're making into a feature film, there has to be an element of invention, of reworking the source material into something that stands on its own as a piece of entertainment and - dare we say it - art.
This would go some way to explaining why Super Mario Bros., the 1993 feature-length adaptation of Nintendo's hit videogame series, only vaguely resembles the property on which it was meant to be based. Released in a busy summer season - one dominated by another flick with dinosaurs in it,...

"Love Is the Drug" isn't just a Roxy Music hit. It also just might be Bryan Ferry's wedding song. The British art rock band's suave frontman tied the knot with girlfriend Amanda Sheppard on Jan. 4 in the Turks and Caicos. So just how did these two lovebirds meet? Let's just say Ferry didn't have to stray too far from home. Per the U.K. Telegraph, the 66-year-old singer met the 29-year-old Sheppard in 2009 after she dated one of his sons—and despite the big age difference, the two hit it off. A spokesman for Ferry said the nuptials took place at the Caribbean islands' posh Amanyara resort and the twosome exchanged vows in a "simple private ceremony." The...

Out now, the Blu-ray of Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch contains an extended version that replaces 17 minutes of cut footage. Here, Ryan compares the two versions...
When Sucker Punch arrived in cinemas earlier this year, it’s fair to say that its reception wasn’t particularly warm. While the film had its defenders, the overall consensus was that Zack Snyder’s dark action movie was best avoided.
My initial response to Sucker Punch was less than positive, but I was still intrigued to learn that the film had been heavily edited for its theatrical release. Warner, anxious to make Sucker Punch as audience-friendly as possible to ensure a potentially lucrative 12A certificate, had the film trimmed by almost seventeen minutes. Could it be, I wondered, that Snyder - a normally decent director, whose Dawn Of The Dead remake I greatly enjoyed - was forced to compromise his vision for the mighty dollar?...

Early works such as Totally F***ed Up, Nowhere and The Doom Generation veered wildly between anarchic invention and irritatingly self-conscious craziness, courting controversy for controversy's sake. Things settled down somewhat with 2004's Mysterious Skin, which suggested to many that Araki had finally grown up and reined in his indulgent excesses. Strange then that, months after turning 50, Araki chose to return to his arrested adolescence with a film that turns everything up to 11. Stranger still that Kaboom (2010, Artificial Eye, 15) is so much fun; a surprisingly upbeat and jolly tale of apocalyptic polymorphous perversity which was one of the unexpected treats of last year's Cannes festival.
Filmed in hallucinatory hues, the narrative centres nominally on tousle-haired student Smith (Thomas Dekker), whose sexuality...

An action kung fu sci-fi thriller musical? Zack Snyder's latest film, "Sucker Punch," certainly sounded like an interesting stew of influences and interests. You don't see too many movies with both samurai robots and show-stopping dance routines. It's a unique combination.
But when "Sucker Punch" finally made it to theaters, the musical sequences were almost totally gone, removed as part of eighteen minutes of footage cut to bring the film down to the PG-13 rating demanded by the studio. But tomorrow, the Extended Cut of "Sucker Punch" comes out on Blu-ray, with all the excised footage back in place. And speaking of the excised footage, here is a look at an aforementioned musical number, back from the dead:
Here's how the film's producer Deborah Snyder described the scene to The Playlist back in March:

Zack Snyder, as the filmmaker tends to do, has split the Owf audience (and indeed our own writers) firmly down the middle over his latest movie Sucker Punch but one thing that we can all agree on is that it has a kick-ass soundtrack.
We previewed it some weeks back and now I am delighted to say we have three copies of “Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” that’s out now, to give away to our lucky readers, courtesy of Sony Music.
The audio companion to the film director Zack Snyder describes as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns” has taken over two years to create, and will delight filmgoers and music fans of all generations.
Fascinatingly reworked versions of classic songs illuminate the soundtrack, with the film’s star Emily Browning covering “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” (Eurythmics), “Where Is My Mind?” (The Pixies), and...

Go and see Sucker Punch this weekend and you’ll notice that the end credits are accompanied by a cover version of Love is the Drug and some footage of a big song and dance number. We’ve heard that this is from a scene sadly deleted from the theatrical cut, but expected to appear intact on the eventual DVD and Blu-ray release.
Indeed, a whole series of musical numbers were cut from the film, and some of them were quite surprising – none more so than an inspired black-metal cover of Rebecca Black’s Friday.
Yep. Before it was the viral smash it is today, this year’s most played song was turned on its head, twisted inside out and smashed bloody in a cover version by Sucker Punch‘s Emily Browning and Guns and Roses guitarist Slash. Those who have heard it have described it as “literally unbelievable”.

