10. The Cat's Meow (2001)
It’s 1924, and Charlie Chapman is the biggest movie star in history. When a famous producer is murdered on a powerful media magnate’s yacht, there is no media coverage or investigation.
No one knows what truly happened, but the bizarre rumors about Chaplin and his close circle’s involvement in that crime are in the air.
You can watch The Cat's Meow on Prime Video.
9. The Bank Job (2008)
A foolproof bank robbery sounds like any criminal team’s dream, right? There’s only one extra step they must do to satisfy their mastermind, an MI5 agent who orchestrates the robbery: apart from money, they need to steal dirt on a member of the royal family stored in the same bank. Sounds easy, but things go horribly wrong.
You can watch The Bank Job on Netflix and Prime Video.

Eric Bana stars as the eponymous Chopper, Australia’s most notorious and celebrated criminal figure, in what’s been lauded as the “performance of a lifetime”. This brutally gripping true-crime feature received critical acclaim on its original release in 2000, and now Andrew Dominik’s directorial debut is available as a Limited Edition Blu-ray from Second Sight Films. It is also available in a Standard Blu-ray format.
Dominik’s (Blonde, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) shocking and darkly entertaining film takes us into the violent world of Australia’s most infamous figure – Mark ‘Chopper’ Read – who conquered Victoria’s brutal underworld single-handedly, in a film based on his memoirs.
Bana shows his acting chops in this seminal, career defining role of bonafide villain Chopper, and he brings the outrageous true story to the screen with maximum force. The brutality and nonchalance of the life and crimes of the one-man mafia,...

Nick Cave and his longtime collaborator Warren Ellis have teamed up to score the forthcoming Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black.
Cave and Ellis composed “about 20-30 minutes” of music for the film’s score. Additionally, Cave has contributed a new song called “Song for Amy” that will appear on the soundtrack.
“Nick and Warren were the only musicians in my mind to score Back to Black,” said director Sam Taylor-Johnson in a statement. “Over the years I’ve listened to everything they’ve composed and longed to realize the dream of working together. Their sensibility as well as understanding of this story has led to a profoundly deep and moving film score.”
The soundtrack also includes six songs from Winehouse, as well a five songs from artists who inspired her, including Billie Holliday and The Shangri-Las. It will be released on May 17th.

For the past six years in a row, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor has gone to men with more than 35 minutes of screen time in their respective films. Although four of last year’s nominees could have bucked that trend, the academy chose to keep things consistent by honoring Ke Huy Quan’s especially lengthy performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” By appearing in a whopping 58 minutes and 33 seconds (or 42.03%) of the Best Picture winner, he more than comfortably surpassed his category’s screen time average and came within nine minutes of outpacing every previous supporting male victor.
Quan’s performance is the second longest in his film, as he and his Best Actress-winning on-screen wife, Michelle Yeoh, are separated by 36 minutes and 43 seconds (or 26.35%). Directly below him is Stephanie Hsu – who earned a supporting bid as his character’s daughter – at 42:18 (30.36%). Considering all 87 featured male turns that have merited Academy Awards,...

Sam Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” may have access to the late singer’s globally recognized back catalog, but another legendary musician is lending his talents to the project.
Nick Cave, alongside his long-time collaborator Warren Ellis, is scoring the StudioCanal and Focus Features film, which sees “Industry” star Marisa Abela play Winehouse. Abela is joined by a cast including Jack O’Connell (playing Blake Fielder-Civil), Eddie Marsan (Mitch Winehouse), Juliet Cowan (Janis Winehouse) and Lesley Manville.
Variety has been given an exclusive photo taken of Cave, Ellis and Taylor-Johnson recording in the studio earlier this week.
While Winehouse’s own songs, such as “Back to Black” (which featured in the recent trailer), “Valerie” and “Rehab” will undoubtedly take center stage in the film (with most recorded and performed by Abela), Cave and Ellis are understood to have composed about 20-30 minutes of music.

Shane Black’s latest thriller, Play Dirty, is getting a new producer.
Amazon, which is backing the feature, is in negotiations to tap Jules Daly to replace Joel Silver after the streaming giant parted ways with the veteran moviemaker over claims of verbal abuse.
Silver was steering Play Dirty, a feature seen as a comeback vehicle for both him and longtime collaborator Black, who is writing and directing for Amazon. Simultaneously, he also was producing the Doug Liman-directed remake of Road House, this one starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Road House had completed shooting and is deep in post-production, with expectations of hitting sometime next year. Play Dirty is expected to begin shooting next year.
Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment. An insider said Silver had completed work on Road House and was no longer involved in Play Dirty. Variety first reported the news of Silver’s departure.

