Season one saw how the murder of a young child sent shockwaves through a small community and how everyone became a suspect. Olivia Colman and David Tennant played the detectives who led

Broadchurch producer Kudos is heading back into the fire with its latest high-end drama development. The Endemol Shine Group-owned drama firm is developing a series based on Through the Fire, a female firefighter's memoir. It is the company's latest high-profile firefighter drama since it produced the 2014 Sky drama The Smoke, which starred Doctor Who's Jodie Whittaker. The book was written by Dr. Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, one of the UK's most senior female firefighters, and…...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Familiar in its overall storytelling arcs about risktaking and redemption, but also a sincere tribute to our new firefighting heroes for a warmer planet. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (though only after I’d seen the movie) (and I am indifferent about it)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
New heroes for a hotter, more fiery planet? Could be. Elite firefighter “hotshots” are the guys who helicopter or hike into wildfires and break them, saving not just a house or two but entire towns, and also wildlife and nature, too. (They literally call themselves hotshots, and it’s tough to snort at this macho boasting because they’re so genuinely badass but also so beneficial, with no downsides. Their important work does not require, say, hurting or killing other people,...

This past weekend Replay Events, one of the UK’s premier gaming and event entertainment companies and the driving force behind Play Expo Blackpool And Manchester (both events that team Nerdly have attended in the past), added another Northern event to their roster: Play Expo Leeds, an all-day gaming celebration taking place which took place at Leeds United Football Club’s Centenary Pavillion on Sunday April 16th.
Of course the Play Expo events are all about playing games – be it pinball, arcade games or consoles, be they retro or modern. But one of the big draws, at least for us here at Nerdly, is the Indie Game section, which allows independent developers to show off their games – be they finished or prototype; receive feedback for attendees; and see just how well the games they’ve devoted their time to are received… And you’re guaranteed to find a hidden indie...

A warm welcome to Geeks Vs Loneliness, the area of the site where we try and natter about things that may be affecting you, or people around you. We're realistic: we have no miracle cures for anything here, but hopefully, there's a tip or two we can pass on that may help. That, or just a virtual hug from us to you.
This week, we're handing over to the brilliant Jane Roberts. Without further ado...

I remember when I first realised something was wrong. I found myself asleep on the desk, face cushioned by my history textbook.

A special five day marathon of guitar shredding tunes has been announced today, as Guitar Hero Live‘s Shred-a-Thon event goes live on Ghtv. The brand new event is bringing some of the toughest songs in Guitar Hero history back to the stage for players to attempt to remaster over the next few days.
The Shred-a-Thon playlist is set to include the following tracks on repeat:
DragonForce – Through the Fire and Flames
Alter Bridge – Cry of Achilles
Megadeth – Hangar 18
Lamb of God – Ghost Walking
Trivium – Strife
Once the event is over, Through the Fire and Flames will be joining the game’s regular track-list so the return of the iconic tune will be a far more longstanding one than previously expected. Every song in the Shred-a-Thon is also Rival Challenge-enabled, which means players have the option of competing against matchmade gamers in a head-to-head battle during each song.

To be a fan of Buffy is to argue with other fans of Buffy. We tend to agree on exactly one thing- that Buffy The Vampire Slayer is an excellent show and should be required viewing for all adolescents (and adults, let’s be honest). Beyond that? It’s a constant battle between good and evil and by good I mean “people who found Riley dull” and by evil I mean “anyone repping Kennedy”. Debates rage about the scariest monsters of the week (definitely The Gentlemen), the best song from Once More With Feeling (it’s “Walk Through The Fire” but the case for “I’ll Never Tell” is persuasive) and whether or not the spin-off Angel is worth watching at all (it is but we deserve an apology for Connor).
But the greatest battle of all is over the seemingly innocuous question – “Which is the best season?...

It was an emotional night on American Idol as Malaya Watson, the 16-year-old Michigan native firecracker, was the latest finalist voted out of the competition. Watson chose to sing a Chaka Kahn song for the ’80s night performances, but unlike her song choice “Through the Fire”, Malaya didn’t make it through the next round. Watson was joined in the bottom two by C.J. Harris, her duet partner the night before. EW sat down with an emotional Watson after her elimination.
Entertainment Weekly: How are you feeling?
Malaya Watson: I’m doing okay.

