The star, along with Tracee Ellis Ross playing his wife, does his best but Amazon’s increasingly convoluted family film wears thin
We’re in the process of getting snowed in by flimsy festive fodder, most of which is indistinguishable – cheaply made, poorly written, floating on the assumed Christmas spirit of those watching – but there are moments when it’s easy to get naively hopeful. Seeing the involvement of Eddie Murphy in Amazon’s Candy Cane Lane is one such moment, the actor not only a key reason why Trading Places remains a December staple but a star who brightens whatever film he’s in, regardless of the season. It might have been a while since he’s been at his shiniest (2019’s Dolemite Is My Name being a fine example of what he can and will do) but at a time when star power as a whole is depressingly diminished,...

There have been some awesome Cosplays this year, and one of the most utilised for expos has been Persona 5. There was even a group of cosplayers that rocked up at the annual Anime Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Centre dressed as Persona 5 button configurations!
Always on the lookout for the most trending cosplays, I discovered this Persona 5 cosplay where Ann Takamaki is being portrayed by Shirogane-sama on Facebook, and she is absolutely stunning. That costume looks incredibly authentic and makes me wonder where she had it made. The fantastic photography was done by pollypwnz, and here are some more images for you to drool over.
Meeeow! I love how people really go to such lengths to dress up as their favourite characters. I'm going to be spending a lot more time in Reddit and Facebook cosplay communities this month to see if any cosplayers dress up as game characters in Christmas themes.

For nearly two decades, the Halliwell family has have transformed their Connecticut home into a Christmas wonderland — much to the dismay of their neighbors.
This year, the Halliwells used 350,000 Christmas lights to create the annual “Wonderland at Roseville” display that attracts hundreds — and sometimes thousands — of visitors. Now, neighbors fed up with the event started a petition, police tell People.

America, as we know, is a rabidly divided nation. But when it comes to dramatising the cultural/ideological chasm, the blockbuster era of Hollywood comedy was way ahead of the curve. Town versus gown. The slobs versus the squares. The by-the-book straight-arrow cop versus his reckless, crazy-ass, trash-the-rules partner. Or, just two years ago in Daddy’s Home, Will Ferrell as the agonisingly polite and “evolved” milquetoast stepfather Brad Whitaker versus Mark Wahlberg as the proudly macho and non-coddling divorced delinquent Dusty Mayron, who set out to prove to Brad that “real” dads don’t cry.
The battle played out in predictably pat, occasionally funny ways. And though that should mean, in theory, that there isn’t much ground left for the sequel to cover, Daddy’s Home 2, a boisterously formulaic and designed-by-committee holiday comedy, enjoys a certain leg up in timing. It arrives at a moment when the crackling...

Only Et sat down with all six members of Justice League -- Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Ray Fisher, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa -- and when you get a bunch of superheroes together in the same room, there is nothing they love more than debating over whose costume is the least comfortable. Considering all of the spandex and swords and capes and CGI in this movie, there was plenty of commiserating to go around:
Batman (Ben Affleck) Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures
"I would cool it down a little bit. Gets a little toasty in there," Affleck revealed of the beefed-up batsuit he wears as Bruce Wayne's alter ego. Miller chimed in in agreement, "Ben wears a solid piece of rubber!"

“Daddy’s Home 2” isn’t sorry. It doesn’t care about your stupid feelings. Don’t remember what happened at the end of the last movie, or which home belongs to which daddy? Too bad. Don’t want your festive family comedies to star Mel Gibson as a serial womanizer with a flair for violence? Well, “The Man Who Invented Christmas” isn’t out until next week, so you’re shit out of luck. Don’t understand how Will Ferrell could re-team with Mark Wahlberg when a sequel to “Step Brothers” is possibly the only thing that could pull civilization back from the brink? Get in line.