This year’s awards-contending films offer a treasure trove of crafts that includes transformations, exquisite sets, lavish costumes, memorable scores and songs and immersive cinematography. The contenders range from newcomers to legends — Variety breaks down the categories below.
Makeup And Hair
Prosthetic makeup designer Kazu Hiro could very well walk away with his third Oscar for his work on Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” Transforming Cooper into the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein consisted of five different stages to gradually age the actor. And the guild as well as the Academy love a transformation.
Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” could be a contender in this area, following in the footsteps of the first two films that landed guild nominations. The sheer volume of prosthetics and wigs went into building the characters such as the humanimals, the hybrid of humanoid and animal, and the villain, the High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji.

Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard have both officially entered the Oscar race for their extraordinary performances in Michel Franco’s “Memory.” However, the awards campaign has announced that Sarsgaard’s riveting turn as a man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease will be submitted for supporting actor consideration at the major ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, SAG and Academy Awards. His Oscar-winning co-star Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) will vie for lead actress.
Written and directed by Franco, the film was recently acquired by Ketchup Entertainment for North American distribution and will receive an Oscar-qualifying run in December. It premiered at the 80th Venice Film Festival, where Sarsgaard received the Volpi Cup for best actor from the Jury, joining the ranks of past honorees such as Brad Pitt (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) and River Phoenix (“My Own Private Idaho”). At times when we see some films on the big screen we are mesmerized by their beauty. But others add in performances to complement this beauty. This is one of those films that is stuck in the middle of it. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford begins with some shots of the clouds moving at a brisk pace taking in with most of the shallow inequities of this dreamy town where Jesse James (Brad Pitt) resides. The whole starting sequence is more like a dream of the character who was an impending nightmare about to happen.
The first phase of the movie deals with the last crime Jesse commits with his gang and the consequences of what happens in this incident. His brother who begins to distance himself from him makes a big dent in Jesse James’ mind. This leaves him distraught and almost helpless. He...

It’s time for Peter Sarsgaard to finally shatter the Oscar glass.
Once upon a time, actor Peter Sarsgaard won the most precursors prizes during the 2003-2004 awards season for his supporting turn in Billy Ray’s “Shattered Glass.” In the film, he plays Charles Lane, a newly promoted editor who suspects one of his revered writers (played by Hayden Christensen) could have fabricated some of his stories. It was a breakout performance in the early days of online Oscar punditry that had everyone buzzing. However, when it came time for the major televised ceremonies, he was only able to muster a Golden Globe nod, then to be followed by shocking snubs from SAG, BAFTA and eventually the Academy Awards.

Christopher Nolan directed the epic biographical thriller film ‘Oppenheimer’ which is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s biography ‘American Prometheus’.
The plot focuses on the early studies of Oppenheimer and how he directed the Manhattan Project during WWII and his fall from grace owing to his security hearing in 1954.
When Has ‘Oppenheimer’ been Released?
Director Sam Mendes expressed interest in adapting Bird and Sherwin’s biography ‘American Prometheus’ following its publication in 2005.
But during the next fifteen years, the authors grew pessimistic about a film adaptation of their work which caused the project not to be materialized.
Finally, in September 2021, it was announced that Christopher Nolan would write and direct the biographical film with Cillian Murphy in negotiations as a lead cast member.
It is the sixth collaboration of Nolan and Murphy and the first one in which Murphy starred as a lead.

Plot: A deep dive into all the great movies that came out in 1982.
Review: Everyone has their own take on the greatest year ever for cinema. Scholars tend to cite 1939, as that’s the year Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Gunga Din, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and several other seminal classics came out. Modern film fans tend to cite 1999, thanks to The Matrix, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia and many more. I’d make a strong case for 2007 myself, with Into the Wild, The Assassination of Jesse James, Gone Baby Gone, Zodiac, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and others. But, if you’re a movie geek, one year stands above them all, and it’s 1982.
Think about it. E.T., The Thing, Star Trek II, Rocky III, Poltergeist, Blade Runner, the list goes on and on. And now, 1982 is getting a...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Roger Deakins wasn’t onboard with how “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” train sequence was turning out.
The Oscar-winning cinematographer reflected on the iconic scene from the 2007 film starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, namely calling out how “frustrated” he was over the “dinky” train used for historical purposes on set. The sequence in question involves Jesse James (Pitt) staging an elaborate robbery of a train during the first act of the Andrew Dominik film.
“I’ve got to say, Andrew and I got kind of frustrated because we couldn’t really find a train line that we liked and we couldn’t find a period train to the scale that Andrew wanted,” Deakins said during a panel discussion at the 92nd Street Y. “We ended up shooting in Edmonton [in Alberta, Canada] on a museum line and luckily it goes through this little wooded area, but the train was really dinky.