American Idol returned on Thursday to narrow it down to seven finalists following Wednesday’s 80s-themed night.
American Idol Recap
Making his weekly predictions, judge-turned-mentor Randy Jackson said he believed that Dexter Roberts, Jess Meuse and Caleb Johnson had all secured spots to remain in the competition for their performances. He also had some words of praise for the poor pitch-plagued C.J. Harris.
Jackson gave Sam Woolf, who was saved by the judges last week and performed an acoustic version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” a 50/50 chance of sticking around. He was less positive in his reviews of Malaya Watson and Alex Preston, who sang Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire” and The Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” respectively. Though he wasn’t entirely keen on Jena Irene’s “I Love Rock N Roll,” he thought she’d get enough votes to be okay.

American Idol's Top 8 sang songs from the golden age of Madonna under the tutelage of season 7 winner David Cook Wednesday.
But who recaptured the '80s era of legwarmers, headbands and big hair the best (not counting Keith Urban, who opened the show sporting a clip-on mullet that had Ryan Seacrest calling him "Billy Ray Urban")?
Here are the singers who had "The Eye of the Tiger" and those who were more "Borderline."

American Idol’s top eight returned again this week after judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban used the season’s one and only save on Sam Woolf. This week, the finalists were required to pick a song from the 80s.
Jena Irene made a bold choice in reimagining Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock N Roll.” Irene started off the classic song sitting down at the piano, allowing the song to build up as she belted out the second half. The judges reactions were mixed, with Connick critiquing the arrangement and Lopez praising the young singer for another original performance.
Country boy Dexter Roberts chose to sing Georgia Satellites’ “Keep Your Hands to Yourself.” Mentor David Cook was on Roberts to enunciate better – and not to let the other guitarist on the stage steal the spotlight from him. Overall, the judges felt like Roberts' performance was passable,...

Look, we all know that The Judges' Save is a crapshoot. Yes, it got us more quirky musicality from Casey Abrams and it allowed Jessica Sanchez to make it to the Finals, but how much gratitude should we show an innovation that also prolonged the "Idol" lives of Matt Giraud and Michael Lynche? I guess we should feel lucky that Sam Woolf has survived to participate in a theme that I'm sure is near-and-dear to his heart: '80s Night. Sam isn't the only "Idol" Finalist with a sketchy connection to the '80s. Actually, the total number of remaining contestants who drew breath in the '80s is a resounding "zero." So... This is gonna be fun! 8:00 p.m. Et. We begin with a reminder of last week's "drama," which strongly suggests that if Sam had gone home, this would be '70s Week. This week featured David Cook as a mentor.

Chaka Chaka Chaka Khan. How best to describe the vivacious vocal powerhouse? If Aretha is the Queen Of Soul, Chaka is the Queen’s ribald younger sister, who’s off banging the Royal Man-At-Arms.
Chaka has won ten Grammy awards, sold more than 200 million records worldwide and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She’s been an ally for decades, performing at countless Pride and Equality events, and has often referred to her gay audience as her most loyal.

Fade in. Against a black background, the name of the series is spelled out in lights: Smash.
Ok, hold on, before we begin can I just say one thing? Despite every lazy critic in the country writing that Smash is “Glee for adults” Smash is not Glee for adults. Glee is Glee for adults and there's no reason to insult adult Glee fans by saying otherwise. That said, comparisons of the two series are probably inevitable. Just, try to be nice about it, Ok?

We truly feel for Chaka Khan who is in hot water with a New Jersey landlord for an alleged failure to pay rent.
Maryse Selit tells the National Enquirer that Khan and her sister/manager Tammy MCCrary agreed to rent a mansion in the town of Watchung for two weeks in June, but says the pair left after only one week and didn't pay the agreed upon rent.
"Chaka and her entourage stayed only one week, but I'm stuck for two," says Selit. "I told them I had someone who was willing to pay rent for the entire two weeks. I know I can sue them, but I was trying to settle this the easiest way possible. Now they're acting like I don't exist."
We're guessing that won't last for long now that she's taken her story public. But, as of this writing, camp Khan has yet to make a statement.

Browsing the interwebs today, as a proper gaming nerd is wont to do, I came across an interesting article over at Dorkly.com. The article is titled ‘The 15 Most Annoying Levels in Video Game History’, and it touches on a good variety of classic levels that are frustrating beyond belief. I’d recommend giving it a quick browse before I move on.
Browsing through the list, it became quite evident that I had a different opinion of each and every one of these levels. In fact, each level I’d played on this list (about 12/15) I recall as the most memorable and enjoyable portions of the games they’re from. Most of them I spent time actively searching out, just so I might experience them again. Are they inherently annoying? Certainly, due their difficulty they can be construed that way. So then why do I feel like these levels are so damn important?...

