Leading Barcelona production-distribution company Filmax has picked up the international rights to “Ama,” the directorial debut of Spain’s Julia de Paz Solvas. The mother-daughter drama bowed at Spain’s 24th Malaga Film Festival this week, where it plays in official competition. Filmax releases the feature theatrically in Spain on July 16.
Produced by La Dalia Films, “Ama” follows a mother, Pepa, and her six-year-old daughter, Leila, who find themselves homeless after they are kicked out from where they were living. Cast adrift, they struggle to find shelter but in the process, form a tight bond that was virtually non-existent before that.
“‘Ama’ looks at motherhood as a human relationship, references of which are, unfortunately, greatly lacking, and shines a light on those women who are facing this task alone, desperately trying not to fall short of the mythicized ideals of motherhood,” said de Paz Solvas.

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

Oscar-winning film producer behind One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Amadeus and The English Patient
The career of the film producer Saul Zaentz, who has died aged 92, was marked not only by his independence (his productions were often largely self-funded) but also by his dedication to each individual film. Unlike most producers, who have numerous projects on the go, Zaentz worked on just one at a time. This resulted in a relatively short CV but one with a high share of Oscars, including three best picture winners: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Amadeus (1984) and The English Patient (1996).
Zaentz was born in Passaic, New Jersey, the youngest of five children of Russian-Polish Jewish parents, Morris and Goldie. An avid reader and a fan of pop music, movies and sport, he ran away from home as a teenager to work at the St Louis Cardinals baseball team's training camp, then rode...

Portman has starred in films like "Léon: The Professional ", "V for Vendetta" and "Black Swan".

With big-budget film-makers comparing themselves to military generals in charge of thousands of people working on a single campaign, "Lincoln" director Steven Spielberg continues developing late director Stanley Kubrick's anti-war "Napoleon" project as a TV mini-series.
"I’ve been developing Stanley Kubrick’s screenplay," Spielberg said in a recent interview, "for a miniseries not for a motion picture — about the life of Napoleon. Kubrick wrote the script in 1961, a long time ago."
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the latter stages of the French Revolution and its associated wars in Europe. As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1815. His legal reform, the 'Napoleonic Code', has been a major influence on many civil law jurisdictions worldwide, but he is best remembered for his role in the wars led against France by a series of coalitions, the so-called 'Napoleonic Wars'.

Although the French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière has collaborated with Tati, Buñuel and Schlöndorff, he is the invisible man of film
To read the newly published This Is Not the End of the Book, a conversation between Umberto Eco and Jean-Claude Carrière, is to eavesdrop on two highly erudite minds. Digressive, anecdotal and humorous, they reflect on their love of the printed word and where the destiny of the book might lie, ranging from neglected French poetry of the 16th century to a forthcoming first edition of Waiting for Godot in the revived Nahuatl language of the Aztecs. But while Eco is internationally famous for his bestselling historical novels, Carrière has a relatively low profile even in his native France. Low, that is, for someone whose career as a dramatist has encompassed collaborations with an unparalleled array of directorial talent from film and theatre, and 50 books, in addition to the 80 screenplays,...

Describing his latest work, Pedro Almodovar said, "...(it) will be a terror film, without screams or scares. It's the harshest film I've ever written, and Banderas' character is brutal." Based on Thierry Jonquet's novel, Mygale (though some sources list a different novel, Tarantula, and both synopses seem to fit), The Skin I Live In reunites the director with frequent collaborator Antonio Banderas. Banderas plays Dr. Robert Ledgard, a plastic surgeon whose wife was horribly burned in a car crash. Obsessed with creating a new skin for her, the doctor is also carrying out some dark vendetta against the man who raped his daughter.
Here are a couple of production stills:
But it's this quick teaser that gives one a deliciously evil feeling about what's to come:
And it does exactly what it should do, it teases us into wanting more. Man, do I want more.