Ride episodes are filmed in and around Calgary, Alberta. The stunning landscapes around the provincial capital made filming there “so fun,” co-showrunner Rebecca Boss told the Calgary Herald.

In the 10 years since the filmmaker broke out with "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" (the 2013 romantic crime drama that /Film's review describes as "Cormac McCarthy by way of 'The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford'"), Lowery has gone from helming acclaimed high art indie dramas to earnest Disney films and dream-like fantasy epics. His latest offering, "Peter Pan and Wendy," marks yet another hard pivot for Lowery, bringing him back into the world of live-action Disney remakes -- sorry, re-imaginings, as the House of Mouse insists on calling them -- for a new take on J.M. Barrie's fairy tale that looks to bring something genuinely fresh to the oft-told story, which would be quite the accomplishment in and of itself.

Roger Deakins is as celebrated as cinematographers come. His work on everything from "No Country For Old Men," to "Blade Runner 2049" has elevated him to a status few others in his field attain. The man can seemingly do no wrong — unless you're Quentin Tarantino, who's railed against digital cameras while Deakins has fully embraced them.
But among Deakins' seemingly endless triumphs of cinematography, there's one that remains somewhat of an outlier. 2007's "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford'' is regarded by most who've seen it as one of the finest films of the 21st Century. Andrew Dominik's haunting, elegiac take on the Western sought to portray its titular character in a starkly unembellished way, so as to undermine the myth of him being a hero of the Old West. And Deakins' thoughtful and confident cinematography only helped to enhance the film's reflective tone.

Warner Bros. Discovery has been in and out of the news a lot lately. From its ruthless new attitude toward its films and shows to its perpetual (yet worrisome) money games, there's reason to be concerned — that is, if you're one to keep tabs on that sort of thing. Recent drama aside though, Warner's streaming platform, HBO Max, still boasts one of the strongest catalogs in the game. Even with the merciless culling and routine roster rotations, there's still a ton of good to discover each month.
March will signal another shake-up for the streaming library: HBO Max will be removing quite a few movies and shows this month. Fortunately, there's still plenty of time to check out some of the best projects before they're gone. Let's take a look at the best movies and shows leaving HBO Max in March.

The Western has been on life support for decades. One of the most popular and bankable genres in the silent film era, it experienced a decline in the 1930s, only to come back and dominate once again in 1939 with films such as the John Wayne-starring "Stagecoach" and James Stewart-led "Destry Rides Again." It would remain popular for several decades after that, producing more stars of the genre, including Clint Eastwood, before fizzling out once again by the 1970s. Since then we've seen Westerns pop up sporadically here and there, with some, including 1992's "Unforgiven," and 2010's "True Grit," enjoying significant success. Even in the last decade, we've seen some outstanding modern takes on the Western. But on the whole, the genre just isn't what it once was.

It may seem an unlikely path from the streets of Modesto, California to the Oscar red carpet, but Jeremy Renner has made it there with style. Renner, the star of 2009’s Best Picture winner “The Hurt Locker,” has already earned two Academy Award nominations himself in a career that has included a wide range of films, from thrillers to romances to his current stint wielding a fierce bow-and-arrow in the MCU as Hawkeye.

Renner first garnered critical attention for his performance in the title role of the indie biopic “Dahmer” (2002) which brought him an Independent Spirit Award nomination as Best Actor. He then moved on through a series of supporting roles, including a memorable turn as a bully in the 2007 “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” and seemed destined to have a career as a reliable young character actor.

This story about Roger Deakins first appeared in the Below-the-Line issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Roger Deakins remembers the moment he figured out what he was going to do for a living. It didn’t come as a child in Torquay, a seaside town on the coast of South West England, where he grew up surrounded by movies. “I think there were five or six cinemas within walking distance of where I lived,” he said. “And now there’s only two, which is a shame.”
It didn’t come in his teenage years, even though he gravitated toward film then, too. “I used to go to the cinema a lot, but what I remember most was when I was still at school and I joined a film club,” he said. “They just had a temporary screen and a 16mm projector, and they put up about 20 folding chairs. But they...