It's been compared to Adam Lambert's wail and the sound of a woman giving birth. Siobhan Magnus' signature shriek-of-a-high-note concluded many of her "American Idol" performances this season — some good (its wicked debut on Aretha Franklin's "Think"), some not so good (she got burned on "Through The Fire").
But Siobhan's jaw-dropping octave-jumping sound (which she taught herself while singing Kelly Clarkson songs in the shower) is but one in a long line of pop music power notes. So when she stopped by MTV News for her "I Just Got Kicked Off 'Idol' Now I Get To Talk To 9,000 Media Outlets" press tour, I wanted to hear her thoughts on some of my favorite high-pitched musical squawks.

Alicia Keys bursts onto the American Idol scene tonight to help the remaining season 9 contestants navigate a bizarre list of 77 "inspirational songs." (Check out my dream set list for tonight's show here.) Before Aaron Kelly can go all "This Is My Now" on our behinds, though, I'm going to rank him and his six rivals in terms of their momentum over the last eight weeks of live performances. Won't you do the same by voting for your favorite in our Power List poll? (Related: 'American Idol' results night recap: Two Blue; for more Idol coverage, follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak.

Adam Lambert returns to American Idol tonight as this week's guest mentor, and while some folks have said it's an affront to Carrie, Kelly, Cookie, and Kris to let the season 8 runner-up offer singing and performing tips to the show's current crop of contenders, I'm in the opposite corner, totally stoked to see how it all plays out. Let's be honest: Throughout season 8, Adam proved totally adept at molding Idol's weekly themes to fit his particular vocal style, and his general lack of conversational filter should make for good TV -- and perhaps jolt the remaining hopefuls to create their own Idol moments.

The Lennon-McCartney songbook is back (to where it once belonged) tonight on American Idol. Hopefully it'll be a little more Carly Smithson "Blackbird" than Kristy Lee Cook "Eight Days a Week." But no matter what hijinks or horror await us tonight, I'm forging ahead and updating the current season 9 rankings. Won't you do the same by voting for your favorite contestant in our Power List poll? It's time for our weekly "American Idol" recap, and our girl Crystal Bowersox (hereafter referred to as "MamaSox") threw us a curve -- in stilettos, no less!
momlogic's Vivian: Last night's "American Idol" was all about Soul/R&B, a genre that fits many of this year's Top 10, but proved too much of a challenge for a handful of them. And mentor Usher was more than willing to put forth his two cents for the greater good. "I will be brutally honest and may hurt your feelings," he said. "But it's because I want you to be great."
In spite of this ominous warning, Usher wasn't particularly harsh with any of the "Idol" wannabes. Instead, the evening's Maleficent was Ryan Seacrest, who took every available opportunity to humiliate a number of the contestants with his pressing on-the-spot questions and hijinks.
Opener and MamaSox-competitor Siobhan Magnus boldly ventured into sacred Chaka Khan...

Usher seemed to be a big fan of Siobhan Magnus on this week’s American Idol installment. During her Vt we heard him singing her praises saying:
“What separates Siobhan from the rest of the pack is that she has a very unique vocal ability……..I think she’s got a true shot at being an incredible artist.”
We like Siobhan and have been behind her for weeks now but on Chaka Khan’s Through The Fire her vocals were her weakest yet and we are sooooo over that big screaming thing she does in every song. Not her best effort, sad to say, because we do really like her style and individuality.
Judges Comments:
Randy Jackson: Big song. You definitely got a big voice. I don’t know if it definitely caught on pitch wise. It was a little all over the place for me. I don’t...

It was another week with no save on "American Idol." Didi Benami's ride to potential stardom screeched to a halt Wednesday night (March 31) when even a strong reprise of her signature Fleetwood Mac cover wasn't enough to keep her in the game. The action-packed hour featured performances from Usher, season-two "Idol" champ Ruben Studdard and Diddy-Dirty Money, as well as a visit from Justin Bieber, but all eyes were on the top 10, as nearly half the finalists were potential bottom-three fodder after an uneven night of R&B performances on Tuesday.
It's on to the next one, though, for Lee Dewyze, Casey James, Aaron Kelly and Siobhan Magnus, who survived after her wobbly take on Chaka Khan's...