In Marvel's new Thor movie, Chris Hemsworth's hammer-swinging title character is banished from Asgard for his arrogance and recklessness.
When he is cast down to Earth, he lands squarely in the path of a scientist called Jane Foster, played by Oscar-winner Natalie Portman, who's watching the desert sky after a series of weird celestial disturbances (which turn out to be linked to goings-on in the gods' realm).
So how did the actress end up in such a cosmic comic book adventure after being part of the arty acclaim of Black Swan? Here, Marvel explain why they wanted her and Natalie talks about what enticed her to sign on, despite being burned out from her role in Black Swan.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige elaborates on how the character and the casting all began to fall into place: "We wanted Jane, the most famous early love interest of Thor, to...

It's been quite a while since we last heard from legendary director Milos Forman. His last effort was the not-so-well received "Goya's Ghosts" way back in 2006 but it looks like the man behind "One Flew Over's The Cuckoo's Next," "Loves Of A Blonde," and "Amadeus" isn't done yet and pushing eighty years old, he's still looking to make another run behind the camera, with an interesting take on the financial crisis dramas that seems to be pouring out of Hollywood. Variety reports that Forman is in talks to chronicle the original scumbag con artist, Charles Ponzi, whose name now…...

James shudders through Black Swan and wonders, just why does Natalie Portman have to endure horrible cruelty in seemingly every film she’s in?
"What happened to my sweet girl?" Well, Barbara Hershey, I'll tell you. They battered her. They beat her down. They put her through the wringer, wrangled her, ravaged her and drove her to ruin. They swept in on vicious dark wings and brutally hurt your sweet little girl for their own sadistic ends.
Oh, no more! Will someone please step in and save Natalie Portman from further suffering? Hasn't she been through enough in her career? It's high time that caring arms embraced the actress, wrapped her in a cosy cotton blanket and protected her from all the cruelty.
I like the Black Swan star and I don't mean 'like her' in a schoolboy crush or dirty-old-man-ogling-on-the-subway sort of way. She's an attractive and sophisticated person who,...

The St. Louis International Film Festival (referred to by St.Louisans as Sliff, because St. Louisans never met an acronym they didn't like) blew through town last week, and all Mal Shot First, atrejub, and I have to show for it are torn ticket stubs for Black Swan. I won't speak for them, but I, personally, didn't care much for the movie. I'm going to spend the rest of the review telling you why, so if you're looking for a review to tell you how Aronofsky continues to bat a thousand (mystats put him closer to, but not quite at, two-hundred), go to Rotten Tomatoes, sort by "Fresh," and knock yourself out. If you're looking for a review to assure you that Natalie Portman has finally turned in a decent post-Leon performance, go to Rotten Tomatoes, sort by "Fresh," and knock yourself out.

I was recently prompted to take a look back at my reviews of 2009, average out the grades and see how things shaped up. However, once I got done with that I began wondering how this year stacked up to earlier years and my first days reviewing films back in 2003. Of course, I dreaded the prospect. For those of you that are either new to the site or don't read all of my posts, you may not know how I feel about my early movie reviews back when I started RopeofSilicon.com. Perhaps you think I am awful right now, and if that's the case, I cringe at the thought of what you would think of my writing back then. As for this little experiment, I have listed the overall grade point average for my reviews on a per-year basis, the total number of reviews, the best and worst reviewed movies...

Samuel Goldwyn Films has picked up U.S. distribution rights to the drama "American Violet" which Tim Disney helms. Written by Bill Haney ("The Price of Sugar"), the film is based on true events and tells of a mother in Texas who's mistakenly swept up during a drug raid. Alfre Woodard and newcomer Nicole Beharie star. Also in the cast are Tim Blake Nelson, Michael O'Keefe and Charles S. Dutton. This is apparently due for release by Samuel Goldwyn Films in March next year. The studio has a strong reputation with some indie gems on offer, the most recent including "Trumbo," "2 Days in Paris," "Fugitive Pieces," "Goya's Ghosts" and the recent box office surprise "Fireproof" starring Kirk Cameron which is still enjoying the fruits of its labor.