The characters of “The Banshees of Inisherin” live on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, where the harsh weather and separation from larger world conflicts intensify the connections and conflicts between the island’s inhabitants. According to cinematographer Ben Davis, the cast and crew experienced a similar sense of isolation, though with far happier results than the fate of the fallen-out friends played in the film by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The relative inaccessibility of the islands where they were shooting combined with Covid-19 restrictions created ideal conditions to yield some of the most beautiful and lyrical images of the cinematographer’s career.
The effects of Covid were felt — and had ironically positive effects — starting in pre-production, when Davis and writer-director Martin McDonagh were isolated together in quarantine. “We had to quarantine together on the Irish mainland for 10 days, because there was no Covid on the islands,...

“I spend a lot of time in director jail, then my friend Brad Pitt comes down and talks to the parole board and convinces them to let me out. Then I just go out and re-offend again, I’m incorrigible,” said director Andrew Dominik when speaking to an audience at the Red Sea Film Festival about why he doesn’t get the chance to direct as often as he would like.
The hour-long career conversation held in Jeddah focused mostly on the making and reception of Dominik’s latest, “Blonde,” adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ eponymous fiction book on Marilyn Monroe’s life, and starring Ana de Armas. “I was expecting critical success and that no one would see the film. That’s what I’m kind of used to, films having a positive critical reaction and people not seeing them. ‘Blonde’ was the opposite, at least in America. They hated the movie,...

Predicting which movies will set the box office alight seems like an easy task, but there’s a reason studios get paid the big bucks to do so.
However, every so often, an acclaimed film can come along that absolutely tanks after being unveiled for the public.
Over the years, there have been a startling number of films that have struggled, or indeed failed, to recoup their budget, and have consequently earned the “box office flop” label.
It’s hard to pin down exactly why movies such as these – Children of Men and It’s a Wonderful Life, to name a few – initially struggle to find an audience. Fortunatrely, though, the film’s quality shines through and it ultimately finds a fanbase beyond its theatrical release.
Thanks to the advent of streaming services, reliance on box office figures has diminished somewhat over the years. This also means that films which struggled...

The period-appropriate ‘80s pop hits assembled for Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” by veteran music supervisor Amanda Krieg Thomas provides a welcome contrast to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ eerie, otherworldly and ominous score.
Thomas, who has worked with Ryan Murphy and his production head Alexis Martin Woodall on “Pose,” “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” as well as his first two Netflix projects, “Ratched” and “The Politician,” credits the writers for several of the notable needle drops. Over the course of the 10-part series, you hear cheery Top 40 radio fodder of the time like Kc and the Sunshine Band’s “Please Don’t Go,” Chris Rea’s “Fool” to Patrick Crowley’s “Menergy,” Sade’s “Hang on to Your Love” and Noel’s “Silent Morning.” She was even tasked with acquiring Laotian pop songs for an episode.

Nick Cave confirmed his favorite movie of all time is none other than “Blonde.”
The Bad Seeds frontman and frequent Andrew Dominik collaborator recorded the soundtrack for the Marilyn Monroe reimagining alongside Warren Ellis. In a “The Red Hand Files” newsletter post, Cave answered a fan question as to what his “favorite movie of all-time” is, writing, “Dear Sourav, ‘Blonde.’ Love, Nick.”
The controversial Nc-17-rated Netflix film stars Ana de Armas as Monroe, along with Bobby Cannavale, Adrian Brody, and Julianne Nicholson. Writer-director Dominik previously said that the film captures the trauma of “what it’s like to go through the Hollywood meat-grinder.”
Dominik added that the film “has very little dialogue in it” and the emphasis is on the music and “an avalanche of images and events” harkening back to the iconography of Monroe.

"Christ, what an ugly dream." — Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, "Blonde"
Weeping, near sobbing, near hysterics, in the noir-like shadows of her dressing room, Norma Jeane sits in front of her brightly-lit mirror, desperate and coming completely undone. Her hands clasped in prayer, she begs, "Please come." Whitey, her personal makeup artist, continues to apply color and powder and blush and lipstick to the weeping, drowning woman, assuring her that yes, she's coming. She. The proverbial she.
They're talking about Marilyn Monroe, of course. And sure enough, in like a cursed wind, like the Angel of Death swooping down like the last plague sent by God, something comes into this small dressing room and grabs hold of Norma Jeane's body. And she's no longer Norma Jeane. The tears dry up, and a big, bright, terrifying smile like a death rictus spreads across her gorgeous face. She utters a small,...