You know you’re in trouble when the matriarch of a horror movie is determined to make this “the best Christmas ever.” Australia’s latest genre export is in keeping with the country’s cinematic tradition of brutality, if not necessarily the quality— Craig Anderson’s “Red Christmas” isn’t exactly a lump of coal in your stocking, but neither is it worth waking up early for on the big day.

This year’s one-hour series Emmy contenders for cinematography are marked by some bold sci-fi and dystopian disruptors: “Westworld,” “Stranger Things,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Man in the High Castle” (last year’s winner), “Mr. Robot, and Sense8.” With dazzling visuals, they explored the impact of tyranny and hate, of societies turned upside down, struggling for a greater humanity.
That leaves “The Crown” as the lone historical drama. But it too was a disruptor of sorts in the way that it showcased the symbiotic relationship between the monarchy and Parliament in post-war Great Britain, steered by the young Queen Elizabeth (nominated Claire Foy) and the old warhorse, Winston Churchill (nominated John Lithgow).
But don’t be surprised if it comes down to a race between the dueling dystopias: “Westworld” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Twin Peaks picks up steam and cues the music in its latest season 3 episode, What Story is That, Charlie?
This review contains spoilers.
See related Gotham season 3 episodes 21 & 22 review: Destiny Calling & Heavydirtysoul
3.13 What Story Is That, Charlie?
We continue right where we left off, for better and for worse.
For a while there, every episode of Twin Peaks: The Return almost felt like a non-sequitur to the one preceding it. But Part 13 picks up directly after Part 12, even—and it’s funny to say it, but this feels like a rarity—checking back in with characters who are right where we left them one episode ago.
Thankfully, it’s faster moving than that last episode, which felt mostly like a series of long conversations in rooms and featured the reintroduction of Audrey Horne by way of an over ten-minutes scene (!!!) of her arguing with her diminutive...

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” from the Duffer Brothers unmasks the dark side of the ’80s, and its nightmarish Upside Down also represents the perfect allegory for Trump’s America, too. Everything gets unhinged when a monster invades from another dimension and kidnaps youngsters. It’s Spielberg meets King meets Kubrick.
Creating the Town of Hawkins
For the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the Duffers shot in Atlanta, which still retains its mid-20th century sense of suburbia. “We weren’t making a slick, glossy version of the ’80s, but, rather, a gritty, textural feeling that is lost in high-definition movie-making these days,” said production designer Chris Trujillo.
For the central Byers house, the art department built a set with the right “lived in” look. It contained strategically interconnecting rooms, and set dressing from estate sale pillaging.
Cinematographer Tim Ives, meanwhile, took his cues from “E.T.,” using the Red Dragon and...

Sci-Fi and Comic Book Shows Are Getting Serious Awards Attention: How Bold DPs are Changing the Race
Call them the Dp disruptors: “Legion,” “Stranger Things,” “Westworld,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “Taboo.” It’s one thing to be for cinematography to be cinematic, but quite another to provoke. Here’s a look at the cinematography that was used to explore the impacts of tyranny and hate, of societies turned upside down and against humanity.
“Legion”
After re-imagining “Fargo” as a nightmarish crime anthology, Noah Hawley stripped the superhero iconography out of Marvel’s “Legion” by concentrating on schizophrenia and paranoia. Dan Stevens’ troubled mutant, David Haller, proves to be an unreliable narrator, unable to grasp the difference between reality and imagination, who meets the girl of his dreams (Rachel Keller) in a mental hospital and discovers that his psychological instability is a result of special telepathic power.
Cinematographer Dana Gonzales (“Fargo”) liked a story that demanded a shift from naturalistic to heightened. “And there’s a love...

If you've fallen a little out of love with Lip Sync Battle lately, you're definitely going to want to tune in on Thursday. The adorable kids of Stranger Things are going head to head, and it already looks amazing. Not only does Finn Wolfhard go retro (complete with Stranger Things-inspired Christmas lights and alphabet wallpaper) for Weezer's "Buddy Holly," but Caleb McLaughlin even channels host LL Cool J as he busts the rhymes to "I'm Bad" on stage. These kids are just too cool for their own good. ...