Lee DeWyze really stepped up last week on American Idol, breaking the inconsistency that has long plagued him and establishing himself as a guy who may last a long while.
Tuesday night, he followed up that performance and then some.
DeWyze turned the Cornelius Brothers' "Treat Her Like a Lady" into a contemporary rock tune that people loved. As for the weekly favorite, Crystal Bowersox, she traded in her familiar guitar for a piano on "Midnight Train to Georgia," faring pretty well.
Andrew Garcia did an acoustic rendition of Chris Brown's "Forever," while Michael Lynche was typically solid performing India.Arie's "Ready for Love" and Siobhan Magnus was a bit of a disappointment channeling Chaka Khan after a pair of strong weeks.
Lee DeWyze brings it again on American Idol.
The rest of the Top 10 performances weren't exactly up to par, but we've come to expect that by this stage.

As Aunt Whittlz and Adam "The Beav" Vary previously revealed, I'm the Idol on-the-scene newbie. This was the first time I've ever stepped inside the Idoldome, which is not so much a dome as a futuristic black box, and let me tell you, I had a blast. As I walked up the stairs to my seat, I couldn't help but feel a slight tingle on the back on my neck as I caught a glance of the neon American Idol logo. Oh, this place really does exist! The thing is, on television, Idol takes on an almost mythic quality --...

Moments before the Top 10 took to the "Idol" stage to sing soul and R&B songs, an "Idol" blogger colleague messaged me on Twitter freaking out. "Gahhh! Jim, season nine needs to start getting serious. It's getting out of hand. Maybe tonight will be the night."
My reply?
"Well, it certainly can't get any worse."
On that note, let's get to the performances!
Siobhan Magnus
Song: "Through the Fire" by Chaka Khan
Verdict: Through the Ringer
Ever wondered what it would sound like if Marlee Matlin sang in a wind tunnel? You're in luck, because Siobhan Magnus' take on Chaka Khan's classic provided just that! Boys and girls, step right up and see the incredible shrieking shrinking woman! Marvel at how quickly the Queen of Quirk can become as boring and atonal as previous seasons' ear-terrorists Jasmine Trias, Ramiele Malubay and Carmen Rasmusen!
What went wrong here? Well,...

The latest instalment of American Idol saw season nine's Top 10 mentored by Usher in preparation for their performance on R&B and soul night. Here's what the judges had to say: Siobhan Magnus - 'Through The Fire' by Chaka Khan Randy: Says she definitely has a big voice but the song didn't really catch on pitch wise. Doesn't think it was a "shining moment" but loves her courageousness and conviction to take on the song. Ellen: Agrees and says she looked at the judges when she felt herself getting lost. Says she loves her but it wasn't her best performance. Kara: Suggests that she got nervous and some parts just didn't work. Thinks she's delivered every week and every performer has one off-week. Simon: Says it sounded like she was running the marathon while singing, branding it her weakest performance.

All together now: "Yeah, yeah yeah. Yeah yeah. Yeah." Or something like that. 'Twas the night Usher came to American Idol to school a bunch of Jason Mraz-lovin', Lilith Fair-attending singers how to get down with the get down. And whaddaya know? [Warning: Spoilers ahead, west coast viewers!] As a whole, the to-date-disappointing cats of season 9 proved cooler than expected -- and started competing as if to say "Hold up! Let's not give the season 9 crown to Crystal Bowersox just yet!" Lee Dewyze still looked a little bit like he was going to experience a case of the voms, but his vocal was authoritative,...

Tuesday (March 30) night is Soul and R&B Night for the "American Idol" Top 10. After the unavoidable mockery that accompanied last week's guest mentor, a certain Ms. Miley Cyrus, I can't say anything bad about Tuesday's mentor. There have been so many documentaries about basketball in recent years—The Year Of The Yao (about Yao Ming), The Heart Of The Game (about a high-school girls basketball coach), Through The Fire (about Sebastian Telfair), and Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot (about a street basketball tournament), to name a few—that it takes something special for one to rise above the standards of, say, an Espn doc. Kristopher Belman’s More Than A Game seems to be in a position to manage that: An Akron native, Belman caught onto the LeBron James phenomenon early enough to have his camera ...

After watching the third episode of the HBO series True Blood, I've come to the conclusion that Ryan Kwanten's body deserves special consideration at next year's Emmy awards, and that Alan Ball has presented us with one of the most vampire-batcrap insane hours ever seen on TV.
We start off where we left last week, with Sookie paying a visit to her bloodsucking paramour,??Bill, only to be confronted at his door by the Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living, And Became Effed Up Vampires.