What becomes a legend most? Well, in the case of Marilyn Monroe, it’s countless books, feature films, TV movies, limited series, documentaries and even a Broadway musical. “Blonde,” the latest film about the influential sex symbol, who starred in such films as 1953’s “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and 1959’s ‘Some Like it Hot” and tragically died at the age of 36 in 1962, has been polarizing critics and audiences since it premiered at the recent Venice Film Festival.
Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ best-selling 2000 novel, “Blonde” offers a fictionalized look at the troubled actress. Currently in theaters and streaming on Netflix, “Blonde” stars Ana de Armas. She has been singled out by critics for her work, but director Andrew Dominik (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) hasn’t been so lucky. “’Blonde’ has been conceived as a slow-motion death march,” said the L.A. Writer-director Andrew Dominik wrote his adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel “Blonde” in about four weeks — and then waited 12 years for the opportunity to bring it to the screen. “There were many times I swore off ‘Blonde,'” Dominik told IndieWire. “When it breaks your heart, you want to let go of the damn thing, but it just wouldn’t leave me alone.” That struggle resulted in Dominik’s boldest and most philosophically dense film to date, which is really saying something when you’re talking about the guy who directed “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” and “Killing Them Softly.” The lengthy gestation period might have been torture for Dominik, but the result is an epic study of trauma and Hollywood’s exploitation of it in which every image, sound, and performance is impeccably calibrated; the film has a purity and perfection that only come...

Director Andrew Dominik has a new film headed to select theaters, "Blonde," which will walk down the red carpet to Netflix a week from today to become the first Nc-17 streaming film ever released. "Blonde" has earned praise for its central Ana de Armas performance, but it's already proving as divisive as Dominik's last non-documentary film, "Killing Them Softly," starring Brad Pitt.
That movie came out ten years ago, while Dominik's filmography dates back even further to 2000 when he made his directorial debut with the Eric Bana-led "Chopper." There was a seven-year gap separating "Chopper" from Dominik's next effort, but his sophomore film was well worth the wait, and it happens to be commemorating its 15th anniversary today.

Casey Affleck is taking time to reflect.
The actor, who settled two lawsuits in 2010 accusing him of sexual harassment on the set of Joaquin Phoenix’s mockumentary film “I’m Still Here,” harnessed his “more personal failures” to transform into musician Donnie Emerson for musical biopic “Dreamin’ Wild.”
The film, which premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, is written and directed by Bill Pohlad (“Love & Mercy”) and tells the story of musical duo Donnie and Joe Emerson after their 1979 self-recorded album is re-discovered decades later. The film also stars Zooey Deschanel, Walton Goggins, Chris Messina, Noah Jupe, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Beau Bridges.

Brad Pitt has nothing but praise for Ana de Armas’ performance as Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s upcoming drama “Blonde.” The Oscar winner produced the movie through his Plan B production banner after starring in Dominik’s directorial efforts “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” and “Killing Them Softly.”
“She is phenomenal in it,” Pitt told Entertainment Tonight about de Armas’ turn as Monroe. “That’s a tough dress to fill. It was 10 years in the making. It wasn’t until we found Ana that we could get it across the finish line.”
De Armas’ casting as Marilyn Monroe has come under fire in the days since Netflix debuted an official trailer for “Blonde” at the end of July. The “Knives Out” and “Blade Runner 2049” actor is Cuban, which has left some viewers outraged over how she was cast as an American icon. De...

Andrew Dominik says he was surprised by the Nc-17 rating for his Marylin Monroe movie starring Ana de Armas, citing American sexual sensibilities, the #MeToo movement and men “worried about what the women think” as reasons “Blonde” couldn’t slip under the R-bar.
However, the more the Australian director talked with Vulture about the “Blonde” rating, the less surprised he seemed.
“I thought we’d colored inside the lines,” Dominik said at first. “But I think if you’ve got a bunch of men and women in a boardroom talking about sexual behavior, maybe the men are going to be worried about what the women think. It’s just a weird time. It’s not like depictions of happy sexuality. It’s depictions of situations that are ambiguous. And Americans are really strange when it comes to sexual behavior, don’t you think? I don’t know why. They make...

Capturing intimate live performances of their albums Ghosteen and Carnage, Andrew Dominik’s documentary gets to the heart of a remarkable creative partnership
There is something inherently cinematic about the work of Australian musicians and composers Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. The pair have collaborated on a string of scores for films, ranging from John Hillcoat’s 2005 antipodean western The Proposition (for which Cave also wrote the script) to the forthcoming Blonde, director Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’s historical fiction novel about “the inner life of Marilyn Monroe”. Yet even away from the movie theatre, Ellis and Cave’s compositions have a widescreen sweep, conjuring intimate aural landscapes of love and death – religion and fairytale intertwined. These are musical parables of grief and redemption, echoing Cave’s belief that “we all live our lives dangerously, in a state of jeopardy, at the edge of calamity”.