The Sucker Punch soundtrack. Describing his new project Sucker Punch as Alice In Wonderland with Machine Guns might have been a good way of securing funding, and might attract chuckling late-teen boys to the theatres, but graphic-fancying CGI automaton Zack Snyder might just as equally have suggested Terminator 2 with cartoon owls, or Citizen Kane with the Ed 209, such is the wisdom of melding a beautifully functioning classic with a completely incongruous element. If only he’d come up with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, then at least he’d have a best-selling book on his hands. Just as well that Snyder’s snappy-cum-brainless one-liner stands empirically for nothing, the similarities of Sucker Punch with Lewis Carroll’s classic limited to a female protagonist entering a sort of fantasy world, and the dissimilarities being giant robots, CGI everything, massive explosions, every female character looking like an auditioning Playboy bunny, and everything...

Sucker Punch
Directed by: Zack Snyder
Cast: Emily Browning, Oscar Isaac, Carla Gugino, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Scott Glenn
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: March 25, 2011
Plot: A young woman (Browning) seeks to escape the insane asylum she’s locked up in by exploring violent fantasies, featuring her friends (Hudgens, Chung, Cornish, Malone).
Who’S It For?: While ladies are indeed kicking butt, the empowerment of Sucker Punch is reserved for the fanboys, who get to watch Snyder toy with more action figures (or in this case, scantily clad dolls). The same crowd that ate up the silly 300 will enjoy this very much, whether they’re aware or not of Snyder working overtime to reverse that movie’s homoeroticism.
Expectations: “Slow-mo” Snyder has gotten fairly predictable with his style, which is at least unmatched as of now (no one loves slow motion as...

If you're a fan of director Zack Snyder ("Watchmen," "300"), you know that subtlety isn't exactly his strong suit. Going by the soundtrack to his new action/fantasy/teenage boy fantasy "Sucker Punch," this extends to every aspect of the process.
The film's soundtrack is comprised exclusively of covers of classic songs, including Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," The Smiths'' "Where Is My Mind" and The Stooges' "Search and Destroy." While no song matches the intensity of the original, Snyder reworked many of the selections to avoid the original sin of copying the source material wholesale.
So we get Eurhythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" turned into a jazzy noir number sung by "Sucker Punch" star herself Emily Browning. The cold, detached singing of Annie Lennox have transformed into the chanteuse vocals favored by singers like Julee Cruise in all those David Lynch films. Browning also appears on a cover...

Here is the red band trailer for Blitz, directed by Elliot Lester (Love Is The Drug) starring Jason Statham. As usual, he kicks ass as a tough cop who sets out “on a journey to take down a serial killer whose targeting police officers.” The film was written by Nathan Parker (Moon) and co-stars Paddy Considine and Aidan Gillen.

The audio companion to the film director Zack Snyder describes as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns” has taken over two years to create, and saw Snyder (Watchmen, 300), collaborate with Grammy-nominated composer and music director Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge!) and composer Tyler Bates (Watchmen, 300, Californication) to select the collection of songs featured on the soundtrack, which play an integral role in the film.
Reworked versions of classic songs illuminate the soundtrack, with the film’s star Emily Browning covering “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” (Eurythmics), “Where Is My Mind?” (The Pixies), and “Asleep” (The Smiths), and stars Carla Gugino (Watchmen) and Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood) performing a sultry, musical theatre-inspired version of “Love Is The Drug” (Roxy Music). Zack Snyder has gained a reputation for striking and stylish visuals in films such as 300, Watchmen and Legend of the Guardians - and now he's also hoping to stimulate us on an auditory level.
A host of classic songs have been "wildly reimagined" for the soundtrack album for Snyder's fantasy adventure Sucker Punch, some of them performed by the film's stars.
Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will hit stores on March 28, 2011.
Sony Music's audio companion to the movie Snyder describes as "Alice In Wonderland with machine guns" has taken over two years to create. It includes songs by Eurythmics, The Smiths, Roxy Music and The Beatles; a full track listing is included below.