When Netflix has a resident rock star scientist like Bill Nye on the payroll, you can bet the streaming service will put him to good use beyond just hosting his show, “Bill Nye Saves the World.”
In the video below, Nye takes on one of the scientific theories seen in Netflix’s breakout hit “Stranger Things.” On the show itself, teacher Mr. Clarke (Randall P. Havens) took a stab at explaining how to travel to an alternate dimension. His interpretation involved drawing on a paper plate and an elaborate metaphor involving an acrobat, a flea and a rope (no, they didn’t walk into a bar). The rather simplistic explanation, however, didn’t really say how said alternate dimension could exist, which is understandable. There’s no way that Mr. Clarke knew that the boys were dealing with the Upside Down.

Not one, not two, but Three huge plot twists this week! Let's get to it.
On Into the Badlands Season 2 Episode 6, the trifecta of awesomeness included a tragic death, a secret revealed, and a massive betrayal.
For me, the reveal of Bajie as a former Abbot was mind blowing.
True, there were clues sprinkled in throughout the season: he is a kick ass fighter, and clearly has a strong moral code deep down, but I Never in a million years thought he was Abbot material.
I strongly suspected something was up when the Abbots searched the opium den on the evidence of their "gift" detection thingy. M.K. was nowhere to be found, and yet the device pinged, showing someone with "the gift" was there.
Bajie hid under the water and, viola, the reading vanished.
His refusal to help Sunny find the Abbots also made my Spidey sense tingle, but...

It would be reductive and unfair to say that Michal Marczak’s “All These Sleepless Nights” is the film that Terrence Malick has been trying to make for the last 10 years, but it certainly feels that way while you’re watching it. A mesmeric, free-floating odyssey that wends its way through a hazy year in the molten lives of two Polish twentysomethings, this unclassifiable wonder obscures the divide between fiction and documentary until the distinction is ultimately irrelevant, using the raw material of real life to create a richer story of drift and becoming than “Song to Song” could ever manufacture from oblivious celebrities trying to find their characters between the notes.
Unfolding like a plotless reality show that was shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, this lucid dream of a movie paints an unmoored portrait of a city in the throes of an orgastic reawakening. From the opening images of fireworks exploding over downtown Warsaw,...

Rock Dog is not one of those crossover hits that parents can enjoy just as much as their kids. Far from it. Uninvolving, unfunny and visually inferior to its peers, Rock Dog is a straight-to-dvd production at best. How it managed to sneak its way onto the big-screen, we may never know. Luke Wilson provides the voice of Bodi, a Mastiff introduced on Snow Mountain in Tibet. His job is guarding the wool-spinning sheep there from a nasty pack of wolves led by Linnux (Lewis Black). To avoid distractions, Mastiff leader (and Bodi’s dad) Khampa (J.K. Simmons) forbids all music from the mountain. But when a radio is dropped by a passing airplane, Bodi decides he wants to be a rock ‘n’ roll star. Defying his father’s wishes, he heads to the Zootopia-like big city, and finds the reclusive cat rock legend Angus Scattergood (Eddie Izzard), who needs a new song fast.

In my last column I talked about my expectations for the Fan2Sea comic-con cruise, how it fulfilled them, and some of the things I generally loved about being at a con on a cruise ship and about the way in which Fan2Sea pulled off its maiden voyage (haha!).
Today, it’s all about the details. Want to know what your daily experience will be like if (when! I hope!) Fan2Sea happens again and you decide to go? Well, I can’t say, but I can tell you what mine was like! So here goes:
Day 1
Day 1 was pleasantly low-key from the start. Because luggage was still being delivered to staterooms, I spent the first bit of ship time chilling in one of the main areas overlooking the bar, with my lovely roommate, ComicMix assistant editor Adriane Nash, and with PR guru (and former Comic Book Resources writer/editor) Steve Sunu.