We told ya'll about one of Syfy's upcoming films The Other Side way back and today, thanks to Dread Central we have a name change and air date for you. The new name is now Ferocious Planet and the movie will take the April 9th Saturday night spot. Ferocious Planet was written by Douglas G. Davis (Carny) and stars John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings), Joe Flanigan ("Stargate: Atlantis"), and Chris Newman ("Love Is the Drug"). Plot: It was a groundbreaking device designed to glimpse alternate universes and government commissioned by a brilliant physicist. But the machine malfunctioned on its first presentation, transporting a group of observers into a nightmarish new dimension. The team quickly must use ingenuity and courage to outwit, outplay and outlast the native man-eating creatures of this bizarre new world while doing their best to repair the damaged machine. Even if they stay alive, without a working transport,...

I'm probably encroaching on Foy territory with this story, but after all his live tweeting last night during the Oscars, I figured he could use a break. Syfy's The Other Side, which we first told you about several months ago, has been given a new name - Ferocious Planet - and a release date of April 9th.
Ferocious Planet was written by Douglas G. Davis (Carny) and stars John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Joe Flanigan ("Stargate: Atlantis"), and Chris Newman ("Love Is the Drug"). Interestingly enough, there's no info on the director ... not exactly what you'd call a good sign. In any event, check out the synopsis and trailer below, and look for more soon.

Classic rock tunes such as Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, the Pixies’ “Where is my Mind” and Roxy Music’s “Love is the Drug” get turned on their ear on the soundtrack for “Sucker Punch.” The Zack Snyder-directed film is about a young girl, Baby Doll, played by Emily Browning, who is thrown into a mental asylum by her evil stepmother. Her fellow inmates, played by Abbie Cornish, Jenna Malone and Vanessa Hudgens, take on enemies, real and imagined, in an effort to break free. [More after the jump...] Browning performs re-imagined versions of a number of tunes, as do...

Releasing March 22nd, a few days before the film is released, the Sucker Punch soundtrack features some interesting songs and covers. I think the press release says it all, actually:

“Working with Marius and re-teaming with Tyler on Sucker Punch’s soundtrack was an extraordinary experience,” said Snyder. “Sucker Punch is a film created with multiple levels of reality, so this same layered construct had to be considered and applied when approaching the music. The selection of songs we chose and the various ways in which they were each re-envisioned had to add depth, dimension and meaning to the sequences they exist within. Whether or not Sucker Punch turns out to be a watchable movie – and certainly myself and Simon have expressed & debated our doubts about that issue to some length this week – there’s a good chance it will at least have a pleasurable soundtrack.
Just like Zack Snyder’s meticulously hand-chosen track list for Watchmen included an eclectic taste of iconic tracks from all kind of music era’s and genres, Snyder has once again choose a wide selection of recognisable tunes for his latest action fantasy, many of which are covers sung by the cast themselves.
Lead Emily Browning seems to be the busiest as she has renditions of The Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’, The Smiths’ ‘Asleep’ and ‘Where Is My Mind?’ by the Pixies, though cast members Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac also cover Roxy Music’s ‘Love is the Drug’.

Here are some details on the soundtrack for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch. I am super excited to see this when it arrives in theaters on March 25! Not only does the movie look amazing it is going to sound amazing as well (both sound fx wise and musically).

The actress lends her voice to a trio of tracks taking on the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), The Smiths’ “Asleep” and The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” (with Yoav). Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac also sing Roxy Music‘s “Love Is the Drug.”

The right music can make a trailer as much as it can break it. Recently, the choral cover of Radiohead's "Creep," in the trailer for "The Social Network" sold me on the film. Up until then I'd not taken it seriously. I'm not too fired up about director Edward Zwick's ("Defiance") romcom about a Viagra salesmen titled "Love and Other Drugs," nor am I wooed too much by the trailer.
However, dropping Roxy Music's 'Love is the Drug" at the right moment does class this act up a notch. Good move, if a bit obvious. Not as awed by the Inxs weepie "Beautiful Girl" or anything that comes after. The cram as much music as possible mentality continues to plague mainstream trailers. They should have quit while they were ahead.

Pregnant singer Alicia Keys celebrated her baby news by performing with British rockers Kasabian and crooner Bryan Ferry at a benefit gig in London on Thursday night, May 27, which raised thousands of dollars for her children's charity. The "Fallin' " hitmaker, who has confirmed she's expecting a baby with her producer fiance Swizz Beatz, hosted the Black Ball in the British capital in aid of her Keep A Child Alive foundation.
Keys played an intimate set at the gig, opening with her hit "No One" before welcoming Kasabian stars Tom Meighan and Serge Pizzorno on stage to play the band's song "Underdog", before launching into a rendition of "Where Did All The Love Go?" The Grammy-winner was later joined by Ferry for performances of Roxy Music's "Love Is the Drug" and the veteran singer's "Slave to Love".
